What Happened AFTER the Pigs left the Forest

Victor Justin Rhodes and his family clear an overgrown forest patch into pasture, felling trees and removing stumps with chainsaws and mowers. After the work, Victor goes mountain-boarding for the first time in a decade, and the group spots a black bear walking near the dam.

Today you're gonna see a landscape transformed from dense forest to forested pasture. Now that's dense. So dense it's practically unusable. Just look right behind us. We're turning it into this. From this to this. All right, the plan is we got some little stuff here. Some of this is so little we can get it with the mower. Ultimately, Today we're gonna be coming in through here with the mower to get this little stuff. We're gonna have to get this big stuff out of the way. Sharpened the chainsaw yesterday. We have cousin JD, big strong guy. How strong are you? Could you lift a shopping cart, four-wheeler, or small car?
Well, I've been known to lift a shopping— not a shopping cart, but a four-wheeler onto the porch here, so—
You gotta bring that up.
You gotta bring that up.
We go way back.
Strong enough to make you mad.
Summer's at the Rhodes'. Yep, ended up with four-wheelers on the porch. He's gonna be able to help us this morning. This is gonna be— if all goes well, hopefully we'll get this done. Oh look, we've got to pick up, get up some stumps. How we're gonna do that? We're gonna get that, we're gonna cut it as best as we can, maybe dig it out a little bit. More stumps, a lot of trees falling down, a lot of dead stuff. Ooh, another stump. Gonna pick that up and throw it onto our burn pile eventually, 6 months or so after that's dried out, burning that up for ashes and charcoal to spread in place. How are you guys this morning? They're already on their next job. You guys did a fab job over here, by the way. Grass is going to come up right here, and this is going to be much more productive than it was. Whoops, I see you got your— you knocked your water over somehow. How did that happen? Oh, we didn't fill it up all the way, hoping to move it around and feel better around the water. All right, we're coming at this. Hang in there. First we gotta go get the niños and JD. Oh, and of course we gotta get— first priority, get them some water. Look, they're going for it. Hopefully tonight, for sure tonight. I like that shirt. Good morning, niños. Sueno. Okay. Well, as you can see, Mr. Brown is passed out, and we're gonna have a huge party tonight with JD and the family. So let's let him sleep so he can stay up and not be a big grump. Let's get things ready. Good morning, JD. I like the cowboy boots. Yes, we're ready. So put me to work.
I'm a city slicker, but I can do my best.
Just how tall are you?
6'2". A little bit taller than this guy.
How strong are you?
Not as strong as you. Okay, I don't have that farm strength yet. Give me a week though.
You look pretty strong. Yeah, you got the Texas boots on. Got the boots fitting it, sitting just fitting in just right. It's a good kid, that JD. As he's saying He's a city slicker. Look at his house. But you know what? He's one of the best workers in the world. One of the best workers that ever has been here. Good spirit, good work ethic, good attitude, has a lot of fun. Good all-around guy. What you got you doing, JD? Just, uh, refilling some grain here and just do what I'm told. You know, JD, Jonah reminds me of you a little bit when you were that age. Really dutiful, pleasant to be around, hardworking, fun. A lot of responsibility. Yeah, that's right. See that? Just the little stuff, just opening the door for him. Nobody had to ask you that. That just helps though. Good morning! Just in time, bro. You ready, J-Dizzle?
Yeah, I like this Cadillac.
Yeah, man, it's nice. Good morning, Lily. Who wants me?
Yeah.
Who?
Gideon.
Oh, how do you know?
Because I can hear him screaming on the steps.
Oh, that puts a speed bump to everything. It's 8 till 8. Ah, we really need a good hour. I hope you're ready. Are you ready? And I saw one of your rubber shoes downstairs, but only one, so can you wear these? Good. He wants to wear his boots like everybody else. JD, why didn't you tell me that before I put on your tennis shoes? Aren't these easier to put on? Come on, you gotta help. That's why. There you go. JD and Josiah have started. We're clearing this while it's loose brush, JD, and then I can come back in and nick stuff like this. What? Time to refuel, rechain. I cut these poplars— very edible, very edible tree. I cut this thing. This will come back at a level that the pigs or the cows can eat. They can't eat it, forage for it way up there, so we've cut it here and it'll come back. Midway checkup. Everybody doing it?
Doing it.
You glad we're doing this before it gets hot? What do we lack, guys? Let's get this mowed today. Let's get this mowed today. Can we do it? We got to get this patch up and come in here with the mower. That's it. I think we can move over some of that stuff. All right, let's, uh, get this chain back on here. What? Oh yeah, and the older you get, the more you sweat. Let's finish this up. We've refueled. I'm very hopeful that we can get it. JD, you're doing good. Josiah, you're doing good. We almost got it. How was it, JD?
Exhausting, but good. It was good. Feel good? A lot of hard work. Okay, hard work at the hall.
The good news is we hit it hard once a week. And we're done. The pigs are gonna underbrush this for us and we'll get it next. So this was that, guys. That's what this is. We got it mowed. We got it mowed. We did it. This spot was particularly crazy. This is where I jumped through. This right here, that's where I tried to jump through this morning and couldn't. Gone, gone. Now grass is gonna come and it's gonna look like this. Oh, this is so beautiful. This is so exciting. We worked hard this morning. It was worth it. We won, we won. We got it done, JD. Yes, we got it done. You're earning your keep.
Yes, and you're putting hours in this morning for some dinner.
Your keep is right there, buddy.
Yummy.
Look at this.
Let me give you a plate. Beef. This is from beef. Beef. I will give you cucumbers, onions. Uh-oh, pickles. Mom, are these your new addition? Less salty?
No, they're still—
okay, they're still good.
Thank you so much!
We got it done this morning. I hope you are as excited as we are. You got to see the end product there. Yes! Yes!
Yes!
Now, I hope you'll join us. I invite you to join us to celebrate with a little bit of nonsense. We're gonna whip this out. Do you guys remember? I used to be a professional mountain boarder. Cue up a commercial I did. Underlying quality that's in everyone that mountain boards is everybody's a little bit crazy. Yeah, I want to see if I still got it. JD brought his mountain board. I haven't rode one in probably 10 years. Let's see if we got it. Oh, and do stay to the end. Do stay to the end. Let's celebrate together with Ludicrous copious amounts of—
I don't think we'll be able to take all these out.
You're supposed to say fireworks. Oh. Say fireworks! Fireworks! Yes! All the excitement you can muster. Fireworks! There you go. Fireworks! Fireworks!
Fireworks!
Fireworks! Fireworks! Fireworks! About to go down the stem on the mountain board. You think I still got it?
I think I still got it.
I feel it.
I think you still got it.
Just go down to the end and slide. Hey, if you feel nervous, go down to the mid-ramp.
Let's do it the road.
Go midway. No, I just send it and then come up.
Just full send.
Let me see it. Watch. Oh no, see if I still got it.
Oh, he still got it.
He still has it.
Well, I'm 40 years old now. It's been at least 10 years. Still feels like an extension of my feet.
You gonna do it, DJ?
Nervous.
You gonna do it, JD?
I am. I will.
You getting nervous? I am super nervous right now. Oh, you're gonna do it. It's gonna be great. I know, just don't get hurt, okay? I really don't want to take you to the hospital.
I don't want to go to the hospital either.
I know, it's so not fun.
All right, doing it for Dale. Woo! We did it, bro!
But we did it.
You still got it. Sarah and Jonah about to race to right here. I can't tell who's winning. I think Jonah's in the slight lead right there. Jonah on the right, Sarah on the left. Uh-oh, Sarah's pulling up on him, I think. Oh, it's close. Jonah's got a slight one-foot lead. I think Sarah's got maybe some stamina. She's gonna kick it in. Oh, Sarah's pulled ahead. Sarah's got it about one foot. Jonah, give it one last push. Come on, Jonah. Oh, oh! Wow, there's a bear! Hey, just stay, just— it's okay, it's okay, it's not gonna hurt us, it's not gonna hurt us. We're just trying to see it. There it is. All right, we just saw a bear. Everybody panicked. The black bears, they're not gonna hurt you. It's just walking up the dam. It was beautiful. Laurel went after it but came right back. Quiet, quiet. Rebecca, I don't think I got a video, but you got a picture. Wow.
Yeah, Daniel alerted me to it and I looked around and I was just like, oh my gosh, everybody has to get in the car.
Your mama's instinct kicked in, a little bit of panic.
It was a little bit of panic because I've seen bears in the car. I'm okay with that. I'm not okay with seeing bears when the car is 20, 30 feet away.
Okay, fireworks time.
Whoa, I'm getting burned. Oh my gosh, this is really cool. Oh my goodness, I'm on fire. Oh my God!
