Is this a tiny cabin?
It's a tiny cabin.
Or is this a cozy cabin?
It's cozy. I look forward to being out of it.
This is the year of snuggles.
I need my crutches. Remember she told me to start using crutches?
Okay, get in. Can you get the man his crutches?
I don't want to know where they are. Neither do I want to find them.
Hip problems are not gonna stop Jonah. We're gonna make this cabin the best we can. We're gonna out these bushes. We get rid of these bushes, we can better enjoy that view. We can get rid of these cedars. Oh my gosh, look what views we're missing. Let's get rid of that cedar. We're missing those views. I don't know, that's the view of the parking lot. Maybe we should keep that one, except we're trying to grow apple trees and we don't want any cedar rust. There's a maple tree we could harvest for our floors. It's kind of ugly. We kind of have some amazing trees. Let's thin it out a little bit. Do have a better yard over here, bigger yard than what we did have. Could we somehow fill in this hole? I know for sure we can get ourselves some more sun by cutting some of these lower branches on this amazing oak tree. And Rebecca has ordered, ever the good mom, some swings. Let's hang swings way up high and let the kids swing way out.
How can we get light on this area? It's always—
well, we're gonna cut this branch. We can cut some of these lower pine branches.
We gotta save some to climb in. That's the best climbing tree.
Okay, I understand. If it were up to Mom and I, we'd get rid of both these trees, but the kids like them and it's the kids' farm. So Mom has put a slack line up. You like that?
Yep.
Can you do it without hanging on? Okay, let me get to the edge. See it?
Nice.
We got the machines. You ready for this, Josiah? Uh-oh, what happened?
Can't get them on.
Is this resting on the ground? It probably should be resting on their own.
I had to bring it without them hooking up.
Oh, that's probably the problem. We want the bucket to lift me up the chainsaw.
Mama wants to rip this out. This has just been deteriorated.
Okay, she wants to dig this up.
Josiah, no, no, that's a truck loader job.
I don't know about that.
No, she also wants to take the topsoil off because that's what the graders did when they did our gravel bond over there, and it's had less grass.
Josiah is the excavator and Jonah's the truck loader. Josiah's gonna attempt just pulling this cedar up. I go to get the chainsaw, come back, he's pulled out everything in the front yard. Holy smokes! Beck, what do you think? Already so much more sunlight. Get those pine trees next, shall we? Jonah having a blast. The thing's handy.
Little bit I left is throwing wood.
More another pile, cuz we're going to get these pine trees. Going for that cedar too. Well, it's a lot more open and nice, but that means we got to keep a tidy porch. Let's get this one. I'm going to have to cut it because it's up in that Electrical wire. Nice view of the hog house. Let's see if we can get a nice view of the people barn.
Ran out of fuel.
Next up, a maple tree. We'll turn that into flooring for the Holla howl! Jonah says don't saw it down yet. Josiah wants to wait to push it over with the mini X. He'll have to dig around a bit. Never mind, Josiah says cut the tree down first and then he can get that out the stump easier. Snagged my saw. Oh wait, wait, wait, it's pretty much through I think. See if he can't push it over. Oh boy, come over here and push it.
Trying to smash the saw.
Hold on, maybe I can get my saw out. I would go do that.
I won't either.
Come around and push here. I tried to get my— the machine out of there and leave the blade, but it was too tight. I couldn't do it.
Nice, nice!
Look at that move! Oh, there went my saw!
Nope, it made it.
And I thought it was gonna smash my saw, but it didn't. And there's the view now. Oak tree looks nice, the people barn looks nice, the holler house looks nice. We're gonna enjoy living over here. We're gonna make the best of it. One cool thing about it is a whole different perspective on the farm. Like, we've never lived on this land and looked out this way, so this part of the farm will be near and dear to our heart more than it was before. That's special. I've got to tell you guys about this perishable. Sent overnight from Colorado. If this doesn't tell you I'm madly in love with my wife of 22 years, I don't know what will. I heard Rebecca talking about this gluten-free organic pizza crust, which we are gluten-free and organic, by Italia. We looked at Whole Foods. We don't have it at our particular Whole Foods. Call them up. Can you get it? No, they can't get it. So here, look at these bonuses they sent us. This is for baking them on. Put the parchment paper over this and then bake them on this. As you can see, they have a crust already made, frozen. That was going to be exorbitant. That was going to be like $400 shipping, but oh my word, that would have been awesome. We have a second awesome. Help me open this, Henrik. Here, I'll cut it and you rip it. Okay, okay, rip it. What we have is dough ready to go. So at least we don't have to make that, we just have to knead it out and go.
We're just doing approximate measurements, 14-ish feet, and then let's walk down there.
We ripped out all our bushes, so we need to get new ones, new ones that don't grow as high.
Okay, then I was just thinking I might put like a butterfly bush back there but let this go to grass.
Okay, hopefully you have some sort of vision so this doesn't take 2 hours. This is Landa's plants, her fave. You gotta get in the car seat, bro. Taking the old truck because she's gonna fill up that truck bed full of plants, I'm sure. It's like we've been celebrating your birthday all week. It's her birth week, y'all. We could have done this inside. We're sitting here in the truck waiting, waiting for you to get done nursing. You got a little— little briar in his foot. We had to take it out.
Hey, quote, quote, favorite place.
Mom's glowing.
Just playing.
Look at her glow. You're a crazy plant lady. Why do you like plants so much?
They bring me such joy.
She didn't make it very far, folks, already. Spotting some plants.
Well, I think I like these plants. I think I like these in the front. These— oh, this is good purple flowers. Okay, like I want to do— I don't want to just do green.
We already found our stuff.
This is summer and fall. Okay, seasons of interest. I guess I need to find some things that are winter too.
Are these rhododendron-looking things winter? How can you tell? You would like that one. It's $100.
Stop it.
Hey, look at this.
I need to get one of those flower baskets.
Okay, pick one out for her. Now, will she actually get one she likes. You picked up two? Mom's particular. She is hard to shop for.
Maybe she'll want blue flowers.
Where do you see some blue ones?
Like that color.
Okay, you could try. You want me to grab them? Here's some that are easier to reach. They're sort of purple. There you go.
I want to get her—
which one you picking out?
That.
This one?
Yeah.
What do you see, Henry?
There you go.
Look at this, a water line. With a drip in every single one of these plants. I can see it. This is a plant lady's dream come true.
We should get the white ones for Mama.
How many are we getting?
3.
I thought we were getting 2, but we need more than 2. All right, maybe y'all are crazy plant ladies in training.
You want to help me carry this? Yeah. Careful, heavy, heavy.
Mom's way ahead of us. This weed fabric down is nice. I always have it so very nice here. That's why you like it so much. They're selling 10-foot tall trees over there. Which one did he get?
I'm pretty sure that's a hollyhock.
Hey, did you like the ones they picked out, babe? Yeah, they're hanging up. Yeah. Would you have picked out anything different?
We can't get one before the back porch.
These may be some winter hardy stuff. Or did you find some over there?
No, I'm looking. I found one down there that was year-round.
These are a form of rhododendron. Can you cut them back or do they just get crazy big? I don't know. Mr. Google Pants says 5 to 8 feet tall, 5 to 6 feet wide. We found some that are yellow all year round.
I'm gonna look up some other ones and they don't get crazy big.
And Henry's run off. Stay over here, my man. They had to go to the bathroom. Did you guys go?
No, we gotta find it.
Okay, come on. There it is, y'all. Go ahead. Back at the pigs. Maybe she'd like that big chicken. Are you really buying a boxwood?
I'm not a big boxwood fan.
Pop would be cheering up in heaven.
I know.
You just got to keep them under control.
That's the problem. I don't, I don't want to keep anything under control. I just wanted to keep itself under control.
We got enough kids to keep under control.
Oh, not that one, not that one.
Nope, that one hurts. These look like they stay under control. Is that a cedar? That's what we had.
It's a cypress. Goodness, this wind. Why is it every time we come here it's like this?
This is epic wind. I see where you going to. That's what you're going to get her?
Yeah.
Did she say okay?
She said sure.
Are you sure you're not getting that for yourself? Yeah, that horse planter.
What else does she want?
You're also looking at a rabbit planter.
Maybe flowers.
This is an epiphyllia. Is that what you called it?
Okay, that stays green too. Yeah, that stays green. This stays yellow, and you can cut them back. Yes, just do green, yellow, green, yellow.
We have 21 feet on one side and 14.
What's the spacing they need to be set up?
That's saying the tag. Okay, 4 feet wide, 3 feet high. Okay, let's do it. So get a couple of those.
Okay, get Lily, you get to grab a couple.
We need to get another car.
So 21 feet divided by 6, 4 on one side, 14 on the other, so 3 on the other, so get 7. You help us carry one, Mr. Henry.
Here's a nice one.
The green ones? Okay. And a rhododendron next to the side with parking lot. Truck again. That's not a slide.
Try it, try it, Henry.
That's a sticky slide. What's that slide? He's doing it again. It's concrete. You're gonna wear out your pants. Now that's not too crazy.
Okay, and she's bringing me a butterfly bush. Okay, and then I'm gonna get some little flowers that will grow.
Okay. Can't get in that truck.
How do the lights work?
Hi, Henry!
I guess you can get in it, but there's not a seat or anything.
It's just a hole.
Your turn. Can you reach up? There he is. We're leaving. I made out all right. How much was it?
$6.20.
You only forked a full one. Uh-oh, we're not getting the pigs. Put the pigs back. There's a tractor, Henry.
He went crazy.
He likes these ones out in the field. You actually want to sit on it? Okay, we needed a truck bed after all. Hey, go get your little shovel. If you don't believe me, the wind's crazy. It blew Randolph's trailer off of the road and into the garlic patch. How are we going to get that out of there? You don't want to drive the truck on your garden. We're just going to compost around the plants, so we don't need too much. If you can get those locusts on there, put it on there like this. And what do you say we drop one in?
Sure.
1, 2, 3.
Get the other thing too.
Dig the holes for it. Tell me how far to take this, babe. Just do whatever you want.
Okay, I don't need too much. Thanks.
Wow, that was wet.
That good? Yeah.
Randolph twisted that trailer out somehow and he's backing up to it now. How'd you do that? He's making muscles. Looks so good. Boys will be here shortly with wood chips. We have one extra. So which ones do you want planted right here? Kind of like the yellow one.
These three.
Okay, because that one's kind of the same. Yeah, there you go. Good boy, planting the ones in containers. That's good. Then, then him pulling out Mom's plant— he pulled out that one, didn't he, Beck? She was thrilled.
He was thinking he's helping.
Look at this, guys. Organic pepperoni. Where did you find that? You ordered online, but we couldn't find it forever, then it just popped up.
I periodically Google for it.
Okay, what do you think, Josiah? Scoop it or just twist it and put it over it a little bit more?
You want me to? It might tear it up.
Okay, then just leave it. Well, we're gonna, we're gonna ruffle this up afterwards. Is it our lucky day, Rebecca? Way down here, babe.
Hey!
Look at this!
I know, doesn't it look amazing?
Look at this!
We've got flowers up here. Petite bushes.
Some bushes, but we still have a nice view. Nothing's blocking the view.
Yeah, we'd still have to plant a bush over here and over there, and then I forgot to buy one for that side.
Wow, Lily, you outdid yourself. What'd you make us tonight?
I made potatoes, beets, onions, and carrots.
Hey, now that it's evening This is a better time to shoot this. Isn't that charming? We even cleaned up the porch.
It feels so, like, refreshing.
Yeah, it makes the yard more enjoyable. Today's birthday present to your mother. Look at these boulders they brought up. You guys had a good time moving those?
It was okay.
Look, one, it's still not gonna block somebody from driving here. We could put a locust post here or something that could be removable. 1, 2, 3, 4. 5. This is your birthday present today.
Oh, fun!
This is like the 7 days of Rebecca.
7 days of Rebecca.
Another birthday gift for the mom. We're re-graveling the driveway. And on the 6th day of her birthday— look at that rock! Where'd you get that, bro? Is this the grilling patio?
No, if we bring it closer to here, then we could put the grill and then you could step.
Is the other side flatter? If you digged it down, then we could have this at ground level. Flip it too and let's see if the other side is flatter. What do you think, Dan? Would be handy to have some boy machine operator.
Absolutely, man. This is, this is incredible that they can get out here and do that. Like, they're not playing video games. Yeah, they're not, you know, doing— sitting around doing nothing. They're out being so productive and learning.
Look at this. Is it more flat?
No, I think that's about the same.
Get it out of the way so you can dig a hole for it.
Too deep on this side. You need to go way over.
It's got a director. What do you think all these track tractor's right in your front yard. Good job. That's gonna be where I put the griddle or the smoker. Hey, look at this! Who did this? Jonah! Gravel for a parking lot. We can park the truck and the Suburban in front of the shed. On the 8th day of Rebecca's birthday celebration, this is actually it. Somebody has decorated. Jonah has cleaned up the house. Is this supposed to be hanging?
Yeah, Jonah ripped it down.
Uh-oh, in a protest? You don't want Mom's cake? Okay, here we go. How's that? Lily's chocolate cake. You making the icing now?
Yeah, part of it's done.
Nice.
Mama approving so far? Yeah, her heart's into it. Her heart's into it. How'd you get this dye?
Uh, freeze-dried strawberries.
We'll just add it.
They need a lot more than that. Just doing a small bit at a time so it doesn't go too bright. Yeah, look how it's pinking up. I'm gonna need the whole thing back. Look, I think she needs to make Make more, Beck. Look, this is your coloring. Are these the freeze-dried strawberries?
I don't want to use them all.
I need to actually—
oh really?
Just a little bit. Good job, girl.
We're gonna go finish Mom's complete yard transformation. Ready for this maple to be gone?
I am.
You think we can save any of it for floors, or is it rotten? Definitely rotten here. But what about here? This, this is rotten.
I don't know.
I'm afraid this is rotten. The plan is— oh look, Henry got in there with him. That's good. I'm gonna work up these branches. He can pile it with the, the mini axe. He can help hold this up while I saw this into firewood. The chainsaw and the mini axe partners clean up your yard, baby. Look, Beck, it's only rotten at the bottom. This was too hard to saw through. I'm gonna— I'm gonna say this is good. Uh, never mind. Jonah insisted it's not a maple. He's right, that's an oak. We're just gonna haul that off for another day of sawing it up because it's oak, man, it's, it's hard to get through. I don't know if my saw is the right saw for that job. Perfect for that stuff. She's already got me on different duties. I didn't know about— where are you putting these?
Just got her right here.
What are you gonna do with those rocks though?
I'm just gonna put the rocks like along this.
Okay, well that's gonna require a shovel. That's nice. I do have a shovel right there. Uh-oh, you gotta rock there. You got a rock foundation here. In order to get that in there, that's gonna have to be about right here. I did find We got some tin snips and they're working nicely.
And if we want another extension, you can buy another extension.
Okay, put your other rocks down. You need help with lunch?
Uh, sure.
The steak's in the oven. Nice. These are going. How are you feeling?
My leg's hurting today.
Let's see that cake. Oh my gosh, really? Has Mom seen it?
Yeah.
Oh my You did so good. I am so proud of you. That just makes my heart so happy. All right, what you got here, babe?
Well, what do you think? Does it look all right?
Yeah, I was just thinking covered up our downspout with it.
You don't see it, so it's not actually resting on this. It's— this is free. I've made it so that it's not crushing.
You did this one too? Yeah, yeah, it's tidy.
And then I have these left over. I was maybe going to place them around the big rock.
One butterfly bush. I hear the smoke alarm going. Must be burn it up cooking show in there. Burn it up cooking show for sure. You raking with Mom?
Yeah.
I was like, what's the deal with these like clay-like rocks? And he comes and he goes and he's like throws it over into that pile. Is this okay, or should we put it closer?
Closer. It doesn't get that big.
I'd put it right here.
Now we just want to scratch up— no, just very little. See if it works. Yeah, there you go. That's all I want. It's gotten so compact from people driving on it over the years. We're gonna— there you go. Makes it ready for planting grass. That's it, just do a drag on it. There you go. Thought it was gonna be a half a day, ended up being a full day, but we've got us a nice yard, don't we, Beck? Let's get some after shots. Everything we've accomplished in a week on this yard. We're about to cook up a storm. Becky's making pizza. You're gonna help?
Mm-hmm.
Even on your birthday?
I will help.
You didn't have to make the cake.
I did not have to make the cake.
You're gonna crush your own—
I don't have to really make it either.
You're gonna crush your own basil and you're putting it in the tomato sauce. It's a super simple recipe, but it's just strained tomatoes.
I do crushed and strained tomatoes, and I do garlic, basil, um, lemon juice or red wine vinegar, and salt. And then just let it sit.
Italia pizza crust. How's it turning out, babe?
I think good. I'm gonna— we're gonna stick it in and do a trial run, see what happens to it.
The boys want to know if it thickens up. They're, they're like deep dish pizza guys, I guess. Y'all are Chicago.
Why?
What's the difference?
Mom and I are New York. She's getting serious, folks. Getting the apron on. It's going good. We heat them up in the oven just a little bit, set them out to dry on top of little grates here to cool. It's not dry.
And then we'll top them and get them back in the oven.
We're serious about some pizza. Lily is grating the mozzarella. She's about some sweet tea too. We gotta have some of that before the party. And we've got organic pepperoni. Mom made a salad. We're getting ready to start decorating. Waiting, putting the toppings on. See his legs too? One of them is so much thinner than the other.
This is his socket.
So why does he hold his hip? Because look, his hip is way up there.
I physically can't push it down.
I've tried.
So it should be in here. Oh, it's supposed to be. Look, look at this side. See how that's inside the socket? It's like over here.
You can see it's just more comfortable for him hold his hip way up.
No, it's not him doing it. If it was down here like this, it wouldn't be jacked up.
What? Oh, bubbles. That's primo, Beck. Has it been a good birthday week plus a day?
Oh yes.
Where's your tea?
I'll go get it.
Inside? This is inside of our outside. This is outside of our inside. So let's see you taste this crust all the way from Colorado. Look at this.
Is it good?
It is so good. You could fool a glutenier.
Does it taste as good as it looks?
And we didn't have to make the dough. Let it cool off and then you can get it.
Oh wow, this thing smells really good, right?
Wow. Whole Foods East Coast got to get their act together and get this pizza over here. I'm gonna have to go into the store and be like, we'd have pizza every month. This birthday week has been a lot of relational gifts, but we did get you one gift.
Thank you.
I know it's actually physical. You do?
Yeah, because I asked for it.
Yeah, but you don't know what kind. What do you think it is?
It's a wind chime, and I know what kind because I picked it out.
No, you did. Oh, you did? I mean, pretty much, because I thought Josiah picked it out. I did. Well, I hope you like it. Well, we got the best one for you on Amazon. Is that what you wanted?
Yeah, it's fine. I picked out a really big one like this. I didn't want a dinky donk one.
This is definitely not dinky donk. Look at that!
You said you wanted the biggest one.
That's not dinky donk. Jonah, put it down on the other end, on the very end. Wow, that's, that's pretty, that's pretty amazing. It's a little loud.
It is loud.
We might have to put it, we might have to hang it somewhere.
Put it off in the tree somewhere.
Yeah, your ears probably Thank you, Gideon.
You crazy. No, just normal wind chime for her. She's gonna have church bells right here next to our door. Hey, it is so beautiful.
She did such a nice job.
It's all backlit right there. Let's get right here. Wait, are we gonna light it up? No lighting it up.
We don't want to be canceled.
Okay.
Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday Happy birthday to you.
I think Henry thinks everyone's singing to him.
Oh, is it about you, Henry? I feel like you should blow out your candles, but what'd you wish for?
A good birthday.
Last time I wished for a horse.
Oh, you didn't get one?
I'm gonna wish for—
the year's not over yet.
I'm gonna wish for a go-kart.
What are you gonna wish for? What are you gonna wish for, Jonah?
To get better.
What are you gonna wish for, Henry?
Ready for some cake?
Yeah. When I brought it out, he was like, yeah, yeah, it's been cold too.
I love it.
Papa likes it.
Lovely cold cake. Can you handle that big piece this time? Yeah, pick the biggest fork there is because he's a baby, you know, and then you just use his hands.
See, that's nice. Cut yourself.
See how it's like—
give one to Papa.
Is it too loud?
Not yet.
Okay.
On the wedding day, like, how's the cake?
It's good.
Is this a dream realized? I know, your daughter making your birthday cake homemade. Uh-oh, running out of steam.
This is what happens when you go low carb and then you—
and then you go on carbs.
And then you feel like you're gonna die.
You are a lightweight.
Well, I have been informed that even though we are, we still like, me and the other kids still eat carbs, we don't eat as many carbs as most people.
Birthday blessing!
She's a good mom. She likes to buy stuff and that's it.
Put it on her tombstone.
Likes to buy stuff. For them.
Well, you said for her.
Say what I told you to tell her.
Mama boobies.
That's a fitting one from him. Mama boobies.
I like Mama because because she's nice and she buys me stuff when I need, and yeah. Oh, and she takes me horse riding lessons.
I like Mama because she takes me places and she brushes my hair and—
Is that true?
Yes, nice hair.
And she's a good mom. I like Mama because she's nice, she's caring, She's loving, and she's been helping me through my really hard time.
Yeah, you two bond, huh?
Yeah, we spent a lot of time together.
Special time together going to all these appointments.
Lots of time.
My big thought for you this birthday season— I know, right?
It's all birthday week. We can just make the whole month of May my birthday.
You know, we're celebrating you. You're getting older.
Yeah.
And I say I'm happy to be getting old with you.
I'm happy to be getting old with you too.
And change all all the time, and we met, we met when we were 16.
Yeah.
And every iteration just keeps getting better and better.
I've caught up to you now. We're the same age until you get older in October.
Yeah, you hate that. You love it when my birthday comes and I'm older. You're the old man, and you're the young spry woman.
That's right.
We have 44 more.
Oh, more. Let's go for 50 at least.
