We added Cabinets (from the land) to Our Homestead DREAM House and They're FANTASTIC!

Victor and Rebecca install cabinets and build a kitchen island on their homestead while juggling horse training for Lily, garden planting, and repairs from a recent grease fire. They work through measuring, welding issues, and soil amendments like hay-bombing while managing family appointments and design choices between walnut and poplar finishes.
Chapters
I'm having him make breakfast. This is your first time making breakfast? I think he's more than capable. I think you've got those whisks. Cut those bacon into bite-sized pieces and start frying them. You got it? You got that? Don't cut your finger. Cut it all the way through.
La la la la la, let me be free.
Pretty good. The excess grease in here. Let's go. We've got a couple of hours here till we gotta go. Very important lesson today for Lily. We're taking a break from the show lessons and we've got her— we've got Peaches, her main riding horse, going to a pro. Peaches has been like doing some minor bucking and stuff. Oh, that's right. Yeah, Lily's got this ready. We do have a problem. There's a rotten board here. There's no bolts or screws. Do these literally just slide out? Whoops. Hey, why'd we skip this?
Terrible grass.
Well, best way to improve is put animals on it, isn't it? You can also let it go to maturity.
Doing great. You hay bombed it.
Why? What hay bombing do?
I don't know. Nothing's growing.
It added all this, bro. Clover's coming up. This is silt from our pond from cleaning it out. I thought silt was nutrient dense, but it sure is not growing anything special. I wish they would have not skipped this, and I wish we would have hay bombed it. Oh good, don't touch it. Looks like maybe you touched it, might shock you. Looks like we went too thick on this. This was a hay bomb in the winter. We probably went too thick on this. Well, we'll see what happens to this long term. How's the burn pile? What's up with the rocks? I don't know, I just have it like that. All right, there is a strategy in also leaving it. Yeah, and then letting it go into maturity, let all the seed heads come up, then— and then we'll hit it next round. Okay, lots of cabinets, cabinets everywhere. Jared, good morning! We did not end up locking You didn't end up what? Blocking. Blocking? That's okay, we don't need blocking. We wanted to. Did you sleep good last night in the barn? We slept— I slept really good. I was on my cot. I wasn't so happy about my little cot, but other than that, yeah. So right now this is a room full of cabinets on the ground. Let's see what happens by the end of the day. Looks like these boards were put in and then the lips, uh, welded over. I'm not sure that they would do that so you could replace these boards. Will we be lucky? Do we have some of that in our Well, we could rip one. That might be one right there. Are you kidding? That's it. This one wants me to carry him today. Why do you want to carry me today? Why? I mean, I don't mind. Should we go get the Ergo? Because it's gonna be hard to carry.
Let's get the Ergo.
Oh, is it? Is it really? I don't think it is. I think it's at the farmhouse if we have it. We might have had to send it off to be washed. Do we have the Ergo or do we have to send it off to be washed? From the smoke. Shoot, he's being clingy today. He wants to ride in the Ergo. I hate to ask you to do this. What? Will you contact that guy today? We gotta contact the insurance adjuster to get the textiles washing. That is not a fun job. She's managing our— from when we had the grease fire in the cabin, managing all the insurance, damaged stuff. Okay, we have no ergo. I'll just have to carry you unless you want to walk with Gideon.
It's a lot better. I love you.
Forgive the unsteadiness. There's a chop saw right there. Hey, can I make a cut on this chop saw? Thanks. All right, let's make sure it's got power. This is a cool built-in custom table. Cabinet guy would have that, wouldn't he? You put a measuring tape in there. Tools. That's really cool. He ended up with a splinter, so we took a break, got his splinter out. He was helping. In the meantime, let's cream separate. 1 quart of cream for drinking, perhaps ice cream. Here's some more skim.
Pour it in there.
Don't spill it. Oh boy, wasn't expecting that. Okay, I don't know if we're doing this in the rain, Lily. I bet class is canceled. Where is my hat? I've lost my hat somewhere. I feel naked without my hat. Texted the pro. Seems like there's an arena she's trying to get us into. That's good. I want this to go on. This is the foundation of what we need to do to get Lily's horse working right for her. And the pro said by the end of it, Lily will be able to safely ride Peaches by herself at the end of this 5-week period, 2 times a week. Now that's the thing about rain in April here— it could come on like that and it can leave like that, and nobody ever can predict it. I thought I made it too long just in case. Hopefully it'll slide in there. Oh yeah, it's got a bottom. Okay, now perfect. Now slide it this way a little bit. Oh wow, Papa did a good job!
We should do every single one.
We got the trailer hooked up. I figure I'm gonna be taking time over the next 5 weeks leaving the farm twice a week to go do this with Lily. I'm gonna film it. We're gonna document this for her channel, you know, get a double whammy from it, get some good video content for her channel and get this horse to where she can ride him safely by herself. What are they scared of? Peaches got dirty. Lily, we filming your video yet?
Yeah.
All right, bye-bye. Have fun taking Gideon to the chiropractor from his bike accident. He seems to be doing just fine though now. We just wrapped up the lesson with Lily. This is gonna be a commitment. I think I'm gonna be away from the home for 3 hours all said and done. Hey, you know we love you, right?
Yeah.
Yeah, 3 hours twice a week. It's for you, right? You know that it's for you. Henry, come on, let's check on the cabinets. Uh-oh, some are on the wall.
Holy cow, you guys have real cabinets.
You got an HGTV house now, Beck. What a fun stage you have in the process. You come in when the hardwoods are down and the floors are up, or the walls are up, and yeah, you start putting the first living spaces up. All right, we're gonna go plant. We got some of the, uh, wow, do you like it?
Yeah, it's so nice. The laundry room.
What are we seeing down here? The drop ceiling.
It is so ugly, but—
It is so ugly. That is beautiful.
I mean, it's not terrible.
Hey, plenty of room to weight train.
So like, this is why we did it, is so that we can just pop up the panel and get in there if we need to.
Rebecca, do we need to water these? They made it.
I'm gonna water these.
Were these the ones you were worried about?
These ones. This one.
Did they all make it?
Um, it seems like they may have.
Okay, the ventilation helped.
No, this one died. This Mountain Fresh died.
That may or may not have been from burying it.
And this one died.
You moved holes for your woo stick?
Yeah.
There's a lot in here that needs transplanted, it looks like.
A lot of this stuff. Well, so we need to pot up some tomatoes.
Did the plant sale already happen?
Yes, that's why.
Why didn't we get anything from the plant sale?
We did. That's what this stuff is.
Okay.
A watermelon— two watermelons are coming up. Our future, our future is bright. Three, three, three watermelons coming up.
These are ready, just so you know. No, so Well, you're gonna pot them up.
Well, they just came out. Oh, look at this one. This one fell and it wants to—
it wants to grow. Well, I'm gonna go get to work on putting these beets out. Do you want to tell me where they go?
Yes, I've told you.
Red Ace beets, ready to go. Tell me one more time, it's on tape. I'll rewind it if I need to.
And broccoli, they go in the broccoli row.
We're gonna have way too many beets, so where do you want them, all the rest?
It's like 50 feet.
Get down, let's go plant beets. You want to plant beets? Becca, your brassica's still protected?
I think so. I mean, there's bugs in there, but—
You back in the carrots again? Yep. You gonna actually eat these carrots?
Yeah.
This is not a great germination. What did we do wrong?
You didn't water it. Yeah, after you planted it, is my guess.
You maybe got half of what you would have gotten.
I know, it's depressing because I don't want to go to the grocery store.
25 feet beets, here we come. We planted beets. Hey Rebecca, we have a quarter of a tray of beets left. What about beets? Extra beets? And what about these potatoes that are going to crowd out these onions? I say we got a lot of potatoes over there. Let's pull these potatoes up.
I'll do it.
What? Yeah, but be careful not to pull any onions, bro. Thank you, baby. You're a good compost wetter. Do you see Papa without his shirt on? Take your shirt off. I didn't take my pants off though.
Imagine if you were just like that.
Hey, make for a more entertaining video, wouldn't it, if I was out here in my underwear? Yeah. We got the beets planted, we got the garden hoed, and then it rained. You don't want to weed right before you rain, really, because then the, the weeds that you leave behind, they just are able to reroot. Rebecca, let's do check the root cellar though after this rain event. Incidentally, soccer got canceled. You do have Quite a bit of water in here. Did we flood? We have not flooded.
Oh wow, what'd you do?
Uh, I'll show you what I did. We are getting some moisture right here, so that means right there, right here, have some waterproofing to do out there, huh? Why wasn't this waterproof? Was waterproofing underneath the— this stuff, this one?
I don't think it was on this one.
Wow, look, I didn't suspect it'd come from that side. That's not good. Nothing in there. It was a good rain event. Where is this coming from? That's like back there. Could be this wood. Could be we're not sloped away from the house. Yeah, we're lower right here. This needs to drain better. Everything from right here has nowhere to go but down there. This is my jerry-rigged because there's a gap here because this wall, there's about this many inches that it doesn't hit a gutter. So we'll have to— maybe that's what we'll do, but maybe we'll figure a little something better out. Anyway, I don't want to end it on that note. Surely let's have a happy ending. Wow, you're gonna not know what to do with all this room.
I just want to cry. I've never had anything like this ever.
Look at this island. You'll have this as counter space. Do you have counter space anywhere else?
This is my trash can.
Or is this all your counter?
This is my trash can. Look at this job. Wow, I did all drawers, everything in drawers as I could, as much as I could.
They don't have much left to do. Is that a dresser?
No, that's our— that's our vanity.
So a lot of the furniture is this, super nice. Why'd you choose the darker walnut for the bathrooms and the lighter poplar for the Well, poplar is the paint. Oh yeah, I guess you did do a walnut for the island.
I did a walnut, and then I'm going to have a, um—
what a good mix.
He's building me something that looks like this to walk into here. It's going to look like this. I was talking, thinking about maybe having him build me something for my fireplace mantle. Yeah, the other thing was maybe like a seat here. Yeah, it's across to do more seating. I want to get my couch in here first. Yeah, see how it flows. The other thing was maybe doing like lockers over there, although I don't know if I want to do that because I want to put my Christmas tree there.
Yeah, you can have a gigantic Christmas tree.
And here I want to do like hanging plant, and then maybe down here a plant stand.
I don't know. Is he taller than you now, Beck? Uh-oh, he is.
He's wearing cowboy boots though.
What just happened?
He's getting older.
He's my sweet boy.
