We Planted 200 Potatoes (1,000 LBS of FOOD)

The video captures a lively family homesteading day where the participants plan, discuss, and plant 200 seed potatoes, aiming to harvest roughly 1,000 lb of food. The dialogue moves through selecting potato varieties (Russet, Burbank, Yukon Gold), debating row placement, and improvising without internet access or the SeedTime app. Family members coordinate tasks, experiment with extra rows and container planting, and reflect on the broader workload of self‑sufficiency. They also touch on future garden projects such as high‑tunnel beds, additional crops (tomatoes, beans, peppers), and community activities like an online film festival and hot‑chocolate break. The tone is informal, enthusiastic, and collaborative, highlighting both the challenges and joys of homestead food production.

Ready to plant some potatoes? Try it.
That is bad.
These are the best carrots. You like it?
Yeah.
This is a step in avoiding the grocery store. Frangry's carrots. Why don't you try this? What do you want? I'm afraid what he wants. Sauerkraut?
No, that. This? Yeah.
I figured. A cup. Is that great for you? You like that carrot? Thank you, Casey and Tori, Honey Tree Farm. You ready? Happy Sunday seed day! Let's go! They're over here. Some kitchen stuff. And welcome to another day in the life of a bunch of potato heads. Growing what we eat and eating what we grow. There they are. If there was a snake there, it would have bit us. Okay, y'all sure you want popsicles? It's cold out. You sure this is the one time of day that you're gonna eat your popsicle? You wanna put it back? Whoa, yeah, looks like it's gonna be a bright, beautiful day but cold. Seed potatoes. Beauty's potatoes of choice. Russet, Burbank, Yukon Gold. Is that your favorite kind?
I don't know one type to another. Um, but it's— I love potatoes.
The Yukon Gold, well, it's very gold inside.
It's very, very circle.
Yeah, more like a circle. And the russet were more dark, hard-skinned.
And more like— these are french fry potatoes. They're long and good.
These are like, uh, baking potatoes.
Where are we gonna plant? Is that gonna be—
I don't know. Mom's got to look at our plan. I'm gonna go ask Mom. You guys stay here. Hopefully we don't need the internet to do seed time and know where the potatoes go. They still haven't gotten a hold of them. They're gonna send tech they can't get a hold of them in an hour. Uh, our internet is down and I don't think we've downloaded SeedTime, so we're not 100% sure which row these potatoes go in. Try this.
Good carrot.
Carrots is one of those things that's definitely best grown at home for taste.
It's pretty sweet.
Yeah, it actually has a taste.
You know who would love that?
Who? Lily, you're into it. I appreciate it. Gideon, not so much. Boss lady's here today. The potato eaters. Lily uncovered our 3 rows. Rebecca seems to think they're the 3 rows next to the garlic. You're wrong. How easy is it to change plants and seed time? Okay, so it won't really matter. It's huge. Why do you like russets? They're just— they—
I feel like they're just the best.
Why do you like Yukon Golds? The Yukon Golds are—
they're like a creamier potato.
I don't know. Much thinner skin. Yeah. You drill, we'll plant. Okay. Did you guys plant this whole third row?
Yeah.
Okay, Mom wants to do one more.
And then why don't we do that one?
We have so many.
And those two rows that will be over there.
She's gonna do those ones over there. Yeah, she doesn't like Yukon Gold as much, so we'll experiment with those.
So we'll just keep them— we'll plant all these over there.
What?
It's gonna be—
no, she's gonna do one row over here with Yukon Golds.
So pull up our tarp one more, get the whole thing, and then plant one every spot.
I guess it's gonna be a little tight, but you can try it. That's a lot of experiments going on over there. We have so many potatoes. We think we only had 3 rows designated. She thinks she can give up one more. We're gonna do a little experiment where the container was. Where we have some bare ground, plant some more. Makes sense that we'd take a chance and dedicate one more row to potatoes. I want this garden to be so full this year.
You keep it well, like weed it.
We're depending on this garden this year for sure since we're not going to go to the grocery store.
Yeah, well, we can also go to farms.
Um, I'm not— did you plan places for them to have corn?
I think so.
You can tell we have more than enough people to do this job. So when Josiah said, can he clear? I said sure. It's kind of neat to be in a stage where we can divide and conquer. And I know these days are limited though, and I'm gonna miss them when we're all out working together. He likes that plantain, huh?
It's not plantain, this is yellow dock.
Oh yeah, yeah, pigs liked it so much we're gonna try it on the chickens. We can start prepping in here for your garden in here.
Yeah.
Do you have stuff planned in here?
Yeah. Oh yeah, 100 tomato plants, 50 feet of green beans, peppers.
We had this bare ground from where the, the other container had been, and Jonah had the idea to plant these potatoes in here. You gotta step, step. You step one step back every time. Every time it says sexy, you step one step back. It's an egg fight. It's hitting them and not breaking. Do not hit your mom. Whoa, there one broke. You think this is gonna work? Yeah, I don't see why it wouldn't.
I hope so.
It'd be amazing if it did, because this is how we're going to build you beds in the high tunnel. Oh, I love this.
So hopefully it's going to work and it'll be good. That, that soil in there is really good.
Well, you know, we're going to scrape the wood chips off.
I know, I'm excited about all of that gravel there, bro.
We couldn't even do much. No, even trying. How does that feel to have kids pretty much running the farm?
Oh, it's nice. It's very helpful.
Pinch me.
Very helpful. We went so many years of us doing everything.
And all of a sudden we just recognized this is what's happened.
And now—
they can do it.
Not only were we like wiping butts, we were collecting eggs, we were milking, you know what I mean?
We were doing everything. Something we haven't done in the past, I'll admit, picking up after ourselves. Bring it that way. One of the biggest struggles with homesteading is the work. You're endless work, aren't you, Beefcake? We're hungry every day, so we have to work and grow food every day. Tiring. Some of you are tired, and maybe you're just getting started, or maybe you have spring fever, but now's the time to rest up. I want to give you guys a rest and refresh. Our Kind of Movies. Let's relax together. You want to come to the film festival March 22nd through the 24th. Free online. Find a host across the world. We're watching online. Thank you, Lily, making everybody a hot chocolate. We're just going to take a moment to relax and enjoy each other.
What am I talking about?
You're a mess. I'm not. You're a mess going under that tarp, huh?
It feels so fun.
La la la la la, let me be free.
