What?
Okay, you gonna go with me this morning? Yeah, good. She's wanting to go with me this morning, and they all— they're all wanting me to go with them on the chores. So I'll do the chores. If we have time left, we'll do the project. One of you guys gave me an idea to make our low tunnels work. Right now our low tunnel poles are too wide, but one of you guys I think had a really good idea, and we're gonna see if it's gonna work. You're Patrick? Yes, sir. Hey, nice to meet you, Justin. Hey, do this if she jumps on you. Put your knee out. We don't want her to do that. I'm Ashley. Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. This is Colt. Jonah, I'm confused. Help me out, buddy. I'm rusty. There's a hole in the side of this bag.
Sorry, I didn't have my Leatherman on me, so here's what I had, and I just scooped it out in there. All right, that I need to do— you have to do that on the land.
Okay, well, let's do it. Patrick, we'll get you starting. Here's the hose. We're gonna throw pans out to you and you can wash them. Pretend you're gonna eat off of these pans. All right, look at the broad shoulders, boy. So I'm looking around and seeing what needs to be done. They're definitely done in here. There comes a stage when they begin to stop fluffing it and they begin to start compacting it. So we're going to definitely get these guys out of here. They're overdue. I have an idea for a flatter crop garden system right there. This tends to get washed down a little bit, especially with the chickens. It's to be thinner up here and thicker down there. Didn't seem to matter in our Winter crop garden. Remember, I hope that this would just pop and be unrecognizable when we came back. Look at that chard. Boom, boom, boom. It doesn't look any different to you because you've been seeing it grow every day. Do you know you'd be washing out pans this morning, Patrick? Uh, I kind of expected it, but that's what I'm here for. You gonna ride that pig?
That pig about ate me.
Lily, I'll help you in in just a second, okay? We're gonna get people occupied. All right, hand us the feed, Patrick.
Silver bucket for pigs.
Go for it. You guys just took over, didn't you? Yeah. Okay, here, honey, we got the pigs distracted. Oh, okay, let's get those eggs. The broody hen was in there. These are warm. Yeah, she's still broody. She just needs to be getting something to eat. We're gonna have to catch that broody hen and put her in the broody breaker.
But she might— but, but she might have eggs because the rooster might have made a chick.
That's true. Well, it's not the time really to hatch chicks because it's coming into the winter.
I busted up a rooster fight. He started chasing, I walked up, I stopped it.
Okay, good.
One got away and the other one lost.
Oh, show me where the pig went in the house.
It was raining bad, so we decided to put it inside so their grain wouldn't get drenched.
Oh yeah, look, it looks rich. Do you think this eating was from the pigs stepping on it.
There was some on the new— this one, they got on before. Is there a heavy load? Look at this rooster.
Yeah, he's a good one.
He got a big comb.
That's nice. How'd he escape the slaughter?
Uh, he looks good. He's nice. He, he, he's a good rooster. And then, um, we left him. We watered them and fed the pigs and left them.
So the pigs got in here, and that's when Papa, look out! Did you get them all out of the nest box, Lily? Yeah, good job. So Jonah, do you think the pig got in here and too much weight and ripped that up?
Uh, I saw him walking out of here.
Okay, we'll see. He's pulled there, so he must have laid down. Oh Papa, we're gonna have to do a whole new cross piece of this middle section.
Papa, he must have thought it was a back scratch and rolled on it. Then I came back and the pigs walked out of the chick shawl. One pig. I don't know if the other one was in there and just got out.
All right, well, let's not put the feed in here anymore even if it's raining. Yeah, that was not—
I see where you're coming from on that, but sorry, I didn't know that was gonna happen.
I know.
Um, let's fix it tomorrow.
I didn't know either. I wouldn't have thought. Is that the broody hen?
No, I don't think it's not. That didn't work.
You're trying to straighten the pig's tail? Yeah, Patrick's giving us farm hacks. Well, you don't want me to help you?
No.
I'll take it. Let's watch these boys do this. There they go. All right, Patrick, come grab this water. I'm gonna pull this up, you pull the— you pull the stand out. Okay, good.
Is it time to pour the bucket of seed out?
Yeah, go ahead. We have about an hour left, so we're going to take advantage and weed. Why would you just come out here, Patrick, and just pick up a hoe and start going to town on my garden? Because I like to help people. Bless you. There are two tricks to doing drudgery jobs like hoeing. One is doing it with friends and talking at the same time, and the other is to have right tools. Yes, the tool merchant sent us these, and we've gotten a scythe from them before, and they're just excellent tools. This is a— this is a stirrup hoe. This is the wider version. Jonas got the smaller.
Can I hit that dead one?
Sure, just do barely, barely. See, look, that's real nice. Just going back and forth. Oh yeah, how do you like that versus the other hose?
I love it.
Okay, so did you guys hear that? The 10-year-old said he loved it. Josiah's got the handheld hoe. This is turnips right here.
I did over there.
Good, it looks good down there, Josiah, for real. And Colt, show us what you do.
Colt, I just do that so that the sharp end just gets more of them at a time.
That's perfect. And you can get real close with that without hitting the plant, can't you?
Yeah, I can just go like that.
Nice, I like it. Good job. Okay, Mom and Dad, the trick to get Colt to weed at home is get him cool looking tools, a fun little tool like that, a real tool. That's at toolmerchant.com. I'll leave the link down in the description. And he's giving y'all 15% off if you guys want to get some of these tools, if you just use the offer code abundant. Abundant.
How does that look? It looks fluffy too.
It looks good, man. It looks freshly weeded. All right, Patrick, one thing— one problem we have here is this. These poles are for like a 62-inch bed, and I would have put a path in the middle of one of my beds, and that's not maybe as efficient as I would like it to be. So it's going to be kind of hard to walk through here, and it's not so hard to walk through here, but once you have covering on and then weights on, it's just going to be near impossible. One viewer had the idea of turning these diagonal. Keep that one there. Yeah, you want to like go like 45, stay right there. So it really needs to be more like that, which I think— here, you want to hold that on me, Lily? It's recording. Which I think that would work. And then drive this in the ground as far as you can by hand, and that's going to give us a lot more room. Patrick, let me do this whole row. Yeah, you can do this whole row with the end one. I guess you can use this as a backup, Lily, so you can see us. I guess— see how that just springs out like that? Yeah. Go with it. Okay, don't look, look, just wind it in. Yeah, maybe till you're about to hit that string. Guys, this lettuce is ready. I mean, it's ready, totally harvestable from here on out. It'll still get bigger. Look, that's lunch, there's breakfast. Look at this spinach, it's huge. We'll have to have some of that in our eggs this morning. And then there's turnips and Swiss chard. Almost there. Okay, so that worked. I think that worked. Look how much more room. Oh yeah, we did it! We have the row coverings now, but I want to try something new for weighing them down. I don't really like the sandbag idea, and I saw something in New Mexico I want to try to implement here, but I don't think we have to rush and do that today, so it's probably more like tomorrow. We had a great visit with Patrick and his family this morning. We have 2 more visits today. Roots and Refuge right now have just pulled up, and Randy Klyman and his family is coming tonight. That will be a lot of fun. Hey! Hello everybody! And my number 1 fan! Give me 5! Good to see you again! On my home court. On my home court. Hi guys. Hey!
Hey, how are you?
How are you? Thank you guys so much. Hey, hey, how are you? I'm really good. How are you? Good to see you guys. Look at Mr. Brown, you hide behind Josiah. You guys act like you've never seen other boys and girls before. How is it? How's the Alaska fresh salmon? So good. Oh my gosh, yeah, Alaska fresh salmon from our buddy Doug Off Grid in Alaska. I'm Doug Rudolph. I live off-grid in Anchor Point, Alaska. He texted me, wanted me to ship me some salmon. I said heck yes, and I thought maybe it'd be a fillet or two, like 20 pounds. How's it, Beck? How's it, Jeremiah? This is the best fillet of salmon I've had ever. Good. Have you ever had Alaska salmon? No, actually I haven't. Never had Alaska salmon. What about you?
It's amazing.
So good. Hey Batman, you ready to move these cows? Yeah, we meant to bring the water. Okay, everybody grab some posts. We want to move the cows before it gets dark. It's getting dark so early now. It's only 6 o'clock. Sun's about to go over the mountain. Rebecca, let's see. Come here. This side's good. Wow, it's not too bad. Hey, Stet, how you been? How you been since I've been gone? You're looking good. Your fur's coming in, your winter coat. We've got your posts up. We just got to put the line up. Fresh grass. Your coach coming in too. Yes, thank you for having us. I appreciate it. Yes, thank you guys personally for coming. Like, you kind of came out of your way. Yeah, but it was totally worth it. Yeah, totally worth it. We guys got to eat salmon, hang out with you. Yeah, delicious salmon. Oh, here they are. Roots and Refuge are leaving and the Kleimans are coming.
Hey!
Hi!
How's it going?
Hey! They've been driving a long way.
Good to see you!
Hey buddy, how are you? Good. Thanks for having us. Yeah, you too. Appreciate it. Thanks for coming. Okay, so is it warmer down here or what? Uh, yeah, we definitely, uh, you like don't need that sweater. Definitely packed way too warm for sure.
