Andrej Karpathy builds a multilayer perceptron that predicts the next character from context, replacing the bigram model's limitations. The MLP uses embedding tables and a hidden layer, trained with stochastic gradient descent on character data. The final model reaches a validation loss of 2.17 and generates name-like strings.
