This Is How Getting Pigs On Pasture is Supposed to Go

The Homestead Dream Team moves three pigs and a sow to pasture using ramps and gates, showing low-stress handling. Between the work, the crew cooks turkey and shares a family meal, while one member recounts his husband's colon cancer journey and decision to seek a second opinion after chemotherapy.

We gotta get the 3 little pigs out working our pasture. We got a mama sow due anytime. Gotta get the boar out of her pen. We got the homestead dream team. Jason. Hey, JD. Oh, cousin JD. Okay, y'all remember old JD. And then the hollers. We're gonna knock this out, guys. We'll get the pigs in, we'll shut that door as quickly as possible. Grab the, uh, the ramp, put it on the forks. Hey, we're waiting on you, Chief. I'm coming, I'm coming. No drama today. I know as much as you YouTube would love to see the Homestead Dream Team herd these pigs, I think the Homestead Dream Team would make this go smooth. They're still small enough we could wrestle them if we needed to, or chase them until they just absolutely wear out. Yeah, that too. Jonah's picking up the net. We're just relaxing, we're taking our time. They actually might just walk in. Then we're gonna have a pig dream team if they just walk right into that trailer. But that would obviously be the most peaceful.
It's too easy.
Yeah, so what we'll end up doing is we'll get two of you in there with pig boards and we'll just kind of pressure them in there. We're not going to get any excitement, but we'll just kind of take our time and get them in there. If we're gonna have any excitement, it's gonna be right here.
Good.
Good, good, good, good. Perfect. This is good. You guys are funneling them nicely. Oh yeah, now you're home free. Home free. Jonah, did you put their feet in there? Okay. Yeah, he's gonna lift the ramp up, then you can shut the trailer just out. Maybe you can shut the trailer. Thank you, Ben. Don't go too far with it because we're gonna put it on the tractor. Good deal. I apologize, no drama. Nice. Made it to the field, no drama. Let's continue the streak. How about that, Ben? Sounds good. So let's pull this up, Jonah, right here. Or Ben, since they're doing the grounding rod. Let's open this, Ben. Let's go ahead and open that and maybe wrap it around the, the trailer there. So what we'll do, we'll open— actually, we'll have the gate. Pickboards are in here. Yeah, we'll have it, and we'll have the, uh, the gate. So if you open that, Ben. Are y'all ready? The vlogging camera's ready. It's got— it's on. Okay, I don't think I'm any use. I need to get out of the way. Okay, y'all ready? They might just come out. They might just come out, which is fine. Let's get this a little bit closer. There you go. He's gonna swing it to you, Jason. You give it to the boys and then y'all pick that up. Come on, pigs! Give them a second. What we don't want to do is push them into the electric fence like we— you and I did last time, right? Then Yeah, that was— we pressured them too hard.
Yeah, look at this.
This is where they belong.
Yep. JD's gonna get to drive Cubby.
We're having a party. Rooted 6, you ready for the party? I'm ready. You want to come help me cut up some birds? Do it. This is fall off— so much fall off the bone. We don't even need to cut it. Yeah, you just tear it. Turkey was the same way. That's high heat, folks. 400 for 3 hours. It's one of the hottest days of the year. It's not that bad in here. Meg, you the popcorn? I am the popcorn queen. You're getting it going. Charge me today. Rebecca, we ready Ready to eat? All right, let's see. Go ahead, Lorraine. Come on, Jason, don't be shy. Come on, kid. Well, go easy on it, kids. Don't get more than you can eat.
The everyday worry compounded with the worry of my husband and what, what could happen is really— it's a lot. It's a lot. We went through 3, 3 chemos here in North Carolina, and then the oncologist decided that she wasn't going to do the scan at 4 weeks and she wasn't that her surgeon wasn't willing to do the surgery and didn't think that he would be a good, a good candidate for surgery and stuff. And at that point I said, okay, we need to seek a second opinion.
We all have ups and downs. We've all been in the pit or know somebody who's been in the pit. That's what episode 6 of Rooted was about— this family, this homesteading family who the, the father got cancer, like Not just cancer, but colon cancer. And this is an inspirational story about why they got growing food, what happened once they got cancer, and how, you know, as you can imagine, the homestead started to slack. Then it started needing some finances. And this show, we were honored to do this show that is completely different from our other Rooted shows. Come in, get the dream team together. As Ben would say, still have that barn building mentality where the community comes together and we help each other. You guys have helped me so much in my, in my healing journey. It was time for, for us to give back. It happened a couple of months ago. The timer's going off. Let's go over there. So I know you guys will relate and be inspired by that. So grab the family, pop some corn, sit down and enjoy a show together. There's something so special about all Sitting down on the couch, escaping the troubles of this world, and enjoying an encouraging show together. So I would encourage you to do that. It's streaming now on Abundance Plus. I'll leave the link, but it's easy enough. AbundancePlus.com.
