This Is What Happens When It Snows On the Farm

A family works through morning chores on their snowy farm: feeding sheep, moving calves, milking. Between tasks, the kids build with Legos and talk about a polar plunge while the parents plan an upcoming homestead design weekend with farmer Joel Salatin.

Get in, Lily. I got y'all snacks. They're on the counter. Do you need me to wait on you? You just want to catch up? Oh good, you got yourself dressed. What about your sweater and your coat? It's gonna snow today. It's supposed to snow today. Let's just find your coat. Do you know where you left it? You had it on yesterday. Come on, help me find it. I found your coat. What about your sweater? Just looked down the hallway and saw nothing.
Not even jackets.
I got you a jacket. Is that blue one too big for you?
What?
Can you wear that blue one?
This one?
Yeah.
No.
What about socks?
Nope.
I see you got your socks. Thank you. Can we make that blue sweater work? How you feeling this morning? Ready to turn some compost? Yeah, hopefully if we have time before the Polar Plunge, we can turn that compost pile. You should try that blue jacket, huh?
Papa, can you go get me a little bit of water?
Mhm.
I'll try it. Okay, Papa?
Mhm. Here, can you just wear that blue one until we find yours on the farm somewhere?
This one?
Yeah. You want to even skip this? You might not even need this. You just want to wear your big coat?
Okay.
Okay, there's no shoes out here, bro. You got a lead? You've got a lead on the shoes? They're in here. Are you not going?
Nope.
Wait, why not?
What?
I just waited on you for 10 minutes. Hey, is it because we couldn't find your shoes? If I find your shoes, will you go? Okay, let me look downstairs when I take the milk stuff down. This is where I would suspect, but this hasn't been as popular as it should be. They've already lost interest in the hay fort. There's one, there's two. Look what I found, Mr. Brown. There are your shoes. Let's go. I'm gonna call you on your bluff. Let's go. I got your shoes. You coming?
Yes. I'm gonna come and catch up to you.
You'll catch up to me?
Yeah.
Okay. Hey, maybe I should turn off the heat.
No, no.
So you'll come. So you'll get off that vent, huh? Should I turn it off?
No.
See ya, buddy. I'll miss ya. The boys are up and at 'em this early morning. They're already done all the chores and heading to the cow. They did want me to feed the— or move the luchadors. Why do you think they're so excited? Why? When a child gets up without your prompting, they're excited. It means they're looking forward to something. I'm thinking it's that Lego Millennium Falcon. They didn't finish it yesterday. I bet they want to finish it today.
Good morning.
I'm not feeding you guys too much hay. Looks like I'm feeding you too much hay. Where's my rope? My rope's still on the side, and that's from when I pulled it this way the other day. I guess the kids like to push this thing as opposed to pull it.
I think Donald is blind.
You think what?
Donald's blind.
How do you think Donald's blind?
Because he keeps on doing this to the ground and Penguin everywhere, and then he got on Penguin thinking he was the waterer.
Really?
Mm-hmm.
Can you maybe get Penguin some food while you got her out?
Yes, I have a feeder. I had the— I was— I had the stoop up there, but the fence was leaning down, so he went to fix the fence, and then Donald started doing that.
You're cute holding that chicken.
I'll show you something.
Okay, great.
TikTok. All right, let's see it.
It's up here.
Oh my, that is pretty amazing. You're a rough and tumble kid, aren't you? How's it going down here? Good. Cowboys, cowgirls, good morning, Jonah.
Good morning.
What was the hurry to do the chores this morning?
I want to go buy my own little cabin.
I thought so, I thought so. Okay, well, I'll let you guys— you did?
I don't know, would you woke me up? We would have gone and built something. No, you were awake.
Oh, all right. Well, I'll let you guys go while I milk. Just come when I come up and switch them out while I process the milk. You made some improvements while I was gone. You didn't just keep up the farm, You made improvements. You hang this here, it was hanging over there, now it's more convenient over here. They hung buckets so that these guys can have their little alfalfa treats and it's a little more organized. And aren't you drooling, huh, Mustang? All right, well, it was supposed to start raining at 7. It's like 7:30 now. This stuff is powdered for some reason. Must have been the bottom of his barrel, George's barrel. But it's actually a good thing because it takes them longer to eat it. Mom's gonna We got to go to our Azure Standard pickup today. Hopefully the snow doesn't prevent that. It's in the afternoon. I might need to hurry just to edit and go with her. So Brianna came down. This is when I would take the milk up, but Brianna's going to take the milk up. This is when I would call the boys to come switch, but We'll just let them keep playing. I'm proud of those guys. Boy, that was a win. Lego as a bonus.
Let's go.
There's nothing in there but clean.
Come on.
All right, we're We're almost done there. I gotta show you what Lily's up to.
The chickens are picking on him. We made this.
Okay.
And when we want to play with him, we'll just put this up. And then we're gonna put it in the yard. He helps a lot in the yard to play with the grass.
Okay. Alright. Good deal. So you'll come out and play with her?
Yeah.
And then you'll—
Hey!
Good morning!
We'll set her up when we don't want to play with her for the hawks won't get her.
Okay, you'll put her in that when you don't want to play with her?
Yeah.
Just during the day and at night you'll put her back in the fence, right? Right now you got her some— you got her some feed and you got her some water.
Yeah, she dumped out the water though.
Okay, you taking them up? All right, I'm gonna go, uh, I'm gonna pick you guys up on my way up. We'll go the access road.
Where's Josiah?
I'll let him go build it.
Now wait, now wait, isn't the fun in building it?
I already built all my packages.
What's the hurry?
We want to play with it.
I think most of the fun is in the building. They won't realize that. Look at this, buds. Buds on the brambles, guys. It's happening. Snow is coming, but spring is in the air. Being real careful because I set this camera down, got back in Sally, and that smell of skunk. Holy smokes! You see snow?
All right.
Oh, oh, it is, it is snowing! It's snowing! We're gonna not do our workout this morning because I need to edit. We will plunge, but I need to edit so I can go with Mom to Azure. Driving, I'm more experience driving in the snow. Oh my gosh, dang, I'm afraid that that skunk made me jump. This twig. Okay, we're making a movie. He wants to go, it stinks. And I tell him, you know, we're not out here just feeding the animals, we're making a movie about feeding the That's, that's how much we love you guys.
Okay, sit up.
Here we go. They're ready to get out of here, aren't they? Okay, everybody sit down. We're about to go down. Oh, we gotta clear this. I thought you cleared this line. Hey, you guys gotta spread it out a little further. It's got to be cow length apart. Good job, Grace. She gas, come on, she gas. That view though. Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep.
You want to see them?
Want to see the people? Thanks, my man, for a little nest. Okay, that's very kind of you, my man. These sheep are hardy as all get out. They don't have a shelter where they came from in Missouri. Craig Judy raised the excellent hardy sheep. This is more than enough, bro. You forgot to turn the fence on last night.
I turned it off to get the calves out. Oh, letting it charge.
Look at you, look at you, my man. Good deal.
Trying to accuse me of not taking the fins on.
All right, all right, okay, I'm sorry, I confess. A false— no, we'll leave it off because it's so cloudy. Want to let the batteries get charged. Hey, who's polar plunging with me this morning?
I'm doing my polar plunge right now.
All right, I mean, I could be acclimating. This is fun when it's like this.
I know.
The more colder and miserable, the more fun it is. Let's see if the ladies have the same idea. Hey ladies.
Hey.
Isn't it more fun to polar plunge in the snow?
It is. No.
I mean, it makes me feel like I'm kind of amazing.
But mentally it's a lot harder.
Oh wow.
Quick, before somebody comes down the road and sees us crazy people. They actually have a name for this. Cryotherapy? Xenotherapy? What's the real name for what we're doing here?
Thermogenesis?
No, cryotherapy, something like that. Is it cryotherapy?
Yeah, but there's also another one, thermogenesis.
Yeah, that's what we're doing. The water's warm. Every day. It's a struggle, isn't it?
Lately I've been like, I don't want— why? I don't even want to do this anymore, but I'm so glad I did. I'm dying.
No.
Legos are a hot item now. Snow coming down. It's not freezing though, so it's definitely not going to stick yet. Maybe it's going to get colder. How's it going in here?
Good.
Look.
Oh cool, look at the inside. It's got all the features. It's got the bed, the table, the kitchen. Oh, it's even got the game. Can y'all see the snow now? It's hard for people— oh yeah, you can start kind of seeing it. Definitely not sticking though, guys.
I don't think it's warm enough to stick.
Is it gonna stick like later?
I don't know.
Where's my phone?
I can tell you.
Nice breakfast of our eggs and yogurt and broth.
Why?
He likes to sit on your lap. It finally started sticking at the end of the day.
Yeah, it's possible. It's possible to get colder.
Yeah, I think it was supposed to get colder, but they canceled schools. Did they?
Yeah.
Let's go back at it. Got about, what, 2 hours till we leave? I think I can get done editing in 2 hours, Becky. Okay. Did you read it?
No, I couldn't.
Oh, okay. I'm, uh, trying to get Joel Salatin to come to the farm.
Yes.
No, I'm not trying. Like, he's already agreed. Joel Salatin's coming to the park. So we've already made the deal. I'm just sending off the letter, send him off the check. What?
You spelled—
who? What'd I spell wrong?
His wife's name.
Oh boy, don't want to do that.
Although my name often gets misspelled.
How do you spell it, for the record?
I don't get my panties in a wad. I don't care.
Well, how do you spell it?
My name?
Well, I know how to spell it, but tell the people so there's no more confusion.
R-E-B-E-K-A-H. You're thinking, you know how to spell it, guys.
Yeah, sometimes I'm asking questions not for me but for you guys. Tell you more about it. We're gonna get Joel Salatin here on the farm. We're gonna do a homestead design weekend. That, that's going to be content that's going up into our member area. We're launching that soonish, like month-ish, probably a little less than a month. So stay tuned. There will be opportunity to come to like an intimate, quaint, hands-on with he and I here on this farm, a homestead consult that you guys will be witness, interview, and a lecture from him with Q&A. So a lot of content coming in for the member from Joel Salatin himself. That's how much I love you guys. Oh, and of course we'll document much of it for the vlog. Okay, okay, you got it. Fix it.
Yes.
No más erros. Can you write that check for me? Okay, 12:30 check-in. We're gonna leave in 1 hour. I've got word from Asheville it's starting to stick. The boys are done. Look at— check it out.
Would you—
you made— you made a video? You made your video on it?
Cool.
I like it.
Good job, guys.
Proud of you. Now you're gonna have fun with it. We had an idea. What if you guys play with this for a few days, and when it starts getting, you know, a little boring, or other kids start wanting to play with it, maybe we take it apart. Can we put it back in its box? Yeah, with the instructions. And you take a break. In a couple of weeks you build it again when you're bored. Okay. You like that idea?
Yeah. Yeah, I guess.
I didn't know how you would take it. You're not so sure. You sure?
I don't know.
Well, enjoy it for a few days. We'll see how you feel. Well, it's time to go, but Rebecca, you decided that I don't need to go. Yeah, you feel confident?
It'll be fine.
Yeah, it's not even freezing, so there's no way the roads are gonna be slippery.
Yeah.
Okay, Lorraine said it was sticking up at their place. All right, so, but I think that they may be higher than we are.
Okay, so Rebecca forgot her book. All right, honey, be safe. What book is it?
Redeeming Love.
How many times you read that book?
I've read it 5 or 6 times. It's so good.
See you in a few days.
I know.
3 o'clock. I've been editing, still going. Probably got another hour. It's a good thing I didn't go because look who's back. Look at all this snow. How are the roads, huh?
Got lots of boxes.
Oh my, that's your standard pickup.
Lots of peanut butter and apple cider vinegar. Yes, let's do a bucket of apples.
Okay, let's see how much we can carry. Should I risk it? Jars.
Should I do it?
I hope I don't regret this. I got this.
Do you want to drag down and, um, put the bucket down and leave the car down there? All right, no, I'm gonna change.
Makes sense. Well, I'm not done editing.
Let's go up 4.
Just skip like little Josiah. Guess I'm in a good mood. That snow will do it to you. Chores are going to be fun in it this afternoon though. Give me one more hour to edit my video. For you, that'll be just in the very next clip. It is time. It's kind of, kind of going to be exciting to go out and work in this. So beautiful. There's you some rock squash. Oh, they're not too happy. That's not skin milk.
Green.
What you doing?
Got the big guys fed. I'm actually looking for Hamburger. There's Moose, there's every— where's Hamburger? We have to get the calves into here with the sheep so Mama's milk builds up overnight. We can harvest it in the morning. Fence is ready for the calves, but I don't see any Hamburger. I saw Phyllis down in here. Maybe he's in here in this patch. Yep, he's in this dry patch. Oh, this is kind of a little shelter, isn't it, buddy? You're no dummy. Come on, you're no dummy. I found him, Rebecca! Do you see my plan? We're gonna run them in down to the corner there. This could be slippery.
Come on. Hey, hey, no, don't go that way.
You come that way, Becky. Normally the sheep snare's a little bit closer. Go wider, Rebecca. He's coming this— she's coming— he's coming this way. There you go. There you guys go. Yeah, go wide, Becky. Don't slip though, don't slip. Having them in the lane is great actually, because then you can walk down the lane and they'll see it once they get to the end of the lane. Look at him shaking off his feet. I'm afraid they won't be able to I can see the opening. Keep coming, Becky, keep coming. They're almost there. Yay, look at that! Holy smokes, we didn't fall first try.
Woo!
I'm so happy about that. That could have gone really bad. Hopefully, Rebecca, we won't slide going up this.
We're 4-wheel drive.
Oh, we're going to get a no problem. What?
Did that hit you?
No, it didn't.
Okay, but I'm sure it didn't.

If I had to start my Homestead all over again, it could only pick one animal…
