Truck Camping, Alone with my Son

In this vlog segment, the family prepares for a multi‑day truck camping trip. The father (Speaker A) leads a lively packing session, checking off items such as bottled sparkling water, supplements, camera gear, Nalgene bottles, food supplies (bacon, sausage, hot dogs, mac & cheese, s'mores ingredients), and camping essentials. The dialogue reveals each family member’s role—Rebecca handling band‑aids and bug‑bite remedies, Lily joking about mentors, and the boys (Josiah, Henry, Randolph) helping with trash and gear. A recurring theme is a reflective conversation about mentorship and masculinity, where the father explains that a man is a servant and giver, contrasting boys as takers, and discusses who counts as a mentor. The family also outlines planned outdoor activities: mountain biking, waterfall rock climbing, a helicopter tour of Pisco, a cold‑water plunge, and a rope swing. They describe setting up camp under the stars, cooking meals (mac & cheese, bacon, chicken stir‑fry, s'mores), and the simple pleasures of the wilderness. The tone is informal, humorous, and affectionate, emphasizing bonding, responsibility, and the excitement of a coming‑of‑age adventure.

It's the next day and the workers are back. Gonna work on the decking today. Game changer for our time when Whole Foods started delivering out here. You ready? You packed? Still feel like we got a lot to do. This has helped me though. Writing down a list. Something to check off. I know cameras is on there somewhere. So I'm going through it all. You gonna help put that away? Did you find something you want? Banana! Woo! Cantaloupe. Can you say cantaloupe?
Don't drop it.
Oh, hey, you got me sparkling water. Bottled sparkling water is an easy way to have sparkling water while camping. Like, I don't want to have to haul my SodaStream into the woods. We got our supplements, we got a book, we got camera gear, goodie bag, snacks, water, training gear, more water. Can you guys help me to take it to the car? It would greatly encouraged me.
Me, I can't.
You're gonna help? Yeah, maybe we should give you a smaller glass bottle, especially over this rock. Maybe not a glass walkway like this. Okay, thank you. Henry, come on, getting there. We are looking for a Nalgene bottle that was supposedly delivered and we need for our camping trip, but we can't find it. What are we gonna do with you, Mr. Poopy Pants? Put your poop right on my neck. What are you most looking forward to about this trip? Mountain biking. Oh, you're getting excited about mountain Yeah, I think that would be my favorite too. We had to turn back for Henry. You know, he's got FOMO. Funny thing is we're just getting ice packs. We would already been back by now. Boys crave adventure, and that doesn't end when they become men, and that's okay. That's definitely one of the underlying qualities of this coming-of-age trip. It's to feed that excitement, that boy, that man energy. Come on, Henry. That's all it was. The other goal— reach out and grab it. Trust me, trust me. The other goal would be to bond and to talk. You and I, we're gonna chat it up, aren't we? You haven't noticed, Josiah's kind of quiet. I'm kind of quiet when the camera's not going. I'm the introverted one. Rebecca's the extroverted one. Oh, Randolph gets to compact the trash. Randolph's been wanting to drive this Mini-X. Pressure's on now. We got the camera out. This dumpster is almost full, and as soon as they can come is tomorrow, and it's not going to be soon enough. The boys make this look easy, but it's hard. It's hard. Hey, have you packed my clothes?
Nope, not yet. I'm almost done. I just— I was waiting for some stuff out there.
Let's finish loading it, and then I can make lunch and we'll be off. Put a pack of our bacon. Get the pack of sausage. The essentials. You know, I also want him to know that you can— he can talk to me about anything, anytime. Oh, he's bringing the hot dogs. I think we need a whole 2 packs. Mom said to bring 2. All right. And lastly, probably most importantly, I want him to know that to be a man is to be a servant. Mr. My Mentor, Mr.
Uh-Oh, where's the, um, how many Mentos do you have? What, 20 Mentos?
How many mentors do you have? Uh, quite a few, I would say. 2 or 3. How many you got? Uh, none. Well, you got Mom.
Um, is that counting as a mentor?
Yeah, you ask her for advice.
But you ask a lot of people for advice.
Yeah, that's true. You can ask anybody for advice. That's true.
Then Elise would be my mentor because I asked her some questions.
Yeah.
But that wouldn't be a real mentor.
Yeah.
Isn't a mentor someone older than you?
All right, you got me. I give up. I guess it doesn't have to be. The difference between a man and a boy is that boys are takers and men are givers. And it's not like— I mean, little boys can have moments of manhood and men can have moments of boyhood, and it's not even that bad of a thing if it's unbalanced. Yeah, yeah, definitely gonna be unbalanced. That's one way to tell when you've become a man is when you start giving than I'm gonna take.
Does a lady always have to give?
No. I mean, it's good that she gives too. There's nothing wrong with that. You'll come to a point where you give more than you take as well. But I guess the man has to be extra keen to that. But it's not like the woman doesn't serve. You serve all the time.
You serve Henry boobies.
Not anymore. How's that going? It's fine. It's sad.
Makes me sad.
It's terrible. He's terribly whiny for you, especially at night.
He's been eating a lot of ice cream.
You know what? I should try to start being instilling to you Because what Mr. Meeks told the boys to look for in a woman was someone who was thankful. And grateful and positive.
Here is some medicines.
Okay, thanks.
Band-Aids, bug bite stuff. If you have sore muscles, if you have histamine, like, uh, then some homeopathy in there. Then like, if you're not feeling well, if you get like diarrhea.
Do you want to see a cooler reveal? Yes! Yes! Okay, all right. Homegrown bacon, bottom ham, American cheese. You stop picking at our stuff. String cheese, chicken from our farm already diced, ready to go. Pre-made food thanks to the beautiful one. Zucchini's ready to fry. Hamburger Helper, also known as mac and cheese with a lot of meat. Some white rice, that'll be a chicken stir-fry. You're the hero behind the scenes, even planned our itinerary. I planned the whole thing. Waterfall rock climbing. Mountain biking and helicopter tour of Pisco. How did you come to choose those activities? Just wanted to join. Hey, you found the Nalgene! Who knew Nalgene made stainless steel? That's great.
Can I see?
Does it still have its wide mouth? It's whitish, not as white as the plastic, but whiter than a Klean Kanteen. That's good. They put our delivery in the back of Sally.
Yes, I was just looking everywhere.
Are you hunting honey? Her 5-gallon bucket of honey.
I know, we're gonna need— I'm gonna have to find something local.
We go through that.
We do. It takes us about 5 months.
What you making, Lily?
Ice cream and cookies.
It's gonna be hard to carry this cooler with you like that.
And me.
Brother has to help, okay? There we go. Hey, it was nice that we had organized our camp stuff. I bet it was. Just grabbed a tote and now you're kind of just going through a checklist.
You got bowls and plates and spoons and forks. Alrighty, bye guys.
Bye. Where's Josiah? He's in the house cleaning up, being a man, doing the right thing. Okay, you want me to throw him some shoes? Wear your shoes, Mr. Brand. Bye, Josiah. Bye. I know it's backwards, they're leaving before us and we just didn't get out. So hey, we're gonna be a man and do the right thing, aren't we? We're gonna pick up this house for him. Yeah, bring that. What is it?
They're clothes.
Okay, don't forget. Are you bringing your math? Yeah, on a camping trip, huh? Do it. All right. Oh, I think we're being chivalrous leaving this house very nice. We'll even take the glasses for— just walk right into the frame. Really good. Glad you feel comfortable enough to do that. We're getting the glasses over. We gotta pack that, but I think we're leaving it nice. I mean, leave a surprise for them. Which font do you like? Don't give us none of that fancy expensive of stuff. Let's just say we love you, right? How's that for a surprise for them? Oh, Lily Pad! Oh, that's not our brownies. Where are our brownies? And off we're just hitting the road. Yes sir! What'd you do to our porch? Just tore it all to pieces. They're fast, aren't they? Did they clean it up or you clean it up? Oh, they cleaned it up. Wow, they did good. Look at this. Don't walk out that door. Josiah, we are on the road. Pillows. We forgot pillows. Well, what do you think? The pad? Nice being in the woods. Huge tree, beefy table. This home for the next few days. All we got to do then is just— this is going to be our pantry. I can't think of a better just place to sleep than right here under the stars. I'm convinced. Are you convinced? Yeah. He said let's set up the Timbuktu. I said why do we need the Timbuktu? Too easy. Yeah. Okay, so most of this is probably gonna need to stay. Ready? Yeah. A little cold plunge here. This ain't gonna be the water at home either. It's gonna be cold. It's gonna come right off the mountain. This is when I like to swim, when it's cold, nobody else is in there. Pretty. All right, we gotta do it for at least 3 minutes. It's real deeper. Oh look, there's a rope swing. Gotta get back in. If you guys ever want to slow time down, jump in the cold water. It's only been a minute, 37 seconds. Feels like it's been 10. You wanna go first? Sure. That was so much fun. It's so refreshing. Are you refreshed? Yeah. Now we got to do that first thing in the morning, huh? It is supper time in our humble cooking— in our humble kitchen. Tonight's meal for the Burn It Up Cooking Show is— not too terribly exciting of a process because the beautiful one has already made it for us. Mac and cheese with lots of meat. You think we can eat all that? We're not even gonna fill the table, are we? What? Couple of bachelors. What you reading? Alrighty, boys. I think I'll read my Elephant Whisperer. It's time for some of Mom's homemade marshmallow s'mores. You started without me. Look at that, our evening view. Josiah, have you ever slept outside? Yeah, in a tent. Nothing but no covering like that. You gotta have a treehouse. Oh, you did? Yeah, but that was built with a roof. Well, I'm telling you, you're gonna have a really good night's sleep out in the open like this. Okay. He's like, okay, whatever you say. All right, good night, buddy. Good night.
