This Chicken Harvest HACK Saved our Garden

Victor runs through a day on his small farm, from milking cows to moving chicks. He shares a method for humanely raising chickens for food, uses sheep to mow the garden, and makes his own fertilizer to keep costs down.

You coming, Lauren? You coming, Emmanuelle? Best friends?
Always. Papa, are we going to walk? You want to walk?
No, we're not going on a walk today, Mr. Brown. We are terribly late. It's 8:30.
Bye, Papa.
I'm not gonna push myself too hard today. I'll admit it, don't know if we're gonna have time for projects. Gonna just be fortunate to get the milking done. Stayed up way too late last night, it was like 1:30. Haven't done that in a long time, since like Great American Farm Tour-ish. Oh, look at this, man! You guys look like a bunch of old school farmers raking hay. What are y'all doing? Oh, you are raking hay. You harvesting this hay? What are you gonna do with it? Playing it. Okay, that's fun. Are you saying you went down, Mr. Brown? Okay, there you go. Why are we up so late? Well, we had a busy day, the normal chores. Cleaning up for our good friends Jody and Krista coming today and— big edit, big edit. That was one of those 6-hour edits when you have interviews. Arthur, what do you owe that chicken? Hmm. I'd say, I think respect is probably the word that comes to mind for me. When you have a story When you have B-roll, when you have stock footage, and you have like 4 songs.
A weird feeling.
You could do this all day, huh, Erin? And you gotta puzzle that all together. It can take a while. Look, for the most part they're staying in. I wondered if you guys would stay in. This is game changer. This is special. This means only the ICs are getting out, only two. This may mean we can move the bigger chicks into the flocks where they're gonna go, the main flocks. And that they want to get in back in there bad. I really enjoy making movies like that. That's why I'm willing to put in the hard work. I think there's also a very important message to it. Very important. It's actually a message to meat eaters, and it's in response to a common question I get a lot, like, how do you not get attached to these animals? How do you harvest after you've put in so much care? Good and valid questions. I think I got the answer. Oh no, why are you out? Getting a little bit of wingage. That's probably why you're able to get out. Here you go, there you go, ladies. That fence— 90% chance this fence is not on. Nope. Helps if you turn the fence on. Tomatoes though, look, we're getting some good healthy color on that. I think all the treatment— we got some plants recovering in here. They're making hay. Yeah, they are. They're the little farmers out there, old school hay making.
I want to do that so bad, I don't understand it.
That's what they want to do for fun. I know. I guess it beats video games, huh? Yeah, any day. I want you guys to see something. Look in here. Water. Permanently clean bedding, happy chicks. Same thing with the guinea. I didn't do that. I normally do. Jonah saw that I was sleeping in and needed some rest. Jonah did that. I just gotta take a timeout here for a second. Hey Jonah, did you do the chores for me this morning?
Come on up, we're tired.
He says, I just want to get back to work. You just want to get back? You just want to get back to work, huh? Get him all.
Get him, get him, get him, get him, get him, get him.
What, Laura, you want a Papa Bear hat? You like that?
You like that?
You're funny. I did.
You came with John on the chores.
That's good. Laurel, did anybody tell you you're the best dog? Doesn't bark, goes with the kids, just so quiet and chill. She's spending more time outside now. Doing great about it, not complaining about it, not sitting at our door whining. And if needed, she's on call. Floor food pickup. I think we should make a fun movie about Laurel. What do you think? You remember that tractor video I did just for kids? That's like so wildly popular. Oh, he's got this. You got it. You got it all by yourself. And your overalls look handy. Overalls. Like over 6 million views. What if we did a puppy video for kids with Laurel to go around the farm, show the animals, that kind of stuff? Wouldn't that be fun? Okay, what do we got here? We got our— only one thing missing: a cow. Pooper! There's something so right about a goose in with a flock of chickens. This scene— Three Sisters Garden growing, pigs happy. Absolutely love pigs, just for— I mean, just for their garbage disposal skills. We can turn like any, anything into bacon and sausage. You ready? Come on, come on, Mustang, let's do this. I'm a little late, so maybe you got some extra milk, maybe you got a little extra rest. Stud, you know the drill. He knows the drill, but he don't like the drill. Watch, he does not like to be isolated. Sorry, she's thrown off. I did forget something. I forgot. Come on, I'll bring him out. Okay, I'll bring him out. I forgot to put Bear out and her snacks. Oh look, she doesn't get on your head there. Oh, you coming? Look, you're no dummy. Licking your chops. You watch, these cats will be here in just a matter of minutes. Everybody comes down. The provider, the family provider right there. I know what else I forgot. Hey, you're missing it! You're missing the milk time. There you are. Come here. Hey, do you want to help me milk? I need somebody to give the cats and dog a little bit of milk. Would you do that for me? You would do that?
Okay, okay.
Hey, what do we listen to in the morning, Mr. Brown? See if he knows this. Who do I listen to in the morning?
You.
A little motivation inspiration from Zig Ziglar, old school inspirational speaker. Like he says, it's easier to stay up than to get up.
So here, Titty cat dog.
Yep.
Have you ever noticed that when somebody's about to lose something they've been complaining about, whether it's a car, a home, a mate, a job, or whatever, when all of a sudden it appears they're going to lose them, it takes on brand new value? Get a sheet of paper out and at the top of it write, I like my job because the healthiest of all human emotions is gratitude. You will have started to change from a fault finder to a good finder.
Let's get in.
Are we matching? Yeah, you both sit. We're both sitting on something. All right, so what I was saying earlier about that video, it's special. It's got a special message, the one I made yesterday. I think— hey, would you guys, would you guys do me a double solid? Go and watch that video. Hey, hey, hey, hold on. You're gonna get that for the cows. You're in charge of the dogs and kits— kittens. Okay, let me say something to the camera. Back to the video that I made yesterday. 6-hour edit, very special message. I think it would inspire you, at least if you're a meat eater.
I, I'm called a dog and kitty cat.
Okay, you can do the dog and the kitty. Guys, he's gonna do the dog and the kitty cats. So would you guys do me a double solid? If you haven't already, go and watch it. I'll leave the link there and down in the description. And I don't— I've never asked for this before— would you go and watch it and then below that video just hit share? Just, just help me spread the message. When I publish late like that, I think it was like 12:30, it doesn't do that great. But, uh, I think you guys can help me. I don't want anybody to miss it. I don't want anybody to miss out on that, so Let's grow this together. Let's grow this movement together.
Kitty cat, kitty cat, dog.
Okay, give me your bowls, buddy. Is this one for the dog? Yeah.
No, this one is for the dog.
Okay, give me the one for the dog since the dog's here. Okay, there you go.
Can I get some? Hey, they want dog. No! Look, Lolo.
What now? Oh my God, hang on, Gideon! Wait, wait, wait, stop, stop! You fell out! Get in there, Josiah!
All right, go! Now get on this, Gideon! Gideon, get on! Get in, get on!
Wait, now hang on, Gideon! Don't jump off! I'm strong.
All right, go!
Go! Go! Go! Would you have a protest, Miss Violet? She peed in the stanchion. Good thing I had my lid on my milk bucket. Uh-oh, Beck.
What?
She's only giving about A little over half a gallon. Do you think she's just— it's going through her ebb and flow, like giving less? Oh, there was somebody that could help us read it.
You just have to get Heather.
Okay, somebody in the comments did offer to help us read the blood tests on Violet, so maybe that'll give us a better idea. Make sure she's Okay. What?
Um, there's a cabbage in the garden and I kissed it.
There's a cabbage? We actually have a cabbage garden?
Yeah, come see! Look at the size of that guy! Are y'all excited?
Okay, come on, give them a moment, give them a moment. Hey, you lost?
No, is that— is the drone up there?
You're driving so slow.
John, are you flying the drone, bro? I gotta get you like me coming in.
Okay, cue up the music.
Cue up the epic music quick.
What's up, bro?
No, you're in the Appalachian Mountains now.
What's up, buddy?
How you doing, Lily?
Your favorite person. Alright, do I get a hug now?
Oh, we've come so far.
Hi. You missed me? Becca missed us. It's been so long. Can he give you a hug, Jodi?
No.
Because he said, I'm gonna hug Jodi.
He did? He did.
Can we have it? Oh.
He said— I got candy.
I got money.
Laural, you coming with us on evening chores?
Yes, I haven't really got to hold her much today.
Hey, look at our Swiss chard! Something we put on this stuff is the blood. I'm pretty sure boosted it.
Well, look, look at how good these are looking. Look at these tomato plants.
Look at this, it's working. This stuff is so much greener. How lush that is. And even down here, look at this too. Look, even these plants, Rebecca, even this tomato.
I was just gonna tell you that.
Now look though, that one's producing fruit and it's not even 6 inches high. Where? Well, pinch it off. Come on, you two. You guys ready to put up a fence? Oh yeah.
Yeah.
See, what we're doing here is $60 to mow this one time, or we mow it ourselves, or we put sheep in most of it. And let them do the mowing, and we get lamb. Does that sound like a good deal, Kaden? Yeah, okay. Sheep charge— sheep, they charge much? They don't charge much, and they give fertilizer with their manure. So what lawnmower do you know that leaves behind fertilizer? He does. Yeah, well, he told— he's down on you, huh? You peeing in the yard? You've been in the yard? Let's get them out of this, Jonah. That was overgrown, probably gonna have to mow that, but we're gonna try to keep on top of this smaller stuff. They mow it much better. Come on, gentlemen, we got you nice tender grass over here, folks. What a sight! Happy sheep right there. A perimeter all around in case they get out of their paddock. We're gonna side in this perimeter. I'm hopeful.
Let's try this thing.
Jody hooked up the big boy. Are you confident, Jody? Well, try it, try it. Boom! It's not that high voltage. Oh, it's not much of an improvement.
Seriously, down to the bottom.
Go down to the one it's hooked on. Quick question, does it work? Oh, it is. It's a little better too. You got 6. My job here is set at 4. Okay, well, is that because it's— it's— it's— it could be that the batteries aren't charged. We have our fence hooked up. It might not make any sense to you from this level, so let's go in the air and have a look.
