This is NOT What I Was Looking For

The video is a candid, diaristic vlog of a farm‑family’s morning. It opens with a discussion of diaper‑changing routines and the need for a diaper sprayer, then shifts to a series of farm chores. The family prepares an electric fence (Premier One gate) to train three pigs, troubleshooting a faulty Energizer, grounding rod, and broken cable while testing voltage. They also repair the front of a barn, framing a new door for the first time in the barn’s history, and assemble chairs, a couch, flags, and a projector screen for an upcoming weekend event, rewarding themselves with ice‑cream. The vlog captures coordination of milking, gathering tools like a string‑trimmer battery, and planning an automatic chicken‑door opener. Interspersed are observations of a compost micro‑climate that produced warm corn, casual banter among family members, and a sense of busy, hands‑on problem solving on the farm.

You up and at 'em this morning?
Yeah, not by choice.
You got a moment? He would be sleeping if he could.
Rough night?
Uh, not so much a rough night, it's just a night that I couldn't fall back to sleep.
Dirty diapers were here, now you're putting them in the sink. You scrubbing them down? I'm just—
well, these are from last night. I have a routine, but since these are fresh and I just want to get them in the washing machine, I'm just gonna scrub every one.
Wipe her off like that?
I do the poop ones. I'm finding that I can't— I don't feel like they get clean if I don't. I need to get a diaper sprayer.
Oh my gosh, did you get the eggs in this box? No. Oh, you took the box off for the eggs? No, you went out there with that box on like this.
Yeah, I went out there and I gave my daughter—
Oh, that would have worked better with a camera. That's awesome. Okay, you're gonna do chores in that box? Uh-huh. I've been putting something off Finally, today I'm getting around to it.
I think we ate a lot of marshmallows yesterday.
Oh yeah?
All right.
Papa, watch this.
I'm watching.
You're crazy. Today we're gonna set up the training, the fence training for the Three Little Pigs. What is going on in here?
My bridge across the deadly piggy pit.
Is that how you get That's how you get into the pigs without them getting you. Yeah. All right, let's see you do it. They got— they're distracted with me right now. The cool thing is we're feeding them 100% food scraps right now. Well, that's not quite fair. We do have the buried corn in their deep bedding, but what's cool is they've only gone— I don't know, they've only done maybe a quarter of this, and they've shown they can do it. So if they're hungry, they're gonna go after it. So this is kind of a cool way to feed them. You know, food scraps, you never know if it's enough, and if it's not enough, in this case they just dig for some corn. This is nice. Look, I don't think he's letting her in. We got to do it in two pails. Okay guys, yeah, look, come here, right here. There you go, there we go. Well, that's proof compost is working. That's a little bit of Oh yeah, it's a little bit of warmth there. Burn. And that's warm to the touch. Oh weird, we're growing something in the cows— oh, that's corn, I bet. We tried to get this hotter, so we actually wetted this area down, what, 2 days ago. It didn't make it hotter, but it did grow corn. That's a little microclimate because it's under the pole barn. It got wet, but it's south side, so it gets some sun. Listen, hear that? Yeah, listen, I am not kidding you. The Premier catalog said run this wire through— like, you're supposed to run through a piping apparently, because it can, it can break the insulation and ground out. And that's what's happening right now. We turn that off, we're gonna have to trace this. It's broken there and some somehow grounding out. The only way I know to get to it, unless you think we can dig it up out there, that might be easier than trying to dig it all the way up from the source. I feel like it's right in here somewhere. I don't know, it feels like it's hardened up pretty good. Yeah, I don't know. See, I don't know if this is where it is buried or if that's where it is. No. All right, I'm afraid you'll break it with that. Okay, we're gonna have to take this off. That's not too bad. You didn't help me trace this.
Oh.
Well, that was easy, that part. Well, this is easy once you find it. Okay, thank you. I don't see any obvious breaks, do you? Oh, probably right here. Here it is. Yeah, something's got— something stepped on it. I wonder if that was the cow. If we had this much— we have about that much slack, I think we can cut off those damaged parts. And link it back together and tape it. We gotta fix that, but first we gotta do some of the basic chores. Also today, the front of my barn is ripped off. You gotta tear down in order to build up. We're framing in a new door. The door will be here, and for the first time in Burl Hauler history, we'll have a door on this barn. We can open and shut it. We can keep the kids out, we can kind of keep the elements out, and we can keep the light out when we want to watch a movie, when we want to premiere a Rootin'. What, are you cleaning up? Is that gonna be your job today? You guys did a good job building these chairs. Not so good of a job cleaning up. Maybe that's today. We got tables assembled. We've got a couch for the nursing mothers, pregnant mothers. We've got an American flag and I think a North Carolina flag too. Maybe this one's just the American flag. Hanging those on both sides of the projector screen. Inside this, a rug. Chocolate ice cream reward yesterday for finishing up this job. Sweeping, organized, getting ready for the party this weekend. How about vanilla ice cream tonight? What are we getting ready for? He's gonna string trim. You're gonna string trim, big guy?
No, I'm not string trimming right now.
Oh, why not?
I'm waiting for Josiah.
Jonah, can you get us the battery for that string trimmer? We got 30 minutes to milking. I want to set these pigs up. I want to fix that fence. You see, I have these pigs in a deep bedding, but I want to get them out. I can't get them out until I train them to a fence, and that takes a few days. I know it's not the height of organization. There's some resemblance of it though. I'm looking for the little Premier One gate. Works perfect for training them to an electric net. Is it in this one? It's a little more organized over here. Still no gate in here. No, but I did— I had to break that out soon. And that— the ice maker. The creek's not been cold enough for cold plunges. What'd you find? That— is that gonna work better?
Yeah, a lot better.
Just glasses and, uh, earmuffins. Yeah, does that work? Okay. All right, he's ambitious. You know where the, uh, Premier One gate is? Can you go look in there? I looked, maybe I missed it. Hey, everyone, have you seen the, uh, the Premier One gate? The electric fence gate? It's like a smaller— yeah, it's only this long. Where? The fence stall? Yeah. All right, big brother teaching him. Nice, good job. All right, you gonna help him if he needs it? Yeah. All right, is this the gate, Arun? One of them? I think 3 of them. No, no. What about this? Those are for the sheep. That's for the pigs. There it is. This is the one? Yep. Where'd you find it? Right here in the corner. Okay, well, it's been so long, we probably put it in the corner like this is a nice safe place, and apparently it was. All right, let's get an Energizer for it and put it in the little pigs. Now let's get our fence tester. Hey mama. Hey baby. Hey baby Henry, you being happy for Mom? Looks like it. High five! We got the Energizer. What are you doing?
I'm finding a hide, tanning hide place for hamburgers. Hide.
Nice.
When we do that.
Yes, I need to call them because June's coming up fast and they like notice. Got these little guys some more feed. Don't want them running into this and it not being on. That would defeat the point of the training. This Energizer has been sitting all winter, so Turn it on. Let's see if it even works. Uh, 9.8. Oh well. Uh, probably could hit a little harder than that. We could change out the batteries. Uh, we could also see maybe the quicker possibility is what if it's not grounding good? Let's— because it is kind of dry here in this mulch. Arun had the idea for a longer grounding rod. We could do that. If we discover it's the grounding rod— there you go, that's good. You put a puddle there and that way it'll soak in. I'm gonna go slow so that it goes down the pole and doesn't spread out. This will give us a better ground connection. Yeah, there's a, there's a, there's a hole in this cable. 9.7. So yeah, let's go test the batteries. There's a little tiny crack in the line. You, you have to find those by feeling. You can't really necessarily see it. You can see it now, but I felt it first. Let's get the feet up so they'll have something to do and then come back and it won't bother us. Let's test it. We've unplugged it. Okay, that, that's a full battery, so it may not be a battery. Could have been that grounding out in that line. Yeah, that's full too. So let's fix that line and see if that helps us. Wasn't supposed to go like this, Arun. I was supposed to just get the net, put it up. I should know better than this. Tape. Aha! We got them on feed. Maroon says we've got the wire. They've been here a while, so again, that's true. We fixed our Energizer cord. Let's see what's going on now. We need it strong because it's not gonna, uh How did it get worse? Hear that? Okay, maybe we can see that. You see that? It's grounding out. Yeah, right here. Yep, you can see it. There it is. Nice. Okay, we'll turn it off. We'll pinch it right there. This time let me bring the tape so if there's another one we can fix it. Sometimes it takes just the smallest hole for that electricity to run through. One reason I want to get it so hot is because because it's training and you want them to have a real memorable experience. But the other reason is this is not getting a lot of sun, so we're really just going to run this Energizer off of battery for a few days. I don't hear any clicking. All right, we got— we got us back up to 9.7. I wish it was hitting a little harder because the fence is going to drag it down. But we'll go with what we got. Now the easy part. What the heck? It's good, but it's the worst. No, it's too long. This is not what I was looking for. What is this? Let's go, milking time! The problem there is that gate that we had. I don't even know I had that gate. It's like way too long. I need— and it's not a chicken one. The chicken one is only like 2.5 feet wide, which is perfect because you don't want a big old net in there. You just want a little piece that kind of looks like the net that the pigs are going to be in. By the way, yesterday when we put the chickens in the middle of this paddock, nobody got out. So we put them in the middle of that next paddock and everybody's behaving themselves. So we have to put them up at night and let them out in the morning. So Dan and the rest of the world, I need some plans for automatic, uh, chicken door, uh, opener that'll work on the chickshaw. The problem is in the summer it doesn't get dark till 9:30. Well, we're long time— we're long in bed, we've long wound down and don't really want to go out and close the chickens up. Randolph, whoa, hey, hey, that's going fast now. Holy smokes, there was nothing on here this morning and you've just been here a little bit. You're gonna knock it out, you're gonna knock out this wall today, aren't you? I very well might start working on the door. Jonah, there you are! We were looking for you to put together this— put the milk away.
I'm doing— there's plenty of other kids.
Yeah, all right, I got this eye on it. We'll get everything off this floor and then we can sweep in here and then you can stack it how you want. The sound guys did just call. They're coming to install the speakers, so we're gonna have to work with them and kind of be out of their way. Randolph's crushing it. I got a little bit of time. We got the sound guys here. We got a huge mess. Knock it out. Okay, as fun as that is, I gotta go. You got a phone call. You guys got this. We're testing the sound. It sounds pretty good. We're still missing a subwoofer. This is the bass. It'll go over there. We won't have it in time for the weekend, but we have, we have sound. How's it going in here? Bad, he says. Boy, we're almost done. This has been quite the jazz. Boom! We did it. Everybody did it. Thank you very much. I noticed the screen was still super light, so this is going to really help. Having a door on this, really closing this in, getting it dark in there. Randolph's done for the day. Jonah's been setting this up over here. He was so proud. I brought Henry, but Henry needed to go back, so we took him back. But Jonah set this up nice. We got our sound in. He set up a table here. We got a carpet down. It looks nice in here. This is good. Look, he set up a— he set these tables up as a dining table. The people barn is coming along. All those boxes that were in there, you probably— well, they were these chairs. Just so you know. But the people barn's coming along. We're going over the vlog. You guys got to see this. Really? Yeah, there's two people. There's two people on that. How you doing it? The monsters? Okay, let's see you walk. Let's see you walk.
