The one day Chicken coop build (for meat chickens)

Victor and his team rebuild a mobile meat chicken coop in one day, disassembling it piece by piece, marking parts with a Sharpie, and tweaking the design with a new 2x4 cross brace and adjusted wheel size. They also troubleshoot an Everflow waterer, experimenting with siphon flow and pipe angles to prevent freezing.

I did the ashes for you this morning.
Thank you.
Hopefully I'm going to start doing the ashes as a warm-up before my run.
Good idea.
I got two birds with one stone. Instead of walking as a warm-up, do the chores as a warm-up, and then I can run the whole time. Now shoot, here, let's do this.
What is that?
Well, Josiah's got a sick bird he's ministering to, remember? Well, she's not sick, she got injured because he broke the two rules of predator protection. You know what those two rules are, Jonah?
Forgot to turn on the fence and did not shut up the chickens. Don't worry, I know those were all wrong.
So we had a possum get into the chickens. Thankfully they squawked and carried on, and we ran out there and caught the possum before he did any real damage. But Josiah's claiming one is limping, so he wanted to baby it a little bit. And we're making a video on how to care for a sick chicken and how to predator-proof your operation. Those are bonuses inside Permaculture Chickens. This promotion on Permaculture Chickens is going away Sunday night, 10 PM. If you want those two bonuses— predators, illness, all kinds of other bonuses, the first to get our meat shaw, etc.— get in on that. It's over Sunday at 10 PM. Smell it, make sure it's fermenting. Hey honey, you don't seem to be limping to me. You seem good. There you go, there's you a little bit a fermented feed. How about that? These peppers got killed by that frost.
I got frostbite.
Put them into the chickens before they're nothing.
Our morning project is an outdoor— an indoor project.
Let's get inside and work on this meat shaw. This is a good design. I'm not changing anything about it, actually. We just kind of— the handle bar needed to be secured. I am adding— I'm adding a bolt to that, so I guess I am changing a little bit.
So do everything else.
Yeah, maybe as I start taking it apart, you can go get the wrenches.
But I want to help take it apart.
You go get those wrenches and anything else you think we need, and I'll tidy this up so we can get your trailer out of the way. All right, that's out of the way. We're ready to do this. Wait, this looks like the right size. Oh, it's too big. We have two of the exact same size. Look at this. This is shameful. There are 3 drill— 4 drill bits in here.
Oh, I'm the lucky one.
Did you just find it?
Gold?
No, that's gold. Did you find it?
Yeah, I found one.
That's fine, do it. Now we're going to pull this roof off, but I want to keep it in this order. Now get your drill bit.
Can we turn on the light?
Start taking apart. Now hold on, this is kind of crazy. I know, I forgot about this. I forgot about these cross pieces, but that's to have something to screw into. This is a little more complicated than I had hoped. What we do, Jonah, because we need to know where all these measurements are, I think we should get a Sharpie and mark before we take these off. If we get a Sharpie and mark where this is we can write in the directions that you put it— whatever this is, this looks like 3 feet in or something. All right, I'll go get the Sharpie, measuring tape. Good job, you have the handle off. We have a hair of a problem. When we used grounding rods for our axles, it went all the way across easy. But now that we're using our 2-foot, this is much better. And the longer on 2-foot, and there was a— there would be something like this but down lower to hold the roof, but that's not going to help us hold our axle. For our axle has to be out here. See that? How's that going to get held up? So instead of that little one here, I'm gonna do a full-size 2x4 cross. So I need 2 of them. I need to make that measurement and go cut those. You keep taking this apart.
It's gonna be all taken apart by the time you get back.
Okay, put it to the side. Neat. This is going better, and I think because we already have holes in it and now we have marks, it's gonna be pretty easy to put it back together. This is a really simple design. This is really easy for somebody to get started with meat chickens. I'm just telling myself that this is worth the effort. This is worth the hard work so that others can do this. Ah, diggity! I have some 2x4s.
Cedar.
Hey, did you get done disassembling it over there?
Sure.
Yeah, I did. Okay, I got the axle supports. What? You did it! That wasn't too bad, huh? Well, Jonah, it's time for breakfast. Okay, we'll get some work done. Okay, inside, and then hopefully come back out for afternoon, put this together, huh?
Yeah.
Everflow waterer. We, meaning me and Trent, have got 10 minutes to lunch. And two brains are better than one on this overflow waterer. So we're gonna hook it up and I'm gonna try— we're gonna keep it out here from the animals. We're gonna try to get a siphon going on the low line, fill it up. I guess we're just gonna try one more time.
Yeah.
Now, hey, you know what we should try is if it's steeper. Look. Let's do something drastic. My original idea was that this would fill up, it'd be filled up with water. So let's try that a little— a more drastic fall, huh?
Yeah, that may create a better flow on that one.
This is constantly filled with water, so that we got full flow, right? That's overflowing right now because this isn't even on. Now when we turn this on, it'll pull the water that's already in the line. We should have a siphon Okay, obviously, look, did it slow it down a little bit? So let's see. Let's shut it real quick. Let it go. Let's see how slow it's going.
Yeah, you don't have anything going there.
Yeah, it's going so slow. It's draining. Barely.
See?
Yeah, so I don't know, it's just—
you said you got to shut off. It's just in the creek.
Actually, it is stopped, isn't it?
This is the line that you were messing with.
Wait, we haven't opened that yet.
Yeah, you got to open that.
We gotta have it open that.
Yeah.
Okay, so what we need to do is have this going.
Yeah, just have that going.
Yeah.
That's got to stay open so that it starts drawing.
Okay, it is moving though.
It's moving a little better, isn't it? Yes. So let's see if it—
oh wow, wow, wow!
What? Look how fast we're getting that current.
You got something there.
We're getting fast, dude. That's not going to freeze.
I'm going I'm not even sure the water in this side is going to freeze. Wow, that's got some potential. Should we get our drills, chip this down, try it tonight?
We can see how the animals—
well, you know what, let's do this, let's do this. Let's not give it to the animals yet. Let's just try it like this tonight. All right, it's supposed to freeze, right?
Yeah, that'll be nice.
It's not gonna work.
Yeah, exactly.
Man, I'm excited! This is almost full speed, and to make it full speed. This could just have been longer. The reason I didn't is because I wanted to begin in there and clean out the filter. But with the water this vicious, say a leaf falls in there, this water is moving around so much it's not going to get hung on the filter. Look, it's just going to get moved around in this, which can be cleaned out just like that. But if it doesn't work, we can raise the sides up a little bit, maybe half an inch, you know, kind of direct more, more of an angle there.
We can make this longer.
This could have started like right here, and then you could reach in and clear it out. All right, time will tell. Go ahead, Trent, put it back together.
You ready?
I'm gonna go get some tea. All right, we've got it taken apart.
I know how to put it back together. I was probably the one that destroyed it.
We got to put it together piece by piece. You could put— hey, you could start right now by putting together the bottom square. We did it! Oh, I'm at 9:00, 4 o'clock.
Yes!
Now for the hard part, getting the pictures together, writing out the plans, writing out the measurements, and getting it to the Permaculture Chickens customers. All right, you're gonna try it. We've raised it up with bigger wheels so a goose can get under there. We pretty much built a mobile roof. Last call on that, doing a sale with Permaculture A Culture Chickens right now until Sunday at 10 PM. If you order— oh, oh, if you ordered from A Culture Chickens, you'll be the first to get this meat shelf plans along with an extra chapter on how to raise meat chickens. Oh, you want to lean it up? Okay, yep, let's go.
They're only touching. Whoa, whoa, whoa, down a little, down. You gotta lean it down big time right here.
You want to move the top of the bed?
And the store is nice. Barely taking up any room. Okay, we can move the sheep shelter back. I'm gonna call it a vlog. Normally we don't vlog on the weekends. Tomorrow we will because it's the talking teddy bear's birthday. Josiah. It's a very special day. We'd love to document that. So see you guys then.
