In this informal farm vlog, the narrator walks through a day of homestead planning and hands‑on work with the family. They begin by spreading compost and setting up fence corners using plastic posts, metal stakes, and hay‑string, preparing a secure area for six chickens (three existing hens plus three new ones to be added). The discussion covers ordering additional chicks, installing a deep‑mulch garden with three to four rows, and using chickens to break down wood chips and later till cover crops. They outline a future electric poultry net system, noting a dead battery that needs replacement, and describe moving livestock (cows Violet and Stun Muffin) safely. Throughout, the narrator coordinates the kids—Jonah, Josiah, Zariah, Lily, and Gideon—in tasks like staking, planting, and fence building, while mentioning contributions from friends (Amy, Arun, Art, Bree, Rebecca). The overall tone is practical, enthusiastic, and instructional, emphasizing the integration of chickens, garden preparation, and family teamwork for the 2018 homestead plan.

You guys spread those out. This is a gift from, uh, Amy and Arun. Fitness on! Spread it out, feed the soil. Thanks for all the food scraps, Arun. Oh, you're welcome. Even though we didn't get our chickens, our adult chickens, I still got big chicken plans. Of course, Art and Bree are bringing some on Wednesday, add to these guys. How you guys doing? The fat hens, they're liking that they have this fence. Don't tell them, don't tell them, it's not even on. All right, we gotta establish some corners here. 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 5. Let's go get the corner posts. I already got corner posts. And you already got hay string? Yep. Bring it here. Put this in right here at an angle. Okay, let's get rid of the insulator. It looks ugly. Hand me that. See how good that looks, Jonah? That corner is pulled taut just with a diagonal metal stake and tied together. For this area, we're getting 3 more chickens. We're gonna have 3 fat hens plus Art and Breeze, so we're gonna have 6 here. This is where our corner is over here, Jonah. We're gonna go to our spot. Listen, listen, but we need a plastic corner because we can't have this hard corner. Josiah, let's, uh, let's pull this corner out. Okay, this pole will not stay in the ground because look, come, come down here and just sign, point at that. Look, the soil is just so good. It's just too good. Watch this. Back up, back up out of— back up a little bit, Josiah. Watch this. I could drive this metal post bare-handed. All right, we got to get some supplies. Can you come with me to get some posts, guys? 3 here. You want to know how to do this? You want to do part of this? We're gonna order some more mulch. This is gonna be deep mulch. It's gonna be a better looking garden. It's gonna be in our front yard, 3 rows, maybe 4, for gardens. The chickens are already going to begin preparing that by breaking down this food, by breaking down the wood chips. There's one coming in the mail. Oh, what are the little gardeners up to? How's Zariah, Lily, and Gideon? What are you doing, Gideon? Making a garden. Oh, okay, looking good. You see that gap there, Josiah? You need to stake that down. Do you know where any of our plastic tent stakes are? When the time comes, we'll use this electric poultry net to do runs down where we're going to have our gardens, uh, and give chickens access to it and then take away that access in a strategic way, keeping our chickens down here on wood chips, deep bedding coop, maybe a solar-powered water heater. And scraps from the garden could be easily put over here, and chickens can be easily let into used garden areas. It's going to be so good. Now to get a corner where we don't have one I'm putting up a plastic post. Stretch it tight. Now that plastic post isn't going to hold up itself. Actually, it is, but, uh, if it stops doing that, we'll come pull a— maybe we should do that just for good measure. Put a metal— what do you think, Josiah? Should we just see what happens? I think we just see what happens. Okay. Yeah. Okay, we got one last corner, Josiah, and then you can go play. Okay, let's see if it's gonna work. Boom! Right here is the crop garden. I call it a crop garden, or I use a crop garden as something you plant something, probably not as many of the varieties in one garden bed, maybe 4, 5, 6, 7, and then you plant it and you walk away and you don't come back to harvest. Chickens ideally come in, till this up, prep it for you. But it doesn't look like we're gonna get enough adult chickens to do this, so we're gonna, we're gonna do this ourselves. It'll be a good workout, um, broadforking it, prepping it ourselves, sow it with COVID crops, cover crops that will even grow now. And then by the time our chicks that Rebecca's gonna order today hopefully get here and are grown up and old enough to till, it'll be time to plant. About the time of when we do the 100 Days of Growing Food, we'll use the chickens to till in the COVID crop and then plant behind them. All right, Jonah's been bothering me, begging me to smoothify this. You ready to smoothify it? Hang the— hang a gate here. It's, uh, running low on battery. I'm gonna go get our battery. This was on the docket for smoothifying the farm— brand new batteries for this thing. This battery is dead. We got it new, but it's dead. I don't have to wait till another day. Let's go move the cows. Where to put our next side fence? I think we'll go just to the left of that. That's kind of a swampy area. Oh, look who's ready! 3, 4. Must have grabbed a cross fence spool because that's not long enough to be a side fence. I got enough now, plus my handy-dandy homemade handles on here. One cross fence coming right up. Okay, let's open up the old side fence. After I set up the fence, I went to pet Violet, and I was so glad she just let me walk right up to her. And then I went to move her. I thought I would pull her, but then he— Stun Muffin— got close. And I don't think it was aggression. I just want to be real careful, so I kind of maneuvered her to keep her in between him and I. When I got close enough, all I had to do was let her go, and she knew exactly what to do. She went right into the pasture. Gotta hurry up and turn the fence back on. Glad to be done with that. It's all safe and sound. Two of the fat hens are out. My plan worked. Shh, the chittlers are under the, uh, the low tunnel. They're gonna see my shadow if I go that way. I'm the only one who can stand. Crazy kids. Oh my word. How many Legos do you have? 1 billion. It feels like that right now. Did you order our chickens yet? I'm working on it right now. This minute? Yeah, well, I called earlier and left a message and they didn't get back to me, so I'm gonna recall. Okay.
