The Snow Storm that Never Was

In this informal family vlog, the host and several family members walk through a typical farm day that was supposed to include a snowstorm. They start by making a banana‑ice‑cream‑style treat, then shift to testing milk for mastitis and producing a batch of yogurt. The conversation moves to repairing a broken latch on a track loader, planning how to remove a concrete ledge using a jackhammer, and designing a winter chicken‑coop hoop that will also serve as a summer trellis. A detailed barbecue rub recipe is shared, along with a discussion of needed tools (pins, spray paint, Allen keys, grinder blades) and a supply run to a hardware store. Throughout, the host promotes the “Abundance Plus” membership, offering a Joel Salatin book incentive. The tone is conversational, instructional, and occasionally humorous, reflecting the family’s collaborative approach to farm work, food preparation, and small‑scale entrepreneurship.
Chapters
Get in, take all these bananas and put them on a tray to freeze, okay? What are you two doing? We're gonna make a movie and we're doing bananas. What are you two doing?
We're, um, doing this.
Bruh. Hey, why so much ice?
Because we're making ice cream. Okay. In a movie.
Okay, do you feel that almost full of ice? Yeah. Okay. We prepared for the snow. Is it gonna come? Hey, are we going? It's yours. Are we going? Yeah, I'm going to sleep. No, it's time. Gideon, come get this ice.
It's Gideon's ice, not mine.
Yeah, I would wait on Gideon, okay? Yeah.
I put this under one because I can't take it out.
Okay, it's hard to leave this cozy room this morning. Is it going to snow?
Um, I hope. I need my snow dance again.
Your snow dance wasn't strong enough.
It was snowing, but it stopped. I wanted the snow So bad.
Super hard to get up and motivated this morning. I thought we were going to have some content and some snow this morning. So now what do we do? Uh, cuz I think it's too cold to do a project outside. I don't know what y'all are making. So how much milk do I put in this?
Ice.
Is this how much ice you put in it? That's a lot of ice.
Yeah, so put a half.
No, not a lot of maple syrup. That tiny drop. All it was is banana, ice, and— not even banana. It was ice, uh, milk, and maple syrup. Oh, that's it. Okay, all right. Forgive me for complicating things too much. Ice, maple syrup, and milk. Bustin' butt tonight, y'all. Let's do a thing of yogurt today, okay? Hey, there's talk about drying honey off because she's only giving a quart, but that's a quart. How much is vanilla giving, Josiah? A gallon, but we're not able to make butter. We're kind of just— I guess we probably drink a gallon a day. It's only half a gallon left in there. Let's make a gallon of yogurt today, and then the quart that she gives us we can put towards milk. Okay, is she giving a quart?
Yeah, but it's just like goo.
Goo?
I mean, it's milk, but it's just—
you're milking out the one quarter, right? Uh-huh. Well, then let's test this.
It's just all kind of old milk. It's just like she's done. And not really putting effort into me.
Let's test it. You got a towel? Hey, is it starting to snow? All right, wipe out the mastitis test. A little above freezing, so even if it snows, it's not gonna come out. CMT test, California mastitis.
I can already tell which one it is.
Well, that back right one has always been boogered.
Wait, this is the bad one?
Yes, that's why it's clogging. Oh, you've been milking that one?
I've been milking that one.
Always milk this one to the You've been harvesting.
We can at least do it now.
You've been putting good milk on the ground. Yeah, yeah. See how that's snotty? I'm not absorbing it. Okay, it's the one closest to you in the back.
Yeah.
Oh no, jeez, how long has that been? No wonder the filters have been clogging. Most of my work prepping was not in vain. Oh, this makes me extremely happy. Just cleaning out the lines and now we're not blowing fuse. We just cleaned up the Drop cord. Question is, did the pigs' heaters trip the circuit? When are we going to cut off the overhanging concrete? You want to try that today? Get us the jackhammer. We have an outlet right here. What? Sure.
Well, why don't we build the rocks up all the way to the concrete edge? Okay, and then we have the time and money and we can get a nice saw or jackhammer, we cut it out, and then fill it in because it would be good to—
it would fall now. It would, it would be good to let it have some weight on it falling as we try to get it off because then you could get in there and cut, cut the rebar out. This is warm compared to what it's been lately. We might actually be able to get some work done. We've been filling in, bringing material from down creek. They're talking about this ledge. I say we try it. At first we were thinking we're gonna have to get a concrete saw, and we may still to cut off this ledge. And if that's the case, then we've got to wait till all the animals get out in the spring and we get all the hay out because we don't want any concrete dust on that. But we don't have a concrete saw. We do have a jackhammer. I'm curious to see if that might do it. It probably won't cut it clean though, will it? All this we could shove material under. It's here that we need to chip it off because we're going to re-concrete. If we're going to re-concrete that, we could just shove material under here. What? Maybe, maybe your idea is not that bad.
Maybe we could just shove material under here, put the rocks to here, and then when you have the time, yeah, you go through and cut out what you need. Yeah, and then re-concrete the whole thing.
Yeah, that's not a bad idea. Pit stop to get the little ones. Okay, I'm gonna show you guys how to make yogurt. How much milk do we got? It's filtering better, Jonah.
Yeah, I know.
Leave a little room. Take your ladle, you grab our yogurt starter. So make yogurt out of these two. And the rest can go to milk. Let's get it on. Breakfast is gonna be on soon. Can you guys help me so I can get in time for breakfast? I'll just put it in the, uh, put it in the dehydrator. Not to dehydrate it, but just to warm it. 100 degrees, 24 hours. Let's go do our chores before it gets snowy. Easily distracted. And bro, let's go. I would like to eat breakfast with y'all. I was a little weak this morning in my kettlebell, so I'm about to eat a little more Nurturing today. I rested a little bit before chores, feeling like I should eat something and not intermittent fast today. This coat is overkill. All we need is a bucket of, uh, chicken feed. I don't care if it didn't snow, our feed room is nice. Our feed shed, wood stacked up. We need the wood whether it snows or not. The pole barn looks great. We need the hay no matter what. Look, Henry, snow! You northerners want something to laugh at? I mean, even I'm laughing a little bit. They canceled school today. Did we bring hay material over here? We got to get hay material. How are they doing? Did their water hang tight last night? Oh yeah, water is unfrozen. It actually feels even a little warm. We may have not gotten crazy snow, but I'm really proud of how everything looks. Well, I mean, that doesn't look that great, but I guess I'm proud of how set up we are. I like how this looks. Hey, it's snowing! You gotta summon it. What's the stick? I'm missing it. Look, watch Mama's dance. Works better with a camera, honey. Oh yeah, oh yeah, it's gonna stick now. Have you even ever seen snow?
Yeah, he has.
He's just smiling at us. Good looking breakfast you've made there, honey. I'm trying. You're killing the protein, girl. You're doing it. Doing it. And you're going to train after? Yeah. How do you eat and then train?
Uh, I wait a little bit. Okay. I have things that I can do around the house.
J&L Farms recipe for barbecue. So easy. Tablespoon cumin, tablespoon salt. I'm gonna use Redmond. That's a hack. Redmond's smoked salt. It's a smoked flavor without having to do that. It's basically a— I love it because it's a tablespoon of everything. Tablespoon of garlic powder. Well, I'm not going to do a tablespoon of pepper, it's too hot. I'm gonna do half. Chili powder, paprika, onion powder. Kids screaming in the background, that's normal cooking. I put a little olive oil in here and then I have a paste. 225 all day long, low and slow. Well, we're broke down-ish. Little latch that holds the track loader down has broken. We're fixing things ourselves. Just gonna look that part up and order it ourselves. Josiah's been hauling material that washed down from the hurricane and bringing it back up. I like a little focus today because Well, I thought it was going to be a snow day. I thought it was going to be cold. So I'm going to see if we can't, you know, peck away at this chicken coop. I'm going to need a ladder. Hey, you got a ladder I can borrow? There's 3 in here. How long of one do you want? All right, all right. Can y'all see it? How come you can't see— you can't see that in the camera. There you go. Kind of like to get this winter hoop up before— well, before the winter's over. Oh, just so I can weld. Okay, the rebar bows over. We only have a little bit, and that could be our foundation. We could screw this in if I have somebody help me hold the pole when we screw that in. I don't know if that's enough of a foundation. I think I'd feel better if I welded an extension on, and it could go down— it could go down through here, and we're securing it all down through this line. It's going to be a winter hoop, protect them from snow, give them a little heat, uh, and a summer trellis. What would Big Daddy do? Big Daddy would add some links to these poles. Josiah! Josiah! Josiah! Josiah, do you know how to weld? Yeah, can you, can you help me weld? Sure, I'm pretty sure we used the last of our grinder blades. We don't have any grinder blades. You thought when I was asking for a welder, you thought I was talking about fixing this. I doubt it. We'll just have to order that part. That can probably just easily be removed right there. It's in the spring, right? No. Okay, gotta replace this. If you want to work on that, I'll take these guys to get a grinder.
Yeah, we already have a grinder.
Do we have a grinding blade? No. Can you give me an old blade? This is it. This is what we need. Yeah, take the spring off and then the two bolts off. We're gonna have to remove it to replace it. Hey, where's your coat? You sure? Okay, here's— whose is this?
Gideon's.
Gideon, is the car seat in there? Oh, I didn't check. Okay, here's what we're gonna do. We're gonna go every day at this thing. It don't matter what the weather says. It don't matter. We're in that time where it warms up at least to 30 during the day. Okay, let's get this chicken poop done or die trying. You, you need a coat. Yeah, we're just gonna go real quick. You want to hold this? We're gonna get a new one of these. Is this important? Should we just order this and do something else with our time?
We, we gotta get pens. Pens.
And do you guys need an Allen key set? Yeah, we could get one. Okay. I think there is something to be said about let's just, let's go at this thing every chance we get. Morning project, that's what's most important right now. Let's do it. Just to be clear, you have a birthday this weekend, okay? We're gonna get you a nice gift for your birthday. Big box of socks and underwear.
Giant box.
Giant.
Me?
Yeah, you even have, the box is so big you'll have fun playing in it after. That much socks and underwear. Here's our list: pins, spray paint, Allen keys, and grinder wheel. And maybe bring it in so we get it long enough. It's that one you need to take, right? That's— it goes inside that, right? Yeah, that should— that slides inside. Okay, grab that. We'll make sure we get a long enough pin. It's not a normal pin. There you go. How's that? How's that, cowboy? No, we're not here to strap toys. You're having a big birthday this weekend. We gotta spray our property line while it's still winter. We also need to prune our trees and plant a few trees while it's winter. We're kind of running out of time. Is anybody with me? You think, oh, you put off a project to winter. Oh, we'll do it this winter. And then all winter you're like, oh, we'll do it later. And then Before you know it, winter's over. Well, purple is the official don't hunt on this property without permission, and then the white is the official— see, that's probably it, right? Does it have to be inverted gloss purple? Look at this Crescent Ranch, look how big that is. Okay, what are we looking for? Get the cheapest one there is. Does he just need something like this?
I don't know, it'll probably work.
All right, the whole reason we came. You sure you only need 3?
How many do you think we should get?
I mean, does that last you a while? Oh, 3 is fine. Okay, we got everything we need.
I did, I already did that one.
See, they can have fun at Lowe's even if we don't buy toys. Look at the snow, Henry. Is it gonna snow? We're not altering our day based on a weather prediction. Spray paint for marking the property. I'll take the receipt. And do you want to put those in your pocket? Okay, let's go. You would? You would have a lot. You get off the cold. Whatever you said, it's gonna get cold. Leftover Honduran coming our way. New Year's registration for Abundance Plus. I know some people are having some hesitation. Always is, you know. It's a, it's an investment. It's an investment in yourself. Is it worth it? That's the common thing. Is it worth it? Well, we're throwing in a Joel Salatin book, $30 towards a Joel Salatin book if you order by Friday. And get in there. I know you're signing up for annual subscriptions, but get in there, try it out. And if for some reason Hey, this ain't working within 30 days, let us know. We always work it out with— we will work it out with you, okay? We want everybody to be happy. So as we approach Friday, we got today's vlog and one more vlog. I'll mention it one more time tomorrow. Tomorrow's going to be the last call, so be thinking about that. Talk with your spouse about it and consider joining the family at Abundance Plus. We're here to offer further inspiration, education, and a safe place to to commune with other like-minded people and get access to me. One day closer to that hoop— coop. Wow, what'd you make us?
This is a latte. It has mushrooms and protein and an egg yolk, maple syrup, and raw milk.
Wow. What are you gonna do with all that froth?
I'm gonna drink it, I guess.
Did you make a heart shape? Are you that person?
No.
I've been going down sort of memory lane writing today. I wasn't able to get up this morning to write, so I wrote this afternoon for my chicken book. Had a lot of fun talking about overcoming obstacles for tending chickens. Mom's up to something yummy. Coleslaw for our barbecue tonight. Homemade mayo.
More likes in your video.
Yeah, I gotta get you in there, get more likes. Get little Lily in there, more likes. More likes for Josiah. What about the barn? Oh, they're, they're really gonna like like this in a second when we show what Jonah did to this track loader. I take a sauna hotter than that. 225 for 6 hours. I don't sauna for 6 hours. Oh, it's gonna be fine. It's not falling off the bone. Can I increase the temperature and maybe get a little more tender? I'll do 300 for 30 minutes and then let it rest. All right, Jonah, let's go see this. As I break this book. I am going to be putting video courses inside Abundance Plus, so that's an extra benefit for Abundance Plus members.
You still getting up at 5 today?
I did not. I just felt really tired. I made up for it this afternoon. Tomorrow I'm back on track. Are you serious? Wait, are you serious?
I just wanted a tip back.
Wow. Will it hold? Yeah. Wow, and you sanded it and everything. Yeah, dude, forget even buying a part. I know, you just welded and sanded our tent.
The only thing that drives me crazy is there's no paint anymore.
Good job, bud. Good job. Proud of you. Not only do we fix things, we make things.
Wow.
Yeah, that's from it bouncing up and down so much.
It wore that whole thing out. That's made to be replaced too.
Eventually those will both have to be replaced.
That's smart of them for doing that. I make it replaceable. All right, let's get it shut. How's that make you feel, man?
It feels good.
I love how you're using my book Rooted Life for the recipe. When you go make a video about this— when you're gonna make a bit— you can do a video about any of these recipes, by the way, if you're ever looking for an idea, because they're all yours except for bacon and eggs. How'd it turn out? Good. How'd it turn out, babe? I think it's— You don't mix it, huh? No, I mix it. Jonah don't mix it. Josiah mixes it. No, I don't. Big Daddy don't mix it. Lily don't mix it. Josiah, you and I are the only ones? Everybody doing okay?
Yeah.
No. All right, we're on a mission. Cold or no, weather threatening or not, chicken coop tomorrow. Let's do it.
