We Found more Lumber for our Remodel

In this informal family vlog, Victor Justin Rhodes and his household document a day of homestead chores and projects. The video opens with breakfast and playful interactions among the kids, then shifts to a hunt for large locust (cottonwood) logs to supply lumber for a remodel, using the OnX Hunt app to map and record the trees. The family discusses the upcoming TV series "Elevated" and prepares cupcakes for the shoot. They then tackle several maintenance tasks: repairing a rain‑water collection line and tank, clearing sediment from a water screen, and installing clamps to improve flow. The herd’s health is addressed by adding minerals and dewormer to feeder sheep, and a makeshift mineral sled is built. Airsoft play among the kids provides comic relief. Finally, the family converts used IBC totes into portable firewood racks to transport harvested wood, detailing the construction process and logistics for moving the firewood to a boiler. Throughout, the narrative blends practical problem‑solving, family dynamics, and preparation for future content production.

Look at this. You getting up and at 'em making breakfast? How's it going in here? Good. Sabina, you calming her down, Lily? Yeah, I got her a toy to play with. Oh, that's good. We captured Sabina because we're getting her a tomcat this weekend. Lily's wanting to raise some kittens. So weird, we should be getting more water in here. I bet it's just turned on a little bit. We had it working earlier today. Uh, maybe crank it more. Are you done with the water up at the chickens? Lily, are you done with the water yet? I'm almost done. Okay. Whoa, I wonder if Beauty knows about that. Beautiful looking tomato. It's on! You're doing so good. The boys are back. How was the airsoft this morning? Oh, did you get shot? Did you get shot? Yes. Did it hurt? Um, kind of. That makes it exciting, huh? John shot you and Josiah. Oh, I thought you didn't get shot, big boy. No, no, he shot me. I shot him. Oh, they've got new airsoft guns. I heard Sam talking beforehand. I wonder if it's going to hurt. Thank you. You know, and there's Lily. She had just picked out some horse figurines on it. Only a boy, only a boy would say that one. And they don't want it to hurt per se, but they do want it to hurt, you know what I mean? I figure that makes it exciting. I'm gonna go bake. Okay. When's this party? That's tomorrow. Lily making cupcakes for our last film shoot for a new TV show we're doing called Elevated. I'm particularly excited about this TV series. Well, one, we've been able to help local homesteaders get a boost and elevate their game, you know what I'm saying? But this time, for the first time, we're going to collect all the episodes and then deliver them all at once this fall. We did that yesterday as a family harvesting locusts for our Homestead House remodel. I got the quota, but then when I sent the picture to Ian, he's like, oh, I don't think it's enough. But that's all we have on our farm. I think there's 2 more places we haven't looked. You look over there for some, I'll look over here, okay? Oh, look what I found! Oh, and it's a big one! Whoa! One, two, and it's gigantic! I thought this one was big. Wow, holy moly! We'll send it to, uh, Ian to see if that'll make it enough. Look around, there may be more. Usually when there's one locust, there's more. It's called a locust grove. Oh, there's one. This is what I'm talking about, a locust grove. This one's deaf. This one's going to be rotten. It's been down a while. This one, Mark was telling me, if you got those reishi mushrooms on them, means it's going to be dead in the middle. And that one looks to be the case. It's so dead. We're getting to where it'd be hard to get them out. There's our property line. Get in. And I don't think we want to go any further anyways. Be too hard to get it out. Again, this one— oh my gosh, look! That's probably 6, 7, 10-foot logs, and they're very thick. I'm kind of thinking between this one and that one, we got this. Gideon, we might as well go down the end of our cleared trail, see what else we have. Yeah, there's another one. A little one and a big one. Very dead one. Great firewood. Super dead one. We won't count that one. This one Ah, it's got some reeshies. You cut down one with huge reeshies, but was it rotten inside? No. Okay, all right, well maybe that's a, a wives' tale. Wait, there's a huge one right there! Oh my gosh, it's right— it couldn't be any easier. I don't see any reeshies. Whoa, there's two! Okay, we're gonna have all the locusts we need, bro. Three huge locusts right there. Putting in my handy dandy OnX Hunt app. You can take pictures You can mark where we are on the property. We can easily find it again. I mean, it's more record keeping, but, uh, 3 locusts here, 3 over there, 2 gigantic ones at the beginning, all marked on the map. We've reached the end of this access— cleared access road. Logging trail goes on but needs to be cleared. I'm happy. Are you happy? I'm pretty sure we found more than enough. Gotta complete my joy. Okay. We'll come get him, tell her in person. Look at this, Jonah! Look, you found that locust! Oh boy, and you want to go get it today, don't you? About 10, like— no, Rebecca, a locust! Gigantic! Where? Up above the pond, all the way almost to the top of the hill. That's the one he was at. We'll get to get all your decking, probably. You each got your apple, second breakfast for you. Did you not eat that big breakfast this morning? I did. The second breakfast. We need that sheep shot. Jonah's saying one of our feeder sheep in the woods has died. Jonah's saying it's similar symptoms to the one that died over here— diarrhea. So we got to make some adjustments. I'm about to go do the great traverse. Something's happening with our feeder sheep. So for those guys, we realized they don't have any minerals. We're gonna up our game with them and definitely get these minerals just in case. We had one die in management system too, and they had all their minerals. So, but we're gonna give them all the support they can get. The sheep shaw has got all the minerals. But wait, don't the sheep in this pasture system need the sheep shaw? Got an idea, I got an idea. The only problem with that is our minerals might fall out. Maybe not. This working out okay? Talking to you. Set it down and check their minerals while we're here. Redmond's salt on a rope as a, I don't know, fail safe. And there on my arm, putting these two here at the end. Henry, how much can you— no, you don't need to put any more in there, it's overflowing. Come over here and get this one. Good boy. Handy because he can stand up under his— he doesn't have to bend over. Oh. Yeah, he does. Yeah, he hit his head a little bit. You got it? Okay, good boy. This time let's just put the arms up there, okay? Or else we'll spill all those minerals. Go get a strap. Strap that on. Sally's Club department. You're never gonna find one over here. What are you gonna do? I need a quick connect. Can't find one? No. You won't be able to play airsoft. You have to have the female. All right, let's go. We got the strap, Henry. Let's go. It is too wide with that wheel jacked up. It's sticking out too much. Hey guys, anybody else have explosive diarrhea? I'd say they wanted some minerals. What do you say, Gideon? They're happy. I love this table. Thank you. Here you go, Henry. Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep. They're too interested in those minerals, Henry. Well, the kids have. Have found a place to hang out next to my job. We got a busted water line. It also doesn't look very strong, so we need to get safe. If we have any blockage. It has been dry though, so that could be it. We need to get some water in here. Not because The sheep have a creek in here, but I would really like to get them some dewormer. Little quick clamps just haven't been doing it, too much pressure. So I put this hose clamp on there. You guys want to go with me to the top? You want to stay here and play? Okay, I'll be right up there. Let's look for any more breeches on our way up, and then we'll make sure we're collecting at a decent speed. How fast is it going into our tank? I barely even hear it. We've just got a trickle. So we have a collection problem. I mean, this water's not moving very fast though. It's been dry, so we might be getting all we can get. Really sanded up. I don't even see any of the holes. Water's pulling up here, it's just going off on the side. We're out of holes. Oh wow, this is normally running so hard it gets to these holes, but it's not making it to these holes. Got something going now. Now this has got to get propped up or something. We're losing so much water right here. Yeah, that'll prop it up. There we go. You can hear it going now. I wonder if I should— oh look, this has gotten really sandy and sedimenty. I should probably open this up and clean it out. That's a lot of sediment. How's any moisture getting in here? I cleaned off all the mud off of this thing. It's gonna be— it's— we've clogged up our fine screen, so we're gonna have to remove this. This is a problem because if water can't get down in there. We don't have any water going into our water collection and therefore going down the mountain. Got the board frame off. So much for that screen keeping all the sediment out. Hopefully my line's not plugged up. Look how much sediment. When I lifted this up to service it, it busted the lip there. Now we have water going underneath instead of on top. Doing that across the whole board, actually. I think we've lost our cement seal on this thing too, and so water's going underneath it. And just shake this off. That's water collecting in the water collector. Yes, we need to come back and cement that. We'll be getting more water in here, but that should be enough to build it up into that tank, and then we'll call on it. It'll drain the tank a little bit, but then it has all day to fill back up, which should be enough. All right, y'all ready? I'm ready. Did you have fun? No. Yes, you did. Whoa! We will not be able to get them water, which is okay. They have a creek. As soon as the water builds up in that 225-gallon tank and then starts flowing down through this line, then we'll have some water down here. That could— that could be a minute. Look at my dirty tool and my dirty Arms! The green hands! It's the green hands, watch out! Whoa! You're dirty. Yummy. Yeah, I know, right? I helped Lily with the cream cheese and I got a handprint from cream cheese. How about that? Cucumber sandwich. Is that what you just had? I was just saying that. It's all gone. Lily, what is the deal? Well, you're the life of the party, aren't you? Yeah, we have spice nut chocolate and vanilla's in the oven. Mmm, everybody's gonna love it. I totally forgot to get the sheep. We stole the sheep shawl. They need something. Let's go. Where's Sally? Not sure if Salma's big enough. See, the sheep have the mineral sled. They have that mineral sled because the steers, which are not here— there's some steers out. The steers need the mineral sled, which— where are they, Gideon? They're not with the mama cows, and it's about to get real hot in here. We have to get them a shade. It's supposed to be like 90, 91, which is crazy hot for this time of year in this area. Found them. Never run too far. Let's go. Buffet's over. You know, they know they've been naughty. They know right where I want them to go. Moseyed right back in. Now for the shade problem for these guys. Boys, Sally's up the trail. They're going crazy playing airsoft. I need the ratchet out of her. Never mind. Now I hope this thing will fit on Selma. This spring I had this idea: let's raise the meat shaw to the sheep shaw height and let's for one see if the chickens are any more vulnerable to predators. Thankfully they weren't. The thought was this only gets used for like 5 weeks on a run of meat birds. In our case, 10 weeks, we do 2 runs. That's what I was afraid of. Sally's a little wider and it fits Perfect down in there. Can you sit in the back and hold that and I'll drive real slow? Thought was, well, if the meat shaw could just be the sheep shaw, when we create the plans for this, people could have either one. Then it could come through for folks in a pinch like this, like it's about to. We need two shaws right now. You sitting in the pan? Got it. Is it working? I don't think I'm gonna attempt that hill. Let's just gird up our loins, carry it by hand. That's probably where they got out, didn't they? Boys do a good job on their chores with airsofts on the line. They also don't. You just don't want them to do that a number of days in a row, you know what I'm saying? I definitely need to check the water. It's going to be so hot. You are welcome, guys. So good on water. Now they come home. Guys, the truck will be here in like 30 minutes. How many totes did we order? Like 58? 48 IBC totes. All right, come on, get in. The totes will be here any minute. Ordered used IBC totes that we're gonna convert into firewood racks so that we can move bundles of firewood from where we harvest it to where we're gonna burn it. Let's get the tractor. Josiah, we haul some firewood now, won't we? 30 minutes later, and that's not all. Yeah, boom, boom. We're gonna convert 30 for ourselves and then Jonah's going to convert 18 and then sell them. I mean, it was the same shipping if we got a full load, so we just got a full load. Here's the idea. Here's a crate we cut down to about right here. We grind down, leave a little bit of an opening. We go to where we're harvesting it, put wood in there, and then we take it where we need it. So it could be up into the bathtub, it could be over to the wood boiler, and we don't have to store copious amounts of wood by our house. Oh, what the heck? It came out of one of those containers. Oh, don't do that. We don't know any idea what that is.
