EP52 Mindset Monday - Positive and Negative Energy
28 Jan 2026 · 12 min
Episode (approx. 10 minutes) of the Mindset Monday podcast featuring Kari Schneider, a high-performance coach. Schneider defines how emotions are naturally in motion and outlines common negative energy drivers—scarcity mindset, comparison, 'dirty yes' commitments, over-scheduling, bodily acidity/stress, and creating dependency—and how these lead to depleted energy and limiting emotion. She then lists positive practices that restore energy: laser focus, flow, complete accountability, abundant thinking, alkaline/self-care habits, white space, and sustainable actions. The episode includes a brief personal anecdote, a promotional call-to-action for Kari’s online training programs, and an invitation for listener feedback.

So in case anyone doesn't know me that well, then I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Kari Schneider. I've been a high performance coach for over 20 years and love to motivate, train, inspire people to live their best lives. So I'm constantly asking, is this the best I can be? And motivating others and teaching others. So welcome top performers. We've got positive and negative mindset. Now. We had an incredible, incredible teacher at the course I was in last week. His name is Master Ko and one of the things he said that I wrote down is that it is the nature of emotion to constantly be in motion. So I'm going to repeat that it is the nature of emotion to constantly be in motion. And oftentimes we go and take the thoughts of negative versus positive and always wanting to be in the positive without really embracing the whole thing, the concept that there's always going to be negative and there's always going to be positive. Our whole experience of emotion is going to encompass both. So one of the ways, and this is critical, whether you are in business or sport or parenting or life or whatever you're doing, one of the ways to really get the most out of your emotion is to understand what's going on on the negative side of things and understand what's going on on the positive side of things. And this is going to be individual to you. So, so it's one thing for someone to say, think positive or don't think negative. But for you, you may not recognize the things that are causing positive energy or causing negative energy in your life. And once you can recognize them, they will be critical in giving you the state that you want for your sport, your life, your work, whatever it is that you're focusing on. So I'm going to give you a few things that I've noticed in a lot of my clients, my athletes and myself that kind of they encompass the negative side of things or they encompass the positive side of things. So see if you recognize some of these because they are things that I think can creep in without us realizing and then they contribute to negative thoughts and then ultimately negative action or overall emotions because those thoughts will lead to your emotions. So on the negative side of things, having some thoughts around scarcity or a lack of mindset so there's not enough or competing with someone else because if you don't get it, then someone else will. So that lack or that scarcity mindset, that would be one. Another one is comparison. There's a common thing I'll say, and that is that comparison is the thief of joy. And I can't remember who originally said that, but it's a quote that I adopted a long time ago and, and remind myself continuously because that's something that I'll fall into comparing comparison is the thief of joy. Another one that I'm very aware of for my clients, my family is a dirty yes. The dirty yes would be that kind of thing where you don't really want to do the thing but you say yes and then you're regretting it or you don't like that you have to follow through on the thing you said yes to. So dirty yeses tend to be real negative or energy suckers. These are things that pull your energy away from you being overly apologetic. So if we're finding we're constantly apologizing for this or that, then chances are there's a lot of dirty yeses or we're not really committed or feeling aligned with the things that we are doing because we're apologizing. Another one is another action or negative thought. Pattern is constantly scheduling yourself. So if you're over scheduled, you're not honoring yourself or the people you're with in creating a schedule that is in alignment with who you are and what you want to accomplish. So if you're over scheduling, overbooking, it's going to leave you with not only that feeling of lack, but also losing time. Another action would be having that acidic body and that would come from increased cortisol, so too much stress. It would come from eating a lot of meat, not getting enough water, not having enough vegetables, too much sugar, too much alcohol. So acidity in your body is going to be another thing that causes that negative energy. But also then the negative thoughts or negative emotions, another one is creating, taking actions that create a lot of dependency. So if you find you're having the thoughts that say, oh, well, I'm the only one that can do this or I better do it myself because they can't do it, you're probably doing things or taking actions that cause people to have to depend on you because you've set it up that way. So those are a number of things that will create that negative energy or the negative thoughts. And then ultimately the negative emotion, that's typically the pattern or the sequence that it goes in. And it's going to leave you feeling heavy or scarce or overwhelmed or overstretched or in a state of feeling like you have to prove yourself versus feeling confident and aligned. So this is that negative list. Now if we do the flip side, because it doesn't mean that it's bad, even though those things are happening, it doesn't mean it's bad. It's the things to be aware of so you understand what actions you can take on the other side. Because it's easy to fall into those thought patterns, those energy states, and ultimately those emotions. So let's look at the other side. Here's the positive. Some of the things that really serve positive energy, things like laser focus, so that you're not trying to do five things at once. You've got one thing blocked or one thing blocked for time. And that's all you're going to focus on for that time, that laser focus, which leads into my next one, which is flow. When you have laser focus, it's only with laser focus that you're going to get into a state of flow. And that state of flow is when you lose time, you lose awareness of anything else but what you are working on. You can get this in a high performance sporting events. You can get this in workflow, all sorts of. When you're out in nature, flow. Flow is in a magical, magical state. And that flow creates a lot of positive energy. So laser focus leading into flow, body moving can be a very, very positive energy state. Another one is complete accountability. This one is hard for a lot of people. We like to look at other circumstance or other people as causes for what's happening with us. And that's not the Case other people do not cause our emotions, other things or circumstance do not cause our energy to be in a certain state. If it's cloudy out or sunny out, that doesn't cause our state. So when we take complete accountability, that brings us positive energy. So we understand that we have control ourselves, not the other things or people around us. So complete accountability, abundant thinking, knowing and understanding that there is enough for everyone in any possible realm. Whether it is food, whether it's energy, whether it's work, whatever it happens to be, there's enough abundance for everyone that causes us to share and be far more generous in our own actions. Another one is alkaline. So creating alkaline states in our body is going to give us energy. This can mean eating lots of greens, leafy foods, berries, all of those things, reducing the sugar intake, adding in such habits that create a lower stress environment, thereby creating more alkalinity, less acidity, self care, doing things that serve our body, mind and our soul, that might be music, meditation, other little things that make us feel special, that too is going to reduce the cortisol and that physical state again, increasing our energy and our abundance. White space. This is the complete opposite of the over scheduled. When you see your schedule, whether it is on paper or on the computer, and you see white space, that is the kind of thing that allows more abundance and also sustainable actions. So whether it means your scheduling, whether it means how you're eating, whether it means the waste you produce, whether you're living more of a minimalistic lifestyle, that sustainable actions also play into greater energy. Sustainable actions, how we live our lives, how we schedule ourselves, all of these things are going to contribute to greater energy, greater abundant feeling. And the feelings that come from it are ones of lightness, freedom, fun and more energy. And those are the types of things that also allow us to create more in what we can give to other people. So that's a big summary of different actions or ways of being that you can start to recognize. So you can see when those things are going to start to pull your energy down and what you can do to bring your energy back up. Because you know in those energetic states, which either one of them are fine, but when you can recognize them, then you have the power to make the choice and do some things that change it more towards that positive side or more towards that positive energy state then allowing you to have more of what you want and what you want to give to other people. So I hope that serves you today in our mindset. Monday I'll be doing these every Monday. Sometimes I don't on weeks that I travel. And at the same time, please consider contribute. Put your thoughts in here. What are some of the things that are your actions that contribute to the negative energy or the positive energy? Other things that are ideas or things you experience that you can share in the comments below. So pop a thumbs up if this has resonated with you and I hope you have a fantastic day. Create it. Create that ultimate accountability. Create the day for yourself. Have a good one guys. Talk to you next time. Sam.
