On our way to fishing this morning on the e-bikes. Crazy road we gotta cross here. Big time traffic. Well, we made it. A few minutes late, but it's a private tour, so we're cutting into our time. Should be okay. Bet that's him right there.
What's your name? What's your company?
Jason, Captain Jason, CharlestonFishingTrips.com.
He's seen the birds diving in here and telling them where they're at.
See what one flip is?
Goodness. What are we going to be catching today?
Shrimp in here? Yeah, we're probably gonna target the trout, redfish, might get a sheep's head or a black drum, ladyfish. Stingray, never really know. And we're gonna let Rodney do the work with those. Rodney is the rod holder.
Okay.
And then I'm gonna give y'all some popping cork along the grass, see if we can pick up the trout.
What are you hoping to catch, Jonah? Something. You'd be happy if we catch something?
Something that we can eat.
Are we anchored right here? How are we staying in the same spot?
Uh, the trolling motor is spot locked. Up, try. Hold on one second. Let me see real quick. Get him out the pylons here.
All right, here you go.
Here you go.
We'll get this one in. Come over to this side. Over top of you. All right, come over here. Keep reeling as you go. Go all the way. There you go. Reel, reel, reel, reel, reel. Yep, yep.
Go, go. Doing good.
Pump up, reel down. Pump up, reel down.
Ease him up.
All right, there's your redfish. Take that. Nice work, man. Spot tail, that's what we called them growing up, but somewhere along the lines it got cool to call them redfish, and now everyone calls them redfish.
I can see why.
That was hard.
That's hard. Yeah, it's a big one.
I'm gonna say 24 on this one. Maybe 25.
He's got his redfish measure.
Easy girl. Yep, 20, 24 and a half. So if you average 24, 25, that's perfect. All right, so what we'll do— wait, you can't keep her. All right, that's a speckled trout. Those are delicious.
Nice, good job. What's the best tasting one we're gonna catch today?
Oh, that's why I mean, if I'm eating something inshore, it's typically flounder trout or whiting. I mean, it's in the slot if y'all want it.
You want it?
Do you, Papa?
How many got— we got 2 trout.
It's probably enough for us, huh?
Cool. Well, if we get another trout, we which hopefully we will. Why, is this one not taste too good?
That's not my favorite.
No, we're going to another spot. What are we gonna fish this time?
I think we might go for a shark.
Oh boy, he's got something. He's got a little something. Have you ever caught a stingray before?
Don't touch him. You can touch him on the nose right there.
That's him.
Yes, they got the barb right.
Are those any good eating?
See his barb now, huh?
Back to back, my man. Is that a trout?
Uh, whiting.
Is that one good eating?
Yep, they're delicious.
Can we keep that one?
Yep.
You're doing good catching us some lunch. We're hungry without you.
Oh, there he is!
You got another one! It's a hot spot.
Wow!
Let's keep that one and get rid of this one.
I want to try this one.
Yeah, that one's gut hooked anyway. Those— you can keep all— we keep both of them. Ease them up, ease them up.
There you go.
Probably a little shark nose.
Wow, you did it!
You got your shark!
Little guy.
These don't get much bigger than this. Atlantic sharknose. So when you're holding, it's like you're choking them. You want to hold them right there under his jaw, both hands real tight.
Now when you go to release them, just all at once toss them.
Nice, good job catching a shark. We got it untangled and it looks like we still got it.
His jaw's protruding out.
Kind of neat.
Why do they protrude out like that?
I guess that's whatever they're feeding. And see, they got these— when they're feeding, they can cover their eyes like that. They can mess you up with those teeth though. Rub your hand down and then rub your hand up.
They go up. Wow, super sticky this way.
Smell them, you'll see what I mean by that ammonia smell.
Yeah, cuz you're saying he pees through his flesh.
They urinate through their skin and there's no bones in them. It's all cartilage. Back Back to back.
You got a bigger one this time.
Just take your time. You have to take your time. You can't horse it. You just— he runs, let him run.
How heavy is this one compared to the other ones?
I can't do that. That's funny. And then when you get to there There, yep, you can go all the way to the water with that rod.
He caught a 3.5-foot shark. 4.5-foot, he says.
Oh yeah.
You gotta get a picture with that. Come on, come on.
You can hold the tail.
We are on the way to get baby chicks, I think, or turkeys, or both.
I'm not sure.
We'll find out when we get there.
You guys okay? Yeah, you guys okay? Thanks.
All right, those look like turkeys, so we have our turkeys for the year. Are they looking healthy? Yeah, they do good. Let's see them.
Oh wow, look at— hi guys! Hi turkeys!
Are you ready to get out? All right, let's get them home. We have two more shipments coming probably tomorrow with the Cornish Cross. How are they doing, Gideon?
We're heading back. Did I say that?
More than I expected.
We're back and they know.
They did this last—
they were back as fast as we were. It's gonna play that fish. Just wait, guys.
Hey, get out of there, Larry.
Oh.
That's my favorite part right there. Oh yeah, the roe. Oh, so good, especially if you fry it.
You're getting pretty good at that.
Well, I've had a little practice.
I got my man in training doing dishes. I'm staying strong with the carnivore diet even on this man trip. That's easy when you're catching fish. Look at this. No, those aren't testicles, that's eggs. The eggs are all up in there. Being here, it's nice, it's fun. I would say chiefly the kid and I are getting bonding time, wouldn't you say?
Uh-huh.
He's enjoying eating out on the junk food. What do you got? Two of your food. Lily made you some cookies, blueberries, uh, potato chips, like a cereal.
Yes.
Junk food. Well, that's our junk food.
It's all organic, gluten-free meat, watermelon, veggies.
You know you're gonna eat a lot of meat if you come with me. I wouldn't call this a coming of age. I would not call this a rite of passage. If we're talking about man being a giver, I don't know, we're kind of just having a good time taking, you know. We're just like— we literally just took.
Okay.
I feel out of place not, not being able to serve Mom, not being able to serve the kids, the— all the animals. I think a rite of passage would probably be having somebody do their— do all the chores by themselves for a week. That'd be the right passage into manhood. Would you be ready for that one? Ah, for going some service trip or something.
I did that the whole time you had wrecked my crew.
I think, I think you and Josiah even have gone through your rite of passage. When I was injured this last summer, you guys totally shined and took over. It'd be best if you don't like absolutely need to take a trip like this to get these points across because you spend so much time together. And I think because we spend so much time together, we're— I gain trust. One thing I've thought about is with trust You want to be able to say, "I don't know," or, "I made a mistake." You don't always have to have the right answer to gain trust. You can say, "Oh, it's this way," and then you go this way and it's wrong, you just have to say, "You were right." And I think you can maintain trust that way. The skin comes off easy if you don't want to eat it, Jonah. I'm eating the skin. It's the best part for you. This, this fish is not salmon. It crumbles.
That's why the guy was frying it in that, uh, cornmeal.
Fish eggs.
Can't say I've ever done that.
Oh, that looks so gross.
It's meaty cheese almost. It's got the texture of like real fine ricotta cheese. That's probably a superfood.
It's really good.
I'm just making sure I don't get a bone.
Yeah, you said it was 98% boneless, but the fish is good. Wow. Mmm, it's a little bad. It's just a weird texture.
No, I'm not eating that.
Eat it. Superfood.
It's cheese.
Now you can see—
tastes like a vegetable.
You can see the eggs.
Yeah.
