#177 "stirring the pot" and "pumping the collective" yes YOU do this

Kenny Keller identifies two habits that trip up student pilots: stirring the pot (jerky cyclic movements) and pumping the collective (repeated up-down inputs during landings). Both are common mistakes he sees in training, and he walks through why they happen and how to fix them.

Hey, day 177, coffee with Kenny. Still having a blast. 177, that's pretty cool. Day. I like that. Day 177, a video every day for 177 days straight. And today I want to talk about the phenomenon stirring the pot. And this came up in a question from one of our ground school members. And he's emailed me a couple times and said, working with two CFIs and they're telling me my hand's going too much this way and too much up and down. And, you know, I immediately think stirring the pot. And I asked him to explain it further. And what it boils down to is stirring the pot. I learned the term clear back when I started. And I remember when my cfi, Brad, said, now you're stirring the pot, man. And I remember him talking about it and I didn't understand and I didn't believe I was doing it. And for this member, Tom in Panama, he said, well, see, if I say I'm moving it too much and I don't think I am, well, that's the phenomenon, right? That's the part of the stirring the pot. You as the student preparing for a rating or you're just learning or whatever you're doing, you don't realize you're doing it. And a lot of, you know, Mark, that just went through a checkride with me, we just did it in the instrument. And something Mark was doing. You know, he's had over 100 hours in helicopters because he owned one years ago and had like 50 hours of solo time. He was doing an add on, right? So 12 years working on a rating, about 10 years of not flying. He wanted to finish up and, you know, just get it done. Because he'd spent time and effort in the past. And Mark was doing that up to the end. And Mark was doing it in the 180 auto. And I remember that term first coming up when I was practicing autos all those years ago. So it could be in an auto and it could be anything in any other maneuver, but Mark was doing it. We're getting ready for his checkride and he's flying all the maneuvers. And everybody always has that one maneuver that they're struggling with, right? Everybody does. Almost everybody. Or maybe you got a couple, which is okay, right? We all have struggles and we all struggle learning different things. Everybody learns differently. And specifically in the instrument, in the 180 auto, he could enter it nice, get started. And right at the even down the very last end, he was stirring the pot. And as a cfi, it's, I don't know, I guess I want to say almost comical at this point, just because I've watched it happen so many times. And even Mark, I'd say, well, what are you doing stirring a pot? What are you talking about? I go, your cyclic's all over the place. And he didn't realize he was doing it. So it's very common. And, you know, I'm going to show you, it's something like this. He's in the auto and here he is going a pretty nice entry, starts his turn. We're doing the 180 turn speed and everything looks good. And he starts going like this and there's no need for it. Why do people do it? I don't know. It's like you're searching for something. And even in Mark's autos, I mean, the auto itself wasn't so bad and the turn wasn't too bad. I guess I don't know why it happens and I guess I don't feel like I really need to dig into it. But. But you all do it, right? It's, you know, it's called stirring the pot. And some of you may have other terms for it, but it's very common, very common in the autos where somebody's just, you know, doing this and they do it sometimes when the aircraft is fairly stable. And I don't know if it's just, you know, not enough time, not being comfortable or maybe been a while since you've flown. And it's just as a CFI and you CFIs, chime in if you know what I'm talking about, because most of you probably do. We've all seen it. And again, I'm going to mention again, just like Tom. Well, I don't think I am. And I simply said in my return email, well, it sounds like stirring the pot. And you probably are doing that. You have two CFIs telling you that you're doing it. Good possibility you're doing it. Okay. It is what it is. I'm going to call it phenomenon, because almost every single person does it. And again, it could be hovering, it could be doing your set down. It could be during the autos. And he also mentioned pumping the collective. He goes, well, I finally stopped pumping the collective. And that's another one that people just in general you see over and over and over. And Mark, that we just finished up last week, he was doing the same thing. And I've done several videos in this over the years about the air cushion Going to set down and pick ups and set downs. And I've talked about it over and over and I'll talk and I'll mention it again real quick. It's very common, it's very common that you're got a pretty nice set down going and you're almost there, you're almost there and people just start doing this, pumping the collective up, down, up, down, up, down. As a cfi, you feel it and you're telling your student and you're going, hey, stop pumping the collective. And they'll go, I'm not. And he'll say, yes you are. And they go, but I'm not moving it. And I'm going, I know you don't think you're moving it, but you are. Because I feel it and, and sometimes I can even see it, but I feel it more than I see it because I'm looking outside and I just have my hand on that collective and I just feel it, you know, I feel it go like that. And it's when you're cleared down there at the ground that it happens. So don't feel bad. I'm not making fun of anybody. I'm giggling because I just kind of want you to relax about it and understand that stirring the pot in whatever maneuver, it's very common. And again, I'd still love to know psychologically why it happens. Sometimes a person even does it when everything's looking pretty good. It's not necessarily that everything's really bad, but it's like you're searching, you know, and that cycle just goes. And it is almost a circle and it might be a little more one direction than the other, but you'll feel the student going almost around in a circle. Kind of jerky, stirring a pot. Alright, I'm going to wrap it up some Monday morning. Summertime's here. Heather will be in shortly. Start shipping books book sales from over the weekend. We do have lots of copies left of our Amazon best selling books. I'll highlight Colicopter Checkride today. That's my favorite, my first book ever. And you know, it was so much fun doing this. I did it in 2014. I never dreamed my entire life that I was going to ever do a book. And I'll tell you what, I highly encourage any of you that are interested in writing a book. I want to tell you it's a lot easier than what you might think. There's some tips and tricks to get one done now. I had a lot of time in it. I had about three months in it and had a lot of people helping me proofread and stuff. So, I mean, there is effort involved. You don't just flip it out overnight. But what a neat deal. You know what you need for your own legacy to have a book. And it's called Helicopter Checkride. But, you know, the first paragraph is. Or first paragraph, first chapter is a little about me and my struggles, which I talk about in my videos all the time because we all have them and some member testimonials right in the beginning, wonderful things that people say about helicopter on ground school. And then there's just a whole bunch of helicopter training stuff in here, which it all relates to the check right in the end. The helicopter threes is one that people really like. In this book where I did back in 2012, I think I want to redo this. I did a series of videos called the Helicopter Threes, and I did a video every day for 30 days. And, you know, there's so many things that helicopter training that when you're learning and you're studying that, you realize there's three of this and there's three of that and there's three of this. And it's kind of neat how it comes up over and over. It's really, really cool. And I love the number three. And that's why I like that helicopter Threes. We transcribe those and put them in this book. And those are kind of fun. And a lot of people really point out that they like those. And being this is July 1, Heather said, you know what, we better run a sale for July 4th. I'm like, yeah, and I forgot to get it ready. But I kind of wanted to start on July 1st, and this is July 1st. Since I like the number three, and number three keeps popping up all the time, I'm going to start it now. July 1st, the cell will be 33. 33% off. Because I love the number three. So 33% off. And I'll make up a code right now. Let's see. How about 33 off? I'll put it down below in the description box. And we're going to make that for the yearly memberships, which are going away very soon. We get so many people that they don't understand it's a membership. And then they come back and say, oh, man, I didn't understand. Even though in all our marketing we try to explain, look, it's a membership. The monthly is a membership, the yearly is a membership. If you don't cancel them, they will renew. So either you need to cancel yourself or have us do it for you. And a year later you're going to get billed again. So, you know, oh my gosh, I didn't understand. Well, it is annual subscription, it renews. You can simply sign up for the, say the yearly and go in and immediately remove your credit card and you won't be billed anything. You won't be billed again for the next year. Now, if you take it out before the 24 hour test flight, okay, then you'll lose your access to the site. So let me back up 24 hour test flight on monthly and yearly memberships. Okay? We're not discounting the monthly because the monthly is so dang cheap. We're not doing it $49 a month for the private pilot with the amount of training you get, it's cheap. So we're not discounting that one. But we will discount the yearly. That again is going to go away and I think the next year that needs to happen. Just because monthly seems to work better for everybody. There's less hassles, less complaints. Then we have the big professional pilot membership. So that's a pretty, that's an intensive membership. It's private commercial, cfi, instrument, but it's unlimited. It does not expire. So it's not an annual, it's not a monthly. You only get billed one time. There's a lot of training between private commercial, CFI and instrument. And this is for the person who wants to be a professional pilot and they want to keep the training. So it's there one year, two years, three years down the road, four years down the road. Took me four years to get my CFI. Many of you take four years or longer. So we're going to do 33 and a 30, 33% off that one as well. Again, I believe the code's 33 off. So I'll make that as I'm uploading this video. 33 off sounds pretty good. And so that saves you a big chunk on that professional pilot membership. That's some pretty hefty savings at 33% off. And if you know, actually I'll build the links and I'll put them down below. So if you want to go check out these links, they'll take you direct to the checkout page and you'll see how much the discount is for either the yearly or the professional. So boom, I'll put the links down below, click them, you go to the page and you'll show you the normal price and it will show you the discounted price in between all of our options, there's. I'm not going to try to tell you all of them because it depends on whether you want yearly or professional and which ones you want. So I'll put all those links down below so you can go check out the sale prices. This is so awesome. I love it. And 33. And I'm gonna tell another little secret. Well, there's a specialty kind of car that I've had two of in my lifetime. And there's. I bought them, sold them, bought them, sold them. And I had one that I had to sell because the helicopter business robbed me of it. I'll say that I sold it to keep the helicopter that ended up making me go bankrupt. So my daughter and I found one last night and I might have to go check that out after this video. But hey, I lost the first one, right? I'm old enough. I think I deserve to get that classic car back. Anyway, I won't spoil by talking anymore about it because if it'll happen, if it happens, I'll show you on another video. So, like. And subscribe to the channel. Subscribe. When you click subscribe, you'll see a bell icon. You have to click that icon in order to be notified of the daily video. As of right now, they come out different times of the day just because, you know, I have a busy life like any of you. And I work hard and work every day, especially doing a daily video, and then also run the business and then also try to have family time and spend good quality time with my daughter. So if you subscribe, click the bell. That will notify the daily video. Please give us a thumbs up on this video for our little tip on stirring the pot. It's crazy, but it's fun. It's kind of cool. And again, I'm not making fun of people. I want you to understand that it's something almost every single person does when they're learning to fly. And if you understand it and if your CFI is telling you you're stirring the pot or whatever else the term that they use, and you don't think you're doing it, you probably are just like pumping the collective. When you go, your CFI says, well, you're doing this up and down when you're going upside down. Oh, no, I'm not. Yeah, you are. You just don't think you do. As CFIs, we feel it because we are riding around all day with you. This is what we do, right? You're trying to fly and learn, and it's hard Right. When you're learning to fly a helicopter, there's so many things going on and in your mind you're thinking about radios and aerodynamics and flying the aircraft and watching the gauges and doing the inputs and there's so much going on that a lot of these times, these movements you're doing and you don't think you're doing it, but we pick up on it as CFIs because we ride around all day, right? We don't even really get to fly that much as CFIs. We're riding around all the time, giving you tips and telling you what we see, because that's what we do. That's what we get paid to do. We get paid to ride around and evaluate what you're doing. So in turn, we're in tune with what you're doing. And we know what people will normally do, right? Because people are people and most everyone has the same struggles when they're learning to fly. Just, you know, kind of depends in different areas. But as CFIs, we see all that stuff and we put a ton of that into helicopter land ground school. So we've been online over seven years. This is an amazing opportunity for you to get the ground school that you need. And we do have a 30 day money back, no hassle guarantee on anything. So that stands. It's ironclad. It's been there since the beginning. And I had people go, oh man, I wouldn't do 30 days. You know what, it's been in place the whole time and it's a no hassle. It's a hassle if you try to refund it 32 days or 39 days or five months in. No, you have 30 days after the 24 hour test flight on the monthly and yearly, you have 24 hours to check out the training. It's not right for you. Pull your credit card or end it in PayPal. You get billed nothing. If you like the training, you want to keep it on monthly basis, keep it as long as you like. You can cancel anytime by removing your credit card from settings or going into PayPal. And your subscription, same thing on the yearly, you can end it at any time, go into hog settings, helicopter line, ground school, remove your credit card information, or if you sign up with PayPal, go there, remove your credit card. It's that easy. If you have trouble trying to do it, email us and we'll do it for you. So July 1st today sells on. I'm going to end it. I think I probably better. People get busy through the 4th, so let's run it through Sunday night, past the 4th, whatever that day is. So I think the 4th is Thursday. So let's say sell in Sunday night. So jump down below, check out those links, leave us your comments, subscribe. When you do, click that little bell and we'll see you in day 178. Sounds cool, right? All right, see you then.
