We Put a Cool Room in the House | This is How it Feels

Victor and his family install a walk-in cooler with CoolBot temperature control on their farm, then test it successfully. They also catch chickens, fix a chainsaw that was installed backwards, and plan storage for their harvest.
Chapters
Where'd she come from, Jonah?
Lily's flock.
You gonna catch her?
I want her to hide under there.
Oh, that'd be great. Oh, you did it! Oh, that one's spunky. Gonna get out. Guineas, chicken, those, those ices are safe from Mama's Tomato wrath in there. Those guys keep getting out and getting Mama's tomatoes. You know, here's this on or off. Jonah, look at the work they've done in just one day. Jonah, you had a good point when you said we got to throw the soaked feed in the rows, which throwing feed on the ground encourages them to till. I don't really need the rows tilled. I don't really want to put it on the beds because I don't want them to destroy it too much, so We're just gonna do all you can eat. They've done a good job clearing. We're gonna help them a little bit. Jonah, will you go get the scythe? Yay! Love that zeal. We will get the scythe and chop down this— these lamb's quarters. They can't reach. See, they've reached the bottom. We're gonna help them get to the top, break this down for us. I see you guys ate all the seeds from the acorn squash but not the flesh. Spaghetti squash too. Jonah should be back by now, but he doesn't know where the stone is. Here. All right, what's the problem? Oh, you did find the stone. There's another one in the drawer too. Okay, okay. Did you sharpen them? Wait, this is not the bush blade. Oh, that's the kid's blade. Why aren't you using that one?
I'm using this one.
Okay, let's put that one back then. How are the cage fighters? I could let them out of there, but they would be all about in here and I might chop a foot off. Let's go! When everybody rush at once, okay, that's not very exciting. All right, let's see if this is more exciting. Oh, now we're going! Oh shoot, you know what we didn't do?
What?
Grab a couple of roosters.
That's okay, we'll grab them now.
Okay, there's one.
Don't cut that ice in this.
You want to put him in there and then help me catch one? Oh wow, that one, that little one won. Maybe not. That's why these guys are the last, they're so hard to catch.
Let any other ones fly. Yeah.
Oh, there's a huge hole right here and that one just went right through.
Okay, let's get them in.
Hold on, it did reveal a weak spot though. This has been patched. I found it easier to pour it in the pan and then put the pan—
that's what I do every day.
I have to feed them. Top of the morning to you guys. That's good.
It's been 25 hours with the pigs, you'd be sitting on that barrel all day.
The object of that game would be not to get eaten. Yes, or licked. We were running low on water, almost to the nipple, so we're filling that up. Just bring that stick, let me show them how they've already eaten the charcoal. Look, they've already gnawed the charcoal off right here. See how they've cleared it right here? Still more here, but some there. Still more on it, but it's just showing they need it. They know what they need. So we're gonna do— while we're waiting on the water, let's get some more from underneath our tarp. Dries out a little better in here, so Are y'all gonna join us or what?
No, we're in our underwear.
You're just gonna play in the tent?
We're not underwear.
Water them real quick before we go do the ICs. I got the stuff to fix it. Those are shooting huge. I wouldn't mind a 5-pound average in the freezer. We've been filling up the 7-gallon water trough from last night. It was down to about right there, so we're good, we're good. We're keeping them in water 100%. Good job, Jonah. Hey, you got enough adjustable wrenches there?
Wait, this isn't adjustable.
Oh, okay.
But if you're fixing the wheel, we need this one.
Oh, I'm glad you brought that one. I love that one.
This is Penguin's first move.
Yeah, put Penguin up last night. Yes. It's supposed to go like this, and then I did do a lock washer and a nut, but I don't think that's enough. So I'm actually going to do a nut, a lock washer, and then a nut.
No holy squats right now, guys.
No holy squats. Okay, Jonah, it's going really good. There we go, that should do it. Our wheel had completely rolled out underneath the axle, but I think re-bolting it like that is going to help. Okay, now I'm gonna roll this here. Let's put the nets on. Got to work to do some on the paddocks. A little rubber mallet work. This is our worst pasture on farm, shallowest. You guys will help with that, won't you? One little chicken squat at a time. Penguin, you coming out? You gonna help her out, Jenna? What'd you say?
The chainsaw blade is on— I mean, the chainsaw chain is on backwards. It's my fault, you let me do it.
Yeah, y'all saw in yesterday's video the chainsaw was very dull and wouldn't work. One of you guys so kindly pointed out the chainsaw backwards. I bet it is. I don't even have to go look because that was so dull. It's like I was trying to cut it with a butter knife. It's got— you looked at it, it's on backwards. Yeah, yeah, it is on backwards. Okay, well, if it spins this way, the teeth are not going— yeah, no, I'm surprised it cut at all. It's weird. Okay, we'll fix that.
It goes so fast.
And, uh, get it to send soaked feed for the pigs. They're gonna love it. Trying to just encourage tilling in certain areas. All right, let's go. All right, you go get Flossy, I'll go get the milk pails. What are you up to, Lily? I don't know. You don't know? You gotta have a vision, honey. You gotta have goals.
I'm coming back out.
They score 20% of all of the points. Everybody wants to be secure. They want to have friends, peace of mind. They want to have good family relationships, and they want to have hope that the future is going to be even better.
Breakfast time. Seeing that sausage beginning to line that up, that's coming around, that's sneaking up on us. September, mid-September harvest the pigs. I've been thinking about what you said about maybe getting more pigs.
Oh really?
Should I maybe go prepared? Come on in, guys, come. Time to eat. I mentioned that I'm going out of town this weekend. I don't know if I've told you, but we're going to shoot Permaculture Pigs. We're going to go shoot a piglet pastured —farm.
Operation.
One of the suppliers for Polyface Farm. Just Joan and I renting a truck, staying in a cabin on a farm. Yep. Just overnight. Yeah, just one night. So it's gonna be a whirlwind. So Monday, there will not be a vlog from me, but you are planning to shoot on Sunday. Yeah.
I told you I would do that. Oh, you're still gonna do it? I'm gonna do it.
Okay, I don't have to include this in here. We can cut this out. No, we'll do it. This is in here. We'll do it. Okay. Sunday you're gonna film your adventures on the farm with the kids and publish that on Monday. And so then Tuesday's vlog will be of my adventures, mine and Jonah's adventures over the weekend. Okay, because you'll film something on Monday. Does that sound good? Yeah, I'll be driving Monday, I can't edit. Yeah, I'll film the whole adventure and put it all in one movie. Yeah, sound good?
Are you thinking about buying pigs? Yeah, from this gentleman?
Yeah, you were like How are we going to keep clearing our forest?
Well, but you said we should take a break.
I was looking forward to the break. We can take a break.
Let's take a break. Okay. Maybe next spring we'll get things from him.
I think, yeah. All right.
Talk to him about that.
Good.
Thank you. Take a break. Take a break. Because we're getting the sheep.
Yes. We're gonna have enough trouble with sheep, aren't we? Okay. Yeah. And we can put the sheep in that forest. Begin, you know, at least under—
Yeah, we're not going to— we're not going to lose too much time.
Yeah, they called me like last night and I called them back, but they didn't— they didn't answer. So I don't know. I mean, I saw that video that you sent me. Yeah, it did. I mean, it seemed like it would work. Yeah, I mean, I bought some bolts and then, um, I think I'm just going to try it. What's the plan today? So putting on the door. So we're gonna put on the door using these, and then we'll seal it all around it first, and then just drill a big hole. I mean, you gotta drill through that thickness.
I see you got your air conditioner running. Did you start it this morning?
I just started it, yeah. Okay. Yeah, he's live.
It's hot in here.
It's like 80 degrees in here.
I know, it probably is. It was funny because I was like, why is it so cold in here? Like, he's got that AC running.
Okay, you gonna finish today?
At least put the door on, because I mean really we're just waiting for the door and then just, um, kind of finish off the inside here, um, and then paint. So I'd like to finish today. Is this your last day of working? I like to say that, but yeah, no, I mean I could come next Monday and Tuesday, so you know, like I am chilled.
It's nice, huh? Thoroughly, yeah.
We got down to 60.
It's 60 in here. Okay, niños, y'all clean up, I go edit. Gotta edit 2 videos today. Trying to anyway. The kitchen reveal and the vlog. Kitchen reveal coming Saturday. Got my files uploading. Rebecca's calling me. Don't mind this. We're in the kitchen remodel. That's our excuse.
Well, the kitchen remodel has morphed into a whole house remodel. Oh my goodness. Well, this is a house organization.
This is an IKEA possibility for storing all these squashes we're gonna have.
Correct. So— I'm thinking right there. We're thinking that we would just take that stuff away and we would line that with shelves and it would just store the squash there. Yeah. My other thought—
IKEA shelves seem narrow.
Okay, so you can get them in two different lengths.
Oh.
It's 12 1/4 inches wide or 19 5/8 inches wide. Oh, I like that.
Um, okay. I like the 19.
So, so it's basically 20 inches is what I was saying. We can get 3 of those shelves here. And it would come out to about here. The other option is, is cleaning out the closet. And putting it in the closet.
Well, that's fine. The, the shelf— You're still ordering the same shelving unit.
Because then it would be dark. Yeah. But we, I was planning on shutting the blinds so that it would be dark in here because this is our guest room. We don't really use it that much, you know. I mean, we use it occasionally. We have people come, but it's not an everyday 67 3/8, so yep, it'll go right underneath that. It would even go underneath this, but we would need to remove that.
How are you gonna remove that without removing the hanger?
Well, we would just— what I would do is just cut this and move this down. Okay. So that it would just be that little bit of—
I like it. Let's check on the kids. Hey, are you working? I like it. We did add this to the kitchen to extend our counter, and now you guys are using it as a—
Mama said this was a good idea—
a food service. I think it's a great idea. All right guys, keep it up. Oh, you ready for the door?
Looks like it.
Oh, how's it feel, Jason? You got it boxed in.
It's rolling. Man, it feels good.
Like it's done. Like the CoolBot walk-in cooler is functional now. Yeah, just paint. And one day we'll paint and trim this outside too.
Yeah, we gotta put some more bolts on there, but yeah, that looks sharp. Wow, I can't believe you put this down.
Put that on your resume, buddy. Yeah. 53. It's chilly in here. How are you? Well, I'm here. I'm getting ready. That bit with my dad going to radiation treatment, I put that in yesterday's vlog. I'm so sorry I haven't been able to update you guys that he had kicked cancer. There was no signs of his cancer anymore, but then it came back. So his numbers are high again, and actually he's starting an intense radiation treatment. Uh, he's got to go in every other day, I think, for like 6 or 8 weeks. Yeah, just that's an update on those of you who are interested in my dad and his journey with cancer. Unfortunately, it's back. All right, I'm going. I'll see ya. Look at what just came out of the dehydrator. Where's your dad when we need him? He was getting excited about these. Come on, let's see you bite one.
Oh, I've been eating it. Mmm.
So good. That's an amazing way to preserve your tomato. Mm-hmm. A dehydrated snack. Yeah. Do you lose any nutrients in that way? I think some, but very little.
Nice. But I don't know if you do.
And this could store at room temperature now. Yep. You just can break it up and put it in the bag. Dude. I already have a half a gallon jar of this.
Have a look. Yes, Jonah.
Look. Yeah. Oh my word, what'd you do to yourself? Stand back in the light.
String trimming. And then you just do—
you gotta be careful with that thing.
And I wear a Husqvarna helmet, so it just absorbs the heat and the heat stays there.
Okay, what's the verdict, Jason?
Almost done. Almost. I thought I would get done this week, But I'm predicting next week for sure we're gonna finish this thing.
Well, that's good. We'll see you a couple more days next week then. Yeah. Well, what do you lack?
Yeah, I mean, actually it's good how it is, really. Yeah, I guess just to kind of finish it off, frame in the door and paint.
Okay, cool. We cream separated in our new kitchen. It was amazing. We're gonna show you that new kitchen. On Saturday. Saturday still, right? Yes. Yeah, Saturday. What do you need a clipboard for?
So I can write down all my information.
Okay, so we're gonna take— they're gonna take—
they're training me.
I'm getting trained on nighttime chores because Jonah's gonna be gone Sunday night. We rarely take you guys on evening chores, so this is gonna be a real treat. Before we go on these chores, our fall registration for Do It Yourself Abundance member area is closing Sunday at midnight. I just want to get you guys in there. I want everybody to experience as they can. I can only keep it open for so long as I want to focus on creating content, not marketing. I also have limited spots in the premium edition. Guys, we only got— it's like 93% sold out, so I can certainly only take so many in there. I can only adequately uncle so many people and do it well. So check that out, guys. Video library, homesteading experts, me and my friends, do-it-yourself food growing know-how, thriving Facebook community where you feel a little less crazy. Check it out. Closes Sunday just before midnight, 11:59 PM. You're gonna help with chores, Lily? Okay, if Phyllis has with her, her calf, for some reason. I'm driving up on Sunday, coming home Monday. It's not a big deal. She has the calf for the first 24 hours. You might need to milk her that night because she's probably gonna have a lot of milk and colostrum. So she has her calf. So basically I gotta call Ben. So how do you get— she's not flossy, so you might be able to herd her in and then go get her calf. Okay, and set the calf next to the stanchion, milk her, and take her back out. That might be quite— does she look like she's about to have a baby? Well, I'm just looking at her.
Is her udder bagging up?
It looks like it's bagging up. I just told you what you're gonna do. What are you gonna do?
And you can call Ben. And you act like this is just easy. They do everything themselves, so it means like she could have Yeah, it could be tomorrow morning.
If tomorrow morning she hasn't—
I haven't seen any mucus.
Yeah, but you haven't been bringing her in either.
That's true. Hi, Mr. Penguin. Jody, you having to put Penguin up every night? Write that in your notes.
Penguin, put Penguin up.
She's not afraid of this, is she? No.
I want to lick you. When she gets bigger, she's gonna be like a real penguin. Is that how she walks? She's supposed to walk like this, but instead she walks like this. Come on, you Mr. Penguin, get out there.
She's good.
