We’ve been Eating Breakfast All Wrong

Justin and Rebecca eat breakfast at first light instead of after chores, prioritizing protein to stabilize blood sugar and manage cortisol spikes. They prepare farm-fresh yogurt with peach-maple puree, meat-scrap broth, and blueberry popsicles while tending cows, chickens, and their homestead.

Happy day. Trying something a little different today. It's still dark. Instead of rushing out to do chores right away at first light, we're gonna cook breakfast at first light. That is a— is it gonna be a peach puree? Is that what you call that? We're gonna be cooking down some frozen peaches and some maple syrup. That's gonna be a Topping for yogurt. Sorry, not sorry for the red lighting here. I know it's awful lighting, but working on our circadian rhythm. We don't want that blue light in our eyes first thing in the morning. We don't want to fool our body thinking it's noon. We want it to think, okay, we're just starting. The day is just starting. Okay, we wouldn't want that blue light before we get the blue light from the sun itself. Let's start breaking in some other things besides breakfast. This is meat scraps from the broth, the sheep broth. Let's start out by being a little more picky. Most of the weird stuff we put back in the broth and we'll have a nice gelatinous broth. Can you guys see without that orange light? I'm just gonna turn it off. I'm gonna be better. Come on, it's time to eat. It's a little easier to get up to, right? 7 o'clock. Come on. This is very different for me, and change is always hard. We have been doing first light out there milking the cows, getting the most important thing harvested. Before calves break over, but the cows have been pretty much behaving themselves lately, so can it be put off a little bit? It's actually the most important thing is our health, and if eating first thing in the morning is really good for us, that's what we need to be doing, and everything else needs to be working around that. It may be that we need to start eating while it's still dark. I hope that's not the case because sleep is also important. Beautiful one. You started this, okay? You were doing this. You figured this out, and we were eating within an hour or two, and I thought you were crazy, but I've slowly come around. And then, and then when, when Troy and Tara, Tara were here, some of our health role models wouldn't eat breakfast with us because we ate at 8:30, and they said we ate first thing in the morning.
I know, they said we eat as soon as we get up, so I was like, yeah, I know about that. But it's—
tell me about— tell everybody about that. Why is that better?
So when you're waking up, you're getting, um, like your stress hormones are coming up as well to wake you up. That's like cortisol spike, correct? So this is normal, this is normal biology, but then eating brings them down, I guess, into a a better state of where they're supposed to be, and it helps to dampen the cortisol spike and make— because I guess a lot of our, our health problems come from too much cortisol in the body, which we know you have that. Like, I haven't necessarily been tested for that, but especially like last September when they took your— when they did your lab work, you did have too much cortisol in your blood. That was, that was something that I do distinctly remember. So, if this can help to bring that down to a better place and it releases, I want to say dopamine and things like that. I can't remember exactly what Tara was saying. But it just made a lot of sense, and I was like, okay, maybe we really need to do this as a family.
Yes.
The only way to make me eat breakfast really early in the morning— how? Let me do a horse show every weekend. I'll wake up at 4 o'clock.
It's a little hard. No. Come on, buddy. Can you eat this early?
Too much.
Now let me ask you this. So I'm all about keeping that blood sugar level, and I'm reading and learning that it's the spikes that is the inflammation. Uh, not necessarily— that means limiting your carbs and figure out where your spikes are. But so you couldn't just eat a bunch of cereal and milk. No, because then that's going to carry the spikes.
Correct. No, you're wanting to eat, you know, protein and things of that nature. But then also she was saying it is good to have some carbs in there, which I, like, you know Being 100% no carb is not good for you, which we know.
It needs to be protein-based. Yes. Get in there while it's fresh.
Yeah, so yogurt, um, things of that nature.
You— we—
clabber, kefir, those are all going to be, um—
I want you to try everything, okay? Even if you don't like it. I— we have a— and we can do this from farm too. Huge yogurt. Okay, a little bit of peach.
I'm not a big peach person.
I know, but you're gonna do it. It's medicine. It sweetens that yogurt.
I know, but my thought was, is that maybe—
grab some of this.
I know, but I would try it, but maybe not because I wonder if I really don't like it.
Okay, well do less yogurt, right? Do this little bowl. Yeah, right? Is that what you're getting at? Yeah, it's just— this is hardest. It's gonna be This is so we don't have to have just sausage and eggs every morning, you know. These are other farm fresh things.
I'm like trying to get this— I like most fruit.
So this is the sweetener too, it's got maple syrup in it.
Peaches isn't my favorite.
So that's how you— I know, and that we're not gonna have peaches every morning. We've got strawberries, we've got blueberries. You could just do plain yogurt. Get a yogurt, put some peaches in it, Josiah. That's your sweetener. Whether you want to or not, let's go. Yeah, yeah, you might love it. Put it up here. This is meat that would have normally gone to the animals. Here, put this up here. Just put it up here. I won't put it on the eggs. Come on. It's gonna be an adjustment. What is it? It's just meat bits, salt, pepper. Yeah, I didn't want to call them scraps. That doesn't sound good. Bits doesn't sound a whole lot better. Talk to me about this experience making it, getting up early before everybody and making it.
Terrible. You want to eat breakfast?
Your first instinct is you would rather go do chores and then come do breakfast?
Well, no, it's just getting up is terrible.
Oh. So you do like eating. Yeah.
Cause then I don't have to be like, if I sleep in and then I have to do my chores and then cook breakfast and breakfast.
Yeah, that's kind of neat. Henry, talk to me about eating first thing in the morning. Are you hungry? Oh yeah? You're always hungry. I think the kids don't have any problem eating first thing in the morning. Does this help you do your chores happier? I don't know. I see you already ate the roast. What's going on? I threw it in the pig bucket. Little beets.
Why are you going— I don't want that.
This is a break-in. Have you tried yours yet? Eat it while it's hot. I'm not trying it. Jonah, this is just meat off the bones. I got rid of all the— I put all the— I'm trying to eat this sausage. Hey, but imagine this, you could go train now and we're all on the same schedule. We didn't make two breakfasts, everybody eats at the same time.
I think it's a wonderful idea.
She likes to eat before she trains and she likes to train in the morning. Get in, no sir.
Go help him, Papa.
He got just eggs. Come over here. It's important to eat breakfast like a king, y'all, whether you feel like it or not. All right, you got your yogurt, you get your meat bits. One tip I have for you is things that aren't appetizing, eat those first. Just how you're gonna eat your bone roast. Uh, that went terrible. We only went downhill from there. It's definitely gonna take some getting used to, but I think it is better because we all eating together, we all get it out of the way. There's no separate breakfast going, there's no stop during the middle of the chores and get it done. Uh, kids feel better because they need the food before they get going so they don't get hangry. He wants chocolate chips in his yogurt, and we're just— hey, we're just getting away from that. Honey in the yogurt, peach preserves in the yogurt. Okay, and you know there's sweetener in the fruit preserves. The, the peaches, we put maple syrup in it. Blueberries, strawberries all get a little bit of maple syrup. Dates. Dates. Yeah, those dates that are done, you finish those dates and then I don't know if we're getting them anymore. Yeah, it's real.
Those are the big bad of them.
If having those treats prevent you from eating the real meals, then we might not do it. But if you can have some treats every once in a while and still eat the real meals, we're good. The boys are back. I was hoping to go check up on the milk and the cows. I've never seen so much poop on a cow's udder this morning. Oh really? It was so bad. I cleaned it all off. I had these like all the dirty rags that we had, and then her calf wouldn't nurse because Because of the stench. After the milking? After I milked her. After I cleaned it really well. Wait, did you clean it really well? She would be a calf wet nurse, yeah. Okay. I guess because of how it tasted, I guess it got soaked in. Is that the problem?
Oh, you know what? I wonder if you never shut that.
I did. I shut it. You did? Yeah.
Well, let's try it.
Oh, it is colored. Okay, so look, they're backing a lot of milk. Look at the color difference. See, hers is white, mine is creamier. That one's vanilla, right?
Yeah, honey's creamy.
No, honey's creamier. Really? Yeah, I think it was the other one.
She's in her lactation. Yeah, somebody gives a lot of cream.
Oh my gosh, what? What? This is no milk going through. Well, sometimes the flap gets on it. See, I don't like stew just in general, you know that, so It's tough for me to eat the stew in the morning. We need to—
this is a good thing for us to eat first thing.
Did you eat the stew, Mom? Maybe I'll go to the thing.
It's not my favorite.
Maybe I'll go to the co-op and buy myself some bagels. It's healthy and it's just better. Just, we don't have two transitions. See, when we have breakfast 8, 9 o'clock, we we're transitioning from chores, doing breakfast, then going back out. Here we're in the house and then we only have to transition out. There's a lot of time killing transitions. Should we get a 50-gallon barrel and put a nipple in it and feed the, the milk to the pigs? Just let them have all they can eat? Yeah, just do like whey and water. Yeah, it's hard to keep dirt out of it. See, that clogs the nipple and it sticks to the side of the barrel. You have to keep it— you have to clean it often. Let's do this. Come here. What are you doing? I'm gonna try this. Have you tried washing those? Well, you're dishwasher this week. Put it in the thing and it cleans it up. Not really.
I'm working a lot on the cabin today. So there is no rest for the weary here. I am running out because I had picked some colors. I had like gotten some samples of stain colors. And then when I got them home and just like looked at them, I was like, no. On the interior, we have our colors solidified, which is exciting and great. And so we're going to do that. We have that. So I'm on my way to the paint store to pick up the samples. We are in the home stretch. We are in the trying to get— I still have to pick out all the fixtures for the bathrooms. We have one more house to remodel. We are not remodeling anytime soon. I was like, 5 years. I think I need a 5-year break from remodeling. I'm extremely overwhelmed with it being the end of August and there's still stuff to preserve on the homestead and the cabin finishing up at the same time. It's just a lot.
Park that and come help.
Mama's gone.
We're not watching tractors.
Mama's gone.
So?
Mama said I did.
Papa's right here.
Mama didn't— I had to watch tractors for 4 hours.
No way. No way she said that. She didn't say that. I'm more likely to let them on screens than she is. Josiah, you having a hard time getting up? Oh, that's making a huge mess.
Is it?
Oh my gosh, you gotta clean it up. We've got 10 gallons of skim. We're getting behind on— so we need to incorporate this more into our animal food to start saving on grains. I've never done this before, so I don't know if this is a good job for you. So what you have to— no, no, we, we don't say that. Well, it started off good. Okay, I'm wondering if there was a better— go ahead. Should we cut that out, Austin? I guess not, it's real life. Zipper down. How long has that been down? Uh, yeah, I got the hand, foot, and mouth that's been going around. Covering the gloves. Hopefully Jonah and his mom won't get it. Plateaued with my shoulder recovery. I mean, I was healing every day and then it just kind of got stiff. So, and I have some psoriasis. I won't show you where that's at. I've had that, yeah, a long time, but it's extra right now, probably from all the inflammation in my body. So I'm not eating. I stopped to eat. I didn't eat supper last night. I didn't eat breakfast. So, uh, we're near 24 hours. I'm gonna sit, got my feet on the ground. Just need to force myself to take breaks. Beef broth has been frozen in super cubes, and then now some frozen in 2-cup increments, which is so handy. And the beet bits, which was just a great little, uh, stew, I thought, was not a breakfast. Let's see it. I don't think they're ready for that. We'll sneak this into a more stewy soup. Now we have some open cubes. Important to keep them cycled. You just need to freeze them in the cubes, then get them in bags. Really shouldn't just store them. Cooled off broth, not the most gelatinous. That's good, it's good. Do, do the next cube now. They won't fit in our bags if we overdo it. And that line is the to-cut line anyway. Then tomorrow we get those out and freeze those, freeze those. We keep it going. Josiah, take this batch down to the freezer of all this good stuff. Roasted bones ready for the stock pot. This is why we do it all at once. We used— we just rinsed our jars, didn't have to wash them. We'll just scrub this out and just get it going again. So we sort of just keep going and we don't have to set up, tear down every time. We're in motion of getting things out of the Super Cubes and then we're just getting in the groove, we're just getting in the flow. And then once we're done, we're done. We don't have to do it again for a year.
Like this.
Half a year. What you making, Lily?
I'm making a blueberry popsicle.
Just a blueberry popsicle?
Yeah, I've never made a blueberry popsicle. This is the first time.
What'd you put in it?
Um, maple syrup, blueberries, yogurt, and water.
Nice.
And I blended it and then I freeze it and then boom, it's there.
What you making for lunch, babe?
Um, chicken. All right, should I make mashed potatoes?
It's up to you what you, you, what you want. It's your choice. Start, make this sauerkraut before these cabbages go bad. Trying to apply my own rules when they're always— there's too much to do, too little time. Start with what you have. Okay, so that means certainly before we expand, we're making sure we use the food we've Harvey heard to harvest it and preserve it. Tablespoon per head, isn't it?
Now, yeah, but also these heads are small, a little small.
Okay, do you think that's even enough for a half-gallon jar? Is that a quart jar?
No, it'll still be a half gallon probably.
Now I'm gonna smash it up, mash it up, baby, for a couple hours. Let that sit for a couple of hours. Always turn the compost pile. This morning we're gonna turn it 2 more times and then call it good for the garden. All our skim milk— right now these chickens are just eating dry layer feed. Why not? I just soaked this feed just now with Skin milk. After this, we'll soak it for tomorrow's feed. Oh, you guys are gonna love it. Try to start giving more eggs. And they are on the verge. They're in a slump right now. We got 11 eggs yesterday. That slump right before the new chicks start laying.
Big chick, chick, chick, chick.
Oh yeah, milk, milk. Fed eggs, here we come! Heck yes!
I'm gonna get the eggs and you bring the hay.
Okay, sure. That's a move up in the level, boss me around. Hopefully that'll make up for the little bit of feed you didn't have for a while. I'm gonna estimate 20% of their diet is going to come from milk today, which is a big deal. I'm very happy about that. That's less grain we have to buy. That's more protein-based eggs we're going to be eating. Those cows, they're amazing. Run the entire farm. Bring a couple of these. These are freeze-dried tomatoes.
I'm home. I'm gonna go down here and look at the freeze dryer. Sounds like it's on, so maybe Justin started it for me. I'm not gonna keep this food because it's been in here like— I, I just don't think this would be— maybe it's perfectly fine, I don't know, but I'm not going to keep it just in case it's not fresh.
What's happening? Why are you guys eating cream cheese and raisins? No, did you already eat your meal? Yeah, we'll eat some more. There's not enough chicken. There's so much chicken. Don't you have to eat? No, come on, get some more. I'm not eating. Come eat. This is the best stuff right there. I'm not even tempted to eat. One reason, because I'm not hungry. It must be the virus. Ah, 2. I'm feeling good. We gotta organize this pantry. We need room. She needs to come in here and be able to see just a pantry full of food. I wanna know, how do you, how do you feel about eating breakfast first thing in the morning now that we're cooled off and we've had lunch? It's fun. Were you actually hungry for lunch? Yeah. So you ready to do it tomorrow, or would you want to go back to the old ways? I don't know, I like the old ways better. I don't like eating in the morning that early. Hmm, well, change is hard. You think you guys could get up earlier and not just roll out of bed and eat? Maybe. Maybe get up and do your training or go get the milk supplies ready. We could try. Could you do that? Okay, how do you feel? It was good. Was it? If it were up to you, would you go back to the old ways? Probably. Okay, were you actually hungry for lunch though? Yeah, I think they're always hungry. How are you feeling about the—
I like it.
Breakfast situation?
It's a little rough. It's gonna be a little rough for a little bit, but we gotta get into habit. Once we get into the habit, it's gonna be primo. I really liked it personally. I was not even hungry until lunch. Yeah, I was very full. I I just like ate and then I got going. Yeah, I liked it.
I know they don't like it. Lily, she could make her popsicles once a week or something. That could be part of the breakfast. I feel like they need to somehow get up before.
Also, I'm willing to make like a loaf of bread, have that intermixed with it.
As long as you and I aren't going to be tempted.
We can sometimes, um, well, that's my whole goal, putting on muscle. So my body can handle it.
All right, well, now you can start training. Yeah, I know, because we aren't as intense in the garden. How do you feel about the meal situation now?
It's okay.
Now that everybody's cooled off after breakfast, do you like it, or do you want it to go back the way it was?
Uh, I like it because then I don't have to come back in after chores.
Okay, all right. So you probably got outvoted by your siblings, but I think Mom and I are trumping everybody. Body anyway. I think it's better and everybody will like it better in the long run, especially with winter coming on and they're not going to be getting light till 8 o'clock. I know it's getting lighter later. We're already at 7. Mom wants to know, so we're going to the fair on Friday. Do you want— do you— are you gonna need me to ride rides with you? Probably. I get nauseous. There's Jonah just Messiah. Jonah's not old enough. And Lily, can't you ride with Lily? Why not?
I can ride with Jonah.
I've done it before. And then you ride with Lily. Rebecca, he'll ride with, uh, Lily or Jonah. Should I just suck it up? But I'd only be good for 2, 3 rides.
You don't want to go? You don't want to ride?
No, I don't want to ride rides.
Hang out together.
I don't want to ride rides. I'm there now. I'm 46. I'm there now. I'm over the rides. What's up, comments? Are you there yet? Are you still— are you still about rides? Yay or nay? Hey, I got news for you. Yes, can you make sense of this? I've been crashing every day for a long time, about 10 or 11 o'clock. Haven't eaten since yesterday lunch. Yeah, I feel fantastic. It's crazy. It's crazy how good I feel right now. I'm not crashing.
It's great.
I know I need to rest because I'm fasting, but right, I'm probably not gonna need a nap.
I—
maybe I will.
I think you need to do, uh, see, this is the hard part.
I can—
it's Lily's birthday next week. You're gonna want to celebrate with us and not eat just one thing or a very small amount of food. Do you know what I'm saying? Yeah, so I think that—
well, we could see what it does, and I certainly don't need to overdo it. I need to do it more where I just take a little bit so I don't spike my blood sugar, right?
So originally I had picked out this color, but then we ended up going with this color. Oops, I had originally picked that color. But we're gonna go with this color for the house. For the— yeah, so it's this one right here. So you can see it's, it's what we have in our house, white flower. This is really exciting. So you know how we had volunteer sunflowers? Well, I chopped some of the heads so that I could save seeds. We've got this out because that's gonna— what we're gonna use for the log wash that we have to wash the logs before the stainer guy comes, the painter. Um, so yeah, I'm just leaving these here. I'm gonna harvest some flowers from them because they were really beautiful. All right, I'm gonna get on the computer, Justin. I have things to buy.
Don't I look like a professional chef with these gloves? What you up to, dog? I didn't know if you were in frame.
I am.
There's the behind the scenes getting the the flour off. Well, that's what aprons are for.
I know. I don't know where my apron is.
That, um, I don't know what Dorcas sent you. Yeah, I know, right? I just did a 36-hour fast. Glorious to eat. We'll see how I react tomorrow. We got beans. You're making a special recipe with those beans, aren't you? I did. Coming soon. This is the cold Lamb. I've tasted it already, it's pretty good. We had to kill those little lambs early. Do watch out, I did hit up a piece of gristle. It was our first butchering of a lamb. How are the blueberry popsicles? They're good. Good as strawberries?
No, I like the strawberry one better.
Well, could it be because there's not as much cream in it? Maybe.
Yeah, it's kind of like—
it's a little more icy.
I don't know.
It needs more yogurt. How is he screaming when there's ice cream? There's popsicles, bro.
Because I told him he couldn't go outside with Gideon. Oh.
Well, come finish your popsicle. Oh, he didn't like it. Well, breakfast was hit or miss this morning. Miss. Maybe tomorrow will be a bigger hit. We'll see. Great day overall. The fast helped me. We'll see what happens tomorrow. I'd love for you guys to tune in and hang out with us again tomorrow. Thank you. Have a great day. Happy day.
