#28 ACS Airman Certification Standards PTS Practical Test Standards YOU need to KNOW!

Kenny Keller explains why helicopter students should train to the FAA's Airman Certification Standards (ACS), which are replacing the Practical Test Standards (PTS). Use the ACS as your single authoritative checklist for checkride prep, not conflicting guidance from different flight schools.

Hey, it's Kenny with helicopter line ground school. Your focus subject today, Coffee with Kenny, unofficially named by our members and followers on YouTube. I'm going to tell you about a question we got from a member, but this is going to relate to the practical test standards pts which will be coming the airman certification standards acs. Okay. Co currently pts, we know it's going to ACS very soon. So working on your helicopter checkride, getting ready. You should be using the pts, becoming the acs. This member's question was really long and he said he's flying at two different flight schools and he's being told two different things or many different things between the two flight schools. And in this email he's telling me, Kenny, this school's telling me a whole bunch of different than what this school is telling me. And he's like I'm thinking about just giving up and coming over to see you guys. Which is great. He's welcome to come here anytime. He's a member. This question is a good question because we hear these things going on out there in the helicopter industry shouldn't be going on. It's not that hard to figure out if you're going to flight school and there and you're unsure. There shouldn't be. You shouldn't be unsure. Okay, Practical test standards. The PTS is from the FAA and this is for regulations in the United States. Okay. Your instructor should be working through the pts. You as a student should be working through the pts. There is no guesswork on what you need to know for the private pilot or any of the other ratings because it's all in the pts. It will soon become the ACS Airman certification standards. The fixed wing world has already switched. Helicopter world is still on the pts. Okay, so again practical test standards becoming airman certification standards. We don't know when. FAA keeps telling us it's coming. Sorry about the noise in the coffee machine there. These are kind of fun. It is coffee with Kenny, unofficially named still got steam coming off. This is a down and dirty video because I my trick is to have these ready to go by the time I'm done with my third cup. And I'm on my third cup now so of course I get low battery. So our training which you can take for a 24 hour test drive, we built our training seven years ago. Seven years online we have private commercial instrument certified flight instructor. You can take the monthly and yearly options on those for a 24 hour test flight. Be build nothing. We built our training on the practical test standards. When we get the new acs, we'll update the training to include acs and talk about the changes. So many years ago, we used to fly our examiner over in a fixed wing, pick him up and bring him over, and I would prepare two students at a time to make it well worth his while. For some reason, I could prepare two people better than I can prepare one at a time. Makes no sense, but I did. And we were taking him back home. After two checkrides and the fixed wing pilot, who's a fixed wing cfi, asked my examiner a question. He goes, well, hey, how hard is it to decide whether you're going to pass somebody or not? And this examiner is a nice guy, right? He's not. He's not. He's not in. He's not an ass, but he's. When the airplane CFI said, how do you decide whether somebody fails or passes or fails? He said, it's pretty easy. Ever heard of the pts? And that was all he said, Right? So if you're at a flight school and instructors are conflicting on what you need to know, there shouldn't be any conflict. Everybody should be working off the pts, the practical test standards soon to become airman certification standards. And he asked me what he should do and I'm going to answer him after this video because I told him I'd make him the video. And I'm going to say, dude, just if you want to stay with one of those flight schools, I just ask him, say, hey, guys, I'm confused. I'm getting told different things from different instructors here. There shouldn't be any confusion. Instructors, examiners, students, everybody should be working through that PTS book. And in my 20 years of experience, you'll make a student buy a PTS, they won't open the damn thing up. They'll be near checkride and I'll go pull out your pts. And I can see it's nice and crisp on the edges, never been used. And I'm like, you need to dig into that thing. Okay. You need to be working through it yourself as a student. Your instructor should be opening it up and going through it with you. That's a simple case. So again, I appreciate his question. I understand being a student and out there in helicopter industry confused. He shouldn't be. Shame on these flight schools. Whichever one is not using the pts or why they're confusing a student is beyond me. It should not be happening. So you as a student preparing for any check ride pts, soon to become acs. That's it.
