This 2 Day Old Calf Following Its Mother is Adorable

The video is a candid, day‑in‑the‑life vlog of a family homestead. The narrator (Speaker A) guides the children through a busy morning of feeding pigs and sheep, experimenting with molasses as a treat, and planning a new mobile livestock pen that will require welding and careful breeding timing. They discuss pasture management, converting a 2‑day paddock into a 4‑day grazing area, and outline the breeding schedule to align with the last frost date. The family checks on a 2‑day‑old calf, handling colostrum feeding and herding the newborn with its mother. Garden produce—including carrots, kale, lettuce, collards, and large butternut squash—is displayed, with plans to preserve the harvest through winter. The vlog also shows routine repairs (door bolts, washers) and coop cleaning. Later, the family prepares a Labor Day meal: an almond‑coconut flour apple bundt cake, chocolate cupcakes, burgers, and other dishes, while the children play in costumes, release confetti, and act as robots and Buzz Lightyear. Throughout, the tone is informal, enthusiastic, and family‑centric, highlighting the challenges and joys of self‑sufficient living.

Good morning, fellas. Buenos días. Good morning to you too. I won't leave you out. Do you want to feed you? What you doing, buddy? Can you reach? You mulching the poop? Can you reach it?
Yeah.
Here, let's get you a bucket. Uh, oh yeah, get the— get their alfalfa pan out of there and throw it in the pigs. All right, is any droppings in that?
Nope.
Okay, shake it and then drop in their pan and let them have it. Hopefully we're gonna try some molasses on that later today. See if that entices them a little more. What you doing?
Trying to get them out of the hay.
Show them that you've given them that feeder. Now stand there, stand there. All right, there we go. Good boy. We're hoping to put these guys actually in a mobile pin like this. You won't need the shelter, but a huge mobile pen that can be moved out on the pasture. So I've been talking with Ben about that because it's going to need some welding. He knows how to weld. Hopefully we can get some supplies for that this week. So if we put these guys in a pen, we can't— we don't want to put them with the— right now we don't want to put them with the used because they could breed. And we're hoping for breed all at once, spring babies. May 10th is our last frost date, so 5 months pregnancy, putting them in with the used December 10th. You got this, Jonah. Okay. Check on the youth. Okay, everybody's alive and well. Um, Rebecca has been doing those, so I'm gonna leave it to her. Came to get my apron, and look who's awake! How's it going? Good. Doesn't look good. How's it going this morning? Are you wanting to go with? Are you needing a snack or what? Okay, let's go change. Come here, let's put your socks on. You don't want any socks? Are you not going with me? Are you going with me?
No?
Oh, okay, then we don't have to wear socks. Mr. Brown has changed his mind. He doesn't want to go with— because I don't— I think he just doesn't want to put socks on. He still does want his apple and cheese. Here you go, buddy. Apples and cheese. Enjoy your book. And Mr. Brown, your boots are right there. Hey, before we go to do the ICs, I need to show you guys something.
Boom!
You see it? Carrots, carrots. Uh, what do we got here? Kale, lettuce. Collards. It's a little shaggy, but we're focused high on the animals. Obviously, it's harder to get clean organic meats. It's pretty much impossible. So, and if you can, it's very expensive. So we're focusing on that. Those end up being our first priorities, uh, the garden second. But I'm thinking we're gonna at least have Arun's garden for sure going into the winter. Yes! All right, about from here to there.
Free the birds!
Clang that door all you want because we're gonna fix it. Yeah, unscrew that. See this? Because we just screwed in with just regular wood screws, when this bangs down on the ground, it jolts. Yeah, it loosens it up. So we're gonna fix that with some bolts. I think because that's crooked like that, it's not gonna screw, it's gonna wobble. Under it or over it? It was over it. Super tricky. Shoot, should have gotten flat washers. Well, we got lock washers. Do we have enough? Ah, well, maybe we'll go for this side. I think that's what I was saying. Okay, yeah, then we don't need a flat washer. It's gonna be a pain. I'm gonna put all this stuff on this apron. The moment of truth. Oh yeah, it's gonna line right up. No, no, maybe not. So here, while we're at it, we made a mess. Let's clean that out. Mucking stalls is not the worst job in the world. Cleaning out a chicken coop is the worst job in the world. Well, Johnna, it's time to be milking, but we got to do the forest pigs real quick. Look at these guys!
Whoo!
Huge! And look at their wonderful job they did. Holy smokes!
Whoa, it's because it's 9 o'clock, Papa. They don't— they're used to being getting fed sooner.
Really?
Yes, it's like, it's like 8:30. We're 30 minutes late. Have a look at the job they did.
So this is what it looked like before. There's after. We need to do that, this whole strip. And we only have what, 16 days. So how about 9 days here and then 9 days here? So only 2 more moves and then they'll be butchered. Coast is clear. Milking time, or should I say check on this What, 2-day-old calf time? I guess we can try to herd them. Yeah, you heard it, you heard them, and I heard Flossie. We might not need to carry little man if he'll keep up. Let's get you, Miss Thing. Oh look, he's following. It's not even 48 hours old, we're already herding him in with Mama.
That's crazy.
Come on, little guy. You think you can cross the creek? There, look, he's not down. Look at that, that's a smart dude.
He's just going under the fence with mom.
Look who's coming in. Good girl. Amazing. You're gonna get the calf out or you want to leave him in there?
You think we can leave her in there?
We could try. It's slow in the beginning. It speeds up over time, and especially once the milk kicks in. But the milk hasn't come in yet. Still colostrumy because it's really yellow. Did you get him out? He just came out, huh? Cool. You might have to put the rope halter on and tie him at her head because she'll Or just keep him around, just pet him there and don't let him leave because that'll stress her out. Deposit of another kind. Thank you for that, uh, 3/4 of a gallon, girl.
He loves it right there. Yes, on the ears and under the—
You sure are cute. It's okay, it's all right.
She's not gonna hurt him.
She's coming. No, she's, she's not. Watch him follow. You might have to herd him, I guess. Come on, come on, Miss Thing. Also, we need to slow them down. Grass is slowing down. We got to slow down the grazing. We're cutting this 2-day paddock, 2-day paddock, into a 4-day. Probably about what, right here?
Holy moly, look at the size! Huge! That's all we got is big ones. That's our best crop. Oh, come look at these 3 ginormous gigantic squash.
Jonah's putting up our lane. You know, we could give them all this in 4 days, but then they would just go and eat, eat, eat. All the really— all their favorite stuff and not kind of get more of the vegetables, so to speak. They'd eat all the ice cream. We really need more posts, but we also got to go eat breakfast. Now roll that up and just put it on top of that, or this.
Watch that, make it even.
Sure. And then roll that up, put it on top of that. Good. Prize-winning butternuts right here, babe.
Nice. Those are really good looking.
You get to pick which one you want to take.
Are you guys entering the fair today? Tomorrow?
Today or tomorrow. I have to—
did you include a butternut?
Yes.
Oh wow, this is what it looks like after breakfast. Eggs and Swiss chard. Simple breakfast from the land. Absolutely delicious. Now for the unsung part of the homestead: cleaning up this mess. Little afternoon midday checkup on these guys. Oh good, they've eaten all their food. They haven't eaten their alfalfa, but they've eaten their hay. I'm not gonna hurt you guys. They are not excited about the alfalfa pellets. We really need a treat though. Wow, to come see us, you know what I mean? They come towards us, not away from us. So how about just a little bit of alfalfa? And how about some molasses? Try not to do grain. You want to stay away from grain. We're about 100% grass-fed. See if they go for that. They're hungry, so maybe they will. Try it, Wither. That's the Wither right there on the right. He's supper real soon. Come on, man. That's a ewe trying it. Perfect white. Ah, she didn't pick up any.
Nobody's trying.
These molasses have an acquired taste. I thought, I thought this was a treat for sheep, so we'll leave it and see if they eat it. What they do like is this hay. And just like that, they got over their fright, came out of the corner. Gonna take care of these this morning. I don't know if he did the mulch though. They need to have their manure covered. Let's cut another patch of green for the, for the rams. You guys want some green? How are you? How are you guys? I'm just gonna put the greens right there, but they've manured, so I think I need to deep bed this area before I put down their food. All right, I've got some down right there. Let's just put some greens there. How's that, guys? Don't rush all at once. There we go.
Yay!
I'm back over at the ewes. Nobody's eating that alfalfa.
Come on, guys.
Okay, those ewes going to town on the hay, not eating the alfalfa, didn't care about the molasses. Just wrapped up the edit. 4:51. But look, look what we got coming here. I'm glad it's Labor Day today. Hope you all had a great Labor Day. What are you making for us?
I'm making— I have an in the oven, an apple bundt cake, and then I made, um, chocolate cupcakes too because we can't just have one dessert.
Yeah, so what's the starch in it? What's the flour?
Almond and coconut flour.
Almond and coconut flours. Ooh, Bundt cake, man. She's feeling good. She didn't just make one dessert, she made two.
And I have to make dinner. I've cleaned all this up and make dinner.
Okay, do I got time to go check the sheep before I need a grill? Okay, I have a lot to do. We just checked on the sea monsters. I got Lily helping me. How they doing, Birdo?
One's her.
Is it? Okay, feels a little warm in here. Maybe we should turn— I'm gonna turn off the brooders. Until tonight. Okay, here I want to surprise Mom. She got us these nice— well, we got these nice shelves at Lowe's for organizing. We're gonna put all our chicken stuff right here. You wanna do that? Well, Grandma said it was gonna be easy. It's not easy. Um, I thought it was gonna be a quick put up, but it's not. So let's go. Yeah, I just had a Massive shot. Let's look at it this way, I had a nice sauna session. Look at my skin. All right, this is what I came to do anyway. Hey, you didn't touch those alfalfa pellets. That there, let's get the bottom out. They didn't like the bottom.
Hey.
They did eat their greens. I think the sheep knocked over their pail of water. You're welcome, guys.
Enough water?
Uh, still lots of vinegar in there. That's probably enough. Yeah. Hey, you want to sit in here with them while I go do the rams?
Sure.
Thank you. Oh wow, look!
Or the horse and molasses. Yeah, this hay, some of it's really good and some of it's not so good.
Were you able to pet them?
Yeah, I petted mine on the forehead.
Nice. Good job moving slow.
Is that one yours?
Oh, yours is with the black mask. Oh, look, see, one gets flighty, they all get flighty. Tomorrow's another day. Maybe they'll be hungry for alfalfa by tomorrow. Smells delicious in here. Look at this. What you got cooking around?
This is icing. It's a special dairy-free cream cheese frosting for Amy.
Yeah, look at the apple cake. Rebecca, you did a wonderful job cooking this meal. Oh, thanks. These are cucumbers. Are we done?
Cucumbers, onions. This is our tomatoes and onion. And—
our burger.
Our burgers. Not our hot dog. Our butternut squash.
Our broth.
Our ugly cakes.
Yeah, but they taste good, right?
Presentation doesn't matter.
It's not making the COVID of Celebration, but—
Cupcake time!
What do you call this? Apple—
apple—
apple cake. Is that what it's sweetened with?
Honey.
I want to hear everybody's impression. Mom's cake.
Mmm.
Everybody's mmming it.
Labor Day heaven.
This is Labor Day heaven. What is going on out here? Is this what happens when the adults clean up?
Yeah.
Jonah's got confetti. What are you guys?
Robots!
Robots! We got Lily and who's this?
Buzz Lightyear.
Okay, nice.
I am Buzz Lightning.
Azariah Buzz Lightning.
Giddy up!
Everybody run around crazy.
Oh, happy Maya! You're awake! He broke the balloon!
