Come on, help me get the sheep in. Let me be free. The sheep are gone. I promise you, they mowed this like a string trimmer. I don't think we have to go after them now. I don't think I gave them enough, so that might be why they did mow it so well and they got out. Good news is they did a really excellent job mowing. Bad news is They got out. Let's set up their new net and then go get them. They don't go very far. Hey bud, good to see you up and at 'em. Are you really that cold? Been a little dramatic. We're above the ground today, you know that? We're above the ground. One day I'm gonna be up there in those woods, 6 feet under, you know that? Huh? But it's not right now, you know that? We're here today. The luckiest man alive. I'll be honest, I'm very tempted just to not show you guys this. We got plenty of content today. We got guests coming over. We got to slow down, find farmstead here. Um, I, I'm tempted not to show this, but just the other day in the beef butchering workshop, one of the guests said, my wife and I really appreciate you putting all the content out there, especially when things go wrong. Oh, that's okay if that's what inspires you. I could keep that up. There's always something going wrong. And, uh, he just said it's good. He said, because then I don't feel so bad. And that's true. If I were just to come out here and just show you the sheep up onto that new grass— I could, I could go show you the sheep on the new grass that we're gonna mow today in the fence, and then show you what they did yesterday, and not even talking about that, and not even talk about them getting out. And then I would make myself look like a champ and it would make you look like a chump because you're saying, what the heck's wrong? Why can't I get this right? You just win some and you lose some, and some are rained out. Is it worth it to mow with sheep like this? No, it's not. It's not. Even if it went well, the time to move their fence, I could have just string-trummed that bank. Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, come on, go! There you go, let them have a taste. Come on. Yeah, put a little down on the, the tarp where they can see it. There you go, that's good. And then you have problems like this. You most definitely could have just string trim this. All right, keep calling them. Oh, they don't want to go over that tarp. They don't want to go over the tarp. Lift the tarp up, bud. Shoot, you poured out. Okay, tarp over the compost. Not a good idea, by the way. It's fraying. Talk about microplastics. That's the wrong kind of plastic to be using. You got to get UV-treated plastic. I like that pigweed. Pigs like it. Oh gosh, I hope they like it. What do you think, comments? Do they like it? Are they gonna eat it? Look, they're starting to eat it. I love it. They did just have an all-you-can-eat ice cream buffet. Who knows how long they were out. I don't think it was too long though, actually. Happy day 28 of Grow 30, where we've pretty much figured out— well, it was a boost into our— what? It's not— why? Why can't I pull it? I can't pull it anymore, bro. Hey, good morning! Just getting it done. Breakfast. Heck yeah, Dutch babies! The kids are sick of the sausage and egg combo we've had all this 28 days. It was a little boost for the rest of our— to start the rest of our life. Just being more conscious of what we already have. If we want it, try to grow it. Either we, we work together and grow it together and save money, or I put more time in the office. Which one do you think I want to do? Pick your heart, pick your heart. Special guest today, some of the realest people I know. These are people that we look up to in homesteading. Gideon, can you turn me on? Oh, thanks. It's kinked or something, bro. The knob or something. Is that like that? If it was, we have a problem. Look, this hose goes— oh, this is not working still. What's wrong? Oh, our blue tank's on it. Yep, that's pinching it. Pull the hose out, all the way out. There you go. It's not even the right hose. Oh, oh, that's not the— oh, it's not connected. Shoot, this is probably the garden hose. Okay, what it is is there's multiple hoses here. I'm taking this over. Wait, wait, wait, we need to plug that in right here. Well, that's a short one, get it out of the way. There's something wrong. You kinked it. See, see where the kink is? What's that? That needs to get out of the way. That's confusing. Ah, dude, what is the deal? Is the shutoff broke? No, it's on. It's still not working. Okay, okay. Yep, there it is. Try it. Let me go see. Better work. I don't know what we're gonna do. I brought it there. It should be running. Are you kidding? It's not running, Gideon. Oh wait, it's not on it. Wait, who turned it off at the house? Okay, I swear that was on. That was on. Is it working now? Oh my gosh, I was almost an hour. Definitely not worth it comparing to a machine, but the sheep need something to eat, uh, don't they? And Gideon and I need something to do together. Gideon, I couldn't find one, so just watch it while you fill that up. We need a female quick connect so that we can connect that and just get it filling and then being— be able to just walk away. And then it auto shut off. Milk's here. How much you get? 1, 2, 3. 3 gallons? Yeah. Is that because we put the calf up so late? Yeah. Did you and Jonah get along? I guess. What was the trick? What was the trick? Huh? What was the trick, buddy? Did you work on the nets together? Yep. Okay. Separate cream. Oh, cream separating is much harder. Beauty's got a meeting with Heather, our lovely assistant. Good design. This is the other thing, Heather, like, I don't know if I'm helping her at all. Hold on, my dad's calling me. Okay. You're on speaker. Hey Heather, don't lose your Christianity. Help Rebecca also, she's right here. I'm here, I'm here. Hi Rebecca. Hey Mark, how are you? Good. You try to put a small tint in your wood and— Herney bought clear. I mean, you can't stain and then clear, or do you not? Is that not how you do it? I guess, I guess. I don't know, I don't know. Yeah, I thought you stain and then put a poly. I can grow tomatoes. Uh, cabin's in good hands. Hey kids, I've got to do the milk. Does somebody want to learn how to do the butter? I got to do the butter. Just so you could find us a tarp, you guys could harvest a bag of potatoes so then we can cover it up and get some potatoes out of the way. Help me make a decision. We've got to get this covered. We got to cover it, okay? We could do silage tarp, but the question is, we harvest— we harvested enough to get us by, right? We have a group coming September 7th-ish. We could wait and harvest the potatoes then, or start now. And we start now, we'll start bringing compost over and build these beds before we cover it. Cover it so the weeds die, or we cover it. Yeah, and the weeds can die more. And we had the sheep in here too. That manure can dissipate a little better. This got so overrun with weeds, I said let's put the sheep in it for one day. And so there is a little bit of manure here and there, but we don't necessarily want to get that on our potatoes. So, okay, let's— did we get enough to get us by till September 7th? Yeah. You sure? I think that'll do you, or you'll be— was that one whole row? Yeah. Hey boys, which one of you wants to go get the Mini-X and start flipping that— flip the chicken— the compost? I'll do that. We got to do it every other day until September 7th. Bill, you want to help Troy? Sure. We got Troy and Tara all the way from Canada. They pull weeds. We've got— oh, we've got that much in time to try to find a silage tarp to cover this. You can't use all those people to find a silage tarp. That's a one person's job. Uh, please have a 100-foot silage tarp. Please have a 100-foot silage tarp. Ah, yes! Okay, this is where I should have used Troy, my shoulder, like that. All right, let's do it. I can do it. Wondering if the tomatoes are— sweet potatoes are done. Did you know if Jonah tested the sweet potatoes? What? I don't think he did. Okay. All right, we got the tarp ready. Let's get get the old bug netting system up. Wires. And Troy, y'all grow sweet potatoes in Canada? Oh wow. How long is your growing season? You know, we plant after the May long weekend. Yeah. And then it goes to— it's longer now than it was years ago, but we can go to about October. Okay, okay. Why'd our generator just start? Is it a non-demand generator? Yeah, it is. Yeah, it starts up automatically when we lose power. You don't think those— hey, truck, I better go look at this. We have a temporary electric cable. This get pulled? I don't think so. Keep this pile going. 25-30 degrees warmer than ambient temp, so that means it's still breaking down pretty good. I need your help. Okay, pretty good. I didn't know you could do that. Yeah, party trick. You didn't know you could juggle? Maybe I do, I don't remember. How long y'all been married? Uh, 28 years. And he whipped out the juggling. Oh, now we're gonna get to the bottom of it. Long form podcast. Okay, you, you ready for your mind to be blown? Let's go. Gets blown in different ways every time, doesn't it? Let's go. Yeah, all the time. Man behind the curtain is set up nice. We're just reviewing. Told Rebecca I can't interrupt people. That's right, that's our tendencies. I can't interrupt people. You can't finish sentences. It's hard. It's hard. And we know these people, they're our friends, there's a rapport. We want to ask the questions, we want them to talk. Here we go. We'll give it our best. This podcast will be up on this show this weekend. When do you know the homestead dream has become the nightmare? Did you know that was gonna be your first question? It's the only question he has. Other than that, I got a few notes. When did it become the nightmare? Yeah, what a good podcast. 3 hours coming soon to YouTube. In the meantime, get this book. You will laugh, you will cry. It is so real and authentic. It's something we need these days. Absolutely love it. I had the honor of pre-reading this and writing a blurb. No lamb from the lamb tonight. Come with me, bro. Where you going? Just come with me. It looks like you like vision. And that would have been an easy homestead meal. We're busy all afternoon on a podcast. Just cook a roast. So once every couple of weeks or so, give ourselves a little bit of a break. Ordered it directly from the company for our health, because remember, we're homesteading for health. So homesteading serves us. Wait, why did that jump to 20? That was frozen. You know, it's all frozen. It's gonna take a long time to get it all down though. Okay. Don't worry, that's email, y'all. Alaska, cleanest fish we can get. The Alaska salmon from the Alaska Wild Alaska Company. Okay, whoa, that's a homestead sink right there, buddy. Frying cabbage, frying potatoes. We're having fried zucchini too, Lily. Huh, you think I shouldn't? We are on the butter train. No, definitely should. It's that time of year, babe. Eat it till we're so sick of it we won't mind the break. You want to close off the vlog?
