This is Not the Day to Do the Chores, then be Done

Victor walks through a chaotic day on his family farm: extending water lines to cattle, feeding turkeys and ducks, fixing broken fences, processing milk, and tending tomato rows. He's prepping for a 100-mile bike-packing trip in Pisgah Forest while keeping the whole operation running with help from his sons and sister Rebecca.

Happy Sunday, C day! We've got to address security for our cows, run the electric out to them so we can be off the— on the grid— on the grid. Powerful energizer. They're getting further and further away from home, so we have to tap into a different system. They're gonna run out of water. We can't even reach that from the well. We gotta tap into the mountain. And if all goes well and we're lucky, we're heading to REI, get our mountain bikes repaired, to get ourselves ready for— in 8 days, the boys and I are attempting a 100-mile bikepacking trip in Pisgah Forest. What inspired you to make breakfast? He was hungry. Nice, thank you. First, we gotta do all the chores. Turkeys are jamming, sea monsters are jamming. It's getting harder and harder to keep up with their feed. I'm not keeping up with their feed. Now you've been visiting them twice a day. Have a solution: the King Feeder. They're keeping up with their waters too. 2 gallons. Better get a cap for it or else they'll learn to jump up here and poop in it. Well, they don't need so much heat too. Let's go. Let's get some relief on that. It's better. They seem warm enough. This bedding, because it's vibrant decomposition composting, it gives off some heat too. Too. So I'm actually gonna leave one, only one hoverboarder in here. We're kind of hardening them off for the outside. They're loving the water, they're loving the feeder. Got a little extra feeder for them. Just added one more water. I might as well have made that a 5-gallon water instead of a 3-gallon because it's the same footprint and would last longer. Probably do that pretty soon. Y'all doing going to fix the water line. Do you know where— do you know where it's broken? Yeah, you do? Well, that's helpful. One of the spots that is broken. Okay, we're just gonna go see what's wrong. All right, that relieves me because chores are taking forever. I want to be doing that. That's the exciting project. Process the milk. Looks like you got a task before you. I might be able to help you. I don't know, I've only been able to do the chicks so so far this morning. Yeah, that tells you what— how it's going for me. I just had to smoothify, you know, they've outgrown their feeders and waters. This is not the day you just do the chores and you'll be done. You're trellising tomatoes? Yeah. Nice. There's a chance I could join you. I tend to underestimate things because Jonah is going to try to fix the water. Stage of life is different, isn't it? It used to be we were all having to attack something altogether. You know, everybody's getting more mature. We just kind of divide and conquer and do our own thing. We get more done. They keep up with their own consumption, so to speak. Turkeys aren't going to drink as much. Let's switch it out. Give this 3 gallons to the turkeys. Let's give this 5 gallons to the sea monsters. Maybe an hour. So many chickens are out right now. What's the deal? Our steak came up or something. If I can just get them to come around this corner, they won't be able to go through that. They'll be able to go in. One or two out, but five or six, that's, that's trouble. They're gonna make their way to Rebecca's garden. This is what we want, hugging this fence, going this direction. They went right across it. I could use some help right here. Oh, maybe that's where they were getting out. Hammered a stake down in there. Oh my, they've jacked up their water. Get it away, further away from the compost. I gotta filter the milk. You want to wait there? I thought you were with the boys. Please stay with me. I could really use some help. I, I gotta do chores. Come on, help me. Hurricane Posse, pasture posse, or compost posse? Okay, you go do those posses. I'll work on the milk. Real quick, while the pigs are eating, they have lifted this straight up out of the ground, and it won't be long before they're out of there and in Mom's garden. They're my pigs when they get in the garden, and they're in— it's Mom's garden when the pigs get in my garden. Let's get enough of these zip ties off so that we can drive the post all the way back down into the ground, this time even further. We're gonna be gone. I'm kind of tempted It'd be better they didn't have this outdoor run. Just 2 pigs don't need an outdoor run. With me being gone, it's probably better if we secure this thing. Bending it back, of course, weakened it, but I have an idea now. We have a way now to come off this. I should get a crescent All right, let's do this while they're eating. We gotta get our chain to secure that to the wall. Apparently we really needed this day. This has turned into me really getting the farm in shape. Our trick to keep them off that— we don't need these panels anymore. This takes a lot of wood chips. Being outside to keep it dry. I mean, look, from the rain. This will help us slow down on our wood chips. We only have so many. This panel, at least so far, it's a fence against the fence. It's a fence to protect the fence. Somebody likes the moist wood chips. Saw the boys come back. Let's see, let's see what's going on. Come here and give me an update. Okay, uh, we got the water line going. Their cows are getting water from the mountain. Yeah, heck yeah! What was wrong with the water? Just a bunch of stuff was disconnected and broke. That's it? Yeah, water was catching and coming off the mountain. You didn't have to go address the tank? Yeah. Huh, so it was coming down. The green hands. I know, so gross feeling. This is after and this is before. So you're pruning them too as you go? Yeah, nice. Pruning them, getting all the gunk off of them. I'm not going to be able to pull away, there's too much. Just bringing the farm up to speed. I have to leave the boys to get that grid going. Got one panel up, but look. Yeah, see, you can get his nose under there. Yeah, you can't with the panel there, buddy. Ta-da! Every day I like to get them a little bit of greens, so why not weed our onions? After all, it's why we have these guys. Their proximity— garden will feed the pigs, and the pigs with this compost will feed the garden. Sun's coming down. We got this row. Let's save that other row for another day. That's the trick sometimes, is just doing a little bit at a time. Rummaging through the greens, give them something to do. Look, we have a problem here. Our bug net, it's bulging. It's bulging up. I mean, maybe you don't need it after the point that the plants are pushing it up. Sandbags are better. Maybe the combo. This should be definitely fixed. We'll go do the rest of the chores. Okay, someone turned the heat on. Yeah, so who turned that heat on? All right guys, let's go check the boys' job. Hey, did you figure out the grid? 5.1. What? 5.1. 5.1? Oh, the net is now that it's hooked up to the grid. Did you even unhook it off of this net? It's still powering the woods. No, because it would have been a clip, and I don't get a clip. Maybe not. So what was wrong with the grid line? A bunch of stuff was disconnected. Okay, let's see what kind of pressure we got off the mountain. The boys really got it fixed. Oh my, that's real good! We got water off the mountain. Energized by the grid, all the chores done, a tomato row trellis. How's the water? It's Janet. I said get in. It's been 3 weeks since you're— you've set your hand. Does she have chicks? Look at that. Okay, she's got 3 chicks. These other eggs, we'll give her a day. There's 1, 2, she's got 4. Okay, these other eggs, let's give her till tomorrow. Okay. They don't hatch by tomorrow, they're not gonna hatch. Put the lid back on her. How fun! Okay, not only, not only did we hatch chicks for free, we're gonna incubate them now for free. Mom, mom hen will do all the work. That's it. Where are we? That's it. It's REI. Supposedly having the biggest sale of the year today. We did not know that, but we got to get these bikes in the shop. I see them on you. We're not getting them though. You would lose those so fast. Is this fun? Yeah, well, that— there you go. We, we're prepared largely. That's not much. We got a lot of stuff from last year, and we dropped our bikes off. They'll be done Wednesday. And we are back, and we're gonna gather for our supper. We're putting together a salad. Are peas good on salad? Because we're lacking some toppings. For our salad. Hey, I need to go get some peas. You coming? You want to? Here, take these. Take those. Let's go get some more. There wasn't enough in the kitchen garden, so we're going to come down to the crop garden. Yeah, I think we'll— I think we'll find it. There we go. There's one. Oh, down at the bottom. It's something. Put these in your dump truck and bring them in. Where are the other ones? Oh, okay. All right, bring them. Don't put them in there, put them in the back. Rebecca cooked up some mean Brussels sprouts. Are you gonna try peas on a salad? Oh, steam straight up. All right, I didn't think peas on a salad was a thing, but we're kind of sparse.
