Chutes and Ladders For Business Owners
20 Nov 2025 · 7 min
A short motivational podcast episode by Dr. Kelly Alhooie (Pelvi Biz) using the board game Chutes and Ladders as an extended analogy for entrepreneurship. Targeted to pelvic health PTs and OTs, the episode encourages listeners to define a clear finish line, treat setbacks (the “chutes”) as opportunities to pivot quickly, and take deliberate actions (e.g., changing marketing strategy) to accelerate out of setbacks. The host cites her own experience launching Pelvi Biz, growing from a solo practice to a multi-person team and ultimately producing a sold-out event as an example.

Welcome to Pelli Biz Podcast. I'm your host, Dr. Kelly Alhuey. Today I'm going to talk about how business is like Chutes and ladder, the old school boards game. Yes, I said it shoots and ladder. If you guys remember that, you may be too young, I don't know, but this is business. So no one remembers that game. It's a board game and basically you would like roll a dice, you would move your little thing on the board and you may get dropped down on a chute and you would go basically down, kind of like this slide all the way down to the bottom. And then you'd have to work your way slowly but surely back up to where you could potentially win the game. Now, what's the game? What's the end goal? That's a question you got to ask yourself. What is the end goal? What's your goal? What's your goal in business? What do you want to do? What's your goal in life? Where do you want to be? So I was at a Mastermind event this weekend and this really came up and I thought it was so fascinating because people, some people, they were on a path that never went down the chute. Some people were on a path that went down many shoots and some people hit a chute and rebounded like a freaking rubber band and got launched to the finish line. So, you know, where are you at in your business? And if something, you know, comes up and like happens or some traumatic event happens called life, because it does, it happens to everyone, what are you going to do when it comes to the chutes and Ladders game. So what I mean by that is, if you roll the dice and you get knocked down in the chute, are you going to slowly climb your way out of that chute or are you going to figure out a way that you can just be launched like a water balloon and just launch up that chute and continue on the path? For me, I know if I go down a shoot, I am going to pause for that day. I'm going to have my moment and I'm going to think about what can I do differently. I think this is very important. Instead of sitting at the bottom of the chute going, poor me, I feel so sorry for me. I can't do anything. I suck. And like having all this negative talk. Stop with the negative talk. Say, okay, this sucks. I'm at the bottom of this chute now. What's the fastest way that I can get out of here? That's what you should be asking yourself. And when you ask yourself that question, a lot of times the answer is, what can I do differently that I haven't done already? So I'm going to give you a great example of this. When I launched Pelvibiz, okay, no one bought, not one single person. Pelviz was. It's new. No one had a clue. No one saw the vision that I saw. Okay? And that's okay. I don't expect anyone to see that. And so I was basically down in a chute and I didn't know if I was coming back. But what I did was say, what can I do differently that I haven't been doing? I wasn't talking to anyone online because online talking is not my jam. I love in person events, right? But to have an in person event, you got to do lots of online talking. So what I realized was, all right, Kelly, you got to start talking to people online. So that's what I started to do is say, who can I help and how can I help them? So once I started doing that and I switched up what I was doing, that led me to the bottom of the chute, I did the complete opposite. I got launched out of that shoot very quickly and the momentum started to build and my path became clearer and clearer and I just got launched to the finish line of having pelvis event, a sold out pelvis biz event, and that was my overall finish line. That means I won the game of Chutes and Ladders when I had a sold out pelvis biz event. And a lot of people don't talk about going down the chute. But I can talk about it. I don't have a problem talking about it because I actually think every single person should fall down on that chute. Because it's the only thing that's truly actually going to give you clarity on where you need to go and actually launch you. If I didn't fall down that chute and Pelvibiz was just, you know, continuing on and slowly but surely it was building, it may have not been a sold out event, truly it may have not. But because I felt really hard down that shoot, I actually then had to pick myself up, come up with a different strategy and launch myself like a freaking rocket to the finish line so that we could have the best event to help support pelvic health business owners and progress their businesses. Because I know there's such a need. Because I came from that world of, you know, where I was poor, sick, tired, all the things, working for someone else. And, and I know that every single one of you, if you want it for yourself, you can live whatever life you want. But you got to really want it. That's it. And you got to know your finish line. Like, what is the end game for you. And it could change every single year. It literally can change. And you become a different version and have a different finish line. You can have a different version of Chutes and Ladders, that's okay. But just know, in business, people talk about ways, but in this reference, I want to talk about how you're going down these holes and then rebounding up out of them. And that is very, very classic business. If you're not doing that, you probably don't have a business. And I think so often not. People think of going down the chute as a bad thing, just like they look at failure as a bad thing. Because going down the chute, you know, is very parallel to failure. But I truly, truly, truly believe that going down that chute is the only way that you can actually win the game. It's the only way. If you did not hit that chute, you're not going to win. And especially if you can launch yourself out of that chute. Now, if you're just trying to crawl out of that chute and you get knocked down again and you try to crawl a little bit and then get knocked down again, you may be staying in that chute for a very long time and that may not get you to where you want to be and you may not win the game that way. So your job is to figure out, how do I get out of here the fastest. And what can I do differently? You know, And I do think this is a great analogy for business or Chutes and Ladders, and that you gotta figure out a way, whatever it takes.
To get you there.
And your why for your finish line has to be so big. So my why in general for Pelvi Biz was because I was the person that had so much pain that I dealt with for years and years and years before, you know, launching a business of working four jobs, of just hustling just to pay off my student loan debt and just to live. And these days, none of you guys have to go through that. If, you know, if you choose that, if you want to keep working for someone else, like, that's cool, but just know you're going to have to really hustle. You have to really get after it. And I'm not saying the first year in business is like, you know, a cakewalk, and you're going to go along the chutes and ladders path just fine. And I'm not saying that, but what I'm saying is along that path, you're going to find your way. At some point, no matter how many times you go down the freaking chute, you can always get back up and look at the chute as a positive rather than a negative. Because so often than not, when someone goes down the chute, they just want to stay there. And the people that are winning in business are the people that can get out of that hole or get out of that chute the fastest. So if you can figure out a way to do that, you win the game. So I'm going to leave you with this. What's your end game? How do you win the game? How do you win the game of Chutes and ladder? What's your big why? That's going to help keep you in the game. And when you get knocked down in that chute, how are you going to rebound the fastest to be able to launch yourself to the finish line?
