#172 Your flying will most likely suck the day before your check ride

A YouTube vlog by Kenny Keller (Day 172) discussing whether to fly the day before a helicopter checkride. Keller advises generally against flying the day before a checkride because performance often degrades, but makes an exception for a student (Mark) due to scheduling and prior training; the video also previews upcoming videos and promotes Keller’s books and online courses.

Yo legitimately just threw a card in the camera. Mark's gonna walk through the door any minute. Day 172, coffee with Kenny. And I just thought it'd be fun if I just was doing a video as he walked in the door. Checkride guy, add on guy. It's going tomorrow. Well, it should go tomorrow, provided weather or maintenance doesn't stop us. And I'm going to go against what I preached today. I preach and have preached for years. I do not like to fly the day before the checkride. I don't like to do anything the day before the checkride because people, the closer they get to checkride day in that last week or last few days, the more they suck. I'm just telling you across the board. What I've seen is, you know, there's a point where you just got to cut it off. Either you're ready to be a private pilot or you're not. And trying to jam stuff in last minute is normally not a good idea. Today I agreed to it because he hasn't flown for a couple weeks because we put in the delays in and he lives a ways away. And okay, no big deal. You know, we've flown 12, 13 times. This is the add on he's been working on for years. So, okay, we'll go fly today. But I said one flight, you know, one flight. That's it. I'm not even sure we're going to run through everything we know. There's one maneuver he's still struggling with a little bit. So I think we'll probably work on that. We've already kind of ran through a whole checkride a couple of times. Going against the grain, right? I know I worked for a guy once. It was, you know, a great start. And one of the things that he said, everything is subject to change, right? And you kind of, you got to kind of be willing to do that because there is tons of reasons why sometimes we go against what we say, right? I mean, we're putting out these thoughts and ideas and tips and tricks, and sometimes it just doesn't work out. So what works as a best practice most of the time? Sometimes you just can't do it that way for whatever reason. So it's not like, you know, we're just throwing bad information out there. We're just putting things out there that we've seen, things that we know that work, things that don't always work quite so well. While I'm waiting on him to come in the next couple days, I'm going to do A video on flight schools that won't let you rent after getting the helicopter rating. Cover that in the next day or two because that's a great question. Just got an email from a frustrated individual and I gave him a quick email back and said, you know, hey, it happens. But we'll talk more about that in length in an upcoming video just in the next couple days after we get the checkride done. And then another one. We had a future pilot asking questions about civilian or National Guard. Now we've done that video just recently about military versus civilian, like going into the, you know, army or Air Force or whatever. But this is a National Guard question, so it puts a little bit of a different spin on it. And I am going to look to your. Those who have flown the National Guard to maybe put some input in there. So he's walking in the door right now. I don't know if he'll sneak over here. Oh, he's talking on the phone. So that just interrupted my thought process. Yeah, way to go, Mark. That was Heather from upstairs. She hears what's happening. Are you gonna peek in front of the camera and wave real quick or. No, this is the guys going tomorrow. Oh, no, there's no pressure. No pressure at all. So, yeah, the other day a gentleman posted on. I think it was Facebook. I made a post about something and this gentleman runs a flight school. And he said, yeah, we watch your videos and my instructors and I sit around after your videos and argue the points, which is good, right? And I said, that's cool. If I'm causing people to argue, that's a good thing, right? You don't have to agree with me every single thing. There are different strategies, different maneuvers, different methods. If people are talking and they're arguing out there, then I did my job because at least I got the thought process going. So anyway, we're gonna wrap it up because we're gonna go do that one flight. So again, that's why we're gonna go ahead and do one today. Just because it's been a couple weeks. Otherwise, I would say, nope. Most generally, the day before is not the time to fly. So this was day 172, I think I just rushed in here. I didn't even look. I'm pretty sure it is. Make sure you like and subscribe so you can join in on these topics. They're gonna come up the next couple days that I just mentioned. Down below, you can get either top 10 checkride tips or helicopter checkride, both Amazon number one best sellers. You can get Those for just shipping and handling. We have a whole pile of books. Heather up there in the office will ship them to you. There's also a link down below for our 24 hour test flight for our private commercial CFI and instrument courses. You can check out any one of those four 24 hours, no charge. If it's something you want to keep, you can go month to month, keep as long as you like, cancel any time. And if you decide in that 24 hours that the train is not right for you, you simply remove your credit card settings, you'll be billed nothing. Or if you signed up with PayPal, end it in PayPal and you'll be billed nothing. But you got to do that in the first 24 hours. Month to month is the way to go. Keep it as long as you like, cancel any time. Very, very common. Now people are coming in, even doing the private for a little bit and then taking a break. And then when, then we see them come back, right? They run into a struggle, they run into money issues or whatever, and they come back. And then they also the same thing with private commercial cfi, they come back and work on just a specific rating, keep it as long as they, they need it and cancel when they're done. It's that simple. So like subscribe. When you subscribe, click that bell. That way you get notification of the daily video and we'll see you in day 173, if I got the numbers right. All right, peace out.
