EP78 Mindset Monday - Human Doing vs Human Being
28 Jan 2026 · 8 min
Kari Schneider contrasts being task-driven with identity-centered living using the 'be, do, have' framework: adopt the identity you want first, then the actions and results follow. This approach works better for sport, business, teams, and personal life than grinding through tasks without knowing who you're becoming.

Hey, hey, hey. Happy Monday, guys. So I have a big week coming up. Just about to head on the road tomorrow for a convention for Doterra and then to Minnesota to see my aunt. And it puts me in the mode of doing all sorts of things. Doing, doing, doing. Gotta do all the task list to pack, to get the things done around the house. It's the weekend to clean up, to get the groceries, and I thrive on getting tasks done. I love the feeling of having a whole bunch that needs to be done and just knocking that stuff off the list. And for those of you who are really driven and your top performers, you probably feel that way, too. I know there's probably a few of you who might do what I do, which is have this thing that got done, but it wasn't on your list. And so you write it on your list so you can cross it off. So that's how much I love the feeling of getting tasks done. Hey, Holly. So when this happens, though, there's a blessing and a curse or the pluses and the minuses to everything that exists. And if we look at this in that human doing, loving the tasks, getting into that do mode, getting the stuff done, those benefits are huge. We get that dopamine hit just from crossing something off a list. We get that satisfaction from seeing what we wanted get done. We get that feeling of fulfillment because we feel like we're progressing forward. And progressing forward is huge for human fulfillment. So there's all these positive feedback loops that we get from doing our tasks, and we keep going and going and going and going. But there's a huge drawback. And that drawback is that sometimes we get so caught up. Hey, Michael. We get so caught up in doing and doing that we forget about who we're being. So I've seen this for myself, where I'll be so caught up in getting something done that I'll be dismissive of my kids, or I won't have any sort of connection with my husband, or maybe I won't be as engaged into the joy of what it's feeling like to get my workout in. So instead I'm just knocking off the exercises or knocking off the tasks because I want to feel that good feeling of getting it done. And so what's missing and this huge part of miss, this huge part of it, the missing. And that is the who we are being and the who I am being. So getting back into who you're being in anything that you're doing is critical for having lasting fulfillment. Otherwise, in all of the human doing, you're going to have this fleeting fulfillment in getting the task done. Oh, got that done, got that done. Feel exhausted at the end of the day, feels kind of good. But then you look back and there might have been those moments where you didn't feel joyous or you didn't feel connected to your family or your co workers. You were very disjointed from them because you were just focusing on the task. So being a certain way first is huge in having more fulfillment in all of the things that you're doing. And as a general rule, if you want to look at this, the rule goes be, do, have. If there's a result that you want, say it's working out, say it's connection with family, say it's a world championship, say it's earning more money in your business, say it's getting the next promotion or the next raise, say it's getting to that fitness goal that you've never gotten to before that have. We always automatically think that we have to do X, Y, Z to get that have but reality in order to do it with fulfillment and not end up with the result feeling empty and feeling like, oh, well done it yuck. Without feeling empty. The way you have to do it is start with a B by being the way you want to feel. Once you've achieved your result, that is going to give you far more fulfillment in the process. So if you want to be someone who's achieved a fitness goal and you associate that fitness goal with someone who feels happy, someone who has energy, someone who's vibrant, someone who's connected with others, then that's what you have to start being right now. Before the doing, before the action that's being taken to get to that result. So it's be, do have. And then that connects you back into being a human being instead of a human doing that human doing will feel good for very short moments and maybe the day. But the human being where you're really connected to who you are, who you're being connected to other people connected to your best life and your best energy and your best vibrance and connecting that to your doing and your tasks and all of your action that is going to give you the results that end up being far more fulfilling, having far more connection and far more joy and gratitude and happiness and energy along the way. So it's not just about getting that results. We end up being so result focused in people who are type A driven, athlete based, performance based. So those results are a big, big focus. However, you can still have far more satisfaction, far more fulfillment by focusing on who you're being along the way. Be, do and then have. So I hope this lands for you. I hope this provides a little insight to where you are today. You are at the beginning of the week. Usually a beginning of the week means that there's lots going on and lot to do for the rest of the week. So while you're getting caught up in all that action, remember who are you being? Who do you want to be? Create that best being for the best action and the best results and the most fulfillment. Have a fantastic day. If this resonated with you, pop me a thumbs up or a little heart and pop a comment comment in there. If there's something that you have been noticing about all your task driven action and action is good. But remember who you're being along the way. Have a wonderful week everybody.
