Why Lie Down to Die When You Can Walk?

A farmer in a wheelchair coordinates family chores on their farm while reflecting on perseverance through a metaphor about desert survivors who keep walking. They announce a new show called A New Family, A Different Story for their Abundance Plus network, and celebrate the season's first red tomato and abundant squash harvest.

Okay, get in. Thank you so much for doing your own snack this morning. Everybody's been having to step it up a notch, and I think that's, that's a good thing. Lily, have you done your rabbit chores? Did you do the manure? Okay, do that. Bucket and a flat shovel. Yep, yep, fill a bucket up with a flat shovel and I'll show you where to put it. As I push through the painting this morning, I think, well, what else would I do? Would I just go lay, sit on the recliner, go back and forth from that in the bed?
I don't know.
I thought I'd left them enough time to get back by now, which is 7:30. Sam and John are in town at Grandma's, Grandpa's, and they rode their bikes down there to see if they could come. That's cool. We've got one less chore because Everflow Waterer is It's been working so good. Almost a week now. Rebecca's garden is just jamming. She's coming out soon and we're gonna— she said there's a red tomato. It'll be our first red tomato of the season. That squash plant has just been crazy, and I see more. Oh, look at this one! She trellised it and it's working. Can you come, come grab this squash right here? You see it? This one? Yep, yep. Good. Chicken food. Now this is being kind of a mulch. I should have said I need you back by 7:30. I thought that 30 minutes was enough time. I didn't make it clear that I wanted them back so he could help. Right down there, Gideon. This one's overlapped. Oh yeah, mucho. Some are even too big. Don't get the tiny ones, but get the bigger ones. Okay. Oh, thanks, my man. Yeah, that one got too big. So get the other ones that are medium-sized. That one's better. All right, let's bring those two and the other third one inside, and then you can finish your snack. I'm not much physical help. I'm slow help, if anything. But I go back to that book, Deserts, uh, Skeletons on the Sahara. Scrape up all the poop?
Not all of it. I scraped as much as I could. There's still a little bit of poop.
Oh, did you guys see that? It's a minivan. They brought the boys back. Hey boys, what were you doing honking your shoes when they showed up? Waiting and watching them, and they were— you were watching a movie? Yep. Okay, well now we're gonna live a movie. And the movie is called Everyday Chores. Not the most exciting movie in the world. They didn't get my dad joke. Hey, what, y'all don't want to be movie stars in Everyday Chores? All right, let's get on my wheelchair here, Cubby. Here's the thing about that story of survival in the desert. They're all pretty much hit a low pretty much laying down in their hopelessness to die. They're going, and they're going around and making decisions about what to do, and they're pretty much all resolving to lay down and die in hopelessness. One of them said, what's the point of laying down and die when we can walk? I don't think I'm gonna die. This is not anywhere near a severe situation. But yeah, what's What's the point of laying down when you can walk? I'm gonna walk until I can't. Hey boys, why is the chickshaw out?
I had to get it out because it was in there and the film crew had to film.
Okay, can we put it back? Thank you for doing that. Check the water for me. Is it good?
Yeah, he says good.
Just tell me the story about the rat this morning.
I was feeding the pigs and the rat ran out of his hole and ran into the brush.
So you saw the rat and the pigs?
Yeah.
Well, I kind of hope it hangs out because them pigs will eat that rat. We got to get onions up. Yes, I'm thinking me, you, and Arun, maybe another one child.
No, I think me and Arun.
Me and you and Arun? Yeah, we'll go do the sheep and they'll go do the onions.
You'll have to hold the baby though.
Don't jump up and down too much with excitement. Sam looks— who's he talking to? Who's he talking about?
I'm gonna go get Lily and she can help hold the baby.
Okay, that That's what I'm talking about. A child can help us with that. We've been curing our garlic, so it's been a couple of weeks.
You want to go inside a little bit, make it—
yeah, now that it's more dry. Yeah, hey guys, guys, now that this garlic is more dry, maybe not quite yet cured, we can put it— consolidate it more, scrunch it up more.
Please do this right, I'm begging you. Look at me, look at me.
Yes, Mama, please.
This is our garlic.
I think they might be in a hurry to go play.
That's what I'm saying.
Let's consolidate it all to one side too so that one whole side can be onions. This beautiful garden, it's jamming! Do you see this? It's sprawling. Sweet potatoes. What's this? Some sort of squash. Uh, acorn. And what's that big one?
I think it's also acorn.
Yay!
Maybe done at different times. I don't know what it is.
Winter squashes, my favorite. Today we're gonna have them pull up these onions. All right, you guys got this? Yep, you hit the bottom. Nice. Last time you had a bumper crop of onions. Nothing there except for that one. Here's the other thing, I feel best in the morning, so I'm gonna do all my professional work Vlogging. I am a professional. This is my job. This is my job. Rebecca, you're gonna have some crazy tomatoes and some crazy beans. We asked Joe about this lack of luster right here in the middle, and he just thought over the years, as we add the bedding and more manure, this, this, this place is just gonna jam. Yeah, so this is just the first planting.
Oh look!
I need—
I got 2 cucumbers right there. I got 3 cucumbers.
Are you having no problems with your peppers? And no, in that section, this section suffers. That section is doing pretty good. I see a red tomato, maybe 2. Ding ding ding ding ding!
I got one last night too.
Dan, cue the epic music!
It's exciting, we're gonna have tomato cucumber salad soon. Onions, tomatoes, and cucumbers from the garden.
Wow.
Dill too. Wow, so awesome.
We're just gonna open this gate and then they're gonna be able to go right in. We could take the chance and hope that the sheep come and the cows don't interfere, or we could herd the sheep to this one side and then put a 50-foot net across.
Great.
Looks, looks like the cows are already wanting to interfere. We could wait on Arun. Arun will be here in just one second. He might not bother you if he's distracted down here. Here comes my right hand and left and right foot. Dad joke. She's not laughing. You know it's a dad joke and the only person that laughs is the dad. Look, look at Arun. His mom would be proud. I wish your mom had internet in India because she would be so proud.
See, I have internet.
Oh yeah? She ever seen the vlog?
I don't know, actually. Come on now, somebody has to help her actually to get the vlog.
All right, well, let's help her get her this show. Tell your mom hello and you love her in Hindi.
Okay. Oh, in here?
Yeah.
Okay, so, okay. Oh, this is for my mom?
Yeah.
Okay. Aww, that's sweet.
All right, now she's got— now he's got to get her to watch it. He just said she's not going to understand anything being said except for what he just said. I guess she only speaks Hindi. We came out here last night and Dixie, we were going to treat her, but she was, she was grazing. A thunderstorm was coming on. They do bad in the evenings. We're like, okay, just leave it. We're gonna do it one more treatment in the morning, and then she's gonna have to, she's gonna have to kick it, which I think she is gonna. Uh, Rebecca's getting the lambs down. Here they come. I'm afraid they're not going to come in here with Flossie standing right there.
You want all the sheep or one?
All of them. But let's get Flossie out first.
Look at Flossie, you have to get up.
Hey, you know who else doesn't speak English? That cow. You might as well tell Flossie that in Hindi, that wasn't— make no difference. All right, they got the queen out of the section there. Queen Flossie. Now they're gonna get the sheep in there. That's smart. Come on, Mark, get them from that end. Here comes Stud. You got them in, all but one. The one we need too. Mom's opening the gate here. I don't think it's gonna reach. It's gonna come pretty close. Maybe I can fill the gap. Here they come. Help herd them in. Go herd them in. Oh, do you think you can administer this up there without Jonah? Yeah. You know, they should be done with onions by now. Mom gets with it. Good job. Her udder is deflating more, which is a good sign. Okay guys, they're putting the fence back. Look at the calf. Is she 5 days old? Come on, Henry. 8, 9 days old. 9 days. She's out running around. There it goes, there it goes. So that the big cows can get over and we can milk. Look, that one is feeling good. Cow number 2. Going through this actually makes me very thankful for a job like this because I can think of few jobs that you can still do without a functioning right hand, hurting left and right foot. But we're able to pull it off, so I'm thankful for that. I'm thankful for you guys sticking with me through this, bearing with me, enduring, uh, the content that is real life that's not always exciting and thrilling and big accomplishments. Normally I like to do projects every day, and they're picking on the fence. They figured out it's not on. Lately the project is just maintaining what we have. There's nothing, uh, new going on, so say maybe the rabbits, but that would have been planned for months. It's a tricky situation because 3 months is kind of a long time, but maybe it's not long enough to make some hard decisions about downgrading the farm. So we're kind of in my, like, survival for 3 weeks, 3 months, see what happens with this thing, uh, and hope it's not long-term because that would probably— that realistically probably mean some downgrades. Dixie, you're gonna have to kick it, honey. This is gonna be the test. You can do it. Again, we're having trouble getting this trailer off, so we put a 4x4 under the, the wheel so that we can lift it up enough. Even backing all the way to the end, I think this is kind of locking. Even though we've unlatched it, I think it's kind of hanging on to it. There you go. There it let go.
We just had to get high enough.
That worked good. We can do that with the 4x4. I don't see any harm in that.
Yeah, we're there. We're good.
I'm doing Abundance Plus texts like this, going in here and Literally, I can do one finger here, but we're getting it done. One finger here, and I got this finger. I don't think I can sit down and type. Well, maybe I could. Pretty close, but this is working. I can make phone calls. About to FaceTime an Abundance Plus original show, A New Family, A Different Story. More on that coming soon. I'll be hashing out some of the details with them right now, and we'll be announcing that Very soon, like early August-ish. Just got off the phone, man. That re-energized me. There's something special about taking Abundance Plus and making it a network. That means we're going to work with other people. There's energy and ideas there, and I have an idea and they have an idea. Wasn't that fun?
It is.
Don't we have some good stuff in store? We do. For everyone.
We do. And we realize we're not everybody's cup of tea, and that's okay.
Yeah. But we got some good stuff in store. Yes, where everybody's brought to be good for the soul. Gonna be good for the soul. That's right, we're gonna be good for the soul, are we? Yeah, really? Really?
What do you say?
You're this easy.
