Timing Your Business Launch

A short podcast episode by Dr. Kelly Alhooie advising healthcare providers (especially pelvic health clinicians) on the importance of timing when leaving a stable job to start a business. She argues there is no perfect time, urges decisive action (start now, get clients quickly, or find mentorship), shares personal burnout-driven reasons for leaving clinical work, and closes with an offer to book coaching.
Welcome to Pelby biz podcast. I'm Dr. Kelly Alhui. I have grown and established brick and mortar practice in Northern Virginia called Ortho Pelvic Physical Therapy and also founded Pelvibiz, which is an online business consulting company that helps healthcare providers make more money and be healthy while doing it, especially in the pelvic health realm. Let's get into today's episode.
Today I'm going to talk about timing. Like, just timing. I've been getting on a lot of coaching calls lately and the biggest thing I'm hearing is most people are trying to decide between leaving their job and starting their own business. And it really comes down to timing. What I realize is they all come into the call expecting me to tell them this very long, drawn out plan of how they're going to get their business started. The reality is it honestly takes me five minutes for me to tell them immediate action steps that they need to do to start their business. And then they're shocked because they're like, wait, what? That's it? I thought I needed attorneys. I thought I needed this software. I thought I needed this. A business bank account. I thought I needed an llc. You don't need any of that. You don't need any of it. The biggest thing is, the biggest excuse that I tend to hear is all about timing. And I'm realizing that it's all about are they actually truly ready? Because most of us say to ourselves, yeah, I want to leave, I want to do the thing I know this is right for me to do. But then, but then you give the another excuse of I like the people I work with. I really don't want to do bad to my boss. I feel bad for leaving my patients when they have no one else to go. See, these are all legitimate reasons, by the way. Okay, they're not. I felt this way too. But the reality is those patients that you are working tirelessly. I was in the same boat. I spent three hours at night doing notes and then I would go back and treat the patients for another eight hours. Those patients weren't at my house when it took me an hour to get out of my bed every single morning just to actually go and treat them because I was so exhausted going through perimenopause and no one picked up on it. And I was just burning myself out, just trying to make this mold that they were basically created and I was trying to fit myself in it and it wasn't working for me or my body. And that was my deeper why of why I Decided to make the jump and why I was forced to. I didn't have this whole timing dilemma of, well, should I do it now, should I not? It was like, it was a necessity. And I truly believe that that's what made me successful very quickly. Because it was a must. I had no other option. There was no, well, maybe I'll kind of dive into this a little bit. Maybe I'll do my side hustle. I had one option. You either get out now or you're not going to live. Like, that was literally it. And I. And that's when I left. So when I'm on these calls with some of you guys and you're saying, here's some stuff that I hear, Kelly, I'm having a baby in four months and I really just want to stay because I have a six week maternity leave. Okay, Ask yourself this question. If that's you listening to this, ask yourself, in four months, can I see six clients? Can I get six clients in four months? Do you guys believe you can get six clients? Most of you that are listening to this now, I 100% believe you can do that. I do. You get six clients, you'll be six, eight clients. Depending on how much you charge. You'll be at basically a full time PT salary or OT salary on maternity leave. Because then what we'll do is we'll have someone come in and take over and, or refer them to someone else and you'll get a cut of it. Okay, that's one way. So why not start now? That's what I need you guys to really dive into. What it, what's holding you back? Because you want the safe six week maternity leave that may or may not even pay you. Why wait when you can have actually a better life within four months? I get it that most of you feel, well, I'm having a baby, Kelly, that's a big risk, a lot of money coming in. But the flip side to that, and this is the mindset shift, is, but what if you make more money? What if you make more money? Then it comes down to belief in yourself. Do you truly believe in yourself? Do you believe that you have the support? If you don't have the support, then get a mentor. I'd be happy to mentor you. So ask yourself that, what is holding me back? And some of you don't even need to think about it. You just need to make the jump. And then you figure it out. You actually figure it out. The more people think about it, the more trouble they end up getting in because it Takes them a lot of time to recover. The other thing is here I hear is, Kelly, I don't want to leave my job because I like it there. Okay, well, if that's the case, it's going to be very hard for you to leave your job because if you like it, it's not painful enough for you to leave. You've got to have something that's so painful that wants you to leave. So, for instance, for me, it was the notes. They were pressuring me to do so much of the notes and. And I could not treat my patient. I was getting pissed because my. There was an aide that was taking my patients for 40 minutes and just like murdering them with all these higher level exercises when I needed them to be doing a lot of like yoga, stretching exercises. Because she didn't know. And I didn't even have time to train her while I'm in the room just doing straight up internal exams for eight hours straight. Do you think I made progress on patience? No. And I knew I had such highest potential than what I was doing. And that really bothered me. It so bothered me. So that right there, that's the pain. You got to pick at that pain if you don't like it. Yeah. I didn't mind people I work with, but I absolutely hated the situation I was in. So I had to make a change. And you got to ask yourself that, what are the pain points? Just got off the phone with someone. She said she has to drive like 45 minutes to go to work. And she has, you know, three kids. Her pain point is she doesn't want to have to keep driving. That takes time away from her kids. So instead, if she can have everything in her town that's close by, that's going to make her lifestyle and make more time with her kids so much better. And let me also state this too. There's no perfect time. There literally is no perfect time. There are so many things that happen in life if you wait. There's never going to be a perfect time. Whether or not you are pregnant, not pregnant. Your parents could get sick. Most of our parents now are the baby boomers that, you know are really aging. So what happens if they get sick? Who's taking care of them? And then if you have a 9 to 5 job, how are you doing that? What happens if they're out of state? Seriously, what happens? Are you gonna be able to leave and go take care of them and they're another state? You can't unless you have your own business and make money and survive Right. You could, but I don't know, you better have a sugar daddy or something because otherwise you're not here, you're out of luck. This is the stuff that actually happens. And I can feel that, you know, most of you guys are so conflicted on, should I leave this job? It's a stable job, should I not? But the time is now. I'm telling you, the time is now. There's no perfect time ever, ever, ever. And if you make the jump, you will not regret it. It's those people. It's just the initial action to take the step to say, I'm going to do this and I'm not looking back. And there's no plan B, there's only plan A. And it's only going to work if I do plan A. If you start planning out plan B, you 100% fail. I mean, I just see it all the time. But if you only have option one, which is you must make this work, you will win the game because there's only one option and that's how you survive. So for those people that are like really conflicted with time of this, or my kids aren't old enough or I am so old, so why would I want to start this? This is another thing that I hear a lot. I'm so old, I can't start it now. Now is the time. You can build wealth for your family. You can build your retirement plan. Even if you're 60 years old. Now is the time. It doesn't take long to build wealth. Within two years, you could have a seven figure company and, and that could be 100% your retirement plan. So you don't have to rely on your 401k or anything else. It's going to be massive, you know, have tons of taxes and everything. It fluctuates. You can actually rely on yourself to give yourself an asset that's going to grow over time. So going back to time, there is no perfect time. If you're listening to this podcast, I would take this as a message today that now's the time I've got to do it. What are the steps that's actually going to get me to actually every single time and every single day of what I say? Time. Money. Time with the kids, family trips, paying off student loan debt. If you guys truly, truly want that, you want it, then you have to make the jump. If you don't want it, then, then please do not make the jump. And there's no other time like today to do that.
