Chapters
Word on the street, there might be a baby lamb out there. Did anybody go check yet, Josiah? Is there any baby lamb? I don't think so. Oh, we have a dilemma. Teddy wants to go out, but it's raining. It's 25 minutes till Lily's lesson, online lesson. I would go out and help them and just come back at 8 to set her lesson up, but Teddy needs to stay inside and he would bark.
Mom had a terrible night's sleep with Snowball last night. Having some breast pain. And so, she's been up with him a lot and needs to sleep.
So I'm gonna need to stand guard to make sure nobody wakes her up and get Lily on her lesson at 8.
Can we see any lambs?
I don't think so. Hey, were there any baby sheep? No. None?
Well, it looked like one was giving birth to it.
Mm-hmm. It's that time. It's almost the 17th. Would be 5 months they'd be pregnant if they got pregnant right away. So it could be any day now. I got Lily on her lesson.
Mom's still asleep.
Yes. All right, we'll just kind of find something to do until we can wake her up, and then I can go help them on chores. It's pouring the rain, but It don't matter, they're under the pole barn. I wish I was down there with them.
Let's check, let's check, see how baby is. I don't know how Rebecca's gonna sleep through that. She's so enthusiastic with her lesson.
Okay, they're up. There you guys are, getting rest.
We are. Okay, it was a rough night.
You feeling any better?
Yeah, I think the clogged duct is getting out.
Okay, good. So we don't want that to turn to mastitis. No. How do you prevent that?
I have a strong history of mastitis. That's not good.
How do you prevent it?
Um, you just have to drain— drain it and massage the sore spot, which is very painful.
Are you trying to wake him up?
Yes, I am actually. I want to. Nurse them. And I also want to change his diaper.
That'll be good because you guys are wanting to see— somebody asked for the scoop on cloth diapers. Basically, with cloth diapers, it's really cool because you never have to buy another diaper. Buy them once, never have to do it again. Well, avoid all the trash and throwaway. This is his dirty diaper. You do have to buy more diapers. I mean, you don't have to go to the grocery store and buy packages of diapers. This is a newborn size. There are different sizes. This is Game Changer. I don't think we had this when we did cloth diapers before. You put it in a chute and it's kind of like seals back on itself so there's no smell, and it looks like you have excess from the bottom. You can unzip it and get them out. Just— that's almost time for your lesson. Are you ready? Now what are you doing back up? Are you guys done milking? Well, I can go down there now. Okay. Okay. All right. Yeah, because your lesson. So I'm gonna go find out what's going on. Okay. B-roll in downtown Asheville, and then the hardware store, and then Later that afternoon, chopping wood and more B-roll.
Is that really what you're doing?
Yeah. That's what we're filming today. Another film shoot for Rooted today. What's been really cool about this project is Ben, co-director, is so good. I just trust him. I just let him go with it. I don't know what we're doing. Why am I walking with one boot on and and it being half on carrying the other boot. All right, uh, there we go. I think I'm of that mind of, hey look, if you find some talent, get them on your team, trust them, and let them go with it.
What?
It does not feel warm enough for a lightning thunderstorm. Let's go check on how they're doing doing with the chores. And let's revisit the cloth diaper thing. Cloth diapers are definitely not what they used to be, and they're so easy. Hey, no babies yet? No babies. How's it going out here?
Good. Maybe you can check this one. I milk this.
Okay.
But look like again blocked, I think, or I don't know if it's empty.
Okay, I almost done it here. Once you finish out those, I'll work on that dead one. Yeah, see about this teeth. Oh, it's— there's some coming out. Oh no, it's kind of clogged. All right, I got her milked out. Thanks, Haroon. Thanks, uh, Jonah. I'll get the milk up. Might as well grab as much as we can. On our way inside, and Jonah has got to show you guys his, his camera boom. I like how you blended just scrap wood with such nice technology. You've got a screen. Yeah, so you can see what that camera is doing.
Yeah.
And can you move the camera? So the camera's on a gimbal, so he can move the boom around and the camera keeps the same angle. This is kind of cool. It can go this way. Jonah, can it go this way?
Yeah.
And then it can go that way. Oh wow. Okay. And then he's got this cord all the way to a monitor. I think you're being inspired by Ben and his crew. What do you say? Is that kind of cool to have those guys around?
Yeah, it is.
They told him about this. I don't think you knew about the monitor.
I did because I saw it on their cameras. Oh yeah, because this runs off your Canon batteries.
Oh, it does?
Yes, it just—
oh, you don't need a plug? Oh cool.
So it goes off thing. All right, that was really cool when I found that out.
What's in the toolbox?
Rocks.
Oh, that's to weigh it down. Okay, he's just got this on a swivel, a caster wheel.
Remember that you threw those in the metal?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, because we just took the wheels off of them. Hey, you didn't screw to this bucket, did you? Oh, you screwed into a food-grade bucket!
I just found it down here.
What's the big idea?
It had tools, it has my stuff in it.
Alright, alright. Hey, let me get the card from you guys, put it in there, and you'll get that camera view. Alright, Jonah, that's pretty cool. You bring the other bucket up, okay? What are you guys doing in there?
We are crouching.
You staying warm over there? Yeah.
Huh?
Your hands cold? I just had the thought, Ben's interviewing Grandma and Big Daddy today, no problem inside. But we are filming outside for the wood cutting scene and for the, uh, downtown. Oh, you know, we could maybe stack wood downstairs or something. That might not be a bad idea. Look who I got! And you're happy this morning because you've gained like 20%. You're fat and happy. Hey, it's okay. I think you might need a diaper change.
Mom's in the bath.
We're giving her a little break this morning because she's gonna be on this afternoon, me being in the film and everything. So see, I took this, what you call, cover off. It's okay. Now we've got him on a dry diaper. It's the same thing. We're just buttoning it up. We're gonna get you. And just like that, he's kind of started to slow down. Was it that? Was your diaper a little wet? We're gonna have to address these diapers a little bit later. For now, we're going to downtown Asheville. Got Jonah with me. He's interested in the filming stuff, so this is homeschool lesson for the day. What Ben wants with me downtown, the shot downtown, I have no idea. But it'd be interesting to see what he comes up with. Guys, so sorry, so sorry. Totally forgot to get you. Here. Basically, we went on top of that parking garage and took some shots and had these amazing old buildings in the background. I was just looking around, B-roll shots. Don't know what he has in mind for it. Can't wait to see though. That's what's making this, this, this so fun. Like, I'm not in complete control and this incredibly talented artist craftsman is doing the work of putting this piece together. Next up, hardware store. Let's go. Well, we're at our destination number 2. I did get a picture of them filming and thankfully you came with me because They wanted me. Uh, yeah, but here we are at an old school hardware store. I'm back home. Dropped Jonah off at Grandma's. He just loves to watch them film. Let's go check in on everybody. Hey everybody!
Hello, hello!
How was you, Henry? He's good.
He just woke up. He just woke up.
He's been asleep this whole time. All right. I need to nurse. Shelly's excited to see me.
I'm excited too.
Indian Wednesday on a Tuesday! We figured we got the film crew here tonight— today. Let's give them some Indian, and they are very excited. This is a nice— everybody hugging me. This is so nice. Oh, thank you, guys. Oh, is this your lotion continued? It is from yesterday. Hey, you gotta cooperate. Are you searching? You want the Bobo? He's searching.
He is.
This woman is up and at 'em. He knows when he's been passed off now. He knows. Come on, you used to like me. You used to like me. We'll talk more about these diapers, but let's get him happy. Oh, let's get some laundry done. Let's see how this bag works, Becky. And I noticed you do like top loaders for doing Uh, yes. Tell me why is that? Uh, for doing cloth diapers.
Because then it immerses in the water.
Yeah.
As opposed to front loaders that do not immerse in the water and you basically don't get clean clothes.
Okay.
If you have a front loader, I'm sorry.
Now this is the first time we've used this.
This is the first time.
We've used the bags. They were kind of lined with like a waterproof.
Well, this is, uh, that's this waterproof.
It is waterproof. So they've improved, um, cloth diaper since we last did it.
Correct.
We did it with every child but Gideon.
We did do it a little bit with Gideon, but I had a front loader.
Yeah, Gideon kind of threw us for a loop. So, but this is a little harder than just throwing a diaper in the trash. It is, but it's not really if you think about— you have to go buy diapers.
Well, and there's these—
you buy them once and it's over.
Yeah.
Oh, there was a— actually, I put a wipe in there. I could not find it.
It's right here.
Okay, good.
There's another one. So, okay, so I'm— you don't have to rinse this.
Oh really? Like you're not— well, I mean, that was a nightmare. I'm gonna run, um, once they start eating food though, you gotta rinse it off in the toilet, correct?
I'm going to run a short load, like a pre-rinse basically.
Okay, um, on these, I don't know if we have it on this toilet, but we have a— they make a diaper rinser that you connect to that. And it makes real nice because you can rinse it off right above the toilet. Me no mama holding you down. Me no mama holding you down. He's in that stage where he still sleeps a lot, but it's much lighter, so he gets easily woken up.
Breast milk poop is water soluble, so you don't have to rinse it, which is nice. Um, and that's it.
What brand is this?
So this is, um, Green Mountain Diapers.
Um, and it's what you call an insert and a cover.
It's a Workhorse diaper. So these are, these are called, these are fitteds.
Yeah, these are cool. They have this little flap for extra absorption.
Yeah.
And then, um, so is this a cover?
It's not, it's a, it's a wet bag. Okay, so this is, this is a wool cover for when he's a little bit older.
Yeah, so that wet bag you would take with you on a diaper bag. Yes, that will go in And then he's actually—
I have him in a wool cover right now.
Okay.
I, I tested them and they didn't need to be lanolized, so I went ahead and started using them.
Look at this guy. Supper is going to be amazing tonight. Chicken from the land. What's it called? Cooking with Arun Kumar.
Yes.
What's it called?
This chicken? Yeah, it's like, uh, it's kind of like a chicken tikka masala style.
Okay.
And I have like a little bit toasted this one because we eat always same, so like just to have like different, you know, flavor.
You got, uh, dal. I'm telling you, there's so many people in this of us right now. Thank you, Arun.
