Building Your Network Starts with Planting Seeds
20 Nov 2025 · 1 min
A Pelvibiz podcast episode (host Dr. Kelly Alhooie) explaining an analogy between growing plants and building a professional network and business. Kelly outlines four stages—planting seeds (initial contacts and content), nurturing (repeated touch points and relationship-building), harvesting (making offers/cashing in), and reaping benefits (sustained referrals and growth)—and gives practical examples for pelvic health PTs/OTs on how to engage community, clinicians, and online followers to grow a practice.

Welcome to Pelvibiz Podcast. I'm your host Kelly Alhui. I wanted to come on and talk to you guys about starting a business and how it is so kind of equivalent to growing your own food. I mean that is the analogy that I can bring you. So for those that are just starting out, okay, are you planting the seeds? What I mean by that is are you going out and talking to people? How many people a day are you actually talking to? This is huge. So if you're thinking about starting a business or you started a business and you're like, man, I just need more clients, you've got to plant more seeds. And what I mean by that is you've got to get out and talk to more people. The name of the game is people. And the more people that you can actually talk to and connect with. And what I mean by that is when I'm walking down the road, I'm wearing my orthopelvic shirt and I am saying hey to every single neighbor, I'm potentially talking to their dog. I am talking to all. Like we have stores around my house so I go to all the stores, my dog pulls me into all the stores and I know every single person that works there. I have a conversation with them every single day. And it's nothing like, you know, it's nothing like I'm doing any kind of sales. I'm just saying, hey, how's your mother in law, how's your daughter? How's this? And I'm just having a casual conversation and I'm mentioning nothing about my business. Now, of course, sometimes we get into it and they'll be like, hey, what do you do for work? And then I'll tell them. But I'm not sitting there trying to sell anyone on my work. I'm just sitting there trying to make a friend. And planting a seed. In a garden, you have to, like, make sure the soil is all good, right? And then you got to make sure it's the right time of season and year, and then you're going to plant the seed. Well, going out and talking to people is the equivalent to that. Planting the seed and just getting people in your community to get to know you. And online and how you do that online is you guys put out content, and you got to keep putting out content. Okay, so you are planting the seed when you're doing that. So once you plant the seed, then what happens? The seeds planted, then the seed starts to turn into whatever it may be being morphed into. Right? So it's starting to grow. Some kind of plant is starting to grow from that. So this is called the nurturing phase, where you have to nurture. You have to keep watering the plant to make sure that it keeps growing right. And in the business land, in the business world, the nurturing phase is when I just can't walk into a place and be like, hi, my name is Kelly, and this is what I do. And can you send me patience? No, that is the wrong thing to do. Instead, I have to go in there. I have to just make a connection that's number one with the person. Then I have to keep going back and having different touch points. So let's just say I'm trying to approach a doctor's office. Okay. As I go into the doctor's office, I first have to introduce myself of who I am. Okay, that's one touch point. That's the planting of the seed phase. The nurturing phase would mean that I repetitively go back to that doctor's office. I do not bring them any food, by the way. Do, please do not do that. And I just say, look, I can actually. We can actually cross collaborate, and I would love to put you on my referral list. How does that sound? And you can be my number one referral when someone is pregnant or when someone needs a pap smear, whatever it may be. Right? Let's cross collaborate. Let's do an IG live. I would go back in next week. Hey, you want to go back and do a IG live? I would go in the next week. Hey, guess what? I just created these flyers that actually help people poop better. So would you guys like this to hand out to your patients? How does that sound? Oh, okay. I go back in next week. Oh. I actually just created this tool that helps people be able to understand different birthing positions so that they're informed and more comfortable with the whole entire process. So you see how every single time there's a different touch point and I'm going back into the same office. I'm not just going there one time dropping off flyers and saying, bye, bye, they won't know me. I could plant a seed, but that thing isn't growing. The seed is not growing. So you have to keep watering the plant, you have to keep nurturing the plant for it to actually blossom into this amazing thing. I'll give you another example. I used to work with one of these surgeons, and he's an orthopedic surgeon, and he operated on hips. And I just was treating a lot of his hip patients and really having great outcomes with that. And because of that, for years and years, I was nurturing his patients. And that overall led to him just referring, even in my own practice, continuing to refer, because he knows the outcomes that we get, and they're really, really good when. Which then in return makes him look good. And so, because I've nurtured that relationship by having really good outcomes with these patients, and he's seen that, then that is what's helped, you know, my practice grow as well. So I'm very thankful for that, you know, so that's the nurturing phase. So then once the plant starts to grow, then what happens? We are ready to harvest it. We're ready to eat it. So whether or not you're growing mint in your backyard or whether or not you are growing the herbs in your kitchen that a lot of us have, harvesting means that now you are ready to eat the plant or whatever that you grew. Okay, so now if we're ready to eat it, this means that now this is my chance to actually, I call it kind of cashing in. Okay, so now is the phase where I can say, hey, well, let's just say I'm online. Hey, hey. If you would like to be able to stop your leakage, please give me a call at this number or put down your contact information and I will do a free consult call with you. I am cashing in or I ask a favor. Hey, guys. Anyone that's had services from me, can you please write me a review? I am asking them to do something for me. Now that's cashing in. I. I typically don't do that a lot because if you do that too much, you're taking too much away from people. And I believe that you should always be giving way more than you're actually taking, and that's what's actually going to serve you better. So when it comes to harvest, typically it's just like one to two times a year that things are ready to harvest. So when are you going to kind of cash in and what is going to be then that offers? Are you going to ask people for their contact information? Are you going to ask someone to do an initial evaluation with you? Like, what is it and what do you want them to do? My online people, are you trying to get them to buy a membership with you, or are you trying to sell a program to them? What do you want the people to do? So that's when you kind of cash in and you don't try to say, hey, just buy my program. When you talk about this, you talk about the actual outcome. So, so, for instance, if someone has leakage, I don't go up to them and say, hey, guess what? I have this program. Do you want to buy it? Instead I say, so we have this solution that we can actually give you in a digital form that will actually help you from Stop. Stop leaking. How does that sound? Is that something you're interested in? And I really dive into their goal and understand what their goal is to then be able to say, well, this is the stop leakage guide, or this is the control, your urine guide, whatever you want to call it. Okay, you want to call it typically the outcome, by the way. And then the fourth phase of this all is after you harvest everything, then you reap the benefit. Now you have multiple seeds growing, you've nurtured them many times. So you're watering them, you're. And again, you're. You're making many points of contact now. And now you maybe not have to do as much planting of the seeds because now you're a seasoned person and these plants are maturing and they know that each season they have to keep coming back. Well, we want them to keep coming back. They want to keep coming back and growing because you've actually have nurtured them so much that they're like, hey, I know this cycle, I'm going to do this over again. And then that's called. You reap the benefit of all those seeds that took you many either months, many years, many decades, whatever it may be that you have planted it all comes back to you. And the more that you actually give and the more seeds that you actually plant, the more that you're going to get in return. That's just how it works. So if you're just thinking, hey, I'll just plant a couple seeds here and there and you know, it just may not grow the way you want it to. But if you're someone that's thinking, you know what? I want exponential growth, I want to grow quickly, then you have to plant so many freaking seeds to be able to get people to come into your world. And like I said, by doing that, you've got to be talking pretty much from 6:00am in the morning when you wake up to 9:00 clock at night. So anyone you see in the grocery store, the streets, patients, and you know, anywhere, what else? I don't know, if you're walking around a mall, I don't know people go to the malls anymore. But wherever you're at, you've got to be communicating to people online. Online, you can easily talk to about 40 people a day in their DMs, for sure, if not their comments. So how are you talking to people and how are you planting those seeds? I think that's the most important. And then from there everything else grows. And if you're thinking, kelly, I don't have enough time, like, how do you have enough time to talk to all these people? I probably have like every single day, 60 conversations with people. It's a lot. That's all I do. I talk to people. A lot of people will like read and a lot of people will do other things or like consume the Internet and like do stuff online. But my jam is talking to people. And I really think overall it has paid off because A, I love to talk and B, I just like connecting with people because people will actually tell you what they want. And then that's how you know how to develop and harvest these products that you are trying to, you know, give to people because you've actually had so many conversations with them. So hopefully you guys have learned with the planting the seed analogy that it is a process. And it's not just, okay, I'll just go drop off my flyer, say one thing, and bye bye. It really is a connection. It has to be a meaningful connection. It has to be nurtured. And it takes time to develop these relationships. And some relationships grow really quickly and some don't grow at all. And once you figure out which ones grow quick, nurture those more which ones that aren't growing that quick, then maybe that just isn't your jam, and you just let those go. So let those flowers kind of die off and focus on kind of the patch that's actually growing. So hopefully that helps, guys. If you guys are, like, stuck on, man, I don't know, you know, what to do with my time. You know, I don't know how to get more patience. All of that comes down to plant more seeds. How can you get your time back by planting more seeds and by getting more patience. You got to plant more seeds. That's what it comes down to. So hopefully this helps, guys. Bye.
