The Only Thing that Works

Victor and Rebecca walk through their farm morning routine during what they call burnout season, moving sheep and cows through rotational grazing, dealing with pink mold in yogurt, fixing fence failures, and making bone broth in an Instant Pot. They ship products like chicken and asparagus internationally through Homestead Builds.

Do you want me to walk or do you want me to carry you? I see. He's up early. I'm negotiating for him to be quiet and for us to go do chores. Do you want to ride the Ergo or walk?
I want the back.
The back. Yeah, we're going to go down to the suburban and get a bag. And everybody gets up and does chores in the morning. Let's go, boys. It's time. I'll be honest, we're all in like a season of burnout. Kids have been doing this their whole life. Rebecca and I, 19 years, something like that. Happy day, sleepies! Feel good? Leapfrogging today in our rotational grazing. The sheep are there. We skipped this, we already grazed this a few weeks ago, and we go there. Happy day, Winnie! Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep! They're gonna go right towards the truck. Whoops. Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep. No problem. Sheep. Go anywhere with some alfalfa. There's a lot less of them. We got a dozen with nacho. We must have lost somebody because we're supposed to have 12 ewes because we want 12 lambs a year for our freezer. We got nine this year. Close six last year. We're getting better. Today's milk. Jeez. Two and a half gallons. Do you guys ever go Phases where kids haven't nailed the yogurt and it's over a month old. It's all right. I mean, it's great. I mean, it's more fermented than ever, but just tastes a little weird. And this is weird— pink mold. Yogurt does go bad bad, but we go through these phases where the kids eat a lot of yogurt, so we make a lot of yogurt, and then it stops, and then yogurt goes bad. This is what we use for starter. Yogurts in the dark. Oh, it might have been weird too, the way we had to do those last time. We had no power and we just let them sit out for 48 hours. He actually might be grading. He's gotten some rocks off. I say some rocks. Tons and tons of rocks. It's a huge pile. And there's not just one, there's two. 3, 4. Hey, I don't, I don't wear Crocs. Is this your Croc, Austin? Let's see. Nope, my Crocs are here. I think that's soil right there, mostly. Cows paddock for today. Gonna go set up the next paddock. These fence guards don't work. The only thing we found to work is actually put nets around these trees. Cows just go over it. Works when the trees were little and the cows couldn't reach over it, but now they're over it and there's the trees are still too young to take that abuse. We got to mow around the trees and mow for the path. This tree has been invaded. We're contemplating taking this structure down, but I'm afraid for deer. I mean, we don't have a lot of deer here. I've seen more bear than deer, and we have Winnie, but I feel like the moment we take these down The deer will start coming, getting them. There's briars. Yeah, yeah, no. Oh good, you gave me a choice. All right, we'll get those if we can get to it. These are fruit trees planted— what was it, this time last year? Get in. A little longer than that. Might get fruit next year if we can keep them alive and unchoked. This isn't the best thing because it's just gonna grow back, but at least we'll stop them from getting choked out. Much better. Now we have to offshoot to protect that tree. Our paddock will keep going this way. Hope this little net is enough to get all the way around and back up to here. You guys bounce on top of the Premiere One post. I've never done that before. Wow, you can look at that. Well, it's been one of those mornings. I'm maybe 2 lengths away from closing it out to do a whole nother net to finish it out. It's going to take all morning to have just done the chores. I believe we're done. Food, water, shelter. They haven't had minerals in a while. We need to get their mineral sleds out here. Just maybe we'll get back to getting some minerals out here if we can get some of our other stuff done. Check on the boys. How do you say you're a homesteader without saying you're—
so the other one that was here was just so gross. I've got sticky I put a sticky trap on that door. Oh, the other one was full.
All right.
I put one— oh no, I didn't put it on that door. I put it in the sunroom. I put a new one over there. Gotta kill these flies. If you want to get me some bones, some beef bones out.
That'll help clear room in the freezer.
Here you go. I'm working on—
I got some knuckle bones in here. That's a good variety. You got some marrow.
Yeah.
You got some knuckles.
If you find another bag that has completely different types of bones in it, get that out too, and we will defrost it as well. I'll roast them all and then I'll just freeze the roasted bones back.
Instant Pot times 2. I want to be a beef broth snob, meaning that's all I do. Big animals is said to be even healthier for you, beef broth versus chicken. This is gonna help me in my snobbery.
I'm sure it will.
