#214 “Helicopter Pilots keeping up with changes and updates ?”

Kenny Keller (Helicopter Lane Ground School) answers a viewer (Van) about how helicopter pilots keep up with industry changes. He recommends FAA webinars and faa.gov as his primary source, notes that regulatory changes are infrequent but well-publicized, and mentions industry networking and newsletters as secondary sources. The video includes personal anecdotes (ramp check, CHP flight), promotion for his training courses (trial, 30-day money-back), and a limited-time coupon code (KK25OFF). This is episode Day 214 of his daily "Coffee with Kenny" series.

All right. Day 214. Hey, I got it right. It's amazing how many times I screw this up in the morning. Got a question from Van, one of our ground school members. Great question. Gotta mention, oh, my God, this is so exhilarating. The air and the sound left the door open all night. Oh, my God. So Van says, hey, you know, congratulations on the half year mark on the Coffee with Kenny videos. Yep, I'm past the half year mark. Quite an accomplishment, and I admire your effort and dedication. Thank you. It's been a blast and I love doing it. In terms of a topic for a video, I wanted to ask what sources you use to keep up with the goings on and the latest news in the helicopter world, are there certain websites, newsletters, or magazines that you read regularly? What's the best way to keep abreast of the latest goings on? Great question. What I do mainly is I'm signed up for the FAA webinars, and so I'm constantly getting notified. I mean, they put out webinars all the time on all kinds of things, especially stuff that's new, things that are coming out, things that are changing, and then a lot of just plain good safety stuff. They cover crashes, they cover weather. There's all kinds of good information there. So my number One source is faa.gov and a lot of people don't go to the FAA website, but I highly recommend it. There is so much content on the FAA website, for me, that's the best place to stay abreast of what's going on, what's new, what's changing. I mean, things don't change as much as you might think that they do. I mean, there are occasionally changes in regs, but they don't really seem that often and they're usually very well publicized. So if you're on the FAA website, even if you jump on there every few months or every six months or so, I'm also lucky enough that helicopter ground schools went to the point that it has. Right. I get emails on all kinds of stuff. So if something would even happen to maybe slip by me that was coming out, I get asked about it, right? Somebody will send me an email or send me a video. And of course, you know, just being current in the industry and talking to people, but that's my number one. There is tons of newsletters and magazines out there. Honestly, I don't spend a lot of time looking at them because I'm so dang busy all the time just keeping the business going and doing the daily videos. And taking care of members and creating new content. So for me, that's the best source. And I like using FAA publications again, because it's the faa, right? That's who governs us. So, you know, some people, you know, snoot their nose when you say faa, but, you know, the FAA is actually pretty darn helpful. And over the years, I've never had a problem with the faa. Faa, FAA has always been really awesome to work with. Anytime I've had any interaction with them, I can't really say I've ever had really, a bad experience. That one guy, that time that ramp check, that guy got a little, you know, I don't know, he was a little tough. But by the time it was over, everything was good. And his attitude changed when he was done with the ramp check, right? Just like an examiner, you know, I like talking about the check, right? At Tim Tucker, he told us that day, he's like, you know, he's real friendly and cool, and there's two of us doing a checkride for our cfi. And he said, the minute that I start this test, we're not friends anymore. And I can laugh about it now. I mean, it was a tough checkride, but, you know, examiners do that. FAA does that. They put their game face on when they have to. But if you understand, you know, us pilots, it's our job to stay informed. It's our job to be current. It's our job to know the latest of what's going on. And it's. And it's our job to know our stuff. So that's my answer. Van, that's a great question. Thank you very much. I am Kenny Keller, creator, Helicopter Lane ground School legitimate day 214 copy with Kenny. Some of these days, I do the video later and don't have a coffee. And I'm Like I know it's absolutely incredible. I have to thank those guys again. Going up in the CHP helicopter was, you know, that's a dream, man. You know, I'll never fly for them, I'm too old. I know there are pilots that are guilty that say I don't do anything. Right. I've heard that. A few years ago I was actually honored to speak at Heli Expo and do some classes during a flight instructor refresher course. And that was one of the topics I had to cover was how do pilots stay current with knowledge. And also at that time, whatever was, you know, had come out in the, in the previous two years, things that had come out. And I really found the FAA website to be the best source to keep abreast of things going on. So there's your answer, Van. So thank you very much.
