When chickens (or kids) destroy your garden

In this informal homestead vlog, the host (Victor) walks viewers through a day of farm chores and family moments centered around a garden that was damaged—likely by chickens or the children. He explains the problem of chickens accessing the garden, demonstrates wing‑clipping to control them, and shares a practical tip: plant 25% more than needed because kids will inevitably trample crops. The family then tackles various tasks: catching a loose cow named Violet, repairing fences, and building a fire pit for hot‑dog cooking. Throughout the video, Victor promotes the recently launched "Great American Farm Tour" documentary bundle, citing Kickstarter numbers, live‑event attendance, and enthusiastic viewer testimonials that highlight the film’s impact on loneliness and confidence among homesteaders. The vlog blends instructional moments (animal handling, safety, garden management) with promotional messaging and a warm, family‑centric narrative.

Do you see the empty jars there? I was actually saying something there. I did a whole bit this morning and came back inside and realized the mic was not on. So let me walk you through it. Those empty jars, it wasn't happening this morning because I was hopeful. Yeah, and we had milked probably 2 gallons. I'm sure 2 gallons. Unfortunately, Violet nicked the top of it with her hoof. I think I saw some.
I stood right here.
I stood right here and told Jonah, and we all laughed. We saw some butt juice get in there, I think. You know, she nicked it and I saw some stuff running. I wiped it down, you know, but I just— it's just not worth the risk. Then Joan and I went out and we showed you our chicken garden miracle. One of the struggles anyone's going to have with that is chicken and garden are close. It's a great idea, but you got to make sure the chickens don't cross over. I believe maybe they did and ate the vegetables. Jonah, on the other hand, seems to think it was Lily and Gideon. Which I don't put it past them. I remember him coming and telling me about it, and I stopped them, and I told him to tell them I said to stop, and I believe they did. But still, Jim and I searched in there and we don't see any greens. I think the greens would be in there, they would just be smashed. I think it was the chickens. What we're gonna do is clip their wings. But oh my gosh, they're out! The kids must have not put them up last night. So we're gonna corner them, clip their wings one at a time, and put them in the chicken tractor so we know who we've done and who we haven't. Towards the end of the chicken clipping, I began to answer what someone asked at the premiere. It's a great question: how do you get your children involved? And I said, one, you let them be involved, and two, you plant 25% more than you think you need because children will smash it. Thus is the case. Thankfully, beautiful one planted a bazillion kales. And I think that's what it was that got destroyed. So we're good, we're going to replant those when it gets warmer today in the afternoon. Afternoon chore time— I should say evening. Had a big, big day in there launching the Great American Farm Tour. If you missed yesterday's video, I've worked all day on that thing. Ended up being a beast in and of itself, promoting the documentary bundle. If you haven't seen that Go check it. Basically, it's one way to solve two major problems of the homesteader: loneliness and the feeling of being inept. So the— what are you talking about, Mr. Brown? Like old times, man. Got you on my back. We gotta go catch Bear, put him up. I don't think we're gonna have time to plant those, replace those Missing plants. Hey guys, what's going on? His collar came off.
Yeah, he was going crazy in like this grass. Okay, we almost caught him. All right, Papa, but you know that wire that we— that you put inside the paddocks? We put that up. Okay, put up the wires.
Why?
No, you'll see.
You put up the—
no, they're not eating fresh grass.
I think you put up the one that we're gonna It was going to be the wall for today, wasn't it? I think you pulled it up and it needs to go in.
No, look, I'll show you.
Can you guys move these out of the path?
Yeah, we put it up, Papa, because there was not— there was not one there. We put it up.
Oh, good, good. Sometimes we can grab Bear if he's got a collar on and we don't have to herd Violet all the way in just to bring her all the way back out. We have to bring Violet in. How you doing, Violet? We gotta bring you in so we can get Bear in the saw.
Do they wash their faces?
I don't think so. So you think we can hurt him from here?
No.
Try, try. Okay, you probably can't cuz he'll run. The fence isn't up up there. See how the fence is?
Come on, bird's done gone back into the field.
Okay, let's just Let's get her in. Come on. Yeah, I guess that's how it goes. She done got in the stanchion. Bring him up. Next time we gotta put that fence down. Oh, he didn't— he made it. All right, come on, bring him in, bring him in. Okay, we'll have to tell her. Come on. All right, back out, back out. We'll see you later, Violet. Hey, can you say bye, Violet? Can you say bye, Violet? Bye, Violet. We'll see you at dark 30 tomorrow. Because why do you think we're getting up so early tomorrow, Mr. Brown? Somebody's calling about 6:30 in the morning. Who would call? Who in their right mind would call as early as 6:30 in the morning? Any guesses?
Yeah.
Who? Uh, just Taya? No, everybody. Azariah gonna call at 6:30? What? No, shoot, I forgot. I forgot to move the cows, open them up to new grass. Hi again, sweet thing. The boys said they put it up. Let's inspect. It's connected there. Now mind you, these boys are only 10 and 8. It looks good. Those boys are either competent or this job is so easy even little boys can do it. I say both. Johnny, you did a good job putting up that fence. Are you comp— I'll let you down in a second, Mr. Brown. Mr. Brown wants to go to the fire pit. Gonna make them hot dogs in a second.
Okay, what did you want to ask me?
Are you competent or was that job just super easy?
Super easy. And we had nothing to do.
And he's humble too, I guess. Not yet. We got to go tell Mama where we're gonna be. Real quick, before we cut to the part where we go do the fire pit with the kids, hang on for that. It's a lot of fun. Wait till you see the stove they built. We're in the midst of the launch of the Great American Farm Tour. Documentary bundle is going absolutely great. Look at me in the eyes, you customers. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for ordering that. A ton of people are ordering it, being inspired, making change in the world. We had over 2,200 Kickstarters, hundreds of pre-orders, 300 people at the live event, millions and millions of views on the YouTube channel when we were doing the tour. And I had hoped with all my heart. I think what happened was even beyond what I could imagine hoping for. That people would like it and enjoy it and change for the better. I think they liked it. And they do. Check out what just one person said about it. This person, Theresa. We visited her on the Great American Farm Tour. She's up in Maine. She has that blueberry farm. Listen to what she says. You did an amazing job and it was for everyone. Everything you had hoped for. We laughed, we cried, we learned, and we were all inspired to do, to be, and to try to live more fully than before. It encouraged all of us, no matter where we are in life, to do more, to care more, to connect with one another more, and to live more intensely with what we have. Thank you, Teresa. That was very sweet. Amy at Aim High Homestead: I just finished watching the Great American Farm Tour. Best thing I have ever watched in my life. that was all caps, by the way. Thank you so much to you and your family for sharing this. I've been feeling down and out, and this just brought me back to life. Lastly, Jen M, thank you for the good review. Here it is. I hope you know you guys have been the inspiration behind my little family in Eastern Washington starting our own garden and raising chickens. My chickens will be a year old in 2 weeks. Been watching you for 3 years. I watched all the vlogs all the way through for the tour. I love the way you compressed them all into one polished feature film. Great job, you guys. Now you can finally rest. My 2-year-old fell asleep watching this, but he is the beautiful one's biggest fan. I encourage you guys right now to go ahead and check out the documentary bundle. We got some specials going on. Check out the description. I guarantee you'll be inspired. If you're not inspired, no worries. Your money back, no questions asked. Because when you're inspired, you have hope. And as John Maxwell says— as John Maxwell says, Where there is no hope in the future, there is no power in the present. So let's get some hope in the future and power in the present. Let's go check out this fire pit. What have you guys built here? You've got your kindling, you've got your bench, we've got our hot dogs.
Water for safety.
Oh, water. What's the safety for?
Water.
Okay, to put out the fire if it gets out of control? You got matches, you got a grill cleaner. Light it up. Hold it on there, hold it on there so it catches real good. It wouldn't kill you to have more paper. I'd say we got a fire going. We don't need any more dried grass.
They want for me. You can sit on— I'll sit on this.
I'm gonna put them further back so they don't burn. They warm up slowly. Somebody explain to me what that is.
Just the little entrance thing.
Look who we have here!
I told him to follow me.
You come to get a hot dog? We saved one for you. No, we didn't.
No, he said no, we didn't.
No, I came to, uh, I was invited by a young man, so I thought I'd come.
Oh, that's nice. And I told him.
So you brought your blueberries? I did. I brought some blueberries. Is it warm? Hey, they say smoke follows beauty.
Hot towel, mine! Hot towel, mine! Hot towel, mine!
You ready for yours? Yeah.
Okay. This one's mine.
Let me see if it's too hot. Let me see if it's too hot.
I'm not going to drop it.
It is a little hot.
Put it on this, Papa.
Hold on, it's a little hot. Let's cool it off on this stick for you. Okay, just hold it there until it cools off. Okay?
Okay, I need my—
All right, put that in there.
Pour it out?
Yeah, pour it out.
