Why Moving Is The Best Opportunity To Start Your Business!
20 Nov 2025 · 13 min
Podcast episode (hosted by Kelly Alhooie) encouraging people who are relocating to start building their business before they move. The host argues that beginning community-building and client outreach online (or in-person locally) months before a move reduces overwhelm after relocation and enables both brick-and-mortar and online practices to be established and run remotely. Episode also includes a short sponsor message for Jane (scheduling software) with a promotional code.

What's up, guys? Welcome to Pelby Biz Podcast. I'm your host, Kelli Alhui. Today I want to talk about, when I'm talking to people, a lot of people are saying right now that they're actually moving and which is cool, you know, and I find that very interesting. But they're basically saying, hey, Kelly, I don't want to do anything right now because I'm moving in the next four months. And so I'm just gonna wait, put my dreams and aspirations on hold until I get to that location. And that's actually something that I don't want you to do. Okay. And hear me out on it. Because if you wait, the next thing that happens is they typically will say, okay, now when I get there, I got to figure out all my kids, schools, I got to figure out what the grocery store is. I got to rearrange the house. I then have to, well, I have to find us a house, like all that stuff, right? So when you hit the ground running and you get to a new location and trust me, been there, done it five different times in nine years, it is. Everything is new and you gotta figure out your new routine. Well, the problem with that is you're doing that and trying to do the business and it just, it could be so, so overwhelming. Just the business side alone could be overwhelming. And then you add on the whole move part, then it can be really overwhelming. So what I tell people is, even if you're going to move six months from now, it's actually the perfect time for you to start trying to build your business. And I did this for a couple times when I was away, and I first just started out with doodle groups. So when I was in California thinking that we're going to have to move to Virginia, I started to connect with doodle groups because I have a dog. And I connected with these doodle groups of Tysons Corner, doodle groups of Ashburn. It's just where areas where we live around. Okay. And they would have meetups. And so those were the first people when I moved here that were my friends. But before I actually moved, I looked up these groups and I joined them and I started to talking to them. Hey, guys, I know this is a dog group, but we're moving to the area, you know, where should we live? Can you guys give me insights and tell, tell me, you know, where's the best place to, to live if you're this age with this kind of dog, you know, where's the go to thing? Oh, okay. Well, you should move here. Okay, great. Awesome. So I started to build relationships, and this was like, six months out. Okay. Started to build relationships now from those different groups. Then it allowed me to be able to talk about other things with these people and really kind of get to know them. So if you are currently not physically in the place that you want to be at, but you want to, you have an idea to build a practice, whether or not that's online or in person. So start now. There is no time to waste. And why wait? You do not have to be in the physical location to build something in that. In that location. Just so you know. Okay, so that's a big false belief I think a lot of people have, is that they have to be there physically to build the community. You do not. You can build it from online, which is really, really cool. Okay. So the next thing is I should wait a couple months, I typically hear people say, until I figure out the path that I want to take, whether or not it's brick and mortar or whether or not it's online or whether or not it's guides, whatever it may be. Right. Why wait? That's my question. Why actually wait? Why not talk to someone? I'd be happy to talk to you and try to get you to see, a, what your strengths are, and B, what does the best path look like for you that fits into what you want your life to look like? There's no perfect formula, just FYI. It's all about what you want, what you want your life to look like, and how do you want to set it up so that you're not resentful of your work and that you actually integrate your work into your life and everyone is happy. That is huge. Okay. That's really, really big. The other thing I typically hear of why they don't want to start a brick and mortar practice is they don't have. I can't have flexibility if I have a brick and mortar practice. I hear that a lot. Like, I can't have flexibility if I have brick and mortar. Meaning, let's say my spouse is in the military and we have to move every two years. They think that they can't have a brick and mortar because two years from now, they're going to move. That's actually not the case. You could still have a brick and mortar location somewhere and then move cross country or move halfway across the country and you can still have it run. You just got to make sure in two years that that thing is up and running and ready to go so that you can move, your hands are kind of untied, and you can go about your business, do your own thing while your clinic is still running. Now, you may have to still make flights back to that location, but that doesn't mean you have to live in that state or resign in that state. Okay. And that you're married to it forever. That's just not true. Okay. I also hear a lot is I can't build an online. I can't build online if I have a brick and mortar. That's actually not true at all. Okay. You can build an online practice when you have brick and mortar. But what I always say is trying to grow the in person first, because that is going to be the lowest hanging fruit because you're able to build a community. Once you do that, then you can start doing things that you're doing in person and add them to online so that people understand that you can. They can actually get their problem solved as well. And you could appeal to maybe someone that's. Let's say I was in Texas. I could appeal to someone in the lower part of Texas or even across the US because they don't have to physically be in my location. So you can build online and you can build brick and mortar at the same time. I would just start with brick and mortar first. And not even brick and mortar, just in person. Meaning you could be mobile, you could be seeing patients out of your home. You can be, I don't know, on a freaking island. You could be at a trailhead. That's how I started. Like, you can be anywhere, but you just want to see people in person first because that's how you're going to build the best relationships, and that's ultimately what's going to build your business. So hopefully that makes sense. And then the other thing I hear a lot is I should wait until I get a location and then build it. Meaning they're going to wait until they actually physically get to the location. So let's say it was moving from California to Jacksonville. Well, do not wait till you get to Jacksonville because you're going to be so freaking overwhelmed that you're going to be like, oh, my God, I really cannot build this business because now I have to figure out where the grocery store is. I got to figure out what road I'm on. I got to figure out how to pay my electrical. You got to figure out all that stuff that comes with moving, and then you got to try to build a business on top of it. It's just hard. It's just A lot more resistance comparatively. If you were to build the business before you got there and then you just connected with the people in person when you got there, it's a lot easier. It's so much easier. So if you guys are thinking, hey, I'm going to move, I don't want to start things yet, I highly recommend you getting started before you move to that location. I promise you it will be so much more impactful anywhere between six months from when you're going to move to go ahead and start building your business now, whether or not that's online or in person. And even if you're going to move again in two years, that's okay. Why wait? I ask that question all the time. Why are we waiting? Why are we torturing ourselves just because we think we have a stability job? Well, that job right now, by the way, most insurance based clinics right now are not doing so hot. So some of them are letting people go or really harping on productivity, which is going to drive everyone out anyways, not so stable. So again, if you're thinking, you know, I might be moving, I don't want to build anything, please stop waiting. Just please, I beg you. I literally beg you. I talk to people every single day that just wait. And I'm just, I just felt feel for them. I feel so bad for them. I do, I feel so bad because I was them. And now that I'm on the other side, it's a lot easier for me to be like, why? But I get where you're, where you guys are at. It's just to me, I'm just like, come on, I know what can be had that they don't tell us about. And it's like people are keeping this unkept secret that you can do what you want, you treat the patients how you want, take as much time off, all the different things. If you just believe that you can do it and you had someone that helped guide you to be able to do the thing without it being so overwhelming and scary. Because your brain right now is telling you, don't do it, don't freaking do it. This is gonna be hard. And then you're like, oh, yeah, my brain's right, I shouldn't do it. Yeah, oh yeah, I shouldn't start now because you know, I'm not there. And it's just an excuse that you're giving yourself. Just an excuse. You're telling your brain to be like, yeah, keep me safe, keep me in my comfort zone. But the reality is you're just delaying the inevitable of starting the practice. And why do that? You're just putting yourself delaying ultimately what you want out of life. So why do that? So anyways, I just want to come on, this will be a short episode, but just want to come on and really kind of harp on because I've been hearing a lot lately, I don't want to start anything until I move. It's going to take you if you move and try to build a business. Now. It has been done. I have had students, one actually being in Jacksonville that has done this. But it is a beast, you know, it is a beast doing that. So why give yourself so much resistance? Why not just start now and then when you get there everything's a little bit more. You're already kind of familiar with the community, you're already in with them. You already kind of know like, hey, these are the go to people. You can do so much talking and connecting online and ultimately if you were to have a brick and mortar practice or something in person, you, you're going to be using online to connect with people anyways, whether or not that's through email or whether or not that's through Facebook or Instagram or these different groups. And so use that to your advantage. Like I call it 9 o' clock at night marketing when the kids are in bed and you're able to take a moment and that's when you can just on your computer and get people to respond back to you. So that's what I would say. Do that. Please do not wait. Why wait? Ask yourself that. Why freaking wait? Why not get after it now? And that's what today's episode is is please do not wait. Even if you're going to move. So don't let that be a deterrent and go get after it. Alright guys, until next time, bye bye. So much for listening to the podcast. This podcast is sponsored by Jane.
