La la la, let me be free. Did you say good?
You did. First, she fills up the little boy's love tank. He likes to hang out with Mama for a little while. All the rest of you, I had to get up and take you with me in the morning. You guys wanted to get up and go. Put you on ergo and go. What do you got planned for her birthday?
I got her some flowers.
She's also a head nurse.
Didn't get it. I can see it though. Go back with it. Move it around.
This is stubborn eyelash, huh?
It is. Hold this like this.
Hold it up like this. Is this what you imagined you'd be doing on your 45th birthday?
No.
Talk to your mom. What you up to?
Um, I'm looking for coconut flour and baking soda.
Mom's had a request. It's awesome. Mom can just print out a recipe and that little girl can make it. Coconut layer cake. It takes 16 eggs. Seems like a farm-friendly dish. Chief researcher, what you researching this time?
I feel like I've read somewhere, and it might be— I might have the book here— if you put a flaxseed in the eye, it like draws it to it.
Come on. I leave Mom to research Auntie Vi, thanks. She's our chief purchasing officer. She is our MVP, most valuable purchaser. Get in, go through and find our cake pans. Who do you think organized all this from when, uh, we had the grease fire in the cabin? Found them! Cake pans. Here's your cake pans. How's it going so far? Good.
I just had to—
I just have to add the, um, dry ingredients.
And then that's it.
Okay, look what I found when I was over there for your Greek salad. Oh, some gluten-free bread we can toast for croutons. And ordering things isn't always easy. Rebecca, while she's in there planning, ordering, doctoring, uh, we're gonna work on this remodel. One of our in-home goals Was May 6th, her birthday. We wanted to have a birthday cake in the remodel. We wanted to be in.
We have to find Lily's birthday.
Oh yeah, that's September. Our new goal is July 4th. We believe that's very generous. Countertops, which is one of the very last things, is coming June 10th. And then all you have is finish electric and plumbing. So surely we can get the finish electric and plumbing done in that 3 weeks. Bless her heart. This morning when I asked her, I said, what do you want for your birthday? She said to be in our house. Yeah, so it's a happy day and a sad day. At least I'll feel like we're doing something towards it. This guy on his own initiative is bringing these rocks down. She wants to build up this area here in her front yard, build up that rock wall, fill that in with dirt. Before we do that though, Gideon, we got to get this ditch dug to get the water off of the house. Oh, it's beautiful, isn't it? And that's been a big part of her job. Planning this, keeping this, making all the decisions about this. Here's your birthday present— a hole in the— I'm digging yet another hole for you.
I know, I somehow attract holes.
You know why you're digging holes?
Because it's good for you.
He presented you with some flowers, one to be in a pot in case that's what you want, and one to plant.
I like them. I like— I just don't know where I'm not ready for them.
That's the problem.
Well, you told me 11 o'clock, which is why you want to do it.
I'm just trying to do too much in too little time, like always. I want to get your hole dug. I want to get your tomatoes planted.
Two rows, I think, and maybe a third for the cucumbers.
Okay, let's do these three rows. Look at all your volunteer tomatoes. I know, we've had volunteer tomatoes. I'm not like big boys or Romas. They're all cherry, all of them.
They're called Matt's Wild— yeah, mini cherries or whatever, and they are prolific.
We want to cover this, all these volunteers and weeds, and we could hoe, but that would just stir up more. And if we just leave this tarp on 2 more weeks, it should kill them mostly. Your happy place. This is a good job. Tomatoes, are they root bound?
No, they're not. Like, even let me show you this. This is when I looked at them a couple weeks ago. This is what they looked like.
Okay, so everything's really wanting to grow right now.
It is.
Kill them doing this.
I feel like it will be a shock, but it's actually good to pot up, isn't it?
I think so. I mean, I don't want to spill that dirt everywhere. This, this one doesn't have very big roots system.
Every plant means something to you.
Holding its life in my hands. I want to put it in a smaller pot.
Little preemie.
It's a little baby.
Becca spends a lot of time in here, and you can only shoot so many shots in here before it's boring because it's the same. That's just a lot of what homesteading is. She takes one plant, pots it up, puts the soil in there, and then does it again 100 times.
Super boring, but very important work. These are my babies, my plant babies.
There you go, 1 minute real time. How do you like that? Real life homesteading right there. This is what you end up getting done, huh?
Yeah, so I did all— I did those tomatoes, and there's 2 back, back, okay, 2 trays out back there. I potted up my romaine New plant to us. It is. Everyone says pick it young.
You may guess what plant that is. All you good Southerners probably know what that is. I ought to be eating this if I'm gonna be a good Southerner.
A good Southerner, yeah.
It's okra.
I'm hoping we like it.
Well, anybody like it fried?
Well, I was gonna say, I was thinking I might try to figure out a way to, um, fry it and then freeze it. And then bring it back to eat it via baking, baking it. Or the other thought I had is to batter it and then freeze it battered, not cooked.
Now I'm gonna hook these two PVC pipes up together. Oh, this is the world's stickiest glue. John, let me see it. Poor John can't feel it.
John, let me see it. I got it. Oh no, it just slipped some more.
You need a vice to open it. No, I'm joking. Oh, you spilled it on yourself.
It's fiber.
Oops.
It's fiber.
I got it, John. That was not that hard. I really hope that is not poisonous to the skin.
Whew, this stuff is not looking— Oh my gosh.
Poor John, he's shaking. Your muscles are like, what are you making me do?
If I had a good grip around it, but I can't. Third time's charm. Apparently not.
Okay, it's bent.
I know, why? It just came off. There we go.
Oh, you got it?
Yeah. Oh yikes.
Yeah, John, this stuff you do not want on your skin.
This is another thing Rebecca does, and that's the specialty meals. But because it's her birthday, I guess Guinea and I are gonna do it here, and we're making pizza. Special meals, cheat meal, no diets tonight. We got our Powerbake for— Powerbake prep. Rebecca gets to relax. Why don't you cut this up a little better? Oh, oh, oh. Here, just put that to the pigs. It's a little beat up. Look at all this help I've got now on the pizza. You want the pepperoni open? Lily, grab a knife and open up. Mom, I couldn't keep you out of the kitchen even on your birthday.
Well, this is a more intricate recipe and I wanted to—
You're making a what?
I'm making— I made homemade mayo and I'm making a Caesar dressing.
Do you have to make homemade mayo because that goes in Caesar dressing?
Correct.
So you gotta make 2 homemade things. I have made homemade croutons and they seem to have turned out fabulous. She likes a Greek salad with her pizza.
No, Caesar.
Caesar. Did it get in and I pull it off or what?
I like it.
You like it? That passed the test. Oh yeah, I see it. Greek salad. No, Caesar salad.
Caesar salad.
Pizza and Italian cheese sticks. Time for the birthday blessings. You want to say something nice about Mom? Mama is good.
That's right.
All right, now get in, guys.
Mama's a good mother and she likes to cook.
Mother. I love, I love, I love the mother.
You know why he's calling me a mother instead of a mama? You getting into— you like to have—
oh, you want to come in? Okay.
Oh, Mom, a mama sandwich.
And then when you're not open You want me to open a present?
Yeah, well, you're gonna have to get her one.
You— it's from you?
Yes.
Okay, go get it, go get it. It's from Grandma and Grandpa. Go give it. I'm sorry, we're kind of lax on presents.
Yeah, it is.
We're a little or a lot over budget over there. Which one you want to guess? Oh, this is from Grandma and Big Daddy.
I think I asked her about—
I'm pretty sure it's sewing scissors.
She's checking through the bag.
It's disappointing.
Sewing scissors.
I'll be like, hey, where'd you get that? Of whatever it is. Yeah, it's these scissors. I was talking to her about them.
Those are super nice scissors. I was like, Mom, are you gonna start sewing?
No, these are just for any time use.
It doesn't have to be sewing.
Hey, do your little—
Never seen any influencers do that. That's new to me. Disappointing.
A tape! I do use these on the regular to measure my children.
Tape. I've never seen somebody so excited about tape. But we could have gotten her something.
We could have got her sewing needles.
No, I had asked her, I was like, Mom, where'd you get those scissors?
They were good.
Yeah, see, she like, for Christmas she got me one of those little for the bathroom. I love it.
I like Mama because she's nice and she supports my horses.
She is supporting of the dreams.
I do support the dreams. I try.
I like Mama because she buys me everything I need and she's a good mom.
Oh, she's the MVP.
Which is what?
Most Valuable Purchaser.
I was gonna say it's something. It's not a person.
Mama's a nice mama because she supports our dreams and buys us everything we need.
Come on now, I think he stole— I think he stole Lily's blessing. I think he stole Josiah's. Give her icing on top.
And she makes our birthdays very special.
Oh, that's true. Recently you went away from us, I think it was 3 days, you know, 4 days. 4 days, okay. Yeah, um, you'll see why I was thinking 3 days here in a second, you know. It's, it's, you know At first it's kind of like, okay, Mom's going away, you know, it's kind of different, it's kind of exciting, you know, things fall through the cracks. And then I was gonna say about day 3, it's like, okay, yeah, things are falling through the cracks. You're a crack filler. We're running out of peanut butter, you know.
I know, I got a text, you need to order more peanut butter, and I was like, right now? I need it, need it now.
If this keeps keeps going. It's gonna be the Lord of the Flies over here. Back, you hold it together. You are the glue in the cracks. You are the caulk in the cracks. Real romantic blessing there.
Thanks.
I caught it. All right, crack filler. My crack filler. Look at this beautiful cake. We are going somewhere special for this cake.
What did you bring? I mean, you bring forks for us. And what's this for?
But what's this for?
It's for holding the— what?
What is it for?
Is it for holding the piece of cake? Yeah, that's your— that's your— that's your cake holder.
Thank you.
All right, the dream was to be in the Holler House by her birthday. Well, that didn't happen, but we still have a lot to celebrate. We got our wood floors in, we got our cabinets in, trim is coming soon, finished paint is soon. We got a roof on. The end of May, they sand and shine the floor, put the finish on. Counters coming early June, finish plumbing and electrical. This is our first Well, we've eaten, uh, organs in this place. How do you say liver? Testicles? How do you say heart?
Corazón.
Corazón. I'll just make sure one's just ready. It's actually good. It's like calamari. Yeah, the heart. Have you had heart before? No, I have not. Right? That's good too. This isn't our first meal, but this is definitely our first cake. Becky, we're having our first birthday in here.
Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, dear Mama. Happy birthday to you.
She's singing with all her heart. Are you gonna help me?
Okay, 1, 2, 3.
3.
Yay! This is kind of funny though, because we're not going to be ever sitting here. This is the living room, but you guys will have this memory.
You'll be like, remember the very first birthday we had in here? We weren't even finished.
We'll talk about the next birthday, which is Lily's, right?
We'll be in here by September, won't we, babe?
We better be.
We're shooting for July door. Let's not even get our hopes up for that.
What's your birthday?
Yeah, this house is very special. Your mom and I got engaged about right here. No, no, no, it was over there already. I'm disoriented.
Well, because remember, this was the wall going out to the porch, so the fireplace was right there.
So it's about right here. Josiah, then you were born about right here, and everybody was born in here except for He was born at the gas station and you were born at the hospital. Henry ain't even looking up. Billie, is it good? Moist?
Yeah.
Mmm, that's delicious.
Happy birthday, girl.
