Why Do You Coach Others To Build Their Practices When You Sold Yours?
27 Dec 2025 · 17 min
Kelly Alhooie explains why she sold her clinical practice yet continues coaching others to build practices. She recounts starting from $800 and substantial student debt, growing a practice (and a separate online business, Pelby Biz) to seven figures, then selling the practice to reprioritize health, family, and purpose. Her coaching emphasizes building practices as transferable assets that create options (continue, pivot, sell) and aligning business design with personal values and life seasons rather than chasing societal definitions of success.

I sold my practice and I continue still to coach you guys. Here's the answer. I get this question once a week at least. Why did you sell a practice and why do you still continue to actually coach? Well, I'm going to go over today, some of you guys, this may surprise you on where we're at and why continue to be a coach and what my reasoning is behind it. And I think it will make some of you guys think, maybe even reevaluate and build something that you are actually proud of and something that actually is sustainable for you in your situation. So I always say that is a fair question to ask me because why would I be coaching you guys to build a practice or online business if I actually sold mine? Now to be fair, I did not let go of Pelby Biz. I only let go of one company and, and I built two companies at the same exact time that were big, bigger companies in healthcare space. And they, it was a beast. And you'll see in a minute of why I actually decided to do what I did. And I'm going to read you a little note that I decided to write basically to myself to really kind of understand it myself. And I said this to myself, I'm going to read this to you guys. When I started my practice six years ago, I needed one thing to get out of the situation that I was in. And I really just wanted to help clients. Like I was so passionate about getting people the freaking result. Because the reason why I got into pelvic floor to begin with is I knew I could solve a problem that, that most people weren't willing to solve. And that is why I was just so hellbent on helping these people. And the company I was at, they basically didn't care about the patients, they only cared about the notes. Cause that's how they got reimbursed. Now looking back, that's how I understand that. But I was just so hell bent on getting the actual results for the patient because I was a patient and I had medical trauma previously from past doctors that had shaped my way of how the healthcare system works. And I was over it. And I was over the way I was treated and I was over the way these patients were getting treated. And so that was part of the initial jump to get out of the situation that I was in. And then in addition to that, I was in a situation in Virginia where I didn't want to be in Virginia at all since the second, the moment that I got there and I had to figure out a way myself to get out of that situation. And I'll tell you more of the story. Here we go. So I was 120,130k in student loan debt. My health was. It was horrible. It took me like an hour to get out of bed just to even like move. I'm not kidding. I basically was dying inside. Like, I felt so sick. It just. All my energy was gone. And if you guys know me, like, I have massive amounts of energy always. And it really just took a toll being there from the environment that I was in. I just really could not stand it. So I knew I needed enough to pay my bills to basically get ahead and eventually get out of the situation before it truly took me out and killed me. And I remember the moment that I decided to make the jump. I had $800 in my bank account. Didn't know how the heck I was going to pay bills. But I said I would rather live in a tent than this situation killing me. Like for real. That was my thought process. And I was willing to live in a tent to actually get my health back. Like that was a deal I secretly made with myself. And I said, I have to make this job. And so then I just went full in and I just quit my job and the rest is history. And I want to say this too. My practice actually gave me exactly what I wanted. I didn't really realize it until now.

Let me. Let's get back to the episode. I went from zero to seven figures. I paid off all my debt because of my practice. It gave me freedom. It gave me two different houses to live in across freaking United States. It became the most valuable asset that we had. Multiple people that wanted to buy it. My practice gave me everything I needed and I am so thankful for that. But here's what people don't understand. Priorities actually change. What I needed at 33 is not what I needed at 39. At first, I needed money to survive and escape the environment that I was actually in. It wasn't my practice, the environment that I'm talking about. It was the situation that I was in in Virginia. But at the time, but. But as time went on, something shifted for me. I realized my personal passion wasn't just about treating patients anymore. It was about helping healthcare providers start and grow their dreams. And watching someone go from stuck where I was to no money to be able to build something that actually gives them profit and something that's sustainable just freaking lit a fire underneath my butt. It really did. So I had to, I had a choice. Keep running the practice that I no longer am passionate about or go all in on what actually made me feel alive. And I also grew very successful online business called Pelby Biz. At the same time I was growing orthopelvic. Like people don't realize this and don't literally know, especially even another female. I just don't even know another person that has grown two seven figure practices at the same time online and in person. They're both beasts from the ground up. With I didn't have partners, I didn't have, I didn't have backing, I didn't have financial, but I didn't none of that. I have no loans, I didn't take out any business loans. Like all literally from 800 in my bank account, like that's it. And pure will and pure passion. And in years and years working with no income from one of the companies, I mean years just purely out of passion, just because I wanted to, because it did light me on fire and it continues to light me on fire. And so basically I had to choose not the companies, I had to choose my life. And I made a decision to say, you know what, I'm choosing me. And it doesn't matter about the companies. That's not success. I'm choosing me. I'm prioritizing myself me. And that's what shifted for me. At 39 years old, me not just making money, wasn't about making money. So I sold my practice. I moved from Virginia to California full time. I had almost a 4,000 square foot house. We downsized to a thousand square foot house. For those that have been in this position, it's definitely an adjustment. It's just an adjustment. And I'm willing to make the sacrifice. Again, here's the situation. I'm willing to make a sacrifice that most people aren't willing to make. Give up making lots of money, give up making having a big house, which people think that's all success, success to making no money and living in a very small house. But I can tell you I'm the happiest I've ever been because it's not about the money. It's about living out your freaking passion and living out what you're meant to truly do and bring to this world. And it's about choosing you over anything else of something that Actually works for you. So for the first time in seven years, my face cleared up. I started sleeping again. I started to spend time with my dog and my husband. I felt like me again. I've actually just become a better version and upgraded version of myself, which I'm like, super proud of. And because I'm going to continue to change and evolve, which is, like, super exciting. So here's what I want you to understand. I don't coach you to build a practice that you're stuck in forever. That's not how I coach. I don't coach you to build a practice, or I do coach you to build a practice that actually gives you options. Maybe your practice funds your dreams for 20 years. Maybe it funds your dreams for five years, and then you have to pivot. Maybe you build it as an asset and then you sell it like I did. But you can't have any of those options if you stay stuck in a broken system that you don't own that is going to keep you handcuffed to your. To a freaking job. I'm so proud of what I've created. An asset that allows dreams to actually come true. I'm proud I built something very valuable enough that people actually want it. I'm proud I got myself out of a situation that wasn't at all good for my health, mentally, physically, all the different things. Like, I'm so freaking proud of that that no one helped me. I was the one to do it. I was the one to get out of that situation. And when you talk about confidence building, whatever you freaking put your mind to, you can do it. It may take you longer than you think. I thought I was going to be out of there in three years. I really did. Took me seven to get out of there. Seven. Okay? So, you know, it may not be the timeline that you want, but it's going to happen. When you have massive belief and you put bet and you put a bet on you and you believe in you, it's going to freaking happen, okay? And you got to continuously just say it out loud and go for one freaking goal and one thing only. And so I'm just really proud of myself. Like, I'm really, really proud of myself. And so now I get to help you guys do the same. I really do. Not because I want you to do it exactly how I do it. Because you guys deserve a business that actually adapts to your life, your priorities, your season that you get to create. And who knows what will happen in five years? You could sell it, you could franchise it. You could triple it. Who knows? But success is all about you leaning into it, taking action, and being able to create a path that only you are proud of. Not what society says that we should think success looks like the huge home, the millions and billions of dollars, the blah, blah, blah. Success is defined by you and what truly brings you happiness and what fulfills your soul. And that, for me, is what I was willing to take a chance on. And most people wouldn't do that because they'd get stuck on the money. And I was there. But I was able to overcome that and say, nope, the money's not handcuffing me. Watch out. I'm gonna do it my own way, and I'm gonna do it what fills my soul and what fills me first. And I am so proud of that. I am so thankful. So when you guys asked me the question, why are you coaching people to build a practice? Why not? It gave me everything I wanted and more. So today, that is what I wanted to talk to you about, is building something that actually gives you an asset. And it doesn't matter what you do with it because you sell it. That doesn't mean you failed at all. I've. That is not a failure whatsoever. That is a massive success because you decided to say, you know what, I'm going to downsize, or, you know what, I'm going to upsize, or whatever you want to do with it. There's no failure in that. It's all growing and adapting to what you want to, what you're comfortable with. Not even comfortable. I don't like to use that word, because you're never going to be comfortable. What you feel like is right for you. I should say it's not about anyone else. It's not about society telling you that you have to hire 20 people to feel successful. By the way, that will never, ever, ever lead to success. I'm just letting you know, I have only felt successful maybe once or twice. Really. It's not when I made millions. It's not when I paid off my student loans. The most recent time I could say that I felt successful was literally probably five months ago where when I moved here to California and I had an empty schedule and I didn't have anyone pinging me, and I was at the beach all day long every day. That's true success. It also comes with hanging out with your spouse, getting time with your family members, maybe your dog, having time to travel, to go see your family, being able to do activities that you used to do, but you now have Lost yourself because the business took over and now you get to go back and do that. For me, it's yoga, Pilates, walking on the beach again, like all that when you embrace it all where you have the time, you get to take care of yourself, going to the gym, investing back in yourself, being in an environment that just makes you feel alive and so good. That's when you're in true alignment. And that's how I coach. Not just to create something from modules that I believe everyone should have the standard of this. It's not how I coach. I coach you on what makes you feel alive on all aspects. Marriage, your health, relationships, spiritual, all the things. Because all of that matters and all of that creates success when it's all in alignment. And if something, just one thing, if one thing was out of alignment for me, it was literally the state of Virginia that I'm allergic to. Okay, like, for real, I'm not kidding. If that, if that one thing was so out of alignment, throws off everything else. And I truly want everyone to live their best life because I know we're all worth it and I know we can have it all. We really can. And it's all about focusing and making sure that you are so hell bent on getting to your freaking goal, whatever that may be, and staying so aligned with it that it will work out. It will work out. And that's what I'm here to talk to you about today, is answer the question and tell you about true success and what it truly looks like from someone that from the outside you could say has had massive success. But I really wanted to tell you what true success looks like. It's being truly in alignment with everything and all your being and all the things around you. That's true success. And when you have it, you're unstoppable. And that's what I want for every single one of you, become unstoppable. Bye guys.
