Short YouTube video (Day 166) where Kenny Keller answers whether the FAA Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI) remain useful after earning a CFI certificate. Kenny argues FOI concepts are memorized during training but naturally return in real-world instructing through experience and association with teaching; occasional refreshers may help. The piece is informal, anecdotal, and aimed at CFI candidates and new instructors.

Hey, day 166 is possibly the fastest coffee with Kenny ever. Got a question, and it was a good question. One of our members going for his cfi, and he said, kenny, is the foi, the Fundamentals of Instructing something that we'll really use, or is this something you just study and forget? And that's a great question, because I know when you're going through the cfi, you know, it's a lot of memorization. But here's what's cool. For those of you that like learning, want to retain and actually get out there and instruct, you will remember the fois and you will actually use those. Okay. You know, I've never. Let's see how I want to put this. It comes up in training. When you're out there working as an instructor, it's not like you got to go back and study the fois again. Unless you are training a cfi, you'll be back in the handbook making sure you hit everything. But it's amazing how much of the FOI just comes back to you when you're working with a student. You know, law of primacy and application, correlation. You know, how all these things fit together. It's really cool. And just through the association of teaching and seeing how people learn, these things will come back to you. So, yes, it's a lot of memorization when you're going through the cfi. But don't think, oh, I'm just going to study all this stuff and never use it again, because it will come back to you. And again, it's just neat how without really studying it, you're out there teaching as instructor and you're seeing how people learn, and the fois will come back to you. So, yes, the fois are useful, and you will use those as an instructor. And again, without even necessarily having to go back and study them. Doesn't hurt to go back and refresh them once in a while, but they'll just come to you. Right? You're working with a student and he hasn't flown in a couple weeks. Right. And there's so many scenarios where the fois do come back to you. So I'm gonna get going because I got a great big day today. So there you go. About two minutes. Probably the fastest one ever. I gotta get rolling, like, and subscribe to the channel. Day 166. Tomorrow's 167. Don't know what's gonna come up for 167 yet, but we'll check it out in the morning. All right.
