What We Do with Old Chickens Not Laying Well (butcher)

Victor walks through culling old laying hens on his homestead, showing the full butchering process from catching to eviscerating. He renders the fat into chips for broth, saves the liver and organs, and turns the meat into sausage. The family coordinates morning chores while managing cows, calves, and rotational grazing across the property.

Top of the morning to you. Big day. Butchering the fat old lady. Hints: scalder is still working. Mark fixed it. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't. I have a dilemma. The Energizer is also a 240. I have to unplug it so the cows will be without— I need to milk right now. I need to skip breakfast because I need to Turn the scalder on. There's high pressure on those cows right now. The calves are— I've been without milk. They're going to want their mamas. Cannot leave it off. Cut it off or something. Mark must have had to shorten that cord to get it to fixed, and now the thing won't reach. Yeah, set it on this. Hurrying step, it doesn't work. This is gonna be hard. It doesn't work with a family because— do I wait till after milking to start to scald it? It takes a couple of hours. The chickens are cooped up. I don't want to keep them up for that long. Okay, I'm sure it would have blown by now. This is the time of the year the fat old lady hens are at the end of their productive life cycle. Their egg production is going to drop in half. They're actually not producing many eggs right now because they're doing the molt. That's why it's better to have young chicks, why we replace them every year. This is normal. They're eating the same amount of food and giving us half the production. So going into the winter, we're going to downsize the flock and not have to feed as much and still get roughly about the same eggs. I mean, we'll lose some. They are laying some. They never completely stop, but we need at least a dozen eggs a day and all year round. So we, we got to stay on top of it. How I know it's time to do this is they dropped in their egg production, and the chicks we bought in the spring are starting to lay, and we're getting a lot of eggs. So It's safe to replace them now and we'll still be in X. 68. I believe it was 59 when we started. It's working. All right, let's hurry up and milk. They need their food and I gotta let these people out. Oh my gosh, I could get Gideon to go be a shepherd, sit out there, make sure they don't cross over. I had to take off their Energizer to plug in the scalder. I'm kind of thinking I should go milk right now, but I need to catch— I need to let the birds out first, right? So they're not cooped up. No, I think milking's first, right? Especially since we haven't gotten it 2 days. Yeah, they're just going to be cooped up. Yeah. All right, is that okay? Yeah, y'all eat without me. I'll come back and eat. Austin did chores for us yesterday on the Sabbath. And then the day before, the fence was breached. Okay, Lily, you'll have to feed people. I'm gonna need to go milk.
I want to eat breakfast.
All right, well, I tried to recruit him. You could, um, come help me keep the calves off of them so I can milk. You think you could run out there and do that? What if you went out there right now and then I let you come back as soon as I got out there and you could come eat? I'm not even gonna be able to eat till after I milk. He's, um, he's rousing. Hey, can you come help me milk? Grab a quick snack, maybe grab an apple or something, and then we'll come back and eat. Okay, now the name of the game is get to these cows before the calves do. They know when you turn that fence off. Are you gonna go? Thank you. Just go make sure the calves don't bust over until I get out there. You better hurry or I'm gonna beat you out there. We leave a hay bucket up here and the chicken comes, lays an egg right outside our door. Am I on to something? Once we get out there and the mamas get their alfalfa and we're done, we milk them, they get that pressure released, we— the calves get back together with them. The fence can be off for hours. Right now the fence can only be off minutes. Okay, Gideon's going out there. That's good. Don't think they've gotten over yet. Not bad. What do you do when the chickens— the chickens need out, the cows need milk quickly, the scalding needs turned on. The scalding can work without us, so we got that going. Um, then, then I prioritize it based on, well, the centerpiece of our farm, the cows. So we have this list of priorities. The cows come first, and even if what's next suffers a little— now, if they were going to die and it was more emergency, of course but they're not gonna die. We might lose some eggs production today from the added stress. We go for the cows in a hard decision, so the chickens will just be cooped up a little bit longer and they'll have to wait a little bit on their feed. What a beautiful morning. Cows are still separated. Something weird's happened though. The horses are How— why are the horses here? Okay, you come spot the calves, please. Harriet's in the wrong paddock too. What is going on? Okay, let's get the non-milkers over. This ain't nearly big enough paddock, y'all. You think the sheep would eat that, or are we too late? We could do smaller paddocks like this if we didn't have the sheep following them. Okay, non-milkers over. Gideon, what's Minty doing over there? Harriet and Minty don't belong there. Their cow's oncoming, so they need to be in the front paddock getting the best grass. The cows get the best grass, they get the first paddock. The sheep follow because the sheep aren't number one, and sheep aren't as picky. Somehow the horses are going over. Hey, I hear Josiah coming just in time. Kids like to milk on the road. I like to milk in the paddock. They poop and pee, we've got the deposit on the pasture, not the road. Come on up here, come this way, it's a little flatter right there. Keep going, keep going. Okay, you watch the calf. See, it happened. A little sheep got through. I have to kill them sooner than later. I mean, we're only a month out anyway, but that's what happens. It's off, they know it, they get out. And if we weren't out here, the other ones would get out, then the calves. You're looking for the leash. Oh my gosh, are we missing the leash too? Missing the, uh, pan. Okay, and the chain's not here. Lucky day, I found some leashes and Lily's horse stuff down there. I told Gideon he could come home and then Harriet burst through, so you're gonna have to stay here, buddy, and spot it. I'm sorry, it's too much pressure. We won! Wait till I show you how much milk we got. Before then though, hungry. We're hungry. We used to intermittent fast and skip breakfast. Bad idea. Bad idea for the circadian rhythm. Your body wants to eat and get going first light. We had to miss that this morning and we're hurting. You guys hungry?
Yeah.
You hungry, my man? You hungry, Josiah? Yeah. So we can't wait to eat, but if we want that food to keep going, we gotta prioritize these animals. And we did it, guys, we did it. Those calves are still over there despite the fence being off. Good job, everybody. We weren't so sure about eating first thing in the morning and then having lighter or no suppers. If we're going to intermittent fast, it's harder to miss supper than breakfast for sure because you're not as busy, you're tired, it's at the end of the day, it's a habit. It's more— usually supper is certainly a more social event, but we're getting used to it. And if I skip supper and come into breakfast, it's a huge reward. It's so satisfying. Whoa, why'd she come over here? Yeah, he will. Now we gotta sort people. All the cows can come over. All right, get in. Can you come? Can you come get the calves over? Huge relief. Now, now, this is going to be a little tricky because sheep are ready to come over too, but— oh good, the horse came back. The horse could stay in this paddock. Oh, let's train Harriet while we're at it. Let's train Harriet. Fine, leave Harriet there. Yeah, let the horses come up. They missed the gate. The other one says come on. Okay, they don't want to go because the horse— come on. Okay, all right, or not. Okay, there's one more thing we need to do, and that's train Harriet. And there goes Harriet. No. Come on back, Harriet. Here's how I get the horses. Well, they can have a little just to get over. Danny, open this fence better. Oh no, they didn't need it. Didn't that horse go through? It's too narrow. We don't want the sheep yet. Whoa, whoa, get over there! No, it's not time yet. It's not time. I know, I know, you're thrown off. It normally is. There we go. Put this sheep back through. One got through. There's sneaky little things. Oh my gosh, come on, come on, Gideon. Come, come, come put this up. Let's tie her up today. Took a day off yesterday, come back. So what are we on, day 5 today? You're right here, so we're just gonna tie you up, and that's gonna be the goal today. Okay, she's caught up. Now we'll just pet her. Watching the riders.
She looks totally chill.
See if we can squat down beside her. Hey, hey. We'll keep just getting down beside her, keep acting like we're milking until she's not kicking us. Do that every day until she has her baby. Henry, did you get kicked out? Oh good, you came out here. The milk though, this bucket plus a full reservoir. We're not out here tending cows, we're out here raising chidlers and tending cows. I'mma— how do you think I got out more alfalfa? Crackhead. Now everybody but yeah, Crackhead here is happy. She's thinking there's got to be some more, there's got to be some more. It's good she's so hooked on alfalfa because it makes it easier to train her. Silvo pasture, you built years ago. A bull and a steer threw it first. It was thick as that, as thick as that. And then pigs, and then we could get in there and we cleared the trees we didn't want, and now they have a nice silo pasture. Years of hard work paying off right there. Why'd you leave? Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep! We gotta go catch the two that got out. These paddocks haven't been big enough, guys. Oh, wait, wait, it's open!
It might be huge.
So, oh, make it bigger. Here comes Lily. Luna's not getting over. Boy, they're different. They're a different animal.
I'm still hoping.
Okay, you're gonna stay and help Lily? We're gonna go and eat breakfast. You want me to? All right, boss. Actually, we couldn't have better horses right now. Both of them are really calm. They're old trail horses. Well, they're not even— oh, they're 6-ish. But Luna's so chill, she's not even going over. I couldn't be more happier for Lily's horse collection right now. It's kind of a rough start with Peach's rearing. And then Blaze, he was spirited. If those two have a spirit, it's chill. All right, can you help me keep those steady? You can't hold it? All right, here we go. This is our day. If we lose this, we might as well just go back to sleep. We might as well just go back to sleep. Our whole day revolves around this. How am I gonna steer? Can you get up here and steer? Okay, can you hold the camera? Can you do kid cam? Okay, film me. Hey, film me trying to move this. There you go. Can you see me in it? Oh, there you go. Come on, I'm gonna need your cameraman skills. I'm not happy with this. Look at the holes the chickens have dug. I'm not, I'm not happy. They've dug for, uh, dust boxes and they're tearing up my pasture. Remember, cows are number one. So if chickens don't complement the current project, doesn't complement the cows, it's not working. They're starting another one there. This one isn't as bad though. I wonder if this area was already divoted. Anyway, we've got an influx of wood chips too. I'm just thinking maybe get the chickens manure on that, get them to start breaking that down. Yes. Oh, I didn't know that. I didn't know that. Let's feed them. I didn't turn it off. Hey, turn that fence off before you come in. All right, let's catch these fat old lady hens. Got a little dust in my mouth. Hopefully that wasn't poop. You get so sick eating chicken poop. Should we put it in a crate first or put it right in there? Okay, I'm so hungry. We, we, we, we have to get these. Look, we have to do right by the remaining chickens. Let them— they're hungry too. Wait, wait, shut that, shut that! Why are you doing that? Why are you doing that? You're not ready. You be in charge of this guy. Oh, and I guess one for the pigs. We got them in there. I think it's a good idea.
Let's get these ones and then let's go eat breakfast.
Let's put those in there. Yeah, and then we can go eat breakfast. And they got— they got more room in this and they're more familiar with the Chickshaw, so that makes me feel better. And we just roll them up. Oh, and we still got to do the ones up top, bud. I don't think there's any pat hiders because there's roosters. I didn't close them up. I know, I don't know why you didn't do that.
I didn't know.
I closed them up this morning, so hold on. So I caught some of it.
Penny's chasing a chicken.
Okay, open that, open that. They all go in here. All right, come on. Make sure we're off. Are you sure it's off?
Yeah, I just turned it off.
It was on?
It was on.
Well, how do I know it's off now?
Cuz I turned it off.
Okay, you open it.
Okay, let me check one.
Oh, that's what I thought. Incidentally, Homesteaders of America sent us this tree in honor of my late father Boots. 2019, so 6 years. I think this next year we can finally take the cage off. That's our first— you know, we're foresting our pastures and pasturing our forest. This will be our first tree where we're creating a forest in a pasture. Okay, you carry the crate, I'll carry these chickens up there. All right, I think I gotta get these chickens off the pasture. They're too rough on it. I'm gonna put them on wood chips. And just let them make compost, and then we'll spread that compost on the pasture. That's the way to do it. See if I can pull this Chickshaw Mini Me up the hill here. We use these things for everything, guys. If you want to build this, you can get the book step-by-step plans at homesteadbuilds.com. I must be moving a dozen chickens. I don't know if I'm gonna make it up this hill. I might have to set y'all down. Let's go set y'all down. And then I'll go for it. I got to the top. Okay, bring that crate. Do I see any old ladies? We're gonna kill roosters too. We've got some beautiful white roosters. We'll keep one of those. We'll keep our golden rooster. There's an old lady. There's one old lady in here. There's one old lady and two roosters, or three roosters. Oh shoot, there's more in the coop. Well, he's getting the crate. Let's reposition this and tell you a story about Jonah. He's missing, right? He went to a soccer tournament. It's his final games. About 3 hours away east. And they had a spectacular game. First game, it was like 8-8 and it went to a final shootout. So lots of points back and forth. I wish I could have been there. It would have been the best game of the season. He lost the second game, so he's out of the tournament. But he had a friend meet him who's out that way, and they had a great afternoon together. And then they— which, we're so proud of him— then he got a hotel room and he heard they were going hunting. We don't hunt per se, but then he said, hey, can I go with you? He was, you know, closer to them there than here, so the dude went hunting. I told him to take pictures of his soccer tournament and stuff. He's the worst for documenting. I did tell him to take pictures of hunting, and— or the mom of the friend did. Check it out. Proud of that kid. It's his first. He's having such a good time. He's checking in with us, but he feels so free and he's just having a good time, and I'm just I just couldn't be more proud and excited for him. It's crazy. He used to skip breakfast. Why? Why? Just try it, man. Skip the evening meal instead of the morning and do it for 3 weeks. You won't want to go back. Okay, there's an old lady right there. We should probably get the ones that are out here first and then get the ones that are captivated. Did you get the feed too while you're at it? Good job. Is Mom okay? I ain't getting so busy and tense like this I can't check in on The beautiful one. She's asking me something about the closet. She's in a cleaning mode. We're going with it. We can't eat yet. We gotta do the chicken. Let's go see my number one. She's doing the unsung hero job. We just sorted through some clothes. Got it in our heart to not just pick up the kitchen today, but to clean it. The beautiful one. You want to come watch me clip chicken's wings? Might as well clip wings while we're at it. Who's that? There's somebody out. I couldn't leave Beauty to this by herself. I just picked up— she's gonna clean. She's even going through the junk drawers. Thank you very much. Thank you. Where's the lid? Thank you for doing this. You want a hug too? Thank you. Where are you going? Oh, sorry. You want a hug too? All right. Now, do you want to come help?
No.
We're gonna go sort chickens and then butcher. I didn't expect so many distractions. The breakfast posse, half of them still cooped. So let's get this on, Josie. I wanted to go out there and do the chickens, but let me tell you, gentlemen, you know what's above even the cows, and especially above the wife, the garden of peace, the cows? Then the chickens, then for us, then the sheep, then the pigs, then the gardens. Yeah, we're doing chickens now because sometimes the garden gets bumped when the beautiful one's into it. The order of priority is going to be different for everyone. For you, the centerpiece of your farm might not— we're gonna leave them whole. Half of them we're gonna turn into— half of them we're gonna cook all at once and make a chicken stock and then have chicken meat. We're gonna stew them for enchiladas, for soups, for things like that. And the other half we're gonna make breakfast sausages and eat them for breakfast. Gideon, run get me the catcher.
What?
Go get me the, the poultry cage. Okay, let's free these poor birds. Starting to rain, we gotta beat the rain. Most of these are youngins. Oh wait, let's catch the old lady before— look for the We can catch any rooster but him and a white one. Good. I need to chill out like Josiah.
I might be a little—
Gary Brecka just said take a timeout. Take, take— don't react, just take breaths. Take some breaths, instantly calms you down. I don't think that's an old lady. Wait, what are you doing? Why are you catching that one? No, not on its right foot. Leave one of the white roosters. Get in where 4 of your chicks was 3 out of the 4 roosters. Now let's check the ones in the coop. Oh boy, rain's coming, guys, quick! How many more we got left? Oh, it's higher. You got it, you got it. Wow, rain is here just in time. Instead of moving them from the crate to the mini me, we'll just kill them first.
Let's go, let's go!
I do want you to come help us. I learned a long time ago we need two things: soap and a rag. Because how can I tend a chidler if my hands are full of raw chicken. We got a piglet out. All right, Justin, enjoy putting the piglet in. It's the most important work. Just enjoy this with your kids. Don't think about the chicken butchering. I mean, look at this.
There it is.
Where'd he get out? Oh, Lily! Lily let him out. That was fun. You guys ready to butcher some chicken?
Yeah, it's just us.
Check through it. Cones, buckets to catch their blood, knife, scalders to temp. Just had you test the, uh, to test the plucker and get it hooked up. Let's go!
Weapons in the chute! Why are you beating me?
Well, we got more than you thought we had. Yeah, how many in here? 1, 2, 3, 4. At least a dozen over there. You know, in these generations we start with 30, so it just shows you how, how much loss you can have. 10, 15, you think we can get done by noon?
Yep.
I was afraid of that. One got out. Come on, everybody else gonna have to do this. Get it. Hey, chase it back down to the other chickens. We'll have to get it in there and then catch it. Lucky over there. There we go. Hey, look who's here. There we go, around the other way. There you go, there you go. Wait, wait, wait, are you catching it? Okay, we can try. Come on, get in, get in.
Arms out. I was gonna trap him.
Hey, don't chase him that way. Chase him towards the chickens, please. We're not trying to catch him, we're trying to herd him over to the chickens. Go crawl through there. Hey bud, you want to help us catch this chicken? Just herd him to the chickens. We're not catching him because that's the way the gate opens, right, Lily? It opens and he can walk right— there you go. All right, now we can get in there and corner him. Okay, don't count on me, I've got the camera. Good job, Lily. The munchkin's awake. A week and alive. Don't put him too close.
Oh, that's a chicken! It's a chicken! I think he's a little concerned.
Come on.
Like, what is that?
We caught our rogue chicken. Let's just do 3 at a time. You kill it after I get this one out. Okay, Lily, you guys keep them killing it because that's the bottleneck. As fast as y'all are butchering— we want the fat. Oh yeah, oh yeah! You want me to do this thing? Yes. Okay, then keep it— keep us moving. That's what we're talking about, man. That's the good stuff. Look at all the eggs in that one hen. And then look at all the fat on this. That's what I'm talking about. Hmm, man, look at that. Wow. And so far they're all fat. They're all fat inside. Skinny on the outside but fat on the inside. Is that talons?
Can you cut them off?
I cannot think of the word for those extra nails. Yeah, so we killed him because he's the big guy. Look at this beautiful setup. We got testicles, we got eggs, we got necks, feet, heads. Josiah's thinking, why don't we just throw these birds away? I'm thinking, you see the fat on all these birds? Look at that. Soaked in towel because Henry's calling me. Why is he calling me? We're almost done drying some. Should we just keep on going then? I'm afraid it'll bother Mom. Hey, Gideon, don't do that. Oh, you're getting stuff out. Please, I wouldn't splash yourself in the face with it like that. Mom, be careful. Look at all this. Yay or nay on that, guys? I think that's the good stuff. Eggs, testicles, fat, legs. Look at this fat bird. There's a way to take this off and preserve that fat, okay? So save that fat, okay? There is a way to do it though. I think that's true, man. I think my taste buds have been reset. My appreciation for real food. I want to eat liver. I've never wanted to eat liver before. Liver is the superfood. Look at that fat. This side's not so sure, but I am so sure. And especially if we're gonna make chicken sausage. Come on, come on. This is the only— this is the only kind of chicken you want to make chicken sausage with. This side's cleaned up. Here, got the chicken spag. We're gonna do it. We're gonna let them Penderize a little bit. Probably just put it in that. About to have a real good feeling. That's of animal harvest going in the fridge. You're on it. Here, there, you can do this and it'll help. It'll help us stack more. You're there. Are you laying an egg? I've seen some rats down there by the feed. You aren't doing your job. So are you laying— you're gonna lay on us, lay us an egg? And look at you coating our coffee table.
Well, it needed it bad. It needed it about a year.
It's kind of risky out here. How long does that sit out here without a kid bothering it?
Um, I don't have to do it too much longer.
Cat jumping up on it?
No, they haven't so far, so I'm hoping.
Oh my word, it just feels so much better in here. She's wiped everything down. Oh my gosh, look! Thank God we had— we had some extra soup from when I wasn't eating. Boy, that was a good time. Lily just heated that up. I only grabbed 2 quick eggs this morning. It's a good day for tea, isn't it, babe? You making a hot tea? It's so good. It's so nice. Lily's frying me some onions. So you eat though. I want you to eat, okay? My last of He-Man bone marrow bones. But I think we have more from probably Stud Muffin or somebody. Of course, number one, I will never have eggs not over easy. Something happened in the fast intro, over easy with gaps, and I'm— why cook an egg ever again? I was not this way. Interesting how my taste buds change. Round 2. Does that look appealing to you? It's not terrible. And we did it before, I did not appreciate it. I thought it was terrible. Really? Oh yeah. I didn't think it was terrible. But now I, I don't have to eat this. I could eat roasted meat, roasted vegetables at this point. This is what I want.
Yeah, well, your body wants it because it's healthy.
So good. So good on a cold day.
It's like the first kind of cool day.
Flash froze some broth. Well, that was some fat on top of the— on top of the broth for the chicken, because if you're gonna drink it, you don't really want to— you don't really want it fatty. So we froze it into chips, and then we have that. So that's these great chunks. Now the broth isn't fatty, but if we want to add fat to the soup— oh wait, this is maybe lamb. I think this is lamb. Yes, LB. Label this LB. And I reused these bags. Where'd your shirt go? Well, I got it out of mine because the chicken butchering. All right, let's get our shirts on. Do you guys know this was Jonah's shirt? Fits me now. I'm gonna try a persimmon from our farm, uh, compote.
Yes, I just put— I could get it.
Oh, you got your shirt on! We both got our shirt on. I'm gonna try it on pancakes. You think that'll be good? Yeah, on Gaps pancake, which is squash, peanut butter, and vanilla. Is that all it is? Persimmons are loaded in carbs though. So keep my blood sugar low, I'm gonna just take a half of one. Can you get me the— I think I already started a persimmon. Can you get it for me?
I did, I took it, but I couldn't find it.
I put it down. Okay, third portion. Persimmons. I kind of feel like that's going to be weird. That might be weird. Should put a little more butter. Little cinnamon. I think this is going to be weird. Blueberries or strawberries probably would have been better. I think I'll eat this. I don't think I'll do it again. The persimmon kind of has a citrusy kind of feel, so this ain't working. Whatever it feels strawberry and blueberries have, that's what you need. But this isn't terrible. Whoa, you want me to come do my work outside? It's one of my tricks for skipping evening meal. Huge meal at 2 o'clock. Well, I actually ended it at 3. I should still be stuffed in a couple of hours when it's time to eat. Smash that thing! Smash it! Whoa, whoa! All right, good job, dude. He spilled some broth. I stepped in. I'm out of sock. I don't have time to go get another sock on. I'll get one later. Our search for land continues. We have maxed out the pasture we've got. It's $14.50 for unsprayed hay bale around here. One cow eats one bell a day. We, we feeding 100 to 120 days into winter. You do the math, it's crazy. We got 2 or 3 acres. Neighbor said we could do hay there. Traded a van for our— with our assistant. She's got our Suburban getting our books from Virginia. Our ideas to get more land, well, maybe this is 5. Clear. We're gonna clear more forests for pasture. Might try to do more than 2 acres given our circumstances this winter, and we have 2 machines. 2, you can buy hay, probably the easiest and simplest. Could be the most expensive though. 3, certainly rotational graze. You can double your production in just 3 years with rotational grazing. The 4th thing I found is to lease land. You can either grow hay on that or, and/or run animals through that. The 5th one we are doing too is contracting with another farmer who farms like you to raise your part of your herd. Two of our steers are going to go to a guy about an hour away who has an amazing system, and it's cheaper than wintering them with hay. I could be there already.
Yeah, I know.
Okay, go get him.
Does he have to come?
Yes. He'll wreak havoc. Of course, of course, be easier just to go without him. That's an opportunity. Seize it. Seize it to give your wife a rest and to take the children every chance you get. It's a pain. We're sitting here waiting. Uh, last time we went, he wanted to get out. I let him out. He got 3 feet from the car. Swallow guy wasn't there, we had to go back. Which, by the way, we're gonna go see him. See, 2 miles— less than 2 miles away, about a possible 10 acres. Number I have has gone bad, and I'm just trying to catch this guy at home. There he is, Mom! We found him! He went with Josiah to do the calf. This all the eggs we have left? Uh, yeah. Oh boy, hope we didn't stress them out too much today because we're gonna need some eggs. Hey, let's go. I don't think he Well, he'll bother Mom. He'll bother Mom. Okay. Okay, I see a truck there, but then there's a gate. He's got the gate closed and locked. Okay, let's go home and try his number again. I'm wasting a lot of time. Hello, please leave a message after the tone. It's good the phone number was working. I'm just Keep calling every day, guys. You got to be persistent. You want it, you got to want it, as Joel would say. My goal would be between our neighbors and our farm, and when the spring comes, and if we can get— there's some places on this road that I'm going to call that just looks abandoned, uh, between possibly that 10 acres 2 miles away. I don't want to go much further than that or it becomes too— well, for hay I could go further, then you've got to add amendments and stuff, but I'm So I'm kind of looking for a place that you can do animals and hay on. My goal would be buy used hay equipment instead of hay next year. Uh-oh, just— I said the water's not coming off the mountain. He's hooked it up to the well for right now. It's probably a little too late in the day to be fixing that. Let's just make sure The line's all hooked up so we aren't pumping the well all night long. I can tell you right now, we got water coming off the mountain. Okay, we do. We have it right here. Look at that view. I'm in a hurry, stressed out about getting the water going. Supper will be ready soon. I'm gonna be right there one day. This is going to be our graveyard. Lot of death this fall. I'm going to be here one day. I'm not here today though. I'm not here. I'm not here today. Did you figure it out? What? Did you figure it out? What? Some water? Yeah, the cows have water. How'd you do it? I just hooked it up to the house. Okay, you know there's water coming out the end down there. I know. But so that means it's breach from somewhere here to there. Now what I want to make sure is if we hooked up the water down there, it didn't just pump it up the hill and out the breach somewhere. Oh, you did? You turned it off up the hill? Look, I'm gonna be here one day not talking. I'll miss you. I enjoyed life with you, buddy. If there's anything between us, let me know, right? We got to keep working on this though. We got to be ready. It's our graveyard. This is where the view is, and it'll be a sacred place. Don't molest the views by putting a house on it. You'll be bored of it in 2 weeks. Uh, keep the view special. Plus, you don't want to halt resources uphill. You want to let resources come down to you. But don't build in the bottom either, because you don't want to be in the frost pocket. 50 feet. Elevation above the creek. A little permaculture bonus there for you. Is it good? Yeah, stopped up somewhere so it can't go on. Yeah. Okay, Lily, it smells delicious in here. Go get the eggs. We need at least a dozen eggs to be the apron-wearing permaculture chicken tending master. I'll get their food ready for tomorrow. You've got to hurry up and mix our feed. We've got such a busy week. We got to get the gas cabin going. We're gonna go visit another farm this week, maybe take a couple of our steers there. We're gonna have to process those birds we harvested today, and there's no option not to because we don't want them to rot. Get in. How many did you get? What? All right, will you grab this tumbler? Thank you. Bring that in. That's good. Now we have 20 less chickens to feed. We're not getting that many less eggs than we would have today. People were stressed out today, we'll give them that. Lots of eggs into the day. Well, it's enough for tomorrow. We live in egg baskets of egg basket, but we're not guaranteed tomorrow, let alone the day after, so we're good. And we are the night lights. Our eyes are going down with the sun. That's the natural away. Body's winding down. No more TV. It's amazing how quickly we can just get used to that, and this is our life, and how much better we're feeling now. Anyway, happy day. Thanks for coming along with us.
