Use it Up & Wear it Out

The video captures a day on a family farm where an adult (Speaker A) coordinates chores with several children (Gideon, Lily, Jonah, Josiah) while managing limited resources and a variety of farm tasks. The conversation covers feeding chickens with scraps due to a feed shortage, herding a moose and handling sheep and cows, and teaching the kids how to operate and repair farm equipment. Throughout, the adult emphasizes a philosophy of resourcefulness—using items until they wear out and then repurposing them—while demonstrating practical problem‑solving, such as cleaning a poop‑covered collar, fixing a broken hose, rebuilding reel handles, and improvising a dryer knob. The dialogue also includes moments of mentorship, reminders about homeschooling, and the balance between work and leisure (e.g., tea time). The overall narrative showcases hands‑on farm education, sustainable practices, and the challenges of multitasking with children on a working homestead.
Chapters
Don't feed the breakfast posse. We're about to run out of feed and we need to last until the first week of December.
So feed them scraps?
We have plenty of scraps. Look at those scraps. Come on.
Josiah can take the one.
And how many eggs did they give us? This many?
My chickens lay one egg.
It's not like that's helping us much. No. So feed them some scraps. Yeah, yours too, Lily. No more grain.
I think I'm just gonna, uh, put it in my curfew salad.
Okay, that's fine.
Can you save those, uh, some of those chicken scraps for my chickens?
Some of those will go to your chickens and the rest to the breakfast posse, okay? Come on, Gideon. Here's your sweater, bro. What are you doing? We're not eating snacks. No freezer snacks. Did you not eat your apples and cheese?
I'm hungry.
All right, come on.
Look, I'm walking now.
You can take them with you. Charlie got taken away yesterday. What have we got to do? Jonah's chasing moose off. We're trying to get him in. What are you doing? Here he comes. Okay, is there a gate opening? He has to have an opening, guys. Now he's just busting through the fence. Here, I gotta— let's open the gate.
Oh my gosh, he'll go under. He'll go under.
Should we really be teaching him to go under though?
Yeah.
All right, all right, well, let's turn it back on so she doesn't start pushing through fences. Gideon's chasing him. Oh, that's the problem with getting him to go under stuff. We can fix our lane here to look more like This— doesn't this look nice? Two strands tight, as opposed to this twisted down, missing all over the place. There you go. Look at that.
Can you bring him this way?
Yeah, there is poop all over the collar. Okay. Give me the rope halter, please. We're gonna take this collar off and wash it. Okay, we got the rope halter on here. Just— I set this trap out up right over there. You can read all the textbooks you want, take all the educational videos you want, but nothing prepares you for poop on the collar. How do you— how do you get poop off of a collar? There's no poop on a collar section in Joel Salatin's books. This gets wet, it's outside, so I'm guessing that's okay. There's no poop on a collar in the leather handbook, the leather care handbook either. What I'm saying is, I guess— why 4?
Because I want to get my boot.
Okay, buy your boots in there. I have no idea.
Oh really?
Uh-oh, I forgot again to switch it to take these towels up and wash them. Let's put your collar right there. No, no snack please. No snack.
Oh, but I promise I will eat it fast.
You know, it's one thing if I forget something and just have to walk up there. But it's another when it just throws the kids for a loop. Are they doing a homeschool lesson? Looks like I forgot to drink the rest of my water. Half a lemon in a quart water first thing in the morning.
Distracted.
I can— I could put a hole through that target.
Okay.
Wow, I tried. It's harder than it looks. That's good for you guys to come out and practice that, but not during chore time. Let's stay focused. All right, can you guys grab my milking pails and my tumbler? Thank you. Um, that's a possibility, yeah. I got her clean. She's ready to go for you guys. What is going on here?
I get to decide what chair I like the best.
For what? What about this stool?
It's a little rusty. It got poop on it.
Okay, you'll see there's a reason they use little stools as opposed to camping chairs. Come on, Mr. Brown, you and I. That's fine. It's time to go though now. Okay, you guys got this. Good. You want to take Henry to take hay, or do you want to go get the mower?
Mower.
Okay, before we start that, you have to check gas. Yeah. It's been just a second. There's little things like Rebecca wondered why this was darker here on this wood, and I said I bet it was animals rubbing against it. Well, you know who would know that? Well, Papa, he would know that.
Really?
And we'll just never know. So in some ways we're on his land and you guys are reminding me of him and how he grew up. So it's a nice reminder, but it's also like—
Buggy Man painted it.
I'm trying to have a moment here, and— but it's almost like we are also new to a new land because now there's so many mysteries. There wasn't much he didn't know about this land. All right, I had my moment. You can talk about the boogeyman now. How's it going, guys?
Not bad.
It's not bad.
She pooped 4 times and 4 times and peed once.
Okay, what happened to the lawn chairs? Is she empty yet? Okay, let's pour that into the reservoir. He is nursing with the rope halter, but I had to loosen it way up around his, uh, mouth. Boy, it's a poopy day, huh? Moose just pooped. All right, come on. She pooped 4 times on you. Separate. That means you got started again within 5 minutes together. Okay, she got— she— he got it going. Back up, please. You can come through when I get him through. Okay, here, hold that for me. Hold it steady, please. Dang it! Whoa, that's our apple cider vinegar, man. Okay, Jersey flop. There you go. You're not gonna get rewarded for flopping down. I finished it off there. Good job, guys, on the first round. Um, you'll get them out and I'll take this up, and then we'll go get hay together.
Yeah, the captain was not a very good captain.
Come on, Gideon. Okay, what about your sweater? Why'd you take it off?
Oh, you can put it out.
No, that's—
yeah, why did you do it?
I'll figure it out. Lily, do you want us to go with, or do you want to stay here and get a head start on the house?
I'm gonna drink my tea, then I'll head outside.
There's a time for tea and there's a time for working. Right now is not the time for tea. At least you know where they're at. Somebody gave her some milk.
Yeah, I'll put the milk back on.
Look at what she goes to first too. This is a mess. Huge mess. Huge mess. They don't necessarily tell you about the messes either. Bring it here for a second. Well, we're gonna use it up, wear it out, do or do without. This hose is worn out.
It was on the farm trip.
Was it?
Yeah.
Oh, this went with us on the Great American Farm Tour?
I think so.
In this case, we're gonna reuse this.
Okay, you making little hoses?
What do you think I'm gonna do with that? Well, we need to wash it off, it's got poop on it.
I think I know what you're making.
What do you think I'm making? Uh, What is it for, Lily? What's your guess? Well, get off of our truck. Help me, help me get this cat off, please. Oh, tracking.
Oh, oh yes.
How'd that happen? Moose is way over there in the sheep's paddock. Won't hurt anything except he might tear up the fences.
I know what it's for. Siphoning?
Siphoning, good guess, but no.
Holler.
Jonah, did you do the luchadors yet? Okay guys, don't hit this. It's on. Ready? Jump! You got our line? Any guesses yet? What?
Um, yes, it's easier.
Boot comes out the other end.
All right, haven't come out yet.
Keep going. There it is, there it is. All right, now let's, uh, put it back together. All right, Lily, hook us up. No, there's a hook. Look, come here. There's a hook right there. Let's weld it on. There you go. All right, get in. Let's try it out. Oh, you guys unhooked it over there. Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without. Repurpose that hose. New grass for y'all. Yeah, let's go get our mower. They don't tell you about this either. All these dirty cloths. How they tear up and then clog up the dryer. I think I used that one. I think I wore that one out. They clog up the dryer filter.
So—
so that pointer is one off, if that's a pointer.
Mm-hmm.
I know I need to just buy another—
oops. I'm gonna just buy another one of these. I'm not gonna call a repair person.
How do you get that off and on?
I'm gonna give up. I'm gonna YouTube it.
They don't tell you what to do when your dryer knob— washer knob breaks off.
I'll do that.
Okay, sit.
It was water, Papa. So I blow the bubble and went—
okay, you going back to camp? Yeah. Camera. Okay, I'm gonna go edit. All right, come here guys, we have another handle. Jonah, right there, here's a handled one. Okay, look, and then we're gonna need a she plane, so really we're gonna need two of those, aren't we?
Yeah.
Okay, do we have— do we have one to make another one? Can you find one like we did before? It was so convenient. Here it is. Here, Josiah, you can do that in just one second. Okay, so let's get the, the, the line off of this. There you go. You want to put a hose over it, Jonah? Remember how we had that broken hose?
Yes.
There you go. If you do that, then the handle won't have to spin on your hand. I got Lily doing it. We're gonna have to do 2 more reels, guys, and because we need 2 for the cows and then we'll need 2 for the sheep lanes. This is one of the old rails we made. Hey, get in! Can you stop doing that for a second? Thank you. Set it down. Thank you. Your hand actually There's nothing. The hook— see? Yeah, good, Jonah. Show them. The hose, it's actually— go on, do your spin. The hose stays in place and it spins on the metal and you don't feel it. Getting— why'd you get the staff? You will not. You'll leave it out there. Why do I torture myself? Yes, you will. Grab this. Grab this, please. Oh, you left it. Look where you left it. Come on, let's get it.
What is this?
Put it up. I don't know. Let's go put it back, please. Thank you. Let's set up the next cow's cross fence and then we can get their own one up. You see what I'm saying? We can even set it up for tomorrow. Not the best. Pasture right here. But the only way we can make— or the best way we can make it better is to put cows on it. All right, one more knot for this rope. There's one there, one there, three— there's four, four ties in it.
Oh yeah, use it up, wear it out, make it do it.
That's the theme today, isn't it? We got sheep to new grass. They are into this new paddock. They were way up there. We built a— this is, this is what we use the reels for, just a quick and easy two-lane strip just to bring them back down here. Now we're going to work on getting moose, so I say we get Moose back in this lane. He's way over there.
Who's that? Grandma.
And we bring Moose back through, and then we'll herd him back first. Lily, don't let the sheep get out. If they start coming out right there, stop them. All right, come on boys. Here he comes right for it. Wow, look at that. We want him to go down the lane. Hey, hey, hey! There we go. All right, stand in the middle there, Lily, so he goes in. Wait, there you go. Now herd him in there. Good, perfect.
