There’s a lot more

A family moves into their new homestead house and spends the day unpacking, setting up the kitchen, installing screens, and processing turkeys with help from friends. They're excited about finally having space for the kids to run around and a fully equipped home that feels like an HGTV reveal.

Having your tea on your couch 60 feet away from your bedroom. The kids have been running around this morning.
So nice, the extra space.
Like, how did you sleep though? You've not been sleeping well. Lily hasn't been sleeping well.
Fabulous. Well, I mean, it probably helps that I was, um, active for about 16 hours.
Oh, you probably got 20,000 steps in. It was a long day.
So that, that helped, I'm sure, with the sleep, but also like just super comfortable. It was last night when Henry and I was putting Henry to bed, he's like, I want to go back to the farmhouse. And then this morning I said, you want to go back to the farmhouse?
And he said no.
No, he enjoyed— he's been enjoying it here. There's so much— it's just like there's so much more space. I did think though, like, is there too much space? I don't know if there is.
That's gonna come in handy in a minute. Them being able to run around like that.
I know, I was thinking I should see what kind of like little— I want to get Henry some sort of car, but not anything that can ding things up. So maybe like a rubber, I don't know, rubber, rubber-edged something or other.
Happy day, we have moved into our dream house. We have not eaten supper in here yet, or a meal period.
No, well, we will. So that's the goal today, is to get all our food goods over here and to get like mine and yours clothes and Mary's clothes, and we need trash cans.
We need trash cans. That'll make us feel officially moved in. Feels like we stayed in a nice Airbnb is what this was like.
Yeah, yeah, it does. It doesn't feel like it's like—
it's— the kitchen is kind of ill-equipped, right? So far there's no food in the fridge.
We also need to get the screens, screens on the windows so that I can open them. I smell like—
get rid of some of these flies— new house smell, which I don't want to smell. Can you guys see the flies? I'm glad they can't really kind of see the flies. Maybe they can. Come on, Mr. Henry. Wow, we're going in the ergo. Farm must go on. Plus, this gives me a little bit of peace. Get outside, get in the cool morning, do a little bit of chores. Why don't we move them while we're at it? Get 3, 4 turkeys out. It's Thursday. No, it's Wednesday. No, it's Thursday. These guys got to make it to Monday. Don't panic if they get out. Turkeys are definitely one of the most underrated animals on the homestead. Just easy to handle. They're not going anywhere. I'll help you. I could have set up another net, move them over, but we don't mind this little freestyle moment. You can eat turkeys more than for just Thanksgiving or Christmas. Wait, what? We eat once a month turkey divine. Turkey Devon's hot right now. Thinking about making sandwiches, turkey meat sandwiches. Make the turn. That turkey leading is blind. Yeah, both eyes.
No one.
Oh, see it? It's got a gray eye. Eviscerating them is as easy as a chicken, and you get 3 times the meat in one evisceration. Evisceration's like, you know, after the feathers are off, pulling the guts out, pulling all that stuff out. It's a bigger carcass. Doesn't— it doesn't— it's 3 times as big, doesn't take 3 times. You're funny. Well, we kind of missed that, didn't we? Oh, that's a good idea. Yeah, I like it. Connect it first, then build your corner. Oh, I like it. You're smart. How'd you figure that out?
I do it every time this fence—
I do it, and you're just observing, learning. Is that all the boxes from the porch? We might need to make you more boxes, huh? There's some in the container, guys. You got to tape them up. You and I should go get the coolers and we'll start doing the fridge. Hey, we got some more help today.
Good morning.
Heard you needed some help. Yeah, I was talking about him. Look at these muscles. You've been eating chicken legs is what I heard. Yeah, actually, yeah. It's a wild frenzy. I'll vlog as much as I can of it. It's probably gonna be a little crazy. You're going with us. You're gonna help us unpack this. Okay, we got fridge contents from the farmhouse to the holler house. We're excited to get out and you're excited to get in. Yeah, yeah, because you've been bunking with your parents. Yeah, we've been living out of two rooms, so you're about to get some freedom. Said, you know, if you join this community, we split child raising, so okay, you'll get two of these kids. It's not one of those communities you'll see a documentary online Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm scared to walk in here. I know, right? Hey, this is his first time. Let's get his impression. Wow. Oh my goodness. I just walked into an HGTV magazine, right? So Rebecca, it feels like we're staying in a really nice Airbnb. Seriously. This is what I'm excited about. Our first meal. Christening our fridge. There's been a lot of christenings. The insane room in this. I guess it's wider, definitely not deeper, so it can be cabinet depth. Look at that auto shut. It's a homestead house right here, buddy. Full freezer, full, full, full fridge, 4 ovens, 8 burners. That table, that table's 3 of your other tables. That table, that's a legacy table right there. Whoa, Ashley, you cleaned up your fridge good.
Ah, thank you.
We got this fridge to go. It's breakfast time. Can you pull yourself away? So we walk over there, everybody grab something. Breakfast is ready. Everybody's got something. We're not gonna walk from this house to that house without something in our hand. We're getting the trailer loaded. This is the way to move, just right across the street, y'all. My soul sings because I have Really never moved in my life. I grew up 3 miles from here. This land has always been in our property. I moved here— I moved once. When I moved here, when Rebecca and I got married 23 years ago.
Wow, this looks like a home. Oh my gosh, there's furniture! Wow, that really looks like a home now. Yeah.
Wow. What was the last time you saw it?
Last time, I think there was still like paper over the floors.
Oh, so Austin said it feels like he just walked into HGTV.
Yeah, because I wanted to say it's not like an HGTV reveal because it's not set up.
This is a reality show, man. Henry wastes no time back. Now, never mind. Look at him crawling. You choose the countertop, huh? I like it too much. Yeah, I wonder if you all fight less now that you have more space. No, we fought this morning so bad out of choice. Becca, if you roll your eyes anymore, they might fall out of your head. Where are the signed seats? I didn't see any fly traps in HGTV.
I know, right? Austin, you must have missed our fly traps.
There's no fly traps in HGTV. I can't sit here because that lighting That light is terrible. I should sit here and then I can see. This is where Shawn would sit so that he could protect his family. Some of the wacko came in. First meal at a holler house. Hey, you think we're gonna have a problem with that?
Well, that's why we're trying to get stuff here.
Okay, we're going to get shelves for all this junk that we're bringing over. I shouldn't say junk. All this stuff.
Junk.
I know, sorry. See, she caught me. Do you mind teaching Jonah how to install these screens and then he'll get started on that? Mom, what you working on? Lily, help her. Cooking the first roast in here. Pork shoulder. Watch this. Looky here. Forgot that that oven over there is broke. Put it in here. Good thing is, if we break an oven, we're not up the creek without a paddle. We have another one. We didn't break it. I think it was broke on delivery. They're coming in 4 days. We put the screens on. Jonah did. We're gonna keep those flies out of here. Fresh air in. We got the interior designer here. What do you think, Jenna? I love it. It's awesome. You getting pics for your, uh, resume?
Yes. Yeah, well, the kitchen's not done.
I mean, like, how was y'all's first night in here? Oh, it was fantastic.
It was amazing.
One fridge down, looking good. One fridge to go. Grandpa on fly patrol. You know who I thought of when I picked up that fly swat this morning? Grandma. Grandma?
She does that?
She used to do that. Oh, sometimes get 30 or 40. She would just pick it up and go around fly swat. Yep. There's one on the floor.
Yeah, but at least it's soft. They do be soft. Could actually kill them though.
Oh yeah.
So like, say I shot that one right there. Distance too.
Yep, it died.
Dead.
Gone. We're gonna all be able to fit around this table. Annie too, she'll help us with this, uh, taco chili. My famous taco chili. Supposed to be soup, turns into a chili because I like a lot of meat. Has he been basically just eating the cheese off the top?
No, he didn't get any cheese.
Oh.
He wanted cheese. He needed cheese.
He's eating the cheese off the top.
Hey, there's our errand runner.
We're waiting on you. I am, at least. After lunch goals to have this to be a successful day: we're going to get the secondary fridge over there, we got to get the pantry goods from over here, we got some stuff over at the cabin container that needs Shelving, first aid stuff. Guys, we're going from that— that's our pantry— to a small room. I'm excited. This is gonna work better with the camera. Oh wow, is that what we just did? Is that what we did today? Yeah. Dang, that's what that little bar did. I was gonna say, I don't see this dent anymore, but y'all did a good job covering it. But this cannot go into the HGTV house, that's got to go to the farm kitchen. Actually, let's put that in the farm kitchen. Thanks for your flexibility. That's what he does as an editor too, he does one thing and then I'm like, oh no, do it this way, and he has to do rework. Yeah, but bless your heart. I'm making very few changes nowadays, but notice that too, I'm gonna call it changes. I'm not calling it corrections. Unless of course you leave my butt crack in there. Yeah, he gets screenshot bombs. Yeah, if he does, and I save them in my folder. You're gonna have an exposé on your channel someday. One heck of an exposé. You know, I'm just gonna be like, you know what, I just need some views. Let me just— I believe we're putting the farm fridge over there. That means we're gonna be processing milk down here soon. I gotta make some adjustments here. There. No, no, it worked. All right, that works, right? Processing beefs down here, porks. Oh, that's real good. That looks real good. Nice. And should we have a webinar show down here at some point? It's hard to shoot a bad video in this house. I like it. Oh, it's leaking some more. Man, so little over there. So big in the farmhouse. Gotta get some things out of the container. Things are going well. Okay, while we were in there, they got the shelves out. You quickly get in.
Come on, dude.
We have to box the books up later. Henry's pooped his pants.
It's on his shirt.
Oh, don't sit up. Sit up. Don't sit up. Don't sit up. Jonah, can you spot him? He's tearing up our shelves. Energy is waning. What do you have? Oh, I don't know, just keep them over here. A lot of this we vowed to— she vowed to— we don't use it in a year, we're not putting it in. Well, we're breaking that rule. Let's get the— we gotta get one more. Wait, energy's waning. All right, one more, uh, shelf, and then I think we'll put away at the house shelves.
Okay. Yearbooks, right?
Yes, and those are ones I've read this year. I've read all these books since my birthday. I've read all these books. I kind of like that white shelf look. What do you think, Austin? White shelves the whole— I like that, all the way up to the railing. I love books. I'm on track for reading 52 books in a year, one book a week. Excited. Learned a lot. More Friends. Goal is to clear this out of the way, put the pantry shelves, and then put all this stuff up. No more going to the container. Look at this pantry. Look at this pantry. It ain't even full, not even close. We're gonna shove it all the way up to the top. I'm gonna put a fridge in here. We're getting there. 1 hour to supper. We just got a little bit of cleaning to do. Third meal, just like that. I'll show you guys our progress after this. Austin, I gotta show you something. Remember, if we have electrolytes and ice, we really have nothing else to worry about. What? Go ahead. Oh yeah. Yep. Wow, and this is like nice ice. We are so happy to be in here. Can you tell? Cleaner's coming back Monday— Friday, tomorrow. TV was starting to get hung today, should be hanged up tomorrow night. Just in time for movie night. We have cleaned this up. No more boxes here. Self-closing drawers. Big counter space. It was— it's so easy to cook. Plenty of room for our stuff. Pantry just right here. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh, you don't understand. We've been having to go outside to our pantry, and then once we had to move out of the cabin, we had to go 600 feet to our pantry. It's just picked up and so nice. We're just resting so nice. I don't think I imagined certainly didn't give Rebecca enough credit. I could not imagine just how nice this would feel. If there's a heaven on earth, it was last night, just putzing around in this house, going to bed, sleeping in a little bit this morning. It was nice.
Happy day.
