This is a podcast episode (hosted by Dr. Kelly Alhooie) about cultivating communities to grow healthcare businesses, especially in pelvic health. Kelly recounts her path founding Ortho Pelvic Physical Therapy and Pelvibiz, explains nine concrete principles for community building (identify passion, find your tribe, cross-promotion, clear messaging, help others win, connect in person, wear your brand, join local groups), and offers tactical examples for clinics (gym partnerships, walking clubs, parent groups). The episode closes with a call-to-action to book a call and subscribe.
Welcome to Pelby biz podcast. I'm Dr. Kelly Alhui. I have grown and established brick and mortar practice in Northern Virginia called Ortho Pelvic Physical Therapy and also founded Pelvibiz, which is an online business consulting company that helps healthcare providers make more money and be healthy while doing it, especially in the pelvic health realm. And let's get into today's episode.
Today I'm going to talk about how to cultivate a community. Community building is the number one thing that has built both my companies. And I can say it's super, super important. Most people don't know that they need a community, but when you're able to actually build a community that effectively talks to one another and is able to collaborate and connect, it's the best thing that you could ever build. So I'm going to teach you today how to build your community. So here we go, let's get into it. So, number one, you have to think about what you are passionate about. So for me, very passionate about pelvic health. Fifteen years ago, no one even knew about pelvic health and I was very passionate about it and people thought I was crazy. And I think I was passionate about it. Not that I had my own issues or anything like that, because it was the missing link that I saw between orthopedic and I was also a fitness and Pilates instructor and yoga instructor and no one was connecting the dots there. And my women that I was rehabbing with Pilates, they had leakage and no one was talking about it. And I wanted to be the one to solve that for them because they were all complaining about it, but no one was coming up with answers. So I saw that there was a gap. And then ever since that day, I was very passionate about it and I wanted to connect with people that were just as passionate about it. So that's number one. You have to ask yourself, what are you truly passionate about? Screw the money. Like, what can you talk about constantly that is not going to get boring to you? For me, it was pelvic health. Then it was also helping women in business, because my own journey in business. And so that is what's why I started the second company, Pelvibiz. But I really was first passionate about pelvic health. And then after working with so many women with their leakage issues, I also then saw that I was even instructing my patients on how to feel empowered about themselves and be able to go out on their own and like do whatever they wanted. And I wanted to be the one to empower them. And that's how Pelleviz came about is through my own personal struggles of just getting what I wanted out of life. And I felt like I was taught a lie and realizing that there's a completely other different pathway that most of us women didn't even know about because they haven't taught us. And that's where my passion came from. So before even pelvic biz, I was coaching many patients on my table how to start and grow businesses. And then I said, why don't I do this for the pelvic health world because no one's doing it. And then that's how pelvis came about. So what can you talk about forever? And now for me, I'm really passionate about business. I'm really passionate about uplifting women and growing their businesses. And it's not just the business aspect, it's the transformation that comes from growing the business. You know, yes, I'm passionate about the business part, but like really what I'm passionate about is the confidence that these women get and the life transformations that they get when they follow their passion that maybe they didn't even know was a thing. And I just give them the roadmap to it and they put in the work and the outcomes that they get are insane. And it completely changes their life and trajectory of their life and even their kids lives. So it's just pretty cool. So that's number one, ask yourself, what are you passionate about? Number two, who else is passionate about that? That's what you gotta ask yourself. So is there other pelvic health therapists that you can collaborate with? Is there other doulas, midwives, massage therapists? Is there other what else? Doctors that are really passionate about what we're talking about. So who else is passionate? So basically, who else is in your tribe? That's what you got to find. Who's your tribe? Number three, who has a similar audience that you can cross promote with? So for example, if I'm in, let's just go to the pelvic health plan for a pelvis who has the audience of pelvic health PTs and OTs. Other pelvic health PTs and OTs, because other pelvic health, PTs and OTs, they all follow each other. So if I was trying to cross collaborate and build a community, then I need to go and start asking other pelvic health PTs and OTs to go on their podcast, be on their social media, collaborate on event together, all that kind of Stuff, right? Conversely, for my brick and mortar practice, if I'm trying to get involved with an audience that and build a community that's similar to mine, I would ask a massage therapist that does pregnancy massage to collaborate with and maybe do like a post. I would ask a chiropractor next door to be like, hey, can we, if you guys see a patient then we'll give them a free session or something like that so we can cross collaborate. So who has a similar audience? That is the patients that you like to see and who and how can you collaborate with them? Number four, know the more clear er, the more clearer you are, the more you will attract the right person. So the more clear you are with your messaging, the more clear you're going to attract the person that you actually want to hang out with. Okay? So for me, for Pelviz, I want to attract people that are go getters, that don't question it, that just start acting and doing the thing, that want to make a lot of money, that want to grow their business, that want a complete life transformation, that want to become a completely better person or a better version of themselves, okay. That want to change their kids life. I want someone that's passionate. That's what I'm looking for, is for someone that's just like, yes, I'm just gonna try. I'm gonna try. I'm trying to try and not give up. That's someone that I want to attract in my world. I like also people that like to go to events and stuff like that and have fun. Like those are the people I want to attract in my world for orthopelvic, for people like that. I want to attract people that have leakage pain with intercourse, tailbone pain, pregnancy, postpartum. Those are the people that I want to track and I want them to be active people that have mobility issues, that have issues lifting weights, that want to go PR and run marathons, that want to lift the heaviest weight possible. Those are the people that I want to work with because those are the people that I believe that I could really help because I have a lot of experience in that realm of activity because of my past histories of Pilates, yoga, all that kind of stuff, CrossFit. So I'm a very, you know, active, functional movement kind of therapist. So. And I'm, trust me, I can do all the manual stuff too. But you know, I really like to look at function. The more the years that have gone by, I just realized basically a lot of issues come about because of movement patterns that's why people have pain. If we just correct the movement patterns, I don't care if I gave them 20,000 exercises that they're not going to do. If I can just correct the movement pattern that they're actually causing that problem, then I'm going to get really good results. So you have to be very clear on the people that you are trying to attract. And that goes to the marketing message. So if I'm out in my community, I'm trying to collaborate with my community. I need to make sure before I just go out there and start talking to everyone that, hey, this is who we really help so that people understand, hey, this is your go to person. You guys need to go see Kelly because she can really help you with your movement at burn boot camp. Okay? So I think that's really important to make sure marketing message is 100% nailed down. Number six, you want other people to win and help them and you want them to, you want to help them win in return. You will actually grow when you help other people win. And just because you help other people win doesn't mean that they're going to love you. By the way, I've helped many people win, especially in the pelvic health realm. And it just like, thanks, bye. And so that's okay. Like that's okay. That's on them. You have to let them go, right? So you just want to keep helping people win because you know how you've impacted and changed these people's lives and you know when they're ready to fly, they just fly. And that's cool. Same thing in clinic. You help people win by getting them to their goal. And when you've gotten to them the goal, you let them fly and you let them go to that trampoline park and let them go jump on the trampoline and see what happens, right? And then hopefully they finish out their whole plan of care and they don't have leakage. So that's the best part. And it's just cool to build people up and let them fly to see like, hey, what can they do? So that's always really cool to be able to really help other people win and know that you are a part of it. Whether or not you get credit for it or not. It is really important to. It brings joy when you see other people succeed and keep moving when you know that there was some part of it that you helped them out with. So that's pretty cool. Number seven, you. You can't be afraid to connect and talk with people. No Offense against the younger people. But sometimes the younger people. I know it's a little harder to connect in person. You guys want to do it all on social media, that's fine. You can do that. But you also want to be able to be able to connect in person. Like, even as simple as when you're walking your neighborhood saying hello to someone, that's super, super important. If you can do that, kudos to you, because many people these days are not doing that. So if you're able to be like, hey, Sally, so good to see you, and you're wearing, like, your shirt around. I wear my orthopelvic shirt everywhere I go, so. So it gives me something to talk about. If someone is like, hey, is that your company? Or, hey, what's orthopelvic? Oh, okay, let me tell you. Or, oh, you have this. Oh, my God. See this company right here? That's actually my company. Come see me. So it gives you a point of reference and also something that you can connect with the community about. When you're just able to walk up to people and talk to them and have a conversation. I'll walk into department stores or stores around my house, and I'll just carry on a conversation with all the people that work at the desk. And we all know each other because I'm like, hey, this person is going to come in and see you because of this. And it's just really cool. You cultivate the community because you're able to connect and talk to people. And that's, again, going back to a connector. I like connecting people to one another that I feel like would be beneficial to each other. And when they can do that and collaborate, then magic happens because they get to connect and share both of their expertise to whatever audience are trying to do. Number eight, like I just said, I wear my logo everywhere I freaking go. I want to be the walking billboard. I want to create and cultivate, maybe curiosity. I want to cultivate, like I said, the community aspect of it. So I think that's important. And number nine, I said, get involved in a local gym, like a Burn Boot Camp. So many moms are there and they create this community not only because they have daycare, but all the moms show up and they're like, hey, you made it today. Like, good job. You're giving high fives in class, right? Burn Boot Camp does an amazing job of cultivating a community. They have a Facebook group. They do certain things and have certain speakers in those Facebook groups. They have different activities besides just Burn Boot Camp that moms can connect with. They all go to each other's birthday parties, so and just having their kids there as well, they're going to connect and be like, hey, John pooped today. Did your child poop today?
Okay, great.
And that's the community that they're building to get members. They're not going there to work out. I mean they are, but really they're going there to connect with like minded individuals that have the same problems. Their kids are all, you know, younger and they want someone to be able to converse about the problems that they're having with the kids and sympathize while also feeling better about themselves. That's what burn Boot camp does very well and not only takes care of the mom, but also takes care of the child and allows both needs to be met. So if you can get involved with a local club, a church group, maybe a pickleball, maybe you play pickleball and you're like, hey, let me get on a pickleball league. Those people are you're going to be able to connect with because they all have the like minded mentality and you're going to be able to start to cultivate this community that serves you because it's everything you would want. Does that make sense? And selfishly, you're building the community because it's kind of what you needed, right? When I started Pelviz, besides helping uplifting women, my main thing was I just wanted girlfriends in business. That's really what it was because I started to feel like, hey, entrepreneurship can be lonely, especially when you're on top and no one really gets it unless you're actually going through it. Even my husband doesn't get it. So it was just the women that I realized that were in entrepreneurship, they're the ones that get it the most because they have to fight the day to day the struggle of how do I balance kids, how do I not balance, maybe don't have kids, how do I balance work, how do I balance my own life, how to balance my health, how do I financially get ahead, all that kind of stuff. And I realized they were the only people that truly got it. So when you're cultivating a community, I think what, one through nine bullet points, I think this is a really good start. And if you can do it correctly, if you can cultivate the community correctly, you will be the biggest winner because people will remember you because it's a community and you're not just over there as another brick and mortar practice saying, hey, come and see me there's something else that makes your clinic different when you're able to involve the community. Like a walking club in your community or a coffee in baby date night. Or maybe you do an online mommy talk at 8 o' clock at night when the kids are in bed and then the moms can talk about, hey, did your child do this milestone today? Well, mine did. Or hey, they had this rash on their face. Does anyone know who this, what this is? And then they feel that they are supported and have support besides just physical or occupational therapy. And we can really, truly impact people's lives beyond the musculoskeletal and nerve system. So I think that's super important and hopefully every single person that's listening to this is going out and building a community if you don't have one already and truly impacting everyone around you. So bye guys.
