Treating Skin Infection Naturally? I was Skeptic

This content was created by Victor Justin Rhodes. This content was uploaded by Victor Justin Rhodes. This is a YouTube video titled "Treating Skin Infection Naturally? I was Skeptic" (posted 2019-07-21). The excerpt is a casual home/farm vlog-style transcript in English featuring Justin and Rebecca (with children and other family members/participants identified as Speaker C, Speaker D, Aunt Ann/Grandma) as they care for Justin's foot infection using natural/home remedies (Epsom salt soaks, manuka honey, charcoal poultice, a ginger/cayenne/honey tea, homeopathy) while discussing avoiding antibiotics when possible. The clip also covers everyday farm and home activities—milking cows, doing chores, painting kitchen drawers/doors, garden observations—and includes commentary about Rebecca's interest in natural medicine and the couple’s approach to combining natural and conventional care. The tone is informal and diaristic; the speakers explicitly note this is not medical advice.

Rebecca just called me down here. She's got a visitor.
Scared me. Did you hear me scream?
Yeah. Now what we want to do is get him out of here but not let him go up into the rafters. So let me get a tool. I didn't hear you scream, but I heard you calling for me.
No, I was walking.
He's going up. Dang it.
Shoot, where'd he go? Oh, there he is! Oh dang it, I don't think he can get in the rafters, can he?
It's amazing how much better that feels after the Epsom salt bath pack.
Good, that makes me feel very happy.
That's crazy, that's encouraging, cuz last It's better than last night. It's not as red. It's not as painful.
Yeah.
I really know that you love me.
There's a little bit of—
'Cause she's been all up in my foot.
There's a little bit of redness right there, but we're just gonna keep, keep treating it.
You even clipped my toenails. That's love.
Wow.
You love much more than I could find. You saved my life. You come through every single time. I see the light.
I see the light.
That's our list of natural remedies.
This is his, this is his schedule for today because we're taking this very seriously.
Okay.
Making sure that it doesn't get worse. Making sure that it actually gets better.
Yeah. And trying to avoid antibiotics.
Yeah, I'm not against antibiotics. I just want to, if we can, if we can heal without them, then Yeah, I will do it. If it gets infected, if it gets serious, we're taking antibiotics. Yeah, I'm not— we're not doctors.
We're not done. We're not against that.
No, this is not medical advice.
This is our job.
That's just where we're coming from and why we've chosen to treat Justin's foot without antibiotics. Yeah, um, at first to see if we can kick it, and it seems like it's working.
The boys want so bad to do these all the chores for me. They've done them all so far. They're such good boys, such good boys. So fortunate. But I am gonna help them a little bit. I'm gonna wash Flossie. And Anne's coming, she can help them milk. But I'll just— it's good for me to kind of check in with things. I can't stop, I guess. All right, I got that cleaned and ready to go. Everything's looking good.
Check your hair. Ah, that's filming. I know, but he Bookers? Uh, I think I'm good now.
Okay, let's go. Okay.
I don't think that was right. Okay, Papa did not make us do these chores. It's our decision. He pays us good. I make $135 a week. How much do you make? Uh, $20. He makes $20. He might get a raise for doing this. He did not make us do this. It was our decision. We were telling him, we're gonna do the chores. You can just sit back and relax, 'cause he hurt his foot. He's coming to see us do the chores. So I got the pig bucket. There's so little scraps. We don't have any skim because we didn't cream separate, so I don't know if I'm gonna use grain or not. So I think I'm going to put 2 pounds of grain, one for each, so they can eat. What'd you do, break out the net bucket? Did you do the sea monsters? Yeah. Did you give them water? Yeah. Did you not move their thing? Yeah. Okay, did you feed them? Okay, did you feed the ICs? Yeah. Let them out? Yeah. Make sure they have water? Yeah.
What actually happened was I thought I hurt it from dropping something on it. I thought it was like a fracture. But actually it was a— there was actually a sore between my toes that opened and I guess got infected. Just felt like a— lesson learned, should have looked. Looked at it closer a long time ago. Manuka honey. Prop my foot up while I edit.
Are you slobber?
That's what you are. Aunt Ann and Grandma are here to milk. It's their second time. We're going to milk for Papa also as we did the chores. Okay, you excited to milk?
Uh, yeah, I think I can do a better job now.
Okay, and you both, are you gonna be there with me?
Yes. Grandma gonna do it?
Oh yeah, we're a team, didn't you know?
Uh, I don't think so. I don't think so.
We're gonna have a good time. I know.
Did you feed the cow? Did you give the cow some, um, let's see, we put this up here. Did you, um, did you wipe it off yet? Okay, good. Where did you feed the cow already?
I don't know if he said it or not. You should ask them.
Boy, I can't not get it out. I can't get it out. See, my, my two fingers don't squeeze anymore. My bottom one and that one. Okay, right, go ahead. See, my finger, these two fingers, I can't do it. I tried to get—
okay, there we go.
When you get older, you, you are—
you, here, you do it.
It is sharp. It is shocking how much stuff you can't do. I'll go ahead. I'm going to give the cow a little something. So do you think you're using this muscle or this muscle?
Do it and see. Good job.
Grandma had a hard time. She can hardly milk.
She what?
She can hardly milk because she has some spots. Yeah.
All right, so let me try it. All right, so you just want to go and angle it. You sure you don't want to dump?
I'll dump.
Yeah, let's dump them in.
All right, here we go.
Okay, so would you hold the pail with your one hand?
I can do that because I only— I'm only coordinated to do one.
You want to try?
Come on, Brucey, you can do it. You ever done this, Brucey?
A long, long time ago.
Oh, when you were a young man or a boy.
Okay, so—
okay, you must have it.
Let's see what you do. Whoops, we gotta—
up.
I'll move it.
Yeah, you don't have to pull.
Oh.
Oh, you just gotta— you gotta go higher. This is what I learned, the tricks right there.
Hey, look at this one. This one's just leaning. This one's just coming right out. You see it? Why did y'all, uh, do this? Oh, hey, quit getting it on me. That's what my grandpa used to do to me.
Yeah, shoot it 10 feet at you.
Hey, there you go.
Boy, she is full. Whoa. Hey, what is— oh, supplies, uh, that's causing it.
Oh, we did all the chores and brought the cow in.
Oh, the cow's in?
Yeah.
Did you check the water in Bear and Stud Muffin?
No, but I checked it yesterday.
It was overflowing.
I know, but I went to get the cat in.
But that water for some reason is like leaking or something, so you got to make sure it's full and they'll drink a lot. Okay, so you had to go for it. The Kiel's hidden to hide your stains.
Yeah, I probably could have kept going, but I chose not to.
You didn't want to do 8 primers with the natural stuff?
It would have eventually covered it, but I just didn't want to do that.
Randolph said this was the water-based, so he didn't think it was this— it's still kind of toxic, potentially toxic as the other stuff. Yeah, good. Was it working? That's the question.
It's, it's not. I'm having to do a couple coats with it too, so—
oh my gosh. Okay, you're gonna be painting all day? Judging by your clothes, I'm thinking so.
I hope so. Yesterday I wore these most of the day and I didn't paint at all. Just kind of a crazy day yesterday.
Rebecca, look at this. This is crazy. I have to admit, I'm skeptical of this stuff. Skeptical of everything, but this is like crazy. It's working. Yes. Oh my gosh, if it keeps this up, I'm not gonna have to do the headlines. All right, now this is not fun. This is like, I gotta sit down. This is like—
it's supposed to be 3 to 4 ounces of fresh ginger juice. I only put— I put 3 in last night and I only put 2 in today. And then an 8— I didn't even put all the cayenne pepper, so it calls for an 8th of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Honey, which I put extra honey in it, manuka honey. Hot water, or I do warm water so that he can drink it and it doesn't kill all the honey stuff and then honey properties. And then lime, a quarter of a lime. This was just an addition. This is just an immune boosting, um, tea for him to drink. I'm having him drink it 3 times a day. It says 2 to 6. I felt like 6 might be pushing it. So he's gonna get 3.
Look, it gives me chill bumps. I want to sweat. Throat and lips are burning. Last night I was like, are you sure this isn't gonna hurt me? Yes folks, that's a landline. We do live in the country. No cell phone reception.
It's your dad.
Yes sir. I'm on the mend. Okay, good to see you. You take care. Be easy on him. Yes sir. I won't. Okay, it's the worst. But hey, my attitude's a little different from last night because something's working.
Oh, like you, like, right?
Like, look, my foot is down and it's not like killing me.
Kids have gone with Grandma. Justin is in the back editing. He's got his foot propped up. He's got his herbal medicine that he's gonna take. I got it all ready for him, and I am going to go paint. I didn't get any painting done yesterday even though I wore paint clothes all day, so I'm hoping to get— uh-oh, where did I set that? Oh, I set it in here. So I'm hoping to get a lot of painting done today, especially while my mom and dad and my aunt have the kids. I've gotten some doors done. I'm just rolling them out. I'm using the Eko's primer, wood blocking primer. And then I was going to go and spot treat with the KILZ, and I'm going to do another coat of the ECO's primer. And then I need to get on the drawers, which are going to be more difficult because they have the drawers still attached to them. Because of the way that they're made, I can't undo it. But while I do this, I thought I would talk about how I got into natural medicine. Probably some of you have that question, especially since we treat naturally as opposed to using conventional medicine. I got into natural medicine, I think, just because like with having Hashimoto's, I, you know, I went to the doctor, I went to the primary doctor, I went to the endocrinologist, and they just said Okay, here is your medicine. They spent 15 minutes with me. They didn't really explain things, and I was just like, you know, I guess just left with a lot of questions and just thought there has to be a better way. I was, you know, just searching and kind of asking and reading books. You know, I was changing our food, like I was I was learning more about the food system and what was actually in our foods. So, you know, I mean, it's just, I think it's just kind of a natural progression. We're not anti-Western medicine. We are more just like Western medicine has its place. Last year when I had to have surgery, I was thankful for Western medicine. It's just more if we can treat it naturally, then we will. You know, just looking at how we can, especially 'cause like of my history of having so many antibiotics and stuff, and just knowing that a lot of my problems actually come from the antibiotic usage of, of as when I was a child. I use several different things. I like homeopathy, I like herbs, I like essential oils. I kind of use a blend of all three of those. And, and then of course, obviously food, you know, being your number one medicine. You know, I said to Justin last night, I wonder if one of the reasons that this went this way is because we've been not prioritizing sleep and self-care and all these things. And so, you know, our bodies are, while we're feeding them nutritious food still, it's not running on all, all cylinders, I would say. You know, I mean, we've both been just working really hard to get the kitchen done, and then just, you know, farming can be kind of crazy sometimes. So I just encourage you to just read. I'm not saying like, you know, don't go to the doctor, don't use antibiotics ever, but if we can avoid antibiotic use, it's gonna be better because it does create superbugs. There's a lot of good information out there and I'm not saying, you know, throw all conventional medicine out the window. I'm just saying, like, you can use them both in, um, together. You don't have to choose one or the other. It doesn't have to be, oh, I, you know, I have to only use natural medicine, or I only have to use conventional medicine. You can use both of them, and I feel like that's what we do, um, and we try. You know, to do that. So, I hope that helps.
Alarm's going off. It says Epsom salt and homeopathy, but I don't know where the homeopathy is. Look at you! Is this your happy place? Is this your must gotta do it place?
My gotta do place. This is my—
Well, it seems kind of peaceful down here.
This is my listen to a podcast.
Yeah, work. What podcast you listening to?
Listen to Wise Traditions. Oh, podcast, uh, with Sinead Price.
Okay, which episode?
It's on thyroid. It's actually really good.
Okay, good.
And I'm learning a lot.
The list says homeopathy and Epsom salt.
Oh, it's time for that.
So what homeopathy do I get? Um, and How much scoops do I put in a foot if I just do my feet in Epsom salt?
Do 2 scoops and then put a couple drops of the tea tree oil in the salt.
I do got to show you guys this though. I'm seeing this as the backdrop to the fall garden. Remember how we went in this spring, harvested from it, and then we cultivated and then we sowed cover crop? I want you guys to see this. Is that not the most beautiful sight? Look at how the COVID crops have come up. So beautiful. Look, and there's still produce in here, guys. Check out these beautiful flowers. Look, look at this yellow. This is the COVID crop coming up. Look at the butterfly and the life it is attracting. Look at the white flowers, the purple, the clover. Look, there's a ladybug and grasshoppers and bees and squash is growing. This is not a jungle garden, this is like a botanical garden. This is absolutely beautiful. I love how this has turned out. I think what made the big difference was last night Rebecca did a charcoal poultice on it. That really pulled out the infection. I mean, we We had a lot of pus this morning. Y'all wanna hear that? At least I don't, at least I'm not gonna show you, right?
So I got all of the drawers taped up and painted. I did the fronts of these and way back there, there's a couple back there that I've done. And I am now headed upstairs to put on the color. And that is the color that I've chosen, and I'm pretty excited about it. So I haven't— this is the first of the color that's going on. Taking a break from painting to give Justin his tea. The camera died right when he was gonna drink it, so he has to do it again now for the camera.
I gotta do it anyway, camera or no camera, but I did learn this trick that just suck down a lot of it.
It helps.
Oh my gosh. It makes me feel better.
That's right.
We currently have a charcoal poultice on the, on the area. You can see it better there.
You think the swelling has gone down? The color definitely has.
Oh yeah, it looks—
I can actually step on it.
It did not look swollen at all, um, when I saw it at lunch. We're winning.
Yay!
In the house. Oh y'all, like, this is— it's like become the junk room, and then there's just junk everywhere. I just feel like there's just junk everywhere. Like, there's piles of stuff. I have to go back downstairs. I forgot something that I need, which is— my mom reminded me that in between the— what's it called? The stove. There is— I was just gonna leave raw wood there, but that's gonna be a big fat nope. Because stuff falls down. So let's see the black snake. He's still in hiding, I believe. Maybe there's a mouse he's eaten. But look, these are drying nicely. We've got the doors, the cabinet, the things. Obviously that's gonna need some serious stain blocking on some of them. My plan will be to KILZ the areas that have serious stain blocking needs and then to, um, put the wood primer, the ECO's wood primer over it. So, all right, Justin.
Well, we finally get to watch our family movie night. Toy Story 2. Missed it yesterday. Foot's feeling a lot better. I do have to take this one more time.
Today. Today. Because you get to have some tomorrow too.
Oh boy. Are you socking it to me tomorrow like you did today?
Yeah.
