What’s This Nomadic Gardner Doing?

A traveling family heads to Jim's farm in Maine, stopping to cook and celebrate a viral win that saved a 2,000-acre organic farm from being forced to spray chemicals. Jim farms in both Florida and Maine, and the family will film an instructional video with him tomorrow about rapid planting and regional vegetable growing.

It's all kind of like a mystery. Like, what is Jim up to?
We're about to leave for Jim's, but we got a little bit of a leak in our air conditioning. They say it's because where the water drips out from the air conditioning— yeah, this real scientific explanation here— where the water drips out of the air conditioning has gotten clogged. That means we got to get on the roof. The only way I know how is this way.
Yay! He's up there now.
Where did they say the exit is?
I'm thinking that's on the other side. Yeah, they said it looks like two grommets. Here's a toothbrush.
All right, you guys ready to go?
Yeah, let's go!
We have arrived. Apron time, y'all. Time to cook. We're gonna have an early dinner. We're only, what, 4 miles away from Jim's?
Is that right, Beauty? Yeah, I think we're actually less than 4 miles. I think we're 4 minutes.
Oh my gosh. So we're gonna go to try to find Jim's. So we're gonna have an early dinner and then go see if we can't find it.
What vegetable are we having?
Let's have— I don't know, what vegetables do we have?
I think we have carrots. Kale and broccoli.
This is another classic meal. Frozen vegetables. Chicken thighs fried.
We have kale or carrots.
Or broccoli.
Do kale.
0.13 upload. That's a record. Slowest we had, I think, was 0.64 upload. That was Full Circle Farm. That took 6 hours to upload, so I hope you're seeing this video on time because that's not gonna work. We're gonna have to figure something out.
What are we gonna do?
It'll work.
She thinks it'll work. She thinks it'll work. So that means you're seeing this on time. If it's late, it didn't work, obviously. So the way you'll know, 1 o'clock is when this is supposed to go out. 1 o'clock Saturday, May 20th. While Beauty cooks, I'm gonna come down here with the kids on the playground.
You like this boat or you like that boat?
Whoa! I like that boat! Go, go, go! Quick, quick, quick! Come on, Ringo!
Oh wow, you can go all over this boat.
I know.
Come on up, Brown. You can do it too. Okay, do it.
You want to look?
Okay, do it. You can do that.
Can you do it, guys?
Yeah!
Whoa! Good boy!
Wow, you're doing that far. Grab it.
He just does it with his arm.
You can grab it with your legs.
Yeah.
Who can go up that pole?
Up it!
Up it! I don't know.
All right, let's see you do it. Good job, Jonah.
Good job, Josiah.
Oh, Lily! Whoa, good job! Even the Princess Mermaid. Mr. Brown, are you gonna do it?
You're gonna try though, that's good.
While the kids play, I'm just checking out the private forum under my new membership area, and people are loving it. I just love that they're getting in here and just developing community. Amanda Butler, thanks for getting in here. Casey Oswitch, thank you, buddy. Amanda says, hi to all, I'm so glad to be a part of this group. Many, many people are so happy to be part of this group. People in here from all over the place, from as far down as Florida, as far up as Canada. Some Dude processed his first chicken. He's getting on here, he's getting compliments on that. Good job, Brandon Hosey. Hope I said that name right. Uh, Williams Family Homestead, welcome to the community. Somebody got John Jaskovic's book and they're talking about building his chicken tractor. That's awesome, good job, Charles. Somebody's on here wanting to know what others are using for feed. Oh, Derwood Collins, good job, buddy, you built my chickshaw. Denise Oliver says our vlogs have been their reward for a very productive last year. Oh yeah, they're from Canada. Oh, Robbie Almond, so happy to be part of the group. So happy to have you, buddy. Ken Randall, I love you. You're one of our biggest fans, buddy. That was the guy we stayed with in the Outer Banks.
Our hosts are driving us around. I hope you can hear me with all this wind. Here are our hosts. You guys tell me your names and what you're growing. My name is Ken. We got potatoes planted right now. I got some Tomatoes and eggplant, peppers still to put in pots.
Somebody was saying, who else YouTubes? And it looks like we got several replies. And Matt Hefner, thank you very much, buddy. For those who don't know, Matt Hefner is in here. He's helping me with this. I could not do this without Matt. He's— he helps me with the technical sides of it. He helps me with some of the marketing. He's in here helping maintain the community. I also have a friend at home, Heather St. Jock. She's the one who approves you guys. It would not be possible without my team. But Matt's in here moderating. He's letting you know when new videos are going up. He's doing an awesome job.
Thank you, Matt. Let's do one more.
Chris House, welcome to the house, buddy, all the way from Georgia. Thanks for joining. Chad Ray, thank you for joining, all the way from Texas. Jordan McNutt, I'm glad you're excited to be part of the group and excited to have you. For those of you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm pro— I'm talking about my new member area. This is the private Facebook group. If you guys are interested in being a part of this community, check out my new member area. It's for sale for a limited time. I'm uploading instructional videos there, adding to a library continually, and we have this private member area.
Do check it out. It's up for a limited time. Another cool thing about this forum is I'm gonna go see Jim tomorrow. He gardens both Florida and Maine. We're gonna go check out his Maine operation tomorrow. We're definitely gonna do an instructional video with him. And so I asked this community, what kind of instructional video would you like to see? What would you like to learn from him? All kinds of good questions. They're such good questions. I said, well, that will be an instructional video. I'll just ask these questions. How do you quickly get started in a new area? Great question.
Do different vegetables do better in different places?
Great question.
Oh, what happens to your gardens when you leave, when you leave Florida? And then what happens to your garden when you leave Maine?
Excellent questions.
How do you go about finding customers being in two different places?
I think we can learn a lot from this guy because he's got to do these things quick, plant quick, find customers quick. So no matter if you're nomadic or not, we're going to learn a lot from this guy. And that instructional video will be in the member area.
Now the kids want me to take them down to the lake.
Did the playground thing. Don't go floating off.
All right, just, uh, jump it. Oh, I just thought of something. This is really good news. You guys remember when we went live several days ago, we talked about how, as your standard, their organic farm, their 2,000-acre organic farm, the county was going to enforce them to spray that would cause them to lose their organic certification and force them to do that and force them to pay for it, by the way. And we asked you guys to email in and request that they not do that. Well, guess what? With you guys and with many other people, apparently it went viral. We got word today it's not happening. They're not going to be forced to do that. It works.
The power—
good job, guys. High five. I wish I could. I wish I could. Virtual high five. Oh, and Papa Bear hugs.
Here, I'll hold you. Oh, whoa!
Papa's rocking the boat. Papa's rocking the boat.
No! No!
No?
Woo! Smells good in here. It's nice and cozy in here too. It is. How's it coming?
It's coming along.
Oh my gosh. You're making a—
Chocolate pudding pie.
Ooh.
I love you.
I know you do.
Fried chicken thighs.
Yep.
Kale and sweet potato fries in there.
Yep.
Woo!
I made it up, y'all. How's your dinner, guys?
Good. Good.
We're starting to feel like we're far from home. At first it was like, since we're traveling so slow, it just kind of didn't feel like anything.
But now, now we are, as of right now, 1,258 miles from this campground to our house.
We saw a Canadian border. There's Canadian flags. It's just crazy. It's a different landscape. It just, we just felt like we're far from home.
Yeah.
And we are. 19 hours it would take us.
It would take us 19 hours to get home. We would arrive at 1:15 tomorrow afternoon if we left right now.
Yeah. It's crazy.
We are on our way trying to find gems. It looks like we're on the right path.
There's a white— yep, the driveway before the white barn with the green roof. We have arrived. Jim is not here. The owner is here. They said we could look around. Jim is expecting us tomorrow, which is fine. Totally understand that. We'll be back tomorrow, but let's get a glimpse of what we're going to see tomorrow. It looks like freshly planted onions. I wonder if those are what he started in Florida. You think those are his Onion starts in Florida.
Oh, I don't know.
I don't know.
Does he do that? I'm not sure what he does.
He brings up his onion starts. Oh, starts them in Florida, brings them to Maine. This looks like a garden bed. Looks like he's been mowing, but he doesn't use just a regular mower. He uses a scythe. So I'm very interested to see if we can't give— get a demonstration from him on that tomorrow. It's all kind of like a mystery, like what is Jim up to? Or are some of the owners? But I know he had apple trees. Look, we got apple trees in bloom. Look at the grass cutting pattern. More onions. She said his camp's down on the water. We're not going to get too close to that, respect his privacy. This is a really cool guy. Camps out by the river in Maine all summer. Farms Maine. Then in the winter goes and farms Florida. Somebody said they'd like to see his winter growing plan for Maine. I said his winter growing plan is Florida. I can see the use of some of these grass clippings. He's mulched the side of this bank. A lot of questions. Can't wait till we see what Jim's up to.
