Peak performance coach Kari Schneider explains Triple Vision: holding three linked goals at once—now (daily), next (near-term), and end (legacy)—to stay present while moving forward. She developed it with the women's national hockey team during their Sochi Olympic cycle and shows how it works in sport, career, relationships, and self-care.

Our topic today is called Triple Vision. I love this topic. I can't even believe we haven't done this topic before because I talk about it so much. It's a fantastic topic for sport and career, for relationships, for life, for our self care. It's amazing. So triple vision. Here's why I'm surprised I haven't talked about this is because I talk about it so much. In our power up and in our power up in the reset. It's this morning, little portion of our beginning day where we set an intention for the day. We might do some movements and breathing, might tell a story, might share, but at the same time we're setting an intention for the day. And I've used this in all four of our power ups over the last year or our resets, I should say over the last year because it's such a powerful tool to make sure that you're going forward in a way that's staying very present. So this is what triple vision is. Triple vision, if you take your three fingers and you hold them up like you're holding up the number three and then you turn it sideways so you're looking at them from the side, you see your first finger and then you see your second one just a little further down and you see your third finger further than that. That is how we want to see this triple vision. What triple vision literally is, is the.
Ability to see your now goals, your.
Next goals and your end goals with clarity and connection. They all connect to one another.
So you want to see these three.
Goals clearly and you want to see.
How they relate from one to the next.
Now where this concept came from was when I was working with the women's national hockey team in around 2011-2014 going into the Sochi gold, and the sports psychologist that was working with the team had put this concept out to the team called triple vision so that the.
Athletes could stay focused on the end.
Goal, which was an Olympic gold, and.
Also be focused on what needed to come before the Olympics, which was a qualifier.
They had to qualify for the Olympics as well as focusing on the now, the present, the day to day, everything.
That needed to happen day to day, but who they needed to be on.
The day to day. So that's where it came from originally.
And I expanded it further because it.
Was so useful for my corporate clients, for my athletes, for our reset clients, for anyone we were working with.
Because it's so challenging to go towards the unknown when you don't know what that looks like and when the day to day urgent things that are coming at you are distracting you from where you want to go.
So I took a look at why.
This is so needed and that's why.
It kept coming up.
And it's because we get so distracted.
By what's urgent coming up into our.
Lives when these urgent demands are coming.
At us left and right, whether it's from our work or from our family.
Oftentimes we look and we look at this bigger picture and we may not.
Be serving what we really want for our life. I did an exercise recently with our resetters and what it was is looking.
At before we die, what do we want to say in looking back in our life? Our legacy was what do we want to say we accomplished in life when we look back at our life?
And then I asked the question to our resetters at the time, are you.
Doing the things day to day that are going to serve what you want to be able to look back on? And there's this pause. This is pause for all of us. This is pause for me.
When I do this in my life, I'm just like, whoa, am I actually.
Doing the things day to day that are going to serve what I want.
To say my life was made up of?
And oftentimes the answer is no. Oftentimes the things and the ways of being in our day to day are.
Not serving what we really want for our greatest life.
And so that's why this exercise, this concept became so powerful of our triple vision. The now goal, the next goal, and the end goal. So. So how do we use this? What's the benefit of it? It not only holds us in the now, but it also brings us into our future thinking which will serve where we want to go. Instead of drawing from our past thinking, which is often just based on everything that's already gone. It's not based on where we want to go typically. So how does this apply for sport or career?
I'll give you a couple of examples with the sport, with giving the example of the Sochi Gold with the women's national hockey team, that team was literally.
Looking at the now goal of who they needed to be, what needed to happen for the practice, for the now. When I was really learning about this concept, it was in the middle of.
Boot camp, the last boot camp, the.
Last hard Training camp before the team.
Was selected for the Olympics. And it's a month long camp and.
It was so bloody hard that people.
Had such a challenging time even getting through it.
So the now goal had to be very clear each day, because every day almost everyone wanted to quit because it was so hard and they knew so much more still needed to come. And that's why it was so compelling to be able to see the now goal but understand what the next goal was. They knew why they were going through what they were going through now because.
They wanted to make it through the qualifier. That was the next really important goal in order to qualify for the Olympics.
And then the question was, who did they need to be? How did they need to prepare for that next goal in order to make it to the Olympics in a way that would lead to a gold medal, not just make it to the Olympics in a way that, oh, we got there, but actually succeed in winning a gold medal. And that was the end goal. Now you can apply this exact same concept to relationships. If the now goal and the next goal and the end goal in a relationship look something like the now goal is to do an action or a.
Gesture that's loving towards someone else.
And the next goal is to have an exceptional marriage in while raising children or while working through growing a business. And that might be a five year goal with an end goal that's maybe 20 years down the road, that's still.
A loving, connected, incredible relationship and marriage.
That looks back on years of loving.
And just has this in love component that many, many, most marriages probably don't.
And if you look at that same kind of concept for self, what does it look like for self? This might be quite literally the now goal of how am I being today? To follow my schedule that also serves.
My best self care, my relaxation, my.
Nurturing while I'm following through on my.
Scheduled work and my scheduled family time.
For a next goal of being 55 years old and energetic and vibrant and moving well and living big adventures in life to an end goal of living to be over 100 years old and looking back on a life with massive satisfaction and dying fast with grace and dignity. If those are my end goals and next goals, what needs to happen now to facilitate that? What does it look like to make.
That actually come to fruition?
And that's why we look through this, because there's a bigger picture there now. Let's just say you have reached the next goal. This never stops. Because then there's a different end goal.
There'S a different middle goal and there's.
A different end goal, typically, because it's not about the goals. It's about everything that happens in between the goals. It's about everything that we live and how we're being in the now in order to keep looking towards our best future. It's not about reaching the goals and thinking we've made it. It's about the process along the way. Because that's the 80%, that's life. If 10% or 5% of our life is spent in the achieving of whatever it is we wanted to achieve, well, what about the rest of the 95% of life? So quite literally, the now is in the now goal and in between all of the other spaces of the direction that we're going with a constantly moving triple vision.
So that is what triple vision is.
It's a powerful, powerful way to take a look at life and take a look at what you want and be able to create future thinking from a space that stays present to how you're being every single day.
That serves where you want to go.
And serves where you want to go. That's your life. Not just career, not just family, not just self, but all of the things your whole life.
So that is triple vision in a nutshell. I hope this serves you powerfully.
I hope this allows you to look at things maybe with a little more grace and maybe with a little more enjoyment of every single moment in your life. Because that's what it is.
It's all the moments that are really your life.
It's not the big goals. The big goals just make the journey more fun along the way. Have a beautiful, beautiful day. Let this kick your week off powerfully and with intention, and have a wonderful week, everyone.
