We Destroyed Our House (DEMO) No Turning Back

In this family vlog, Victor Justin Rhodes narrates a multi‑day demolition of the family’s cabin/house, documenting the physical teardown, the logistical challenges, and the emotional undercurrents of a major lifestyle shift. The family coordinates tasks—crowbar work, sledgehammer demolition, removal of ceiling, walls, and insulation—while juggling farm duties like horse‑driven logging and animal care. Victor and Rebecca discuss a minimalist philosophy, deciding to discard excess items, downsize furniture, and consider future amenities such as a wood‑powered hot tub or a compact kitchen. A significant subplot follows Jonah’s medical update: an MRI revealed joint inflammation, prompting physical therapy and a cautious approach to movement. Throughout, the vlog blends casual banter, instructional tips (e.g., mask use, tool handling), and reflections on the transformation of their living space, highlighting both the practical steps of demolition and the family’s emotional response to “no turning back.”
Chapters
It has begun. The holler house is never going to be the same. This is the point of no return. Gideon, you want to go get our thingamajig? Good morning, Randolph. Good morning. Rebecca's got a big old list for you. Randolph is on remove light duty. We should probably get some shots of this before. Generally, this is getting taken down to its bones. And we've already made big headway on ceiling. Come on, if you won't go get it, I'll go with you. Got our crowbar. Well, we have a stool just like that. That's what we need. I thought we left it right here. It's at the house. There's the stool. You was right. Hey, you got a crowbar, Randolph? That'd be perfect for you. You start right here. You just gotta get one going and then you'll— there you go. You're into this, huh? Huh? Josiah, you get to help. Get to tear up your home and get in trouble. Board ceiling off now. How about let's do the trim next? Now he's going at the popcorn ceiling. I don't know if we can be in here. Do we even have masks? Randolph to the rescue. He had some masks. Rebecca's gone with Jonah on an appointment, and Billy's calling. She's watching the baby. Apparently she needs help with a diaper change. Got you all taken care of. You happy? Yeah. 15 to 11. Where did the time go? I did line up the horse loggers. It'll be 2-ish weeks from now. We're logging our land with horses. A few days before, the wood for this floor. Got your mask on? Watched a YouTube video on this. I'm not sure if it's gonna help as much, but you get your hands in there. And then when you don't have a hand spot, make one with your hammer. I would like to wear glasses, but I can't wear a mask and glasses. Randolph on double duty. Now we have a fan in here and a light. Thank you, Randolph. How was your appointment today? Hopeful? Yeah, this is for a special PT.
She does—
you want to be the baby? There, you can see yourself now. Baby on the vlog.
She does like recovery from injury. We got the results to his MRI. The surgeon wants to talk to some of her other people, other people in her circle, to ask them what they think. He had inflammation in the joint is what the MRI showed.
What is this? We gotta ride. He put me on the dirt bike earlier. I don't know if that's a good idea. Is that a good idea? Oh, he's like, let me ride. No. What do you think, Lily? Are you sad? Oh yeah, it's different, Lily. There's no turning back, babe. Look at this. Let's get a cabinet out. What do you think, Beck? I don't know. Hey, there's no turning back now. What are you scared of?
What happens if we uncover something that we can't fix?
He's looking diligently. You guys are having too much fun with that. You getting with it, buddy? Yeah. Oh my, he's got the big gun now. He's having too much fun. You having the most fun? Probably. We got a job for Josiah. We're gonna push it to the deck. I'll stop you, okay? We got the gate open. We can just Throw it all in there. One day, half full. I'm back. Had to go edit a little bit, and this is what I come back to. You're putting a handle on the mountain board. They're out of hay, they're out of water. We don't think we fed Nacho yet today. Jonah's cooking. Come on, get in. Let's, let's, let's demo, man. You've been working all day. Good job, buddy. You too, bud. I think Randolph's prepping our tomorrow. They're gonna want to rip this off tomorrow. Well, we'll have her ready. Okay, good deal. This one will be fun. You'll be able to knock a hole in that. What's the plan, Randolph? Let's get this out of here. Get rid of the flipping shells. Cabin life. We have got to become minimal. It needs to go out. Look at all these extra spices. Like, when was the last time we used poppy seed? It's been a while. Every week?
No, but I like to make poppy seed muffins.
Two things.
You just put it out in a container. I'm okay with that. I don't use it.
I don't want to bring it. It's gonna be a season, guys. We do have this cleared. We are gonna become minimalist whether we like it or not because we have to. I guess Tomorrow Josiah will put in the new table. We got a new table, smaller table. I'm liking where we going with this. Got a bunch of stuff going to the container, and I hope to God Rebecca means what she says. She doesn't use even half of this. How was the shower? It was fabulous. She's bathing over at our house still. Were there lights? Yeah. Did we figure out what we're gonna do with a bath? It's either gonna be a wood-powered—
what did they call us, backs?
No. It's either going to be a wood-powered hot tub or the plunge with the heating element option. See this? Do you like this?
Yeah, this feels so much better.
Did you take the table?
Why can't we keep that on our table?
What?
The cloth in the middle.
I don't know about the cloth. There it is. I don't know. Good morning, everybody. You don't need that 8 o'clock breakfast alarm this morning. You remember, big day for you. She's got a lot of appointments with Jonah. She's made us breakfast, made broth last night. This is the go-to when we gotta eat lunch in town. One for Jonah, one for Mama. 3 appointments day for him. He went from never going to town, never going to town and being proud and happy about it. I mean, look, Whole Foods delivers our supplemental groceries, and now we have to go every day. Day 2 demo. You want to go at that wall now, boys? This is your chance. There you go. Oh, you got the big sledgehammer. Bit tougher than I thought, but we're making headway. But we're making headway. We needed to fill this dumpster by lunch. It's only 9:45. I think we're gonna make it. We gotta pull it out with the track loader. Masai loves that job. So that we can shut the door, and then we're gonna push it back. What would we do without this thing? You ready to get it with it? Let's get with it. Y'all want to save our height? We can try. Who stole my crowbar? Give me something. That's too dangerous. All right, let's find another way. All that has to come down, so when you disassemble everything on top Did he do anything? He's being here. He's helping. Glad you saved your height, Airline. That works. Hey, where you been? Uh, over at the house. Let's get with it. Let me go check on Randolph real quick, tell him something. Who's got you? Dad. Wanna go see the truck? Yeah, thank God for Leah today. Mom's gone with Jonah. This thing with Jonah has turned into a lot more than we had hoped it would. What you doing? Baking. What you baking? Chocolate chip cookies. Cause Mama got chocolate chips. How do you like this minimalist kitchen? It's tiny. I'll leave you to it, dar. Think we're getting the table downgrade today. What's going on here? Oh my, the door just fell off. I want that drain. The dripping is filling this up. This is useless. Brenda got our sauna in here. Look at you, you got done too. Just barely fit. Look at that, Randolph, Persona in the night. Randolph, I had one job for you and then two popped up on the way here. That door is unhinged. This is not connected. All right, let's see what we can do. All right, thank you. Later. You think you got it? That plastic piece is broke. Oh, is it? I think I've got some of that stuff. You would, wouldn't you? Thank you, man. Hey, there you go. All right, I gotta go, uh, separate. You coming to inspect? I have. I felt Lily's pain the other day. I felt a little sad today. What do you think? So there's your bathroom.
Word, Justin Rhodes.
What? I think that's— look, just a design flaw. I mean, this was built as a barn, 1x6s, and then just trim over there. But there's total— wait, there's not even a trim over that. You're doing Hardy board out there this time, right?
Well, actually, what we're gonna do is pull all of the siding off. We'll put what you're supposed to put on the house.
That probably comes before for the interior, doesn't it? You don't have to know that. You can just ask your dad. You can just say, I don't know.
I think it can happen anytime.
Big window right there.
There won't be windows here because the stove—
you can't have a window, right? You'll have stove windows on either side. It was slower going today. Bathroom was tougher than the kitchen. We sent off one dumpster though. Look at this. Would y'all look at this? That's so much better. Wow, that's opening it up a lot. There's nothing like moving to make you a minimalist, huh? You know, we lived in 240 square feet, and we did pretty good.
So had that house over there with all our stuff.
That's true, but man, we sustained for 10 months. Hey girl, you found your way over here. We've been feeding you over there. We want you to guard the chickens. What's going on, guys? You don't want to help demo? I mean, I won't complain, you're cleaning up, huh? Well then, come demo. I gotta get you in the kitchen. Josiah could come demo. Gideon, you gotta come demo. Josiah and Gideon, we putting Jonah on the domestics because his hip. It's like an inch and three-quarters difference now, higher on one side. It's going through a lot of treatments, and one is he needs to take it a little easier and not walk around so much. It's another day. Jenny, you refreshed? Oh yeah. Let's see, what shall we tear up today? I guess it makes sense just to continue down this hallway. Maybe not. Get those off. We've got to get this framing off. Maybe beyond my skill. Gotta get the insulation out first. In order to get these boards out, we have to get that support board out, these beams out, all framing out. Going to the other side, I believe we'd have to get those insulation rafters out. I feel like the progress is over here. They're working in Lillian's bedroom. Let's work in Lillian's bedroom. One, and then we'll start getting the plank. We're saving the long ones. Short ones like this might not be worth it. Yeah, that might be worth saving. You want to be nail boy? I'll be board boy. Um, so we're saving— we're going to pry all this silicone off. Yeah, maybe they are. So we might use them in the people barn when we insulate it and wall it. It's kind of sad and junky in here, huh, Si? Yeah. There's caulk in here between every single crack. This is memories back in the day. This house was really drafty, so we caulked everything. I don't think you need to caulk an interior wall. I don't think we knew any better. Little cabin life here. Mom got this outdoor bin. One good thing about this cabin, we have this little nook. It's this little private area. Southern sun that way, so nice and sunny. Got a little deck here. Inspector's here. Oh, water damage. Look at this conundrum. Take these out, gotta take that out, gotta take these beams out, we gotta take that wall, that little wall out on top, which we have to take away the beams for the insulation. I bet he's carrying a number of those, so we've got to get rid of all that. And it's not worth to keep this insulation because we'd have to pay for it to be stored, wouldn't we? This could be for the people barn. You're talking about spraying insulation? Yeah, I like that better. It's gonna be more efficient. All right, what are you doing in here differently? Just taking this out?
Um, yeah, lots of things.
Are you gonna change these walls?
Yeah, we're changing windows. How it's gonna go is this, we're actually gonna enter in through this way. So then the door will enter in like here.
Fun job for Josiah, backing up to the trailer. How'd he do? You got your sense, man. You got what you call common sense. Big Daddy's here. We're trying to decide if this wall— we want to move it back, but is it load-bearing? Randolph thought it might be, but then I was like, Randolph, this wall right here doesn't come in right here. It's not bearing a load here. So we have Big Daddy weighing in, our GC. Big Daddy, what'd you decide on this? It shouldn't be. And there's nothing holding up in there. No, and you got collars on it. Collar. And I told Randolph this was added later, this wall. Yeah, you can see this. I do think it's different material. Did you get the chains? We couldn't pull this out. Is it just too heavy or something? Like yesterday you were able to pull it. We've got to pull this away so we can shut the door. No problem. This big old door has got to shut. Oh, that's the problem. The wheel's not rolling. Dumpster number 3. I have done something to my back bad. Barely got up this morning, but I can keep them in. Tools and batteries. Here you go, Jimmy. It's not as good of a battery, but that other battery's on a fast charge. Remember, all these cross beams are tied into the wall, then that's tied into the roof and the snap, so they're just gonna saw right through the middle. Look at the progress we've made so far. I just walked from the kitchen to the bathroom to Lily's room. You guys see it though? Can you see that? It's gonna be really open. Get this one out to get that one out. I know, that's, that's the story of the game in here. I'm getting these boards out, enabled to then get this whole wall. The thought is I need to take a break from demo, necessarily take a break from the getting the cows new ground. We did not have Jimmy and Anthony, but thank goodness we have a small demo crew. The work is still going on. I feel like I'm puking. It's painful. I don't know how to take it easy, like get off demo and then start doing farm stuff. Nothing will build this pasture up faster than putting hay on it, some ruminants to graze it. What do you think, Gideon? It's so open. It is so open. Look how big! Is there an echo? Echo? Well, what do you think Boots would say about this, Rebecca?
I don't know, he'd probably think we are crazy. Yeah, I don't think he would— I don't think he would approve just because we're— we are opening a can of worms that he had closed up. This is crazy. This is nuts. This is just so much space.
What are you gonna do with all this space?
I'm gonna cook, babe. I think the kitchen was the same size as the bathroom.
There's the kitchen floor, the bathroom.
I think that I would have rather had a small bathroom than a gigantic kitchen.
What do you think? So big, right? I didn't know our house was so big.
I think because it's so compartmentalized.
Yeah, you can tell if I've had 2 coffees or 1 by how much I shake.
