A farm morning with sheep health checks, hoof trimming, and maggot removal, plus garden harvests of beets and cucumbers. They ferment cabbage for probiotics, use comfrey as living mulch around fruit trees, and assemble a cattle-panel corral with zip ties while the milking crew works.

Come on, sleepies. Come on. Can't do it without you.
Good morning. Look at my beautiful jars of tomato sauce. Is that not amazing? I am thrilled. I did have a couple jars or lids that did that, and that was because I accidentally overtightened. So I'm just gonna put those to use first.
We did the annual nail clipping, I don't know, a few months ago, and we noted that some of them are going to need to be revisited. Today is the day. Sheep, that is. I'm talking about the sheep. We need a physical holding. I've dragged up one cattle panel. Can you guys even see that? Hey, happy day! Y'all got enough to eat over here? What's taking you so long this morning? Well, we'll walk out there. It's just right out there. Shoulder dislocation. Dixie, Floppy, and Belle, the OGs. That's Floppy right there. Let's see if she lamps. It's one way to get your sheep minerals, feed them trees. Right now it's a race to set this up while the boys are milking so that then we're ready to go by the time the boys are done. We need zip ties or wires. Stop them, stop them! Yeah! Oh man, okay, good. I'm glad I caught you. We're gonna catch them first. We don't want them to start filling up on the new grass. Yeah, look, there's Belle. She's limping. From what I— my experience though, you kind of gotta catch them all in order to get the few. You catch them all and then let the ones out you don't need. The idea here is we need a physical holding. They're going to be startled. We're going to be catching them. They would jump right through this electric net with that much pressure. Building a cattle panel corral. All right, Jonah's got the alfalfa and the clip trimmers in the Sally. I guess Jonah ran off with Sally, which has the clippers and the alfalfa. Wait, wait! Hey, he won't stop! Jonah, you ran off with the Sally! Yeah, I said to walk to the milk. Oh, I did not hear that. You see the clippers up there? The clippers were right here. Oh no, you gotta be kidding me. We gotta retrace Sally. I didn't see them when I got in it. This is crazy. Okay, well, we'll ask the kids too. Maybe they got them out. They're in my back pocket. Jeez. Yeah, all right, I am losing my mind. Okay, let's get them over here. Everybody back up so they're not frightened. It's not bad. You want a hoof pick? It's not bad at all. You want a hoof pick? Yeah. Tango. Oh, you don't need one. It's recovered very nicely. There you go. I mean, they had maggots in their hooves before, so we just got to keep up with it and they'll stay on top of it. That is a big, big win because none of them had gnats. Their hooves are coming back. All right, I don't think we have to trim them till fall when we bring them in, fall or winter when we bring them in.
Okay, I am headed into the jungle.
They—
I feel like they just string trimmed this, they just mowed it, you know, and it's already like jungle. And then look at, look at my trellis. I've never had a trellis do so good. I'm just really happy with it. I mean, look at this jungle we've got here. It's just like jungle city everywhere I look. But look at my oregano has come back so nicely. Basil Looking nice. I feel like I have not done well with my preserving of the herbs. Oh, look, got some big monsters out here. I'm going to— I think I'm going to pull these cucumbers because they're looking gross and rough, even though they're still producing, because I have more cucumbers in the greenhouse. And then I need to check out my— and I need to pull this. Over here. It can be a little overwhelming, this, this intensity. This lettuce is done. It's so bad. We, we tried to use it yesterday, just not so bitter. And then my beets are done. I need to pull them and harvest them. For the beets, we like to harvest them and then go ahead and cook them down and freeze them all, like, prepared for winter. So yeah, let me go get a bucket to harvest all of this into so that I can easily take it up to the house. Oh my gosh, look at this one! Let's say it was ready to go. We have some small ones, we have some big ones.
What do we got to do, boss? Put me, put me to work. Two little gardeners.
I need to get two things of seeds because we need to plant.
What can I— put me to work while you go get that.
I already pulled up the beets because they— I weeded them and they pulled up.
What'd you do with them?
They're in there. Oh sweet, did you miss that? Yeah, I'm gonna let this cilantro continue to grow and just seed itself here. And I'm gonna plant more cilantro.
Okay, I can cut this comfrey down again.
You can cut the comfrey down again. And this is all— this is all morning glories. Look at this. Wow, it's all morning glory. You want to plant— if you want to pull the morning glories in this area, it looks like—
okay, leave the sunflowers.
Yeah.
Hey, you want me to get the boys to get some grass clippings when they mow tomorrow?
Yeah, that would be good.
Most people don't like weeding, but I actually like pulling the weeds. Because it's like, it's like we're killing bad guys or something. We've grown comfrey around our fruit trees. Well, it's a living mulch. It's hard for anything to grow up in there, but we can also cut it 4, 5, 6 times in a season and have mulch. You clearing out the old cucumbers, planting new? Yeah. Are you really gonna have Lily plant cucumbers here around the persimmon tree?
No, not Cucumbers. The calendula.
Oh, that's what that is. Something's happened to our persimmon tree. Gotten a disease or something, and it's dying, I'm afraid. Oh my, is that a cucumber?
Where?
That might have the— I might have the record just now. Should we weigh that one and have another contest? It's not 2 pounds. You think it's more? No, it's less. We should let it grow. She's picking it, y'all. It's bigger. That's got to be bigger. I think you have to break your record. Holy mackerel! 2 pounds and 3 ounces. 2 pounds, Papa!
2 pounds! Gonna head down into the greenhouse, the little greenhouse, and see what we have that needs to be transplanted out. We've got basil. Oh good, we have at least one dill. That's good. Oh, I have 2 sunflowers that made it, and I have some calendula I need to put out.
Feeling rushed because it is so hot out here. I think it's the hottest it's ever been. It didn't cool off last night, so we didn't have this like cool start. We were already warm going into this heat. Look at that big sunflower! Ever seen such a trunk? We didn't do this on purpose, but it worked out wonderfully because it shades the lettuce. Plant that tulsi right next to that comfrey. Boy, those raised beds wants to grow something, don't they?
They do.
It's pure compost from the chickens. Mmm, smell that.
I know, it smells like sarasota.
This is, uh, pink cabbage, purple cabbage. We fermented it for 1 week. It's got to be one of my favorite ways to preserve. And look everyone, Smiley's back. How was Spain?
A saga. But it was great. It was great.
You're still smiling.
I'm still smiling.
Okay, good. That was good. Does it mean it's more healthy too, the further it goes?
I mean, there's probably more probiotics, I'm guessing. Yeah.
It's pretty sour. On our way to another healing measure for my shoulder. It seems to be healing well, but this will— maybe this will put a Turbo boost on it. Acupuncture.
She's gonna loosen up a lot of those muscles.
All right. She says it's gonna be a treatment I've never experienced before, so.
Well, you might have experienced it.
We are home. Jonah's been working on a trailer renovation. Get in! You cleaned out the pole barn, man. Uh-oh, how are we gonna get through here tomorrow? I don't know. Why didn't you do it right there? Because this is close to the shop. What have you done? I've, uh—
Did you cut this off right here?
Yeah, I'm gonna cut those off because it's too close. No, I welded this. Nice. Taco Tuesday, by the way. Our sauce to the Mexican rice. Happy day.
