I Tried This For 30 Days And WOW!

Kelly Alhooie (host) explains that company culture must be lived daily, not just written as rules. Drawing on a past brick-and-mortar experience and the practices at her company Pelvibiz, she describes a culture centered on leading by example, universal leadership expectations for all hires, daily self-care and discipline (including workouts), unlimited time off with accountability, high energy, frequent learning/events, fun/retreats, and close attention to employees' families. She frames culture as the primary determinant of whether a company succeeds and offers a contact number for listeners who need help.

Culture, it isn't about what you put on a piece of paper and just read out to your employees. It's about actually what you truly live and what you truly want. And you have to wake up every single day and lead by example. If you want culture, you can't just put it out on a piece of paper. Here is what I didn't know, by the way. Welcome to Poly Biz Podcast. I'm your host, Kelly Alhueey, and today I'm going to talk really about culture. And this is what I didn't know. When I had my brick and mortar. I wrote out 10 Fundamentals and it was like basically like, ask for help, don't complain, work your hardest, Take care of yourself. Don't hide mistakes. Like, those are the things that I had as the 10 fundamentals. And I really just put this on the 10 that my sheet because one of my mentors was like, just make sure you have 10 fundamentals so that, like, your company has a culture. And I'm like, cool, got it. Check the box. I'll put it in my handbook and post it somewhere and then I'll read it for new people that come on and that's what I'll do. The reality is it didn't work. And I even have an interesting story where I was gone for a couple weeks. I came back to the clinic and the 10 fundamentals were taken down off the cabinet that they were on. And I was like, who took this down? Like, how disrespectful is that? And basically my staff was indirectly telling me this is basically. And I'm like, yeah, it pretty much is. And I was so pissed off that that thing got taken down. But now looking back, of course it got taken down because I just put it on a piece of paper and it was basically just should have said at the top rules to follow. Like, that's really what it was. It wasn't culture, it was rules to follow. And so, you know, you really have to think about this when you were trying to build a culture. Okay? Every single thing. I'm going to dive deep into this because I don't think people truly. I really, truly don't believe people understand what true culture is. Everyone says they have a culture, but I haven't seen any company except for one live by culture. I have not. And this whole thing that I saw completely changed my mindset around culture. And, and it was so eye opening to me when I went to this event and I experienced this culture that I couldn't stop talking about it. I really. And I still can't, to this day stop talking about it because I have never felt it. I've never experienced it. I didn't know. No one ever showed me what culture was. They just told me what to do. I wrote it down on a piece of paper and then tried to live by it. But here's what I realized, and this is why I believe Pelvi Biz is honestly different. The culture and the standard that we set at Pelvibiz is unprecedented. I'm telling you, the culture that Julia and I have set up is no one is better than anyone. Yes, I'm the CEO. Yes, Julia is the coo. However, our titles never come out. And frankly, if when we're growing the business, I actually don't want to have anyone else have titles because everyone is on the same playing field. What I realized is I had to hire managers and a brick and mortar, because they were managers, just mean babysitters. That's really what they were. And I don't want a culture where I have to babysit people. I don't want to actually put money towards glorified babysitters. That's not what I stand for. I stand for anyone that comes in the company. I want them to be massive, massive leaders. And every single person, whether or not you're hired for marketing, or whether or not you're hired for sales, or whether or not you're hired for, you know, organic social media, every single person that steps into Pelvibiz has to be a leader. Every single person that steps in has to teach us something, something every single day. They have to be investing in themselves every single day. So when my team comes in, we don't just show up and say, hey, we're here at a meeting. What my team does is we invest every single day and night into learning. We become the best students you've ever seen. Most people are not doing that. People just want to come in, check into a job, and be peace out. Thanks for the paycheck. Bye bye, Pelvibiz. We don't roll that way. That is not how we do it. Anyone that works for Pelvis can have unlimited time off. They can. They can have whatever time off they want. Okay? They don't have to ask. They could take whatever time off. They don't have to get approval. They can do. They can just do whatever, okay? However, there are standards. There's stuff that has to get done. There's learning that has to be had. So they just say, hey, I'll be at the gym. Great. I'm gonna go to, you know, I don't know. I'm gonna go to Georgia this weekend, and I'll be off. Okay, great. And they just put it on the calendar, and then they go. And we have this culture because we know behind the scenes, we are all working our tails off to become the best, to lead from the front, to be the person that we know we're meant to be. No one is slacking. So I don't have to have a babysitter. I. I don't have to say, oh, I hope this person's doing that. I have no doubt my team is working their tail off. I have no doubt. Because we all have one mission, which is to elevate every single person in healthcare to live a life that they truly say that they want to live, whether or not that's time with their kids or whether or not that's money. So the culture at Pelvi Biz is literally take off when you want. Take care of yourself. And by the way, you. You also have to work out every single day. That is the culture you have to work out. And that starts with me. If I don't show up and I don't work out every single day, how can I expect my team to. How? I'm a hypocrite and a liar if I don't work out every single day. So, yes, there's times in the morning where I'm like, ugh. I mean, just this past week, I was like, oh, I don't want to be here. And I was like, nope, Julia's working on the east coast, and I got to get my butt out of this bed. I got to get my workout in. So I got energy to bring up the whole team today. Let's go. So at five o', clock, I get my butt up, and I went to the gym, and 15 minutes in, I'm like, I'm sprinting on that treadmill. Because my energy came back, and I just showed up for myself because I knew I had to show up for. I had to show up for myself. And how to show up for my freaking team. That's very important. And so if you guys are not taking your care of yourself every single day, you cannot show up for your team. I've been there. And it led to complete burnout. And it cost me millions and millions of dollars, and that is not a lie. Cost me millions of dollars. So I'm never, ever going to let myself get to that place again. And I don't want you guys either to get there because it will cost you maybe multi six figures, maybe even millions of dollars as well. So you can't get to that point. So step one is creating a culture is you have to lead massively in all different ways. The next thing is you got to take care of their families. You got to take care of their families like no one's business. If they have a spouse, you got to bring them into the company. Meaning, hey, tell me about your spouse, tell me about your weekend. What's going on? What does that look like? Like I have to know every single thing about their spouse because their spouse and them are going to be a big part of, of the world that we live in and work together in. And if that doesn't jive or there is a disconnect, then the culture of Pelvibiz will go down. And that's just not what we're doing. It's not it. Another standard of Pelvibiz is we have to have high energy at all times. Like we don't get tired. You have to have high energy and you've got to be able to maintain a level of I'm going to keep going and you have to work hard. I think that's another thing. You have to work hard. You have to have. I'm not saying you're going to work till 10 o' clock at night. That's not it. Okay? I'm not killing, we're not killing everyone over here. But I'm telling you, when you're working, you're going to be present and we're going to, we're going to move the needle. We're going to do hard stuff. We're going to do stuff that you don't want to do. Okay? We're going to make you grow. I'm going to hold you to the freaking fire and I am going to push you and make you grow. I'm going to make you so uncomfortable. But you're going to be so proud of yourself. You're going to be so proud of yourself. By the time you know that whatever project we get done, like, you're going to be like, oh my freaking God, I got through that. Like, look at me now. Which is only going to build your self confidence. It's only going to make you more dangerous. It's only going to make you more on fire because you're going to be like, oh my God, I just went through this. I can freaking climb the mountain now. Who doesn't want that? People want to be led. They want to Be led. They don't want to be with some loser that's like, hey, let's just check into work today at 9 o' clock, and then let's check out at 5 o' clock and then hopefully all is well. That's called a job. That's boring as hell and that's annoying. And you only get like two weeks off and you got to beg and ask them for that. No one wants that. No one wants to be led by that. Okay? So. So don't be that leader. Don't be that leader. Don't have that culture. Do not have that culture. Okay? The other way we like to lead is making sure that we have fun. We make business fun. I love doing fun things. Like, soon we're all going to Running Man. If you guys don't know it's put on by Jesse Itzler. It's like a. It's like Coachella, but you don't have alcohol and it's like a fitness event and you're supposed to, like, run a marathon. Well, I've never run a marathon. I did run a half marathon and literally puked at the end and almost died. But, um, we're doing that. And so we have a goal, not only in business together, but we have a goal and a mission to be able to just like, maybe do a half marathon at Running Man. Like, that would be a huge achievement if we were able to do that. And so we both got to get in shape to be able to do that. And that requires discipline. That. That's literally it. Discipline. And every single day, people that are on my team, you, you have to be massively disciplined because you're going to have to do things you don't want to do. I just told Julia the other day. I was like, julia, remember when I brought you on and you said, I hate doing the same thing over and over again? I said, well, guess what? We're in that phase. We're going to do the same stuff over and over again. It's going to be real boring for you, I think. But every single day we're still leveling up. And sometimes that's true, guys. You're going to do the same thing sometimes over and over because you have to get the reps in. But. But that doesn't mean you stop learning and growing. That's the difference between a job and someone that actually has a massive mission to move you. Yeah, you can do the same thing over and over again in a normal job. And you're not learning. That's called a job. This is where you're still going to continue to learn and still level up every single day. We are doing something different every single day. Every single day. I'm investing in something else. I invest, invest, invest, because I know investments get me speed and get me to where I want a lot quicker without all the freaking pain. And so I highly recommend you investing. I think that's huge that you have to invest in yourself to be able to get where you want to go the quickest with the least amount of mistakes. And that's also part of our culture. So we go to events. I don't know if you guys seen, but we go to events. Literally we have at least two to three events a month that we go to attend. That's almost every weekend. I mean it's, it's a lot. But we do that because we want to be surrounded by people that also want to level up. I don't want to have anyone. That's another kind of fundamental we live by is we don't like to have anyone around us that are Debbie Downers or that want to complain or that don't want to take things to the next level or that don't want to grow. If you don't want to grow, then this is not the company for you. It's not it. And I used to say that at my brick and mortar practice, but I didn't truly understand and believe it. I was just like, yeah, like, that's okay if you don't study at night. If I had to go back, I'd be like, no, every single one of my clinicians, you should be studying at night. I'm like, whatever. You had a patient of that day, like, I want you studying because that tells me that you are ready to take it to the next level. And doing their own research rather than them coming in asking me like, you know, and that was fine. They all asked me, it's fine. But like, self development is huge. Self starter, self motivator, taking control of whatever they need to take control. These are things that I need most of you guys to look out for in your companies. Because I can tell you, probably a lot of you guys are just hiring people because they breathe. I did. I did. And you can't do that anymore. You can't hire people just to breathe because if you do, they will take down your entire company. They really will. And I learned that lesson too. So you gotta set the standard. And it's not also too by what you say. It's not me. Just like, let me make A podcast on this or write it out on a piece of paper and post it everywhere. No, it's. Let me not tell you. Let me show you. In every single day, you have to show up with the energy. You got to show up with the fire. You got to show up that you took care of yourself. You got to show up that you actually care about people. You got to show up that you treat people the way you want to be treated, like a freaking family. You got to show up to get people their freaking goals. Not your goals, their goals. And when you're a true leader, it's not about you anymore. It's about the impact that you could have on every single person around you. That's it. That's truly the stage that I'm at right now. It's not about me anymore. I got my dream. I'm here, okay? It's about the people that I want to take to the next level and who wants to do this thing with me and who wants to make it fun with me, and. And if that's you, then, like, please come on my team any day. Those are the people I'm looking for. That is culture also, how you dress and look. You know, Pelby biz is evolving to the brand that I, you know, really knew it should be. Right now I'm sitting here cause I just got my face burned off. But technically, for these podcasts, typically I dress up. I have my makeup on, I have a cute little outfit on. That's the culture at Pelvibiz that we like to have parties and dress up and like, look cute and feel cute and feel confident about ourselves. When I started Pelvibiz, I was the first one ever in healthcare that I know of that literally did business retreats. And I wasn't like a conference because I hated that. I literally rented out Airbnbs and put everyone in Airbnb. I paid for them to stay there and all the things. Because I wanted it to be so different. I wanted to be fun and not boring. That's the way I like to do business. That's Pelvibiz. That's the brand that we like to stand on. We're not basic boring bitches. We're not. We're freaking elevators and leaders and we do things so differently. And then everyone else copies and that's fine. Everyone else just says, okay, well, well, this is what she's doing. Okay, I'll kind of copy that. Or these are the podcast she's doing. So I'm going to copy this too. Welcome to being a leader. I expect it. I expect it that you know when I release stuff that people are going to try to duplicate it. That's okay. That's part of a leadership. You have to be okay with that, by the way. You have to be okay. At Orthopelvic seven people started companies that were in like a 2 to 3 mile radius of Orthopelic. I can create all my competitors. I created all my competitors. Was I okay with it? 100%. 100%. Why would I not want them to elevate? Did it take Orthopublic out? Nope, we're still leading. Okay. Because I had to keep staying on top. And that's the thing as a leader. You're not bothered by your competitors because you know, you truly know you will outperform because you're constantly learning they're not. And that's okay. That's okay. Not everyone's meant to be a leader. Let me just say that. And so culture, it's the most underrated besides a woman's intuition in business that I can tell you. Culture is what is going to either make your company or break your company. Let me say one more thing too. You don't have a company unless you have people and a team. You don't. If you just have just you working at your business, that just means you have another job because you're in it 247 and you can't pull yourself out. When you have people in a team that you know you're supporting or that you're surrounded by, that's, that's a company. Now if you want to create a culture and actually take the things to the next level, it's not about you taking it to the next level. You have to lead the team. But it's about every single person on the team has to elevate to take everything to next next level so that everyone gets what they want, not just you get what you want. And so when everyone is unstoppable on your team and is willing to freaking dominate and I would say it's like the freaking underdog or the freaking like person that's like just that is so doubted. Like this was me, I was so doubted. I couldn't, you know, they said oh yeah, she can't reach and have, you know, more than a fifth grade reading level. Which is probably still true. Okay. I don't know how I went got through med school, but I did, you know, and really I just didn't want to read stuff. I didn't want to read. I still have never read a book, but that's okay. That's beside the point anyways. Like if, if you're the freaking underdog and you just have freaking grit and you're like, I will do anything and keep learning and keep progressing and want to be like the most amazing person and keep. Now I'm not saying I'm perfect, but I'm just saying, like, you just have to want it and you have to be like, we can all do this and the whole team has to want it. And when that happens, you that your team can out beat anyone. You can outperform anyone when your team's like that. But if there's someone that's like, I just showed up today and I'm here, I mean, that's just not someone you want on your team. Like if you're walking in two minutes before a patient arrives, I that to me is already telling me you're not in it. I need you to be ready to go at least five minutes before a patient and you have your energy up and ready. If you don't, you're out. That's culture and you got. And you can't walk in there either like that. You can't walk in a minute before a patient and you got to walk in like 10 minutes before. Get prepared. You better have your hair looking all nice. You can't walk in there like a hot mess because they're going to show up like a hot mess. So these are just lessons that I've learned about culture and it's probably the most underrated thing to help really excel and build a company so that everyone gets what they want. And that's key. So, guys, if you have any questions or need help with this, I'd be happy to, you know, jump on the phone with you. Text me, please just text me. Shoot me a text.
