What Actually Happens on Cream Separating Day

Victor Justin Rhodes walks through cream separating day on his family homestead, processing 25 gallons of milk and making double-batch mint-chocolate-chip ice cream. The vlog captures routine chores: milking cows, moving pastures, fixing equipment with alligator clips, and handling seed orders, all with playful family banter and improvisation.
Chapters
Cream separating day. 21 gallons of milk, plus 4+ gallons that we're gonna milk fresh. So like near 25 gallons of milk. What in the world do we do with that every week? Well, we're gonna go into detail in tomorrow's special update video. That's where we're gonna talk about what do we do with all this milk. Today's vlog, we're getting this done. Um, getting the cow chores done, just, just getting stuff done generally going into the weekend.
You wanna ride on the ogre?
All right, he wants to ride— he calls it the ogre. The Ergo has seen better days, but I don't know, you're gonna be what, 6 in October? Maybe we should, maybe we should gird up our loins and ride him in the Ergo.
And today's a fun day.
Okay, come here, Gideon. Let's do this. You hanging on to that?
I'll hold it. I can hold it.
Ready? Drop the soap. Is this the last ride? We don't know when that's gonna happen, do we? Yeah, this could be the last ride. Where are my shoes?
You left them!
Where are my shoes, Mr. Brown? Are they?
Yeah.
Where?
You came in barefoot.
Oh, that's right. I'm bad as you today, Mr. Brown. Josiah, you have your shoes on. Will you go get it for me? All right, thanks for the boots, Josiah. How'd our covers hold up? It didn't frost last night, but that's okay. That was just a possibility. Tonight it's gonna— it's gonna freeze. Hopefully we can keep these on all day. It's not gonna get too hot, but they held up. Everything still looks really good. Feeling really good, really prepared going into tonight's crazy weather, being that it's like May— what is it, May 8th, something like that? Get in! You're almost 6. Hey, when did you stop riding in the Ergo?
Uh, maybe 2 or 3, I guess.
Well, I think Jonah stopped when you came along. Nobody's came along after you, Mr. Brown. So I guess you're gonna be 20 in my pack. Yeah, yeah, it's been a little cold for flies, but we're getting them in the practice anyway. Start turning these patties. You guys ready? I see the ice you got back in here with these guys. All right, I'm looking for extra alligator clip. We used our all alligator clips on the load tunnels securing them. Mr. Brown says he sees one right there. Sure enough, but I think that's an end to a positive. I have an idea to free us up an alligator clip with this one-ended alligator clip. So instead of pinching this wire with one alligator clip and connecting it there. I could do this, and then I could borrow that alligator clip. I jerry-rigged that on there. That'll do us temporarily. All right, we freed us up some alligator clips. Hey, look who's right there waiting on us, Josiah. Couldn't be any easier. All right, let's let Miss Thing through. Come on. It's gonna be an interesting experiment. Plus, he has gone up in there. We left it open so that we can get Phyllis out. Phyllis is up there. Meanwhile, let's move the luchadors. Well, look at here, Flossie got in herself and Phyllis is having her little snack. Good job, Flossie! Are you guys ready for me to start milking? Look at this contraption, my man! Hi! You rigged up a stabilizer for your skim hose, comes out of the cream separator. Okay, all right, Mr. Brown, you're off the ergo. You can stay in here. Yeah, good job, Teddy. Jillian's out of the ergo.
You want to go ergo?
Oh really? Come here, come here, my little baby. Come here, my fifth baby. Come here. You give me kisses. He's all into it.
He's into it.
Oh my gosh, he's gonna cut my beard with the licks. There we go. Oh my word.
You take your math away from him.
Oh, I know. I'm gonna have to walk like this. Oh, he's beside himself with happiness.
Close to Papa.
The only thing may make him happier is if you did it. I know, I was gonna say that.
Would you like it if I carried you into ergo sometimes?
All right, grab the leash in case this doesn't work out. I guess I'm dragging the leash. Teddy, I don't know, she gets nervous with you, so I'm gonna put you down for this. Hey, how'd the chicks do? We put a space heater in here. Mama, ever the nurturer, put a space heater in there. I don't think it's necessary, but she, she want to be extra careful, and that's a good thing because everybody is alive and well. Not one single— well, we did have one more turkey pullet died. So lost one in the mail and lost one in the brooder, but that's not bad for turkeys. That's real good, actually. We haven't lost any of the original. Hey, look who just showed up with her audiobook! What are you listening to today? Spirit. Let's pause it for a second. Let's get a shot of you milking. Go, go for it, girl. Yes, it's good to have you back. Lily was in a special online homeschool lesson, but she's back. Oh look, yeah, she always gets a little treat for Teddy. That's good. He doesn't need a whole lot.
You know, whenever I come, I'll give him milk.
Nice. Where are you gonna set it? Oh yeah, you're making him sit. Good. Good. How's it going in here, Grandma?
Wonderful. We're okay, getting ready.
Good. You got 4 buckets full, 5-gallon pots. Do you need any more pots?
Nope, we're ready.
You don't need any more pots?
Uh, no.
Wow, 4 did it.
Yep.
Okay, good deal. You rinsing that out, getting it ready? It's working though, it's going right down into the The bucket. Grandma and Jonas' invention is awesome.
Run hot water through it first before you do the milk.
All right, we're coming to get hamburger out to his mom. Look, Papaw's tree is leaving. Leafing? Leafing? Is that what you say? Anyway, it's alive, it's well. This maple, it's going to be beautiful right there. So happy we planted that in honor of my late dad. Thanks to Homesteaders of America for sending us that. Okay, Hamburger, you ready to go? Uh-oh, there's no gate right here. Do them out if I lift it up right there. There is a gate right here. Everybody's laying down. Everybody, here he comes. Wait, watch out. Get in your— you're standing right in the way, honey. There you go. That was easy. Well, they say a laying down cow is a fat cow. It's when they gain their weight. So everybody's happy and gaining weight right now. Their poop looks good, looks like pumpkin pie. That's a good— you know, it's not crazy splattery, so everybody's well. What's wrong? We're gonna roll up their cross fence and give them a new pasture. Getting a little bit of work done this afternoon, but the wind— I just— the wind just went crazy. Look! Teddy, Teddy, it's the wind, it's the wind, Teddy.
Oh, is that it?
I guess that's—
no, I mean, I don't know what the gusts are, but like, okay, having constant wind.
Okay, all right, well guys, we gotta go do chores in an hour. Hopefully it looks like it might be raining on us. Well, on second thought, I don't think we need to wait an hour. Rebecca says The radar says rain's coming in an hour. It looks like rain could come even sooner. Let's get these chores done. Oh look, Mom's order came. Includes a flame weeder. We're getting serious. Our Johnny Seeds order is here. But I've been instructed not to open it. She gets to open it. Watch this. Hey Johnny, you gonna open that real quick?
You're funny.
You're real funny.
Huh? Nobody's supposed to open that with you? Nobody's—
no, because you guys lose the pieces before it's been put together.
I'm just teasing. I'm just joking, as Gideon would say. I know, I know. Got her blood flowing. Had a little overlap there. Jonah, can you roll up one of these, honey?
I can roll them up. I can't tie them.
Yeah, you've got— you got that so far. Yeah, that's right. Wrap the other one around it once. Yeah, and then through this hole, put the bow through there. There's your bow. All right, we got our nets up in like 10 minutes. Let's go put them up. So we got our nets down in 10 minutes, let's go put them up. We got our big old fence up now to look Oh look, they know it's coming. You guys know it's coming. You ready for the move? You go ahead, I'll spot you. Because they technically could get out right here. The gate's not till down there. You got to go fast, you got to go fast. Go down there, go down that way, go down that way. Call them, call them. Thank you, my man. They're very confused because normally we pick it up and they walk right through right there. There we go, there we go. Good, perfect. The bro hauler parade right there. Look at this, look at this clover patch they destroyed. And that's happy animals on grass right there. And we finished in record time, like an hour. One more thing to do, check on the chicks.
We tried.
How are the sea monsters?
They're good.
Monstrous as ever?
They buried their feeders.
Oh yeah, look, they did. You gonna clean those out?
I tried doing this, Papa, but it got bad, so we have to scoop it out and put it in.
Oh yeah, yeah, that's too big for in here. We'll do that, we'll do that in half a week when these guys go out. Yeah, you just, you just hand it to me. I don't need to go in there too.
Wow.
Okay, here you go, Jonah. Okay, cleaned out, filled up. Last thing, let's get, let's get it going.
She had it on 4.
I don't know if that's on or off. Here we go. I guess that.
No, because it was that when I walked in.
Okay, put it down then. All right, that's, that's a wrap, man. We got it in record time. We actually finished it all in a little less than 1 hour. Oh, we were out laboring in this cold I know!
It's like winter out there.
But you're taking care of us. What you making?
Mint chocolate chip. Oh!
A double batch. When are we gonna eat that?
When it's ready tonight.
Ooh, okay. Ice cream maker in action. Vanilla. It's later in the day and she's got the ice cream maker in action. It's Villanella. Notice it's a push-button type. We're not making any memories. We're getting ice cream done every week. And what I mean by that is like sometimes you get a lot of fun memories from cranking and hand cranking ice cream. That's all well and good, but yeah, we like to push the button and create memories eating it and, and growing it. That's right, that's the memories. I have enough memories with this ice cream.
