the Most Important Thing

Victor Justin Rhodes and his family document a day on their homestead, from milking cows and feeding lambs to fixing fences and building infrastructure. They discuss their "most important thing" philosophy: prioritizing work that moves them toward self-sufficiency and away from grocery stores. The day ends with cooking smoked ham and celebrating a cow's upcoming birth.

They ate too much ice cream, cotton candy, and lollipops. Oh my gosh. Our friend Ashley brought a homemade cotton candy maker. They made some cotton candy with maple syrup. I don't know if it were those foods. Definitely could have compromised her immune system, I'm afraid, was somebody was sick at pony club on Friday. Gideon! Let's go! Leave that, that's Henry's. Hey, where'd you get that sucker? Uh, the house. I don't think you're supposed to have suckers. Give her a scoop. Okay, I'm trying to deal with these lambs right now. Getting— get out there and get her a scoop. Oh, there's no scoop in it. Jonah, where's your scoop? It's hard to do this. All right, give me your— give me your bucket. That was good to milk a little again. I haven't milked in a while. Why don't you go get a Okay, they're so poopy, I'm not even feeding them back to the chickens. Ready? They need to be eating their own poop. Don't worry, the cows won't eat them. Uh, they're herbivores. But that will decompose into that bedding and it will be compost. Can I drive by myself with you beside me? Sure. Happy day! Welcome to another day in the life. Of a bunch of foodies growing what we eat and eating what we grow. Look at those clean ones. Go get the clean egg basket. Today, as always, we're trying to figure out the most important thing, and once we have the most important thing, well, then that's what we do. Reminds me of that clip from the film Gardening in a War Zone. The day started just terribly with those explosions, and as a result, I arrived only by the evening. I'm starting doing the most important things which can be done today. You don't want to miss that film, guys. It's for free. It's inside the Abundance Plus Film Festival, March 22nd through 24th. Don't miss it. Link in the description. Dirtier ones, since we have so many, can be fed back. Now all the chickens are getting out. I shut it. What happened? Thank you. What about the ones— did you herd them back in? You know, I may have plans to be clearing so we have more pasture for milk and beef. I may want to build a mineral feeder for our milk and beef. Going this way apparently, so back up and come right here. I'm trying not to ask her to do too much, but I bet you can drive. Yeah, just angle it right there. Boy, they don't miss a beat. They value freedom more than they want to eat. Doesn't that sound like us all? For the sake of our health, we're opting out of the grocery store very soon this summer. Chickens and their eggs are definitely an important part of us being able to quit the grocery store, so it's important that we keep them in. All right, boss. Tell me what to do. I'm here to— I'm here to work for you. Shouldn't we bring this around? No. There are more important things to life than just eating, like you saw with the chickens. Freedom. I mean, that's really why we want to grow our own food and be healthy. Toss me around. What do you need? I need you to do the water, and then I need you to connect that to the electric fence. Okay, like the relationship and the development of our children. It's first and foremost. Is there an extra hose here? Yeah. Could I use one of those hoses to hook up an automatic water to your water? I don't need one. I only refill like every few days. Just go over here, go out there and rinse it. Okay. I want to be the boss. I don't want to get her an automatic waterer, but I'm gonna let her be the boss. She wants me to, uh, Get this fence working real good. Blaze has been getting out. This post is against this metal, so it's grounding out. I fixed it. Plastic post, mount the end of that, secure the plastic post to the solid. Hey, Papa, you took my lollipop! You took it? Why would you take a lollipop from a baby? It was on the ground and I washed it. That's like taking candy from a baby, bro. Who's done this to me? Who's taken candy from a baby? All right, Jonah, turn this on. Oh wait, we didn't leave— Jonah, we had to leave this here. Why don't we have to leave this here, Lily? They're not exposed to this opening. No. Okay, Blaze has been a bad boy. Yay! How soon does Blaze try to get out? Oh really? So it'll be a minute. This fence has not been on. Let's see what happens. Let's see what happens, Jonah. He's got to learn. All right, all right. Wow, watch out! Is this normal, Lily? Yeah, yeah. Okay, so he pressed it and was getting shocked, right? There we go, there we go. Okay, all right, he got shocked. He's trained, he's trained. Oh my gosh, he's about to have a heart attack. He's trained. Look, he is scared death of this fence now. I don't think he's gonna touch it. Look, look, he don't even want to get— not even getting 4 feet from it now. Never seen an animal so alarmed. Now we get the most important thing done. Lily is minister to, loved, and boss over me, which means when you do that for your children, let them be in charge and boss you around, it means you're putting their trust in them, and it means they feel they feel trustworthy. Randolph! Hey, hey! We the only ones working today? I'm hoping them boys will show up here in a minute. Yeah, I'm gonna go. Did they say? They're supposed to come back today. Okay, all right. Also very important, that's what it's all about, smoked ham. Look what we've done. More milk, more beef, more lamb for the Rhodes family right here. We're getting close to being all done with sawing. Yeah, these machines make it faster. This cluster, there's some clusters in there, cluster there. I don't know if we're gonna get it today, but we can sure try. Gotta keep him busy a while. There's a lot of rust in there. We got a lot done, but it wasn't near enough. Still got a lot more. What took us 100 days, a whole winter last winter, to clear acreage, it's like a quarter of the time now with these machines. I'm glad I'm wearing a helmet because that just came and hit me in the head. I thought he was just piling on the pile, so I didn't get out of the way. Guys, wear your helmet and your chaps. Cut once. Somebody— I don't think that one's me, but maybe one of the boys. Chainsawing is not the time to be cool. I feel I'm gonna get out of here before I test my luck too much. You like that digger, Jonah? You need to dig. Dig these— put these gravels out, huh? You want Jonah to get on his digger and move this gravel about, or are you having fun in it? I have fun in it. Oh, he's loading his dump truck. Nice. Smells good. 250, perfect. Smoking a ham all day long. Hey, how you doing? A little bit better. A little better. All right, here's you some yogurt. Just went outside and sat in the sun. Okay, I also had a lot of sauerkraut. All right, how was the grocery store? Expensive. But I'm just gonna put that nail in the coffin, huh? Like $600. We're at the end because now it's always more sparse right before the spring. Yeah, there's studious guys. That was their idea. Our ham is already though, 160. You do this with a Boston butt. Do you do it with a ham? We're gonna try a paper. I'm getting it off just before it's getting burned. Should capture the fat. Really, we're gonna turn this all the way down. Wow, seat time, Minnie! And he's helping on the garden, keeping us accountable. We got a lot going with the build, don't we? Well, there's like 15 overdue tasks. I'm gonna muster the Annie positive energy. You don't seem too worried about it. So proud of you, Lily. Actually came down here to get some shots of Harriet for another vlog, and look, Vanilla's having a baby. You little rascal. I think we'll go see if anybody wants to see this. I wish I would have filmed telling them because they both jumped up. Hey, you guys want to see a cow be born? Yes! Vanilla's having her baby. I need to go! Was she laying down? Didn't it look like it was about to come out? She does have her tail up. All right, well, maybe it's not going to be soon. It's going to be soon. I don't know if it's going to be soon soon. Just did a podcast interview with the Curtis Stone. What is way better value for people is to buy a homestead property that doesn't have your dream home, but it's orientated in the right way. It's, it's, it sits in the right place. You got a nice, uh, you know, 3-car garage, uh, you know, a detached garage shop. Kind of thing. You got a barn for animals and feed, you got a tool shed, stuff like that. Upgrade the house. You don't want to miss that. Off-grid— how to find the off-grid property. Oh boy, hope it's still warm. We know how to find the perfect homestead property, not necessarily off-grid, although it can be that. It's about the 11 scales of permanence. Pure gold. You're gonna get such an idea of what to look for. Many of you are looking for a homestead. Don't do it without listening to this podcast first. Knock knock! Oh, they all jumped up. They all jumped up. I'm gonna shred this with my new mixer. Okay, that cheap Walmart hand mixer, you think? Oh boy, I hope it's that tender. Hey, Billy. What? What? It's working! Cheap little Walmart mixer. Rebecca, You even made buns? Are we really having barbecue sandwiches? Hey, you don't want it in a sandwich? Well, try a barbecue sandwich, my man. I said ham, Mom said barbecue. I'm the only one talking. They're so good. Happy day, y'all.
